We are approaching this tiny island at 06.00 in the

morning. I can see a beautiful sunrise at the edge of the island. Waiting for a while then a small boat took us ashore to the island. A wooden gate with sign “Welcome to Satonda” greets us. There are two small neglected building in the side of the gate. Entering the

gate, a small path leads us to the center of Satonda Island. After less than 5 minutes walking, we can see a huge lake with green color water. It’s so beautiful.

Satonda island is an uninhabited island offshore of Sumbawa, a tiny island with width 4.8km and located at Nangamiru village. It is a famous island among the international scientists for its

salty lake in the middle of the island. It is a beautiful natural wonder. The lake is 0.8 km in width and the water inside the lake has tide which naturally following the high and low tide of the sea on its surrounding.

Basically, Satonda is a volcano which rising out of the sea from the 2.000 BC. And the lake inside is the caldera of the mount Satonda. In 1815 when the Mt.Tambora which located in Dompu erupted, as the largest and most devastating eruption in human history, the eruption delivers huge waves which finally fill up the lake with salt water.

The caldera now is a beautiful salt water lake; with lots of big trees grow surrounding. You will also see a lot of mysterious hanging

stones on the tree branches. The local believe these trees as the trees of hope. By finding stone or coral nearby, hang it on the highest point and make a wish, and if the stone is not falling into the lake, your wishes may come true. You may believe it or not, but these stones has beautifully decorate the lakeside.

One thing that a little bothers is the heat inside the lake area. The cone-shapedhills surrounding the lake has blocked off all breezes. But a swim in the lake will freshen things up.

Other things we can do other than swim on the lake is hiking following the step to the top of Satonda Island, discover the stunning beauty of the lake which looks like bottle shape in its reflection on the lake surface. On the way down, you will see a lot of big trees. It is home to enormous fruit bats and various birds that inhabited the island.

After an hour exploring the island, it is time for snorkeling on the beach. We were a little bit disappointed seeing some damaged coral. It caused of irresponsible fishermen who used bomb to catch fish, but there are stilla few good spots with lots of beautiful coral, beautiful starfish, and colorful fishes.

Satonda which has become a National Park in 1999 is a lovely little island with quite beach and stunning lake view, a great place to escape and enjoy the natural beauty of the East. It is not easy to get to the island, especially when you travel through the mainland, we chose to get on board of one the travel company regular cruise to Komodo Island with a stop at Satonda Island. It all paid off with the unforgettable scenery of Satonda Island. Selamat jalan - jalan.

M A G N I F I C E N T Menjangan

Menjangan Bali is where my heart always lies. Not because of a person. But because it is the place

where I fell so madly in love with what the sea has to offer. The clear turquoise water, the lively corals, the colorful fishes, and of course the magnificent wall underneath.

The glorious long underwater cliff around the island becoming more of an addiction. The wall intrigued me, made my adrenaline to go far beyond. It made me curious and pushes me to explore just using my snorkeling equipment. This is the spot where I finally able to do free dive for the first time.

Started in 2011, when 2 of my best friends asked me to go on a trip together to celebrate New Year together. We went to Bromo Mountain first and then head to Menjangan Bali. Honestly I didn’t even know where the island was. I just thought it would be great to snorkeling again; I was really into snorkeling after couple of trips to some islands before.

We arrived at the port to Menjangan Island in the morning, after crossing by from Java. The port was small, there’s another big port to go Menjangan Island where all the tourists go. Apparently we took the quiet and a bit further one. The

journey with the boat was 45 minutes until we arrived on the island.

So what is the meaning of Menjangan? “Menjangan” means deer. Yes, there are plenty of deer on the island that has been protected by the government. As Menjangan island is a part of the West Bali National Park. It is near Gilimanuk, the port that connects Java Island and Bali Island.

The island itself is prohibited for tourist to visit, as it is a holy place use by the local people to pray. You would occasionally see abundant of elders, families, kids back and forth the island, wearing white clothes and bringing many offerings for their prayer.

I was lucky to meet a local guide, who taught me how to go dive with one single breath. I was able to go in, but could not go that deep. Plus, when you see the wall of Menjangan Island, you would stun and scared at the same time.

