God is Calling You by Name!

If I were to ask you, “Who are you?” what would your answer

be? What is your identity? You would probably give me your

name. Names have always been important throughout history.

In Bible times, names really meant something. It would tell a

lot about the character of a person. But is your name who you

are?

God allowed the disciples names to continue throughout history

because they were important. Their names were written

several times in the Bible to give us examples of how to be true

followers of God!

Mark 3:13–19 “Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to

him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed

twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to

have authority to drive out demons. These are the twelve he appointed: Simon (to

whom he gave the name Peter), James son of Zebedee, and his brother, John (to them

he gave the name Boanerges, which means “sons of thunder”), Andrew, Philip,

Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alpheus, Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot

and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.”

“He called to him” – it starts and ends with God. God initiated the call. Our calling

starts with God. He called to him a small group to train and minister to. Since the

beginning of the church the importance of small group training is crucial. ……God calls us

to be involved in some way or another. Do you remember God’s call in your life? For

what does God call you?

To be with Him – you are called to be with Him! He loves you and wants to be with

you, to understand his mind, to catch his spirit. This is the first in equipping any

effective ministry of discipleship.

To be sent out to preach – GO is the natural flow of Christian life! We are not called to

keep the good news but to spread it. Share God and God’s love with our friends,

families and coworkers. I believe your personal testimony and life are the most effective

ways to preach.

To cast out Demons – This is a subject many churches and Christians do not like to

talk about. But Jesus spoke about it and gave us authority in his name to cast out

spirits. Our streets, our homes as well as our hospitals are full of demons. If you have

ever seen a drug addict you know what I mean. I do not mean demons like we see in

movies, but the demons of addiction, pornography, lies, deceit and destruction to name

a few. God gives us the authority to heal those afflictions of the spirit. To bring

individuals into a right adjustment in God is often to bring healing.

Guess what! God calls you, but God does not leave you there. God will equip you and

give you the tools to succeed. Many people do not realize that they are called. Nor do

they know the impact their lives can have on another person. You may feel like a

“nobody” who does not have a purpose. But, I will tell you today that you are important

enough to have God, your creator, send his Son to die for you, so that you can have a

relationship with Him. God does not see you as a “nobody”. He knows the potential in

you to make an impact for Him.

Come to him! He is here! He is waiting for you. He is calling you. The question is do

you want to answer?

We would like to give you an opportunity to support a young man that is involved with our youth and evening service who feels called to do Mission work. Scott Borgert will study with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) this fall and then go to South East Asia to spread the Gospel. He is trying to raise funds for his training and mission work. If you feel called to help you can fill out a Donor Card and send a check to the church. You can also support him by keeping him in your prayers as one of the many missionaries that our church supports around the world.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENTS’ DAY IS SEPTEMBER 8TH!

In 1973, West Virginia began a statewide campaign to set aside a special day just for grandparents. The first Grandparents Day was set by Governor Arch Moore. Through concerted efforts on the part of individuals interested in preserving their heritage, this campaign was headed by Marian McQuade of Fayette County, mother of fifteen children. Senator Jennings Randolph (D-WV) was specially instrumental in this project. In 1973, Senator Randolph introduced a resolution in the United States Senate and in 1978, Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. September was the month chosen, signifying the “autumn years” of life, and today this event, begun by only a few, is observed by thousands throughout the United States.

THE ROLE OF GRANDPARENTS

They are teachers of God’s plan of salvation to their children and grandchildren. (Isaiah

12:2-6)

They are witnesses of how God has proven faithful to His people and to their family

specifically. (Deuteronomy 3:9)

They are family historians, holding the keys to learning about family roots and experiences

for the generations to come.

They have fun with their grandchildren and shape their self-esteem.

They are wise, non-judgmental counselors to their grandchildren.

They undergird their grandchildren with faithful prayer. (Matthew 21:22)

They represent stability to young families in dealing with change.

In talking with people who are concerned because God doesn’t seem to be answering their prayers, Pastor Bill Hybels uses a little outline he borrows:

If the request is wrong, God says, “No.” If the timing is wrong, God says, “Slow.” If you are wrong, God says, “Grow.” But if the request is right, God says, “Go.”

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things, a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. It has been celebrated as a national holiday in the United States and Canada since 1894. Labor unions themselves celebrated the first labor days in the United States, although there’s some speculation as to exactly who came up with the idea. Most historians credit Peter McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters

and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, with the original idea of a day for workers to show their solidarity. Others credit Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, NJ. The

first Labor Day parade occurred September 5, 1882, in New York City. The workers’ unions chose the first Monday in September because it was halfway between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. The idea spread across the country, and some states designated Labor Day as a holiday before the federal holiday was created. President Grover Cleveland signed a law designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day nationwide!

HOLY LAND TOUR:

MAY 12-21, 2014

In May, 2014, Educational Opportunities, the nation’s largest Christian travel agency, is sponsoring its Holy Land Classic tour featuring the bishop of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, Bishop Ken Carter, and Dr. Bob Tuttle, professor of Bible, at

Asbury Theological Seminary, Orlando, as guest lecturers. It will be a time to gain personal knowledge of the land of the Bible and a richer understanding of Jesus and his life and ministry as you travel to places he lived and taught. Rev. Gregory L. Wood (retired Pastor and former minister at Fleming St. UMC) will be hosting a group to go with him in May. Over 80 children participated in our Vacation Bible School this summer! For a week they were in Kingdom Rock, where they learned to Stand Strong for God! It was a great week and we thank everyone who gave – time, talents, donations and prayers. We couldn’t have done it without your support.

Congratulations to the KWUMC Softball Team who took second place in the First Annual Christian Conch Classic softball tournament which took place in July! Hosted by Glad Tidings Church this tournament was a great example of friendly competition. Thanks to all who participated – you were AWESOME!
