ANTIQUE SLIDESHOW ON: Slideshow on American Imagery of Native Americans

On Thursday, March 29 at 1:00 pm Although most colonial cultures conveniently avoid

images of native peoples, in North America images of

Native Americans are so common we see them almost

every day. Visual images of Native Americans have

permeated American culture since the eighteenth cen-

tury. European settlers had complex, conflicting opin-

ions of the native peoples, and as the United States

evolved many of the contrasting views have continued

to be depicted in products and advertising we see

each day. Stimulated by a current exhibition at the

National Museum of the American Indian, we will

probe some of this imagery. The speaker will be an-

tiques writer Bob Jackman. While the talk will be orga-

nized around a sequence of 70 slides, the atmosphere

will be informal with questions and answers through-

out the presentation. Expect to learn a bit, share some

laughs, and have a good time. Admission is free but

please sign up as refreshments will be served.

MARILEE’S CLASSIC MOVIE CORNER On Wednesday, March 21 at 12:30 pm

“The Quiet Man“ (1952) 2 hr 9 min After accidentally

killing an opponent in the ring, boxer Sean Thornton

(John Wayne) leaves America and returns to his native

Ireland, hoping to buy his family's homestead and live

in peace. In doing so, he runs afoul of Will Danaher

(Victor McLaglen), who long coveted the property.

Spitefully, Will objects when his fiery sister, Mary Kate

(Maureen O'Hara), begins a romance with Sean, and

refuses to hand over her dowry. Mary Kate refuses to

consummate the marriage until Sean retrieves the

money. EASTER/SPRING CARD CLASS w/ CAROL

TRIAD “Preventing Tick-Borne Diseases” On Wednesday, March 14 at 1:00 pm

Don’t wait for ticks to bite you; take an active role in

protecting yourself! Since the discovery of Lyme dis-

ease around 1980, the incidence rates of tick-borne

diseases have been on a steep incline throughout the

world. The risks of contracting any of several diseases

in Plymouth County rank among the highest in the

country. Lyme disease alone is already over 13 times

higher at home than the national average. The good

news is that proper education on prevention goes a

long way. Studies have proven that people who are

taught the proper tools and techniques drastically re-

duce their risks of contracting any tick-borne disease.

With the right knowledge and tools, all tick-borne dis-

eases are preventable.

Come join Blake Dinius, Plymouth County entomology

educator. Together, we will review basic tick biology,

scientifically proven protection methods, and bust any

commonly held myths. Sign up at the front desk.

UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS

SENIOR INTEREST STUDY

In partnership with the Town of Marsh-field Council on Aging (COA), research-ers from the Gerontology Institute at

the University of Massachusetts Boston are conducting a study of the needs and interests of Marshfield’s pop-ulation aged 50 and older. Older adults already repre-sent a large share of Marshfield’s population, and pro-jections indicate that numbers will increase in the fu-ture. In fact, by 2030, at least 8,000 residents will be age 60 or older, representing over one-third of Marsh-field's total population. The COA intends for this study to inform their planning for programs and services meant to address the evolving needs and interests of Marshfield’s older residents.

For this project to be successful, we need your help! We want to learn from you about how the programs and services already available through the Marshfield Council on Aging Senior Center can be made even bet-ter. During the week of March 5th, 2018, question-naires will be available at the Marshfield Council on Aging Senior Center. We want to hear from you about the activities you most enjoy, and also the programs and services that are not available but that would be a benefit to you and your families. Please stop by the Senior Center and fill out a questionnaire.

The information obtained through this survey will be combined with other data sources collected for this study and compiled into a report by the UMass team. We expect that the report will be completed in April. Study findings will be shared with interested residents at an event planned for spring or early summer.

2017 INCOME TAX RETURN

ASSISTANCE

The Marshfield Council On Aging, in conjunction with the AARP Foundation and the Internal Revenue Ser-vice, is again hosting free, confidential income tax re-turn assistance for low to moderate income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention paid to those age 60 and older. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide volunteers are trained, certified and experienced with basic, non-complex federal and state tax returns. All returns are electronically filed unless circumstances dictate other-wise.

- Please pick up a Tax-Aide Intake/Interview sheet from the front desk at your earliest convenience. You DO NOT need to book your appointment prior to pick-ing up the intake/interview sheet. This form will in-clude a comprehensive list of documents that you should bring to your appointment. Complete the in-take/interview sheet, sign the Town of Marshfield waiver form and bring these with you to your appoint-ment. - Please be on the lookout for mail labeled IMPORTANT

TAX DOCUMENT. These mailings contain income, So-

cial Security, pension, annuity and other tax docu-

ments and generally arrive in early February. Broker-

age tax statements typically arrive in early March.

- Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.

Bring your completed Intake/Interview form, a photo

ID, Social Security card for all household members, all

tax documents and your 2016 tax return. Before your

scheduled appointment, you will meet with a Client

Facilitator who will engage you in our screening pro-

cess. The AARP Foundation has determined that cer-

tain tax returns are “Out Of Scope.” Some of these

include: rental property income, advanced K-1 forms,

business income and expenses (other than very basic

ones), and complicated or lengthy brokerage transac-

tion lists, or brokerage transactions with missing de-

tails.

- Every tax return will be reviewed for quality assur-

ance. The tax counselor will explain the finished tax

return. Copies of the tax return will be printed and all

documents will be assembled into a set and placed

into a Tax-Aide envelope for safe keeping by the tax-

payer. Be sure to bring your checkbook if you would

like your refund to be directly deposited to your bank

account. - TAX QUESTIONS ONLY: If you only have questions

and do not need to have an income tax return pre-

pared, please feel free to walk in and ask your ques-

tion. No appointment is necessary for questions.
