month of the 5th
year of the 9th
decade of the
20th century, a
young boy was
born into a family
and a proud
member of its 24th generation he was
then to be known as Adrian Lee. One
thing is known for sure; this boy was
destined for greatness, he would one
day become be seated in the position
of intercultural leader of Powell’s
House of the 12th year of the 21st centu-
ry.
Travis Blinkhorn (Deck Captain)
Travis Blinkhorn they call me. I am from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. That’s in the Maritimes. I am the deck captain of Powell’s house and I know we are going to win the House Cup this year. I play hockey for Appleby and I am a very smart student. If you have any questions, I am always here to answer them, if not, Luke Miles is around as
well.

D’Aguilar
(House
Prefect)
Through-
out my tenure at Appleby College, I
have had the privilege of living in the
House of the Lion, Powell’s House. I
have become the young man that I am
partly due to this marvelous estab-
lishment. This year, as Powell’s House
Prefect, I am excited for a great year.
Unfortunately, we have never won the
house cup, but this year, with the
gentlemen that we have in the house ,
I think that winning is definitely possi-
bility and I am striving for this out-
come. Additionally, with the enthusias-
tic house faculty, winning the House
Cup is even closer to our grasps.
Steve
Pashuk
(Deck
Captain)
I started
Appleby in 9th grade. I didn’t know
anybody when I came here. Soon after
I met plenty of people and quickly fell
in to the exciting routine of school.
Looking back, it was well worth the
time I put in to my hobbies (drawing,
rugby, guitar etc.). A lot of people
could say that to excel at Appleby you
have to be academically strong. That
wasn’t the case for me. Although
academics matter they don’t shape
your success, being myself seemed to
be good enough and has made my
years here all the better.
Luke Miles
(Deck
Captain)
From a small sunny island in the Caribbean came a young lad with the intentions of starting new in the cold … very cold nation of Cana-da. Luke came to Appleby in Grade 11 and his love for Powell’s has blos-somed every day since his arrival. A die hard Manchester United fan, Luke is determined to take the house cup back to its rightful place, Powell’s House. As a deck captain Luke plans on making sure everyone on his deck is safe and sound, and that they are all motivated to win the most magnificent prize of them all, The House Cup. Luke will do his best to ensure that the house cup will be in his arms by the
end of the academic year.

Monday, Septem-
ber 17th marked the first spirit day of
the 2012-2013 school year. This is
always a day where the energy and
excitement can be felt across campus.
The day began with a full house break-
fast in the Schlesinger Dining Hall. fol-
lowed by a loud and warm welcome to
the day students and faculty at the front
of the school at 7:30am. Each of the
boys represented Powell’s House with
great enthusiasm and spirit The house
pride did not end there. All of the day
students then joined the boarders in the
Chapel Quad to get their new Powell’s
House t-shirt, learn the Powell’s House
chants from House
Prefect, Alex
D’Aguilar and cele-
brate being a mem-
ber of the best
House on campus.
Throughout the day,
the boys did a

house pride wheth-
er it was through
general acts of

Appleby and Powell’s House history over the past week and we all greatly appreciate their dedication to the house. Hopefully they can pass along some of this knowledge to the rest of
the House at a House Meeting this year.
The boarders then took to the Gym to partici-pate in a variety of games run by the Prefects. Such games included Caterpillar, Dance Off, Tug of War, Frozen Tee-shirt and many more. It was evident that everyone had a great time and there is a great buzz around the boarding community. Stay tuned for some Homecoming
pictures.
Over the past few years it has become a tradition to have all of the boarders in House on the Friday night of Homecoming for a night of fun and bonding activities. The night kicked off with an all boarder dinner, which was then followed by House Trivia hosted by Appleby’s archivist, Mrs. Tracy Krause and the Social Sci-ence department. Andrew Ko (communications rep) and David Sampson (Day student rep) did a great job representing the house of the lion as they got 11 out of 13 questions correct. They were only surpassed by the Colley House representatives who went 12 for 13. Andrew and David spent a great deal of time learning

Taylor Brophy (Health and Wellness
Leader)
I’m Taylor Brophy and I am this years Powell’s House Health and Well-ness leader. I am a enthusiastic strawberry blonde haired beauty who is looking to raise the health and wellness standard this year in Powell’s House. I will be inputting monthly health tips in The Lion Letter and encouraging the citizens of Powell’s
House to live a healthy active life. I look forward to the coming year being on the 2012/2013 Powell’s House
council.
David Sampson (Day Student Rep)
David Sampson was born in a fire-storm of truth. At the age of seven he had one goal in mind and that was to join the Powell’s house council. Through years of re-search and dedication, David saw the light. He was stricken with joy whilst in
grade 11 on the first of school. He saw the energy and bright young faces of the day students and at that moment he knew his calling in life. He is the day student rep. He is not the one we deserve but he is the one needed. A persistent house council member, a somber house council member, a day
student rep.

Ramy Moussa (Community Service
and Sustainability Rep)
This year, the men of Powell’s House
have one common goal: to bring back
the House Cup and bask in its glo-
ry. The house council of Powell’s
House is a vital part of this goal, as
they will provide the leadership need-
ed to achieve it as the year progress-
es. After an intensive selection pro-
cess, 10 brave men were selected to
be a part of the House Council.
Spent more of his days hunting, cutting wood and he grew up playing hockey on the frozen ponds around his town. One day he felt the need to explore the world, so he packed up his dog sled and ventured out. He ended up at Appleby College where he’s now representing Pow-ell’s house as a deck captain and also
a member of the Varsity Hockey team.

truth and dissemina-tion of information and after 17 years of faithfully continuing this task, he came to realize something very important. He was needed. For Powell’s house. He is
the only one standing between the darkness and confusion of not knowing what is happening. He is the communi-
cations representative.
Shawn Jeffrey (Deck Captain)
From the secluded island off the east coast of Canada came a young boy. He
Drink more water- Most of us actual-ly don’t drink enough water every day. Water is essential for our body to function – Do you know over 60% of our body is made up of water? Water is needed to carry out our body func-tions, remove waste and carry nutri-ents and oxygen around our body. Since we lose water every day through urine, bowel movements,
perspiration and breathing,
we need to replenish our water intake.
This also is congruent with the health council’s theme of hydration this
month.

Also, Ramy will be assisting the men of Powell’s House in the necessary task that is completing the school year with a minimum of 25 service hours to their name. The men of Powell’s House are serious contenders for the House Cup this year, however it is up to all of them, in unison, to lead the
charge.
One of these chosen ones is Ramy Moussa.. As the Service and Sustaina-bility Representative of the 2012-2013 school year, Ramy will help to propel Powell’s House forward in the race for the House Cup. This will be done by conveying important information about opportu-nities to acquire points in events
related to service and sustainability.