The corals were so beautiful on the wall, and amount of countless fishes swimming around you. But when you look down, you could not even see the bottom of the sea. All pitch black. Suddenly you realized that you are totally in the middle of the ocean.

Lots of imagination slashed here and there through my mind. What if there were sharks? What if I dove and couldn’t reach

up again? What if something pulled my leg? It was the reason that I couldn’t push harder to go deeper.

Nevertheless, it was a memorable sight of the most beautiful underwater world I have ever seen. Of course, I was proud of myself that I could dive in a bit deeper and I became determine to practice even more.

When I moved to Bali couple of years later, I decided to visit Menjangan Bali again. Many years have passed and Menjangan Island was still gorgeous like before.

The different thing is I am the one who changed. Through so many practices and snorkeling in couple of places, I became confident under the sea. I didn’t feel nervous and scared anymore. It felt so natural to dip myself into the deep blue sea. I felt relax and enjoy just being on the water.

The sea became my second home. So this time, I would conquer all of the prettiest spots on the wall. I had a chance to do scuba dive with my diver friends in couple of spots. It was breathtaking as ever.

Especially when you dove on the wall, it was tremendous view as you floating, following the current next to the wall.

Diving was fun; it was the calm and relaxes way to enjoy the underwater view. But for me, it’s has always been snorkeling and free dive, free diving also pushes me to the edge and made me wonder how far I could go. It challenges me,yet it made me feel connected with the sea.

Later I introduced Menjangan Bali to my snorkelling friends who live in Bali afterwards. They loved it and fell in love right away. It took us 5 hours drive from south of Bali and arrived at night in a hotel that we usually booked in Pemuteran. One ritual that we always do is swimming in the pool at midnight with the stars and moon above.

The journey to get there was long, but it was fun and exciting when you shared it with friends. In addition with the spectacular view of the island that will blow your mind. Menjangan Island never disappointed us.

Daeng City, that what the locals called the city of Makassar. A city located in South Sulawesi in the

eastern part of Indonesia. As one of the diverse cultural city in

Indonesia, Makassar had plenty of cultural heritages to offer. One like the Balla Lompoa. A reconstruction of the former Gowa kingdom’s Sultan Palace, who once rule most of Southern Sulawesi.

It was first build in 1935 during the time of the 31st Sultan, I Mangngi-mangngi Daeng Matutu. What was now a Museum once serve as the Palace to Sultans of Goa kingdom. The Name itself translated as The Great House.

The house builds upon the Bugis tradition, the ethnicity of South Sulawesi. They are famous with their wooden staged house construction that was also implied to the

Balla Lompoa. Almost all the entire building is made of Borneo ironwood.

The building consist of several main parts, the main room is 60 x 40 Meters with the royal bedroom, the main exhibition hall, Royal rooms each 6 x 5 meter in size, and the with 40 x 4,5 meter sized main terrace where the sultans used to meet up with their royal guesses. The house also has many windows as it is also a trademark of a Bugis traditional house.

Now the great house serves as a Museum of the Gowa Kingdom. It house more than 140 priceless royal collection of Gowa Kingdom from the first Sultan Tomanurunga from the 13th century to the last the 36th Sultan whom the reign ends in 1960.

Here, several weaponries are also exhibit, one like the antique cannon or the soldier’s spears. The royal family tree can also be seen here.

The third room is the largest, it is where the sultan’s throne is kept and also other important collection such as the jewel decorated gold made Sultan’s crown. The entire room is decorated like how it was once used house the Sultan to gives visitors the look and experience the former glory of Gowa Kingdom.

Once a year a ceremony is also held in the Balla Lompoa, it is known as the

Kalompoang. It is a ceremony lead by a community elder to clean and weight the Sultan’s crown with a holy water; it is believed that if the crown loses its weight thatW means a bad luck for people of Gowa.

Balla Lompoa is located in the Sungguminasa city, which is directly adjacent to the city of Makassar. It can be reach easily with a chartered car or local transportation. If Makassar in on your list of trip, then Balla Lompoa is surly a place to visit, to see and learn more about the former glory of Gowa kingdom and its heritage.

