A dominative midfield display wasn’tenough as the Lingers lost out to Oak-wood.
The game started with a touching dis-play of Remembrance as captain SamCockerill laid a wreath of poppies in thecentre circle and lead the teams in aminutes silence. The sides also worepoppies on their kits as a mark of re-spect to those who gave their lives.
Lingfield dominated in the openingstretches and indeed for a lot of thegame, and it took less than 10 minutesfor Kerran Boylan to tap in the firstgoal thanks to good work from Ro-maine Atkinson. Unfortunately, just afew minutes later it was even again asa fast Oakwood counter met the on-rushing Daniel Smith, leading to theball flicking into the air wildly and land-ing in the back of the home net.
The rest of the half followed a similarpattern with the Lingers enjoying largeperiods of chances and possession, andthe visitors occasionally looking danger-ous on the counter. Despite this, just15 minutes into the second half it was
the away side that took the lead, astheir number 9 headed in at the nearpost. You could count the number ofgenuine Oakwood chances on one handand yet just moments later they had athird, as Daniel Smith’s scuffed clear-ance in the wet allowed Oakwood tocross and tap in again.
Insult was added to injury as ChristianLondoño, arguably Lingfield’s best crea-tor in the second half had to limp offinjured 20 minutes from the end. Oak-wood’s confidence swelled and they be-gan to create more and in the fourthminute of extra time the away number7 (whose presence on the pitch was du-bious considering some of the challeng-es he’d made throughout the game)found himself through. He calmly rolledin the fourth and final goal, leaving theLingers feeling very hard done by in-deed.

Saltdean United are a club that have always hadhigh ambitions both on and off the field and notso long ago were one of the leading clubs inSussex.
Originally formed in 1966, the club started life inthe local Brighton Saturday League and graduallymoved up their divisional structure over theyears. Following the acquisition of their currentground, Hill Park the club joined Division 3 of theSussex County League in 1984/85, finishing thirdin its first season. Promotion to Division 2 andsenior football came in 1988/89 when they fin-ished champions. The next seven seasons werespent there, with the “Tigers” eventually winningDivision 2 in 1995/96 with games to spare.
Promotion to Division 1 saw the clubhouse com-pletely revamped and floodlights installed – thefirst Sussex County League club to invest in theimpressive Musco system from the USA - still oneof the best lighting systems in the County Leaguetoday. With financial support behind them, the
“Tigers” quickly established themselves as a forcein the top division, finishing 4th in their inauguralseason and reaching the final of the Sussex Sen-ior Cup; losing to St. Leonards by the odd goal. In1998/99 the club finished 2nd, and 3rd in1999/2000 when they also lifted the John O’HaraCup, beating Burgess Hill Town after extra time ina thrilling match at Three Bridges. Over the nexttwo seasons however, the club’s fortuneschanged dramatically. Proposed developmentwork to Hill Park failed to materialise; fundingwas substantially reduced, and this, combinedwith significant changes both on and off the pitch, saw the Tigers fall to 16th position, with relega-tion to Division 2 following in 2001/02. This wasthe first time in the club’s history that it hadsuffered relegation. Despite finishing in 5th posi-tion in their first season back in Division 2, this
could not be sustained and the following seasonssaw the club finish consistently in the lower halfof the division. They were relegated to Division 3at the end of 2006/07 where they were to spendthe next five seasons. 2010/11 saw the 1st XI liftthe Division 3 Challenge Cup and in 2011/12 theymaintained their momentum by winning the Ver-non Wentworth Cup and gaining promotion backinto Division 2 and senior football. That seasonalso saw the 2nd XI come runners up in theirleague, gaining promotion to the SCFL ReserveSection Premier Division – quite a feat for a Divi-sion 3 reserve team!
Saltdean United continue to run youth teams forall ages and in 2005 were awarded FA CharterStandard status in recognition of the club’s organ-isation and how it is run at all levels; particularlyin relation to youth football. Work on the creationof a third pitch Hill Park for mini-soccer was com-pleted in time for the commencement of the2009/10 season.
The main priorities of the club remain as follows:a) to improve the quality of football playedthroughout the entire club, b) to build a newclubhouse and dressing room facilities togetherwith necessary ground improvements to meet theever increasing requirements of the FA, and c) toimprove both internal and external communica-tions to reinforce a “one club” approach.
