Amother of four was arrested today on charges of killing one of

her 22-month-old twins by rupturing the babys heart and

injuring the other twin by causing a skull fracture. Linda

Wilborn, 31, Seal Beach, is charged with one felony count of assault

on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in

death and three felony counts of child abuse. If convicted, she faces a

maximum sentence of 25 years to life in state prison. Wilborn was

arrested today by the Seal Beach Police Department (SBPD) and is

being held on $1 million bail. She is expected to be arraigned

Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, SantaAna. The time is to be determined.

Wilborn has four young children, including 22-month-old twins

Millicent and John Doe. Between Oct. 17, 2009, and Dec. 17, 2009,

the defendant is accused of physically abusing the twins.

On Dec. 17, 2009, Wilborn is accused

of being home with her four children while

her husband was at work. The defendant is accused of inflicting

tremendous blunt force on Millicent. At approximately 4:00 p.m., Wilborn

is accused of calling 9-1-1 to report that the victim was unresponsive.

Millicent was transported to the hospital, but later died due to a

ruptured heart despite the life-saving efforts of medical staff. Further

examination of the victim revealed that she had fresh and old

fractures to her ribs. An examination of her twin, John Doe, revealed

that he had a fractured skull. The defendant is accused of causing the

great bodily injuries that resulted in the death of Millicent, as well as

the injuries to John Doe. The other two children did not have any

    physical signs of trauma.

Wilborns three surviving children were placed in protective custody.SBPD investigated this case and arrested the defendant today while she

was at the Orange County Social Services Agency visiting her children.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Scott Simmons of the Homicide

    Unit is prosecuting this case.

    Bartender accused of soliciting 13-year-

    old: Police in Huntington Beach,

California have captured another alleged child

predator on craigslist using the exact sametactic if not the exact same ad.

This time it was 27-year-old Gabriel

Preto who responded to an ad where he

thought he was going to pay for sex with a 13-

year-old girl. And just like the last time the girl

was in fact the Huntington Beach PD.

    Hopefully the

    Huntington Bach

    police will keep

    taking dangerous

    craigslist predators

    like this off the

    streets. Now if

    only the courts

    would keep them

    behind bars.

    Recently my granddaughter, a four

year old, visited me in the

    hospital with her grandmother.

When they got to the hospital, she ran

    ahead of her Grandma (son-in-law's

mother) and bursts into her my hospital

    room...

    "Grandpa, Grandpa," she said

    excitedly, "As

soon as Grandma Nancy comes into the room,

make a noise like a frog!"

    "Why?" I said.

"Make a noise like a frog! because

Grandma said that as soon as you croak, we're

    all going to Disneyland "

Kinda brings a tear to your eye doesn't it.?

Many of you have been asking

    me what was the big

    Hollywood deal going on at

The Hyatt Regency & Spa in

Huntington Beach, Feb. 10th. I was on

the scene and discovered a giant crane

on PCH lifting things way up high and

over to the pool area, where you could

see from the street huge Hollywood

Lights turning the Hyatt into another

Film Set, this time for an Orbitz

commercial. The same site was used

recently to film a segment of "90210,"

the new version of "Beverly Hills

    90210." The picture-perfect, clear day

after the storm, was ideal for filming.

    The Hyatt is becoming increasingly

    popular among Hollywood Scouts and

production trucks have been seen more

and more parked on PCH and in the

    nearby beach lots for series,

    commercials and even model shoots.

    Congratulations to The Hyatt for

earning some additional revenue and to

    Hollywood for again discovering the

Huntington Beach is a perfect location

to shoot your movies, commericals and

model showcases. It's close to Tinsel

Town and offers some of the most

    beautiful settings in California.

    Octane Alley and Dreaming for

the Cure held a fundraiser car

    show on Sunday, January 31st,

    2010 behind Marina Village Shopping

Center in Huntington Beach. There were

several classic cars on display. The

hostess was Vivien Lesiak from Your

LA, a show that used to be on NBC4

    Televison. This event which raised

money for Dreaming for a Cure, was

started by Reinaldo Binns to help with

    The Fight Against Parkinsons and

    Multiple Sclerosis. He has another

    This WeeksGrandpa Story

If you love something, set it free. If it comes

back, it will always be yours.

Insanity is my only means of relaxation.

A friend of mine confused her Valium

    with her birth control pills.

My mind not only wanders, it sometime

    leaves completely.

The best way to forget all your troubles is to

    wear tight shoes.

The nice part about living in a small town is

that when you don't know what you're doing,

    someone else does.

