THE VISITORS

Canterbury City was revived in 2007after folding in 2000-01. They are the firstfootball club in the country to be formedas a Community Interest Company andwon promotion from the Kent CountyLeague Division II (East) in their firstseason. They followed this by securingpromotion to the Premier division lastseason after an unbeaten run and winningthe Les Leckie Cup.

As a community based club, they runseveral sides including Youths, Women’s,Girls’, Special Needs, and Homeless.

Although for some fifty years therewere various versions of a City club, it wasnot until 1947 that a truly representativeone came about. For many years theyplayed in the Kent League, the SouthernLeague, and the Metropolitan Leaguewhich they joined in 1958, finishing thirdand guaranteeing promotion to the South-ern League Division One.

During the 1960s City twice reachedthe first round of the FA Cup. In 1963-64

they lost 6-0 at home to Torquay Unitedbefore a club record crowd of 3,001 and in1968-69 they went to Swindon and, by allaccounts, were unlucky to lose 1-0.

During the early 1970s they struggledin the Southern Division and by the early1990s they were also in financial trouble. They returned to the Kent League and al-though initially doing well, they finally fin-ished bottom in two consecutive seasonsand folded.

Their home ground of Kingsmead Stadi-um has now been re-developed forhousing but the Canterbury City Council isworking with the club to provide a brandnew “Football Hub” in the City which it ishoped will become the football club’shome within the next two years. Thisseason they play home games at AshfordUnited FC.

The club is sponsored by local solicitorsRobinsons