That is the words that describe what Senggigi is back in the old days. Now two decades later, it

seems like the three little islands on the off the northwest coast of Lombok is getting more spotlight. But Senggigi still got its own charm.

Senggigi can be considered as the center of tourism in Lombok Island. It is about 20 minutes north of the outskirts of the island’s capital Mataram and about 55 km southeast of the new Lombok International Airport in Praya or about 2 hours drive to reach Senggigi. If you choose to travel by plane to Lombok, there are various ways to get to Senggigi. You could

choose to use either the airport taxi, the airport bus, local transport (The Bemo) or you could easily book for a pick up by a local travel agency.

Senggigi was known as the most developed part of Lombok, as far as tourism is concerned, especially during the late 1990s when Lombok was hyped as the next Bali. You can find budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation, a selection of nightlife activities, sweeping bays, even forest hiking activities. Senggigi is a great place to use as a home base for exploring Lombok.

The whole area is formed by several adjacent yet subtly different areas all lying along the same 2 lane

an old copy of the Indonesia Handbook, from 1991 has this description in it “The coral and snorkeling at this popular beach area, 6km north of Ampenan, is fantastic-4 straight kms of pure white sand, blue-green sea, and no crowds.”

Alinda Hartarini ; Young travel lover. Her passion to explore all over Indonesia and experience its beauties.

10 km span of coastal road, with its beautiful west facing beaches, this is may be Senggigi’s raison d’etre.

This 10 KM beach provides a clean beach breeze and crashing waves are so seducing. A pathway has recently been built around the peninsular and it can be a pleasant promenade especially during the sunsets.

Here in in Senggigi the sun setting with a perfect composition, don’t miss the comeliness of the sun by just sitting on the beach with a drink on your hand and enjoying the afternoon at Senggigi beach. The setting blood-red sun sinks into the surf next to the giant triangular cone of Bali’s Mount Agung, truly a view to remember.

Senggigi is also known of its calm waves, which allow tourists to enjoy the underwater beauty by snorkeling in its clean water with an unforgettable the coral reef and marine life.

Another thing to see around Senggigi is the Pura Batu Bolong, 2 km south of Senggigi. Small Hindu temple located in a

scenic spot at a small headland overlooking Senggigi beach, named after a rock (batu) with a hole (bolong). At the tip of the headland is an empty chair representing Brahma, the god of creation. This is also known as a perfect place to see the sunsets.

Lombok’s tourism sector has had a difficult past decade and tourism activity in Senggigi went through a very subdued period with many developments halted and businesses closed. Recently things have been starting to improve again, with new villas and hotels going up and new shops and tourism ventures opening. It is now becoming increasingly popular with visitors seeking out the stunning scenery and unique culture and flavors of Lombok in Senggigi; the gateway of Lombok.

A perennial favorite among native Betawi, nasi uduk literally means “mixed rice” in Betawi dialect, related

with Indonesian term aduk (“mix”). The name describes the dish preparation itself which requires more ingredients than common steamed rice cooking and also a pinwheel of various meat and vegetable accoutrements as additional side dishes.

Nasi uduk is made by cooking rice soaked in coconut milk instead of water, along with clove, cassia bark, and lemongrass to add aroma. Sometimes knotted pandan leaves are thrown into the rice while steaming to give it more fragrance. The coconut milk and spices gave oily rich tastes to the cooked rice. The bawang goreng (fried shallots) sprinkled on the top of the rice prior to serving. Assortments of dishes are usually served as side dishes.

Sold in warung (stall) or other eating establishments are commonly offered with assortment of side dishes, chosen according to client’s desire. However the pre-packed basic nasi uduk is almost always includes fried chicken, tempe(soybean cake), teri kacang (anchovy with peanuts), and shredded omelet, with sambal kacang (peanut sambal) topped with emping (melinjo nut crackers).

Some of the side dishes offered with nasiuduk areempal (fried beef),krechek (cow skin in spicy coconut milk), bihun goreng (fried rice vermicelli) and lot of other various dishes.

It’s cheap, fast, and popular among lunch time crowds. Don’t miss this complete set of the taste of Indonesia in single plate on your culinary adventure.
