Leg Ulcer Prevention Program (LUPP)

6 sessions with captivate presentations delivered via the nurses laptop computer.

Accompanied by LUPP folder, written versions of the presentations, summary sheets, and activities.

Sessions focused on: What is a leg ulcer, leg ulcer treatment, activity, nutrition, hydration, skin care, compression therapy

LUPP Evaluation

Method: Pre and Post intervention study of client knowledge and behaviour assessed using matched client Pre and Post LUPP Questionnaires.

Sample: (n=156) Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) clients from 8 of 16 RDNS sites in Metropolitan Melbourne and Mornington Peninsula with a venous leg ulcer who were English speaking.

Conducted between 31st March 2009 – 17th March 2010

This study was accompanied by evaluation of nurse perspectives and client satisfaction with the initiative

LUPP… Changed client knowledge & behaviours Increased use of compression bandaging specifically 4 layer compression bandagingStandardised care in line with best practice principles Improved nursing practicePositively engaged nurses and clients in health promotionUse of the multimedia package in the home setting was well received by nurses and clients

The pilot version of LUPP is being refined. LUPP is now standard practice at RDNS.
