KOTRC CLUB MEETING
May 2012 Meeting Notes
Guests
Jack Jeffries, a friend of Howard Doering. He
was a member in the 90’s. Dennis Lord – 36
year full scale pilot and rep for the upcoming
Compton airport EAA show.
Show and Tell
John Wright – Bag of Wen-Mac Crumbs. To
be restored to Cyclon level performance. He
also had a Jim Walker Firebrat. A hollow
foam wing model powered by a 1-port Babe
Bee with muffler, external tank, and 5x3 prop. It flies on 25’lines. He also showed
a Top Flite Tutor that he was given by “Mario”. Monokote covering, Max-S 35 en-
gine. He needs to reduce the tip weight, improve the hinges. It weighs 32 ounces
so it can fly on .012 lines. Currently a Silver nylon 3-blade Tornado 9x6 prop.
Joel Chesler – A Flying Aces Poster. Actually new, but made to look antique. He
got it at the Chino Airshow, which was spectacular.
Andy Borgogna – A new (expensive!) Hitec multi charger. It will do 4 batteries at
one time, each channel completely programmable for battery type, cell count, ca-
pacity and charge rate, plus balance and discharge for storage. Life is good! He no
longer lives in his garage charging batteries the day before flying!
Larry Renger – Two Cub diesels, one the crummy one from last month, the other
a near or brand new one that actually has compression! Since this meeting, the
new one has run, and although a good performer,
showed that the compression seal ring on the con-
tra piston is shot. Renger’s hobby shop happens
to stock new, improved Zytel rings in exactly the
correct sizes for the .049 and .074. Small-
parts.com is a wonderful place! Next up were
gasoline proof fuel containers, one for camping
from REI (empty), the other a Vodka bottle from

Meeting Reminder
Next Regular Meeting Tuesday
Night June 12, 2012
Fullerton Airport AFI building
4119 W. Commonwealth Avenue
Fullerton, CA 92833
Meetings start at 7:00pm.
Total Wine ($2 cheaper and filled with pretty good
Vodka). Lastly, a spray for cloth to protect it from
stains. He sprayed his new KOTRC hat with it.
Howard Doering – Speed model with a new air
scoop. This plane has a rear venturi, so it was being
starved for incoming air pressure. He now pressurizes
the fuselage. It is expected to add 2% to the top
speed. He hates Lusterkote. The Primer doesn’t sand
worth a hoot, getting all gummy and clogging the pa-
per. He will repaint the entire plane yellow. Next was
a “mousetrap” “B” dolly. He paints them fluorescent
yellow in an attempt to actually get them back.
Warren “Griller” Walker – A twin Pathfinder done in
the style of the F-82 twin Mustang. It started as a
stripped ARF. First attempt will be with a pair of Veco
Ball Bearing .19 stunt engines. LG will be set up as a
taildragger (So where would YOU put a nosegear?)
Old Business
Reminder that the next field work day is June 2nd. BE
THERE! Actually the work has been going very well and
we learn new techniques as we go along. This effort
will be for the Speed Protective Fenced Circular Im-
pregnable Well Designed Enclosed area, which seems
to be trying to grow a crop of corn. There is a speed
contest coming up and it needs major help!
Warren Walker reported on the Palmer Memorial con-
test. There was an excellent turn out and the weather
was great. Sadly, the food guys don’t make enough
money to want to come back, so we need a new ar-
rangement. Joel suggested, and it was voted to do-
nate $100 to them as a thank you for their efforts for
these past few years. The Raffle arrangements were
not optimum and got some fliers upset as the wind
picked up before their flights. Next time we will do it
during the lunch break.
A vote of thanks to Warren for the way the event came
off in general.
For the upcoming Joust, we need a new flyer. Larry to
produce it. Generally the same format as last year, a
few details to change. Look at the KOTRC.org website
for final information. We need a volunteer to shoot
photos of the final score sheets so they can be posted
on our website.
New Business
Joe Brownlee described his trip to Dallas where he met
Al Rabe. Joe got to visit his house. Al’s latest project is
an OS .46 variant of his Mustunt. Base of his finishes is
epoxy, 1 part A, 1 part B, 1 part Acetone sprayed on.
No mention of filler, or whether he just keeps sanding
and spraying. Maybe he will do an article someday on
the technique (or has he?)
Be aware that some homeless people seem to be
hanging around the park. If necessary, call the park
management.
Mike Alurac moved that non-member Mike Costner,
who did yeoman service in the last field repair day
(and he flies on the grass!) be given a club member-
ship. Voted and approved.
We need to send thanks to Bill and Elaine Heyworth for
their ongoing support of the Palmer Memorial Meet.
We are pleased that they are willing to keep us as the
hosts, as they could move it to Tucson or elsewhere if
we aren’t doing our jobs.
Andy Borgogna confirmed that we need the Bullhorn
that we voted to buy. Mike Alurac is going to Pit at the
Joust, so he bought a doozie. Hold your ears! Maybe
we need to go back to a whistle?
John Wright, acting as our club/park liaison, attended a
meeting where charges for park entry were discussed.
In the future, we will have to have a pass or pay for
each entry. The passes are to be $25 for club mem-
bers on the roster we give to them or $125 for outsid-
ers. This charge does not apply to weekdays. You will
have to have a separate ticket for each car, and it
must be applied in person by the park officials. They
have some unrealistic expectations for when this can
be done that MUST be straightened out. (Everyone on
a particular weekday, or not at all?)
Dennis Lord gave a talk about the upcoming EAA Expo
at the Compton Airport. He would like a demo and
training session of C/L planes. He wants about 5 hours
of our time. The date is Aug. 5th. Setup at 8:00, show
10:00 am to 3:45 pm. We will have to work with him,
because he expects a minute by minute schedule.
LOL, maybe ROFL.