The older you get, the tougher it is to lose

weight because by then your body and your

    fat are really good friends.

Sometimes I think I understand everything,

    and then I regain consciousness.

Amazing! You hang something in your

closet for a while and it shrinks two sizes!

    Skinny people irritate me! Especially

when they say things like, "You know,

sometimes I just forget to eat." Now I'veforgotten my address, my mother's maiden

name, and my keys. But I've never forgotten

to eat. You have to be a special kind of stupid

    to forget to eat.

The FREE Pass: HB Locals It could happen!

For over 10 years I have proposed the

concept that the residents of HB have put u p

with a lot. We spend millions to bring million of

people and dollars to HB. The streets get torn up,

the side walks are under repair, the sewer system has

been worked on, the trees have been uprooted.

Should the people who live here who both pay for

and put up with all of that get something in return?

First, every homeowner should get One Free Pass per

year for street sweeping violation. No need to build a

    60,000 name data base.

You live here and get a Parking ticket - go to

City Hall, log in and you get registered for that first

time infraction per year... either you can put your

driver's license in or vehicle registration...

from that point on for the next 12

    months...you cannot get any more

    violations waived. Sounds very

    simple to me.

    I call this Dave's Law...

you can call it just Fair

    and Equitable

    treatment for

    homeowners.

If you are the kind of person who judges senior

Citizens by their longevity or gray hair and fail

to even recognize their contributions, their

    creativity, generousity, productivity and overall

quality... if you fail to consider the attributes of

their long life....then you are making unfair

decisions based on little or no facts and predicated

on your own prejudices.... if you continue to

    c o n d u c t

    yourself in this

    manner you

    will only draw

    attention to

your lack of character and credibility" - Guy

Carrozzo, resident of Fountatn Valley and a

    senior citizen.

    By Dr. Paul Kengor

Editors note: This article first appeared at

    National Review, February 6, 2010.

This February 6 marks the 99th anniversary of Ronald

Reagans birth. In a telling development, Republicans

around the country have begun holding Reagan Day

dinners, as theyve traditionally done every February for

Abraham Lincoln. This isanother of those unique,

    spontaneous displays of

    affection for Reagan.

    Having written so

much on the man, I get

    questions about Reagan

    this time of year, running

    the gamut from his

    domestic achievements to

    his historic foreign-policy

    triumph: peacefully ending

    the Cold War. Sometimes I

    get asked for unreported

    anecdotes reflecting on his

    personality and character. I

    have a bunch of those,

    eagerly shared with me by

    people who met Reagan

    Reagan talked to anyone

    or dug up from thousands

    of letters Reagan wrote to

    everyday Americans over a

    long lifetime. (See my

    NRO article on Reagan

    and Ruth Smith of Idaho.)

    Reagan was plainly

    likable. Of all the subjects

    Ive studied, few were as

    universally liked. Sure,

    Reagan, as president, was

    demonized by the left; still,

    most liberals muster nice

    words about Reaganpersonally.

    Central to that

    likability was Reagans

    humility. The word I

    didnt dominate his

    lexicon, unless he was

    poking fun at himself.

    Ronald Reagan was not

full of pride; thoroughly un-possessed of self-love.

And so, with that background, Id like to take the

opportunity of Reagans time of yearnot to mention the

month of PresidentsDayto share an anecdote, told to me

by Bill Clark, Reagans close friend and most significant

    adviser:

Clark had served President Reagan as deputy secretary

of state, national security adviser, and secretary of interior. As

a senior official, he was required to have a driver to get him

to appointments. Clarks driver was a man named Joe

Bullock, a Georgia native who moved to Washington during

the Great Depression. Joe was a victim of the cruel Jim Crow

laws that plagued the South. He went to Washington for a

    better life.

Joe first found employment as a mule driver. He

eventually traded in the animal for various senior people in

the federal government, some of whom, including a high-

level figure in the previous (Carter) administration, didnt

treat him well; in fact, that previous figure didnt speak a

word to Joe in three years.

Thus, Joe was taken aback when Bill Clark not only

talked to him, asking questions about his life and family, but

also whether he could sit up front. Clark rode shotgun with

Joe, creating not only a few stares but security concerns, as

Clark, given his influence in n ational security, was a target of

    Americas enemies.

One morning, Clarks father visited Washington. He hit

it off with Joe. Clarks father was a rancher, a man of the

West. He gave Joe a gift: a Western-style belt, with a kind of

John Wayne belt buckle, as Clark described it. Joe loved it,

    proudly displaying it by

    always leaving his blue

    suit-jacket unbuttoned.

