Magellan sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. He sailed around South America. He
sailed across the Pacific Ocean.

The King of Spain gave Magellan money for five ships and 270 men. He
wanted a faster way to get to the Spice Islands.

Magellan named the Pacific Ocean. He called it “El Mar
Pacífico.” Magellan died before he got back to Spain. Some of the men on his ship, the
Victoria, made it back.

Spices were very important then. They were used in food,
medicines and perfumes.

Ferdinand Magellan was born in Portugal in 1480. He was a very good sailor and
a naval captain.
Magellan’s voyage was over three years long. He was given
the credit for being the first man to sail around the world.
