Changing Patterns of Life
Chapter 9, Section 4
Village life since independence
Not a lot has changed; Traditional economies and occupations Farming done by hand;
However, the Green Revolution has enabled more technology to reach villages More electricity, TVs,
Urbanization is occurring in India at a rapid rate 2.47% annual rate of change (2010-15 est.)
Improved health care is also raising the population, lowering the infant mortality rate
Modernization and the Caste system
Even though untouchability has been outlawed, caste still governs many aspects of people’s lives Jobs, education, marriage in many cases
Some changes have occurred People from different castes mix more freely Urbanization has helped, as people don’t
know where others are from
Education
Improving since independence From 10% literate to over 60% literate - age 15
and over can read and write More boys than girls attend, though
male: 75.2% , female: 50.8% (2006 est.) Literacy also lower among lower-caste and rural
people Jobs are also hard to come by
Increasing population means government has to try and create more jobs
8.8% (2013 est.) -comparison to the world: 98
Women and Family Life
Marriage customs are changing Arranged marriages still exist, but not as
pervasive as in the past Some couples have more say in the matter
Family structure changing Extended family less likely to live together Young couples don’t always move in to their
parents house Women have gained some rights, but still
occupy a subordinate position in many ways