    That belt and buckle

soon assumed a life of its

    own. There was an

    upcoming state visit by

    Englands Prince Philip. It

    was customary that the

    White House provide a gift.

    Clark and Reagan and a

    few others brainstormed

    following a morning

    briefing. Clark suggested a

    Western belt. He had one

    in mind, made by Si

    Jenkins, a Santa Barbara

friend of both Clark and the

    president. (Reagan, too,

    was a California rancher.)

    Well, what does it

    look like? asked Reagan.

Clark noted he had a model

in the car: Joe, who was

    wearing the belt. Send him

    up, ordered the president.

    They called for Joe, who

    entered via the door of

    Reagans personal

    secretary.

    Joe had worked for

    the federal government for

    50 years, but had never

been within 50 yards of a

    president or the Oval

    Office. He walked in.

    He saw Clark, Vice

    President Bush, the

    senior aides, and the

    president of the United

    States. He was in awe,

    overcome. Suddenly,

this tough 64 man began weeping: He had come so far since

Jim Crow and the Great Depression. He was choked up.

No one in the room was prepared for that reaction. They

were dead silent, uncomfortable, clueless to respond; except

for Ronald Reagan. The president rose, walked over to the

driver, extended his hand, breathed in, and said matter-of-

factly, Mr. Bullock, I understand you have a belt to show

    me?

It was an everyman touch. And it put old Joe

immediately at ease. Business-like, Joe showed the belt, and

then he and Reagan swapped stories, chatting away like old

    friends.

The rest of us just faded away, said Bill Clark, as the

two got along famously. President and driver, remembering

    the old days.

Bullock left with a story to tell his fellow drivers, and

his grandchildren. He died a few years later.

No, this anecdote is nothing dramatic. Its not like

challenging Gorbachev to tear down the wall. Its simply

another of many small stories I hear constantly about Ronald

Reagan. This was a good president and a good man. The

White House needs more of them. Thats a thought worth

bearing in mind this February, a month that marks not only

    Reagans birthday but PresidentsDay.

Petite Sirah (aka. Durif, Petite Syrah).

Developed in the 1870s in Frances

Rhne region where it is known as Durif

or Petite Syrah, this grape variety is more

commonly known by its slightly anglicized

synonym, Petite Sirah -- particularly in

    California.

The result of a cross between the noble

Syrah and a relatively minor Rhne variety,

Peloursin, Durif was developed to resist

Powdery Mildew, to which Syrah is

    susceptible. Although mildew-resistant, the

tightly-bunched variety was vulnerable to gray

rot in the humid southern Rhne. Fortunately,

the grape has adapted well to the drier climates

of California, and to those of northeastern

Victoria, in Australia. In fact, the grape has

succeeded better abroad than in its south of

France birthplace, where it is now almost

    extinct.

Its small berries, and consequently high

skin-to-juice ratio, allow Petite Sirah to

produce wines with high tannin levels,

surprisingly high acidity, and thus the ability to

age. Characteristically, these wines have dense

blackberry fruit character, mixed with black

pepper notes. The grapes similarity to parent

Syrah became confusing for early planters in

California. Starting in the 1880s, some of the

original Durif vines were confused for a clone

of Syrah and subsequently named Petite Sirah.

Until the push for varietally-labeled wines

came to the fore in the 1960s and 1970s, little

thought was given to the actual name of this

variety in California. It was often

added to provide color and body to

    Californias bulk wine production,

or used to add richness to North

    Coast Zinfandel and

    Barbera. Recent

    research by Doctor

    Carole Meredith,

    at U. C. Davis, has

    confirmed many of

    Californias Petite

    Sirah vines to be

    Durif. Still, other

    vineyards thought to

be planted to PetiteSirah have been

    identified as Syrah, Pinot

    Noir, and even Peloursin,

with other plots a mixture of

    many varieties. "While

    winemakers may be content to

    live with the genetic

    heterogeneity that is Petite Sirah

    today, varietal labeling

    regulations may eventually force

    the issue, C. Meredith says.

    One day, the winemakers may

    be asked to agree

upon a single variety that can bear the name

Petite Sirah. Which one will they choose?

What is Petite Sirah? Recent amendments by

the TTB (BATF) allow wines to be labeled

either Durif or any of the many different

spellings of Petite Sirah. By any name, this

variety has the ability to create rich, age

worthy reds and is reestablishing itself as one

    California's great grapes.

