Today marks the beginning of the Senior Championship in Lancashire for
2014. Although it is much earlier in the year than normal, this should not
detract from what should be a great days football in Liverpool. This year for
the senior championship games are to be played as double-headers to raise
the profile of gaelic games in the county. Liverpool Wolfe Tones are the
great beneficiary of this and will no doubt cater brilliantly for the four clubs
today. Thanks for all the clubs forwarding teams for this program. Greatly
appreciated.

On behalf of the club I would like to wish all the teams and officials
the very best of luck and look forward to two mouth-watering ties.
I would also like to extend my thanks to the county board for selecting
Wavertree as the venue for one of the highlights in Lancashire season.
Finally it takes much time and preparation to prepare the venue for an
occasion like today thank you to all involved.
May the most deserving teams win!!

Best thing about your club: St Lawrences is a true family Club with
traditional values that epitomises all that is good about the GAA. The
club very quickly becomes a surrogate family for all exiles and home
grown players. It is glue that binds our lifelong friendships together.
Hopes for the future: That we continue to grow and develop as a club
and never forget the values of our founding members and the ethos of the
GAA. I hope we will be able to provide our men's, ladies and youth teams
with the facilities that their talents, hard work and determination deserves.

What do you think makes the GAA in Britain special: It's very un-
derrated the standard is far higher than given credit for back home and the
effort put in behind the scenes too.
Who’s the best/worst trainer in your squad: Best trainer has to be
Paraic McGuirk, hes a bigger less talented lad so its good to see he’s first
there and last to leave. Worst trainer Id have to say meself or Paddy Mur-
phy, I hear hes changed since he made county
Hopes for the club this year: To match and build on the success of the
club's great season last year and hopefully progress that extra step or two
further

Wolfe Tone Cup Final 15/3/14
St.Brendans Manchester 0-07 v 1-07 Wolfe Tones Liverpool
The Wolfe Tones of Liverpool created history when they beat St.Brendans by a
goal in a tight encounter to claim their first ever piece of silverware for the club.
Since the club’s inception in 2010, they have failed to see out a final on a winning
score-line; however this all changed on Saturday. A gutsy second-half performance
against a hellish breeze, seen the boys in green, white and gold across the line.
The Wolfe Tones won the toss and decided to play with the strong wind at their
back. Through wayward shooting, poor passing and failure to retain possession
however, they didn't capitalise on this advantage. It took 10 minutes before they
raised the green flag, when a Nigel Grennan free opened their account. St.Brendans
quickly replied however before the Wolfe Tones went ahead through a Darragh
McCullough effort. This was cancelled out yet again, as the Brendans got on the
scoresheet from a free. Down at the other end the Wolfe Tones were still making
hard work of their chances. Two super runs from Caomhan Scanlan and captain
Conor Lamph failed to produce scores and long-range efforts from McCullough,
Peter Cosgrove and Cristy Harkin harmlessly went wide. With 8 minutes to go,
Scanlon came out to the middle with Grennan going the opposite way; this had the
desired effect. Consequently, the latter managed to get onto long balls, while the
former fetched a few balls in midfield to put the Brendans under pressure as the
half came to a close.
As the half-time whistle went the score read Wolfe Tones 0-04 v 0-02 Brendans.
No doubt the Manchester men the happier bunch of with the wind to come on the
second half.
The Wolfe Tones had it all to do in the second half but a classy effort on the
restart from Grennan settled the nerves, but on came the expected onslaught
from Brendans to add a flurry of scores.
The Wolfe Tones defence managed to get their act together however and
started to keep the scoring to a minimum after the initial wave-and-wave of
maroon attack. Richie Barry’s clever kickouts helped negate the threat of a
wind-assisted Brendans and in turn mounted attacks for the Tones. Then
came a decisive moment in the game when a Tone’s goal was harshly ruled
out for a square ball, to still leave the Brendans two points ahead. Instead of
this deflating the Liverpool men, they rose to the challenge and strong run-
ning from Harkin, Scanlon and Lamph, who also hit the bar; paid dividends.
The former two also hit classy efforts from long range to show their new-
found belief on the scoreboard to leave the Tones one point up. The Wolfe
Tones resurgence then came in the form of a goal when a Grennan effort
broke to the onrushing substitute Damien Murphy who simply tapped it into
the empty net. This left the Tones four points up. A late siege at the goal of
Barry and Co only yielded one point, as the Wolfe Tones deservedly won
their first ever trophy.