    ENERGYKeep Your Pet from Harm!

    Top Ten Pet Poisons...

Kirsten Taylor says ometimes it seems

like our trouble-making pets will eat

    anything. Their hoovering ability

comes in handy when you spill chicken

soup on the floor (tongues being just as

good as mops). But unfortunately, it's alltoo easy for our pets to get into substances

    that can harm them.

    The ASPCA Poison Control Center

recently released a list of the top 10 poisons

that affected cats and dogs in 2009. So take

note, and be sure keep these toxic substances

far away from your pets in 2010!

    Human Medicines

Human drugs were the top cause of pet

poisoning in 2009, the ASPCAreported. Last

year, the Poison Control Center managed

more than 45,000 calls from people whose

pets had swallowed pills such as pain

    relievers, cold meds and antidepressants.

    Insecticides

One of the most common insecticide

problems was misuse of flea and tick

products. Make sure to talk to your vet about

how to properly use these products.

    Human Food

Most people know chocolate is dangerous to

dogs. But did you know that grapes, raisins,

    avocados and products containing xylitol

(like sugar-free gum and candy) can also be

    harmful to your pets?

    Plants

    Dozens of common houseplants, including

    azaleas, rhododendrons, sago palm and

kalanchoe are dangerous for pets. Lilies are

particularly toxic for cats, and can cause deadly

    kidney failure.

    Vet Medicines

Almost 8,000 cases of pet poisonings in 2009

involved pets that were given medicines

incorrectly. Make sure you follow instructions

and talk to your vet about how to safely apply

    over-the-counter and prescription medicines

    for your cat or dog.

Rodent KillerPoisons that are attractive to mice and rats can

also smell tempting to dogs and cats. Be sure to

keep your pets away from potentially deadly

    rodent poisons.

    Household Cleaners

    Bleaches, detergents and disinfectants can

    cause serious gastrointestinal and respiratory

problems. Keep cabinets locked to prevent

your pets from swallowing or sniffing the

    harmful substances.

    Heavy Metals

You know lead poisoning is bad for babies, but

it's just as dangerous for your furry friends.

Keep your pets away from paint chips,

linoleum, and the dust produced when you

sand the walls in older homes.

    Garden Products

Fertilizers and other garden chemicals can

cause severe stomach upset in dogs and cats.

So let your dog stop to sniff the roses, but not

    the fertilizer, please.

    Household Chemicals

Our homes often contain a lot of chemical

substances, from antifreeze to paint thinner to

drain cleaner. Such substances can cause

    stomach upset, respiratory problems and

chemical burns in dogs and cats.

The information contained in this column does not

necessarily reflect the opinion of The Local News.

The largest driving forces in the US economy

are not happening on our soil: Theyre

happening overseas. Last weeksaw three major economic events: the

Federal Reserve announcing their exitstrategy for the US, Greece is

teetering on the verge of default, andthe Chinese central bank tightened its

    monetary policy. Ordinarily, all three

of these events would have movedmarkets. What we saw last week was

a dramatic reaction to the Chinese andGreek developments while the Feds

    announcement was barely even a

topic of conversation.Chinas announcement was the

biggest market mover of the week.China is the third largest economy in

the world behind USAand Japan, andtheyre rapidly closing in on the #2

spot. Because China produces much of

the worlds goods, any changes in theireconomic policy will move markets.

Here in the US, China is the #1 holderof American bonds. So anything that

happens in China will impact the US

more than any other country.Greece is a significantly smaller

country than China in terms of GDP.However, as a member of the

European Union, Greeces economy can cause aripple effect in other countries using the Euro as

currency. We saw this last week when the dollar hit

a nine month high against the Euro.Compared to these two events, the Feds

announcement had no noticeable impact on themarkets. In all fairness, the Fed has been very

forthcoming about its intentions. Because of this

transparency, the markets already have the Feds

changes priced in before they actually come to

pass. The announcements from Greece and(especially) China were much more of a surprise

and therefore caused greater market reaction.

This isnt the first time our economy hasbeen affected by overseas announcements. Just a

few months ago concerns over Dubais creditcreated one of the biggest market movers of

2009. This created a strong global demand for the

    safety of American bonds. Whats

good for bonds is good for rates

and November of 2009 featuredthe lowest mortgage rates in

    American history. Thanksto Greeces precarious

situation, mortgage ratestook a nice dip down

    earlier in the week.

However, all those gains(and more) were immediately erased by the

tightening of monetary policy in China. Whenthe Fed made their announcement, rates didnt

    change at all.

Shopping for a mortgage loan is very muchplaying the market. When you get a quote, that

quote is only good for that day. In the event of amarket-moving announcement, that quote may

only be good for a few minutes. Many people tryto time the market to get the best rate. This can

be a very effective strategy provided you and

your loan advisor are working closely as a team.Unexpected events like those of last week simply

cannot be predicted. This is further support totaking a proactive stance as opposed to a reactive

one. Reactive individuals will always miss the

best the market has to offer.

An age old method of converting

    enhancer is

    n o w

    considered

    cutting edge technology. The end

result-- what is old is new

    technology is called biochar.

So how does biochar enhance the

soil? Biochar is a fine grained, high-

carbon charcoal, full of crevices. The

crevices give it lots of surface area so

it can easily bond with soluble plant

    nutrients including nitrogen,

    phosphorous, magnesium and calcium.

    This material also allows nutrients

to stay in place even when fields are

irrigated or flooded. Biochar acts like asponge, soaking up water and

    promoting the growth of beneficial

    microbes. This is especially important

in poor quality soil. It is interesting to

note that good soil containing plenty of

    mineral and plant additives also

benefits from the addition of biochar.

Biochar has multiple environmental benefits including the

potential to help mitigate climate problems by sequestering (seizing)

carbon and storing it in the ground for an extraordinarily long time.

    That means more carbon in the soil and less carbon in the atmosphere;

a good thing for all of us. Biochar reduces the need f or fertilizers which

are often fossil-fuel based. The byproducts of biochar include heat and

electricity. By utilizing renewable bio-based resources, biochar

suppliers are providing clean energy from local sources of waste.

This inexpensive technology offers us even

more, a way to get rid of waste materials in a

proactive, environmentally friendly way. By using

    materials that would

    normally go into the

    landfill or a compost

    pile, biochar turns

    infertile, taxed or sandy

    soil into fertile terra

    preta the Amazonian

    word for dark earth.

    Environmentalists

    talk about the cost of

    doing business as a

    negative but in this

    case, the cost of doing

    business is a revenue

stream. Let's encourage our cities and state to produce biochar from our community waste

    streams and be

    ahead of the curve

    in being at cause

    for the reduction

    of greenhouse gas

    emissions.

    Terra Preta, such a pretty

    name, perhaps someday visitors

    It seems like

    it could be a

    storyline out

    Steven Spielberg's 2002 movie, Minority Report: a

Minnesota man was convicted of a DUI offense in a

car that wasn't moving. What's even more surprising:

the car wouldn't start at all.

As it turns out, getting a bit tipsy and stumbling

out of the house to sleep it off in the car may make

you a felon. It happened to Daryl Fleck.

That he'd consumed about twelve beers is not in

dispute. His felony conviction for drunk driving,

even though his car was not running and legally

parked, has earned him 48 months in custody and five

    years of probation.

It started one night in 2007, when when a

neighbor at Fleck's apartment complex alerted police,

they found him sleeping in his car, with the driver's side door still open.

Appealed all the way to the Minnesota Supreme Court, Fleck's conviction was

ultimately upheld, though not without testing the elasticity of interpretation. Fleck

obviously shares a fondness for beer with many Americans, though his prior DUI

offenses did not win friends on the jury.

In this instance, the keys to the car were in the center console, far from the ignition.

The engine was cold, and Fleck hadn't even been listening to the radio. Officers

determined Fleck's blood-alcohol level was .18, which may be more to blame for the

    conflicting reasons he

    gave to police when

asked why he was at the

car than any attempt at deceit.

    Minnesota's legal blood-alcohol limit is .08, and

Fleck's results were more than double that. Were he

cruising sloppily past a sobriety checkpoint, the case

would have been an unchallenged open-and-shut matter.

Instead, prior cases that convicted citizens of DUI

on the grounds of an expanded interpretation of "physical

    control" were used as precedents.

For example, in a prior case, the meaning of

"physical control" was stretched to include the possibility

that a vehicle available to an intoxicated person could

easily be pressed into service, irrespective of intent.

Again, that would be a more straightforward precedent

but for the fact that an officer's attempt to start Fleck's

impounded car revealed that it wouldn't run.

Despite the apparent incongruity with reason, Fleck's conviction was upheld by the

    Minnesota Supreme Court.

Has a menace been removed from the roads -- and society, for that matter?

No doubt, someone with prior DUI convictions isn't doing the public a service.