Lancashire GAA Senior Football League Final
Oisin Manchester 2-11
St. Peter's Manchester 2-8
Despite a gallant St. Peter's second half fight back Oisin Manchester were
crowned the Lancashire GAA Senior Football League winners on Sunday last
after an entertaining and exciting decider played in front of a large crowd at the
Old Bedian's grounds in East Didsbury, Manchester.
Playing with a strong wind to their advantage in the first half, Oisin's built up a
commanding ten points lead (1-10 to 0-3) at the half time break with the particu-
larly impressive Gerard McCaughey notching an outstanding 1-7 during the first
thirty minutes, some wonderfully struck long range frees while his goal was also
from free out towards the centre of the field with the strong wind helping it on its
way to the back of the net.
Oisin's opened the scoring after less than thirty seconds when Paul Noone pointed
from play which was followed less than a minute later with a well struck effort
from play from Gerard McCaughey. Peter's opened their account on five minutes
when Dessie O'Malley pointed from free.
Oisin's went on to record the next seven scores of the game with points apiece
from Paul Noone and Mick Conmey while McCaughey added a further 1-4 to his
tally, with the goal and three of the points coming from well taken long range
frees.
St. Peter's notched their second score of the decider on twenty nine minutes when
Jack O'Doherty slotted over from play while moments later Dessie O'Malley fired
the ball over the bar. Oisin's added two further points from McCaughey before
the break; leaving the score reading 1-10 to 0-3 at half time in Oisin's favour.
Peter's opened the scoring on the changeover when Robert O'Donnell fired the
ball to the back of the net while the next score didn't come for a further ten
minutes when Mark Boyle pointed from play for Oisin's, which turned out to
be their last point of the contest.
With fifteen minutes left on the clock; the St. Peter's fight back commenced
with fours points on the trot coming from Dessie O'Malley, Gary Morris, Rob-
ert O'Donnell (free) and a good effort from play from substitution Cathal Col-
lins.
On fifty nine minutes St. Peter's brought it back to a one point contest and ex-
tra time looked very likely when Robert O'Donnell made no mistake when
slotting the ball to the roof of the net for a well taken goal from play.
However just as it looked as extra time was on the cards; Oisin's managed to
get in behind the St. Peter's defence when McCaughey was on the mark once
again with a rocket of a goal from play.
St. Peter's did manage one more point coming from Ross Nolan. However it
was Oisin's day as they held out for a three points victory when capturing the
2014 Lancashire GAA Senior Football League title. Team captain Rory
McLoughlin as presented the cup by Lancashire GAA Chairman Sean Hop-
kins.

Oisins v John Mitchells
Oisins on their day can beat anyone and have a trophy already in the
cabinet this year, the Lancashire Senior League. This however is cham-
pionship and they are up against the masters, John Mitchells. The
Mitchells after a slow start in the Lancashire Senior league, have blast-
ed all before them in the Pennine League and sit on top of the pile.
They have been scoring for fun and have added to their ranks, Ruairi
McGuirk who will add strength through the middle. With Paddy Mulli-
gan and Edward Jackson around there also, the diamond looks extreme-
ly strong. Oisins however are not to be found wanting in this sector ,
with Tyrone duo Niall Donnelly and Gerard McGaughey. The latter
who is a f ormer Tyrone u-21, who scored an impressive 2-07 from
midfield in the Senior League final. His free-taking being particularly
impressive, John Mitchells should take note. Oisins have not carried on
from their trophy success and have only registered 3 points from 5
games and are the lowest of the Lancashire teams competing in the di-
vision. Oisins will hope that Mitchells are not familiar with the early
championship start and are caught cold and that the dangerous trio up
front are off their game. Messers Mickey Molloy, who adds his cute-
ness; Michael Murphy, who brings brute strength and Kiearan Lynham
who brings extreme speed to the table form the most dangerous forward
line in the county. Oisins trust their Derry duo, the speedy Chrissy
O’Connor (Drumsurn) and club captain Rory McLaughlin
(Slaughtmanus) can have an impact on proceedings; but this may not be
enough. The Mitchells have so much class from numbers 1-15 that they
should win, but not by too much.
St.Lawrences v St.Brendans
This has a real David v Goliath feel about it. St.Brendans, Sen-
ior League champions who currently sit joint top in Pennine
League Division; against St.Lawerences who are mid-table in
Division 2.Brendans who haveone of the smallest squads oper-
ating at senior level; have class players throughout the squad in
the form of Nathan Plant, John Gibney and the Connolly broth-
ers to name but a few. Indeed the siblings are key men for the
maroons, with Niall’s searing runs punching many holes
through opposition defences over the years. This is something
that St. Lawrences can just not match. Shane Goldrick will
bring experience and strength for the yellowbellies as will the
evergreen Trevor O’Grady around midfield; while ‘newcomer’
Martin Geraghty will add a bit of pace up front. The latter ini-
tially played for St.Lawrences underage, until moving back to
Sligo; he since returned quite recently and will be a welcome
addition to the forward line. Paul Duffy will hope to be on form
from the frees also. Team manager James Wray will no doubt
have his team geared up for an upset, but it looks long odds.
Brendans have the superior fitness as well as a host of match-
winners, they should be top of the group when they leave Wa-
vertree at 4:00pm.

at adult level on Tuesday night. A lot of hard work has been put in
at the underage ranks there and hopefully this will spur the club
onto greater things. All the clubs in Lancashire hope you well.