Fleck shouldn't have been near the car in his condition.

We only shudder to think o f how far the notion of "physical control" extends before

someone else decides the fate of the rest of our automotive experiences.

    THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

    The federal Bridge Preventative

    Maintenance Program grant, awarded to

the city in December, is expected to

cover $2.7 million of the estimated $3 million

    needed to revamp the bridges.

A federal grant recently given to the city

    will help upgrade Brookhurst

    Street Bridge over Talbert

    Channel, Magnolia Street Bridge

    over Huntington Beach Channel,

and the Warner Avenue Bridge over Bolsa Chica

Channel. Pictured is a bridge on Pacific Coast

Highway that is not part of the grant.

Bridges that are part of the grant are:

Brookhurst Street Bridge over Talbert Channel,

Magnolia Street Bridge over Huntington Beach

Channel, and the Warner Avenue Bridge over

    Bolsa Chica Channel.

In a 2007 study, city officials found that all

of Huntington Beach's bridges were structurally

    sound but needed

preventive maintenance, according to a city

report. The city then submitted an application to

the federal maintenance program asking for

    funding for the bridges.

Part of the construction will include

    embankment erosion fixes, minor concrete

repairs due to environmental damage, and

    asphalt replacements.

The city will be working with the Orange

    County Transportation Authority and Caltrans

to obtain the approvals necessary to proceed

with the design of these bridge maintenance

projects. The improvements are expected to take

one to two years to complete because of grant

    requirements and environmental processes

    Please join HICAP on

    Monday, February 22,

    from 9:30am-11:30am as

they discuss how to be a good

self advocate and get the most

    out of the healthcare system.

    Topics that will be discussed

    include: Learning how the

    health care system works,

    preparing for medical

    appointments, knowing how to

    ask questions, getting support

    and how to reduce the

    intimidation factor. This free

seminar for adults 55 and older

will be held at The Center at

    Founders Village Senior and

    Community Center, 17967

    Bushard Street, Fountain Valley.

    : What are

    the environmental

implications of all the food we

throw away here in the United States?

    - Mike Schiller, Cambridge, MA

Food waste is a huge issue in

America, especially in light of the growing

divide between the profligate rich and the

hungry poor. According to the U.S.

    Department of Agricultures Food Loss

Project, we throw away more than 25

    percentsome 25.9 million tonsof all

the food we produce for domestic sale and

    consumption. A2004 University of Arizona

study pegs the figure at closer to 50 percent,

finding that Americans squander some $43

billion annually on wasted food. Lead

researcher Timothy Jones reported that on

average, U.S. households waste 14 percentof their food purchases. He estimates that a

family of four tosses out $590 per year in

meat, fruits, vegetables and grain products

    alone.

Once this food gets to the landfill, it

then generates methane, a greenhouse gas 23 times as

potent as carbon dioxide in trapping heat within our

atmosphere. According to the U.S. Environmental

Protection Agency, landfills account for 34 percent of

all methane emissions in the U.S.meaning that the

sandwich you made and then didnt eat yesterday is

    increasing your personaland our collectivecarbon

    footprint.

Furthermore, researchers at the National Institute

of Diabetes and Digestive and Kid?ney Dis?eases

(NIDDK) concluded in a 2009 study that each year a

quarter of U.S. water consumption and over 300 million

barrels of oil (four percent of U.S. oil consumption) go

into producing and distributing food that ultimately

ends up in landfills. They add that pe?r-capita food

waste has in?creased by half since 1974, and suggest

that the U.S. obesity epidemic may be the result of a

push effect of increased food availability and

marketing to Americans unable to match their food

intake with the increased supply of cheap food.

In spite of all this, environmentalists are optimistic

that Americans can reduce their food waste. For one,

restaurants and markets are increasingly finding

outletsincluding soup kitchens feeding the poor and

farms looking for cheap animal feedfor food they

would otherwise toss. Some communities now pick-up

and centrally compost food waste from commercial and

residential buildings and put the resulting nutrient-rich

soil to use in municipal projects or for sale to the public.

And a few enterprising cities now have waste-to-energy

technologies that extract methane from landfills for use

    as fuel.

An extreme reaction to the food waste issue is

freeganism, a movement of people who live on the

food cast off by others. These dumpster

divers share, in the words of movement

    founder Warren Oakes, an anti-consumeristic

ethic about eating and not only avoid creating

waste but live off that caused by others.

Going freegan might be a bit much for

most of us, but we can all take action to

minimize food waste. The University of
