Those who visited the Jasper Museum this summer were rewarded with two excellent temporary exhibits -the “Brian Luckman Glaciology Exhibit” and “This Wild Spirit Exhibit” by Colleen Skidmore- as well as our permanent Gallery. The weather and the increase in visitors to Jasper this summer translated into an increase in attendance. If there was an upside to this summer’s dismal weather, it was that admissions revenue was up at the Museum.

The Board and staff are always striving to get the word out there that, a visit to the Museum is well worthwhile for visitors and long-time resident alike. We intend to lose our status as Jasper’s “Hidden Gem” and become “the“ place to go when visiting Jasper! It is appreciated each and every time you, the membership, make this recommendation to visiting friends and relatives, people you meet on the street, neighbours and customers in your place of business.

Spring Outing at Redpass May 29, 2016

Thanks to Sue Marko, Administrator of the Valemount Museum & Archives for organizing this outing. Thanks to Paul Hardy and Sun Dog Tours for providing the bus and driver to transport the JYHS members to Red Pass. Thanks also to Steve & TAGS for the coffee & hot chocolate. The Jasper contingent met the members of Valemount Museum at Red Pass, where Linda Blackman, who grew up in Red Pass, gave the history of the village. During the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway & the Canadian Northern Railway, Mile 27 was just

another camp along the rail line that was abandoned for a number of years. In 1921 both railways were amalgamated into Canadian National Railway when GTP & CNoR declared bankruptcy. Mile 27 was then named Red Pass, after the red tinted rock on the ridges above and became a divisional point for the CNR. At Red Pass the rail split heading either south to Kamloops or North to Prince George. Red Pass became a hamlet with a general store, school, post office and railway station. The hotel was built in 1924 and later a police barrack was added. Residents of Red Pass would travel east and west on the train. The "road" was unimproved and hazardous until 1962 when the highway was upgraded and the need for Red Pass diminished. Trains could now travel longer distances and did not need the stop in Red Pass for servicing. After 1965, railroaders found new jobs and the police were transferred out. The hotel had burned down in 1949, the post office & general store closed in 1976 and in 1991 the little town ceased to exist. Pia Pooli came from Italy as a young bride to meet her husband, Giovanni, in Red Pass. She had put aside enough money from her savings so that if she didn't like it she could leave but "we found we were in a good community" so she unpacked her bags and stayed. Vicki Olekshy-Wallace's grandparents lived in Red Pass from 1935 - 1947 and her grandfather is buried there. People from Red Pass came to Jasper by train, to see the doctor and to shop from time to time. A group of women & children, from Jasper, would get together and travel by train to Red Pass area to pick blueberries. The freight train would drop them off along Moose Lake early in the day and another train would pick them up later in the day and bring them back to Jasper. Louise & Bill Kronstedt moved to Red Pass in 1946 to manage the Red Pass Hotel. After the hotel burned down in 1949, they moved to Kelowna for a year and then came to live in Jasper. There was a Japanese internment camp just west of Red Pass. Linda Blackman led a tour of the "Main Street" pointing out the site of various buildings before we all got on our respective buses and headed home. th, we provided volunteers to help with the Totem’s

Spring Run Off at Lake Annette. Thank you to Rogier, Keandra & Nalani Gruys, Noriko Stevens, Sheila Couture, Jennifer Wilson and Patti Brososky. Canada Day Canada Day is the largest fundraiser for the Museum. This year we were able to raise $10,747.95, we could not do this without volunteers. Thank you Pattie Pavlov and the Canada Day Committee for all of their hard work!

The Hotdog Cart This is the third summer for the hotdog cart , we ran it at Aboriginal Day, Canada Day and every Wednesday at the Farmer’s Market. When we first ran it at the Farmer’s Market, we sold 30 hotdogs, then it was 70 hotdogs, and we now sell on average 130. Thank you to Sheila Couture, Sandy Birks, Janice Yeaman, Reiko Oka, Wayne Kennedy ( set up and take down), Ken & Bob Baxter (onions), Cesar Argueta (maintenance), Sysco (donation of hotdogs) and Robinson (gift cards) The hotdog cart was brought in 2014 for $3,300.00. The cart was paid off that summer and made a profit of $2,127.36. 2015, it made a profit of $7,210.60 and this year $6,360.65.

This will be the last summer that Sheila and I will run the hotdog cart, it has been great fun but a lot of work. It will be left up to the board to decide to what to do with the hotdog cart, sell it, or maybe someone else will step up to run it. Sad to see it go, as it has such a good following at the Farmer’s Market and keeps the Museum in the forefront. Sheila would say to each person as she handed them their hotdog, ‘Thank you for supporting the Museum”. That sure goes along way. Chocolate Almond Sales One may have noticed that the Museum is no longer selling chocolate almonds. Fred Kofin’s first order was June 15, 1988. Sheila Couture took over ordering, delivering and collecting the funds in April, 2010. Chocolate Almonds were sold year round by local businesses and raised approximately $3000/yr. However over the years the number of business carrying them dwindled and the last of the chocolates were delivered on June 22, 2016. Thanks to Tekarra Color, Home Hardware, Jasper Tire, Avalanche ESSO, Jasper Liquor & Wine Store, Jasper Wine Merchants, Becker's, Bear Hill Lodge, Sun Dog, Pine Bungalows & Free Wheel for their support over the years.

Supporting the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and the Jasper Right to Read Society. This year’s Duck Race was another huge success. Thank you to the Community of Jasper for your support and to all of the volunteers from the Jasper Historical Society (Jasper Museum) and the Jasper Right to Read Society and all of those who came out to dump ducks and those canoers/kayakers for picking them up! Jasper in January: Street Party –“Castor Tails” Hopscotch Casino: February 20 and 21, 2017 We applied to do a Casino through the AGLC and our scheduled dates are Feb. 20 & 21, 2017 at the Apex Casino in St. Albert. This is new for the Museum and we hope to be able to make between $17,000 to $19,000. It will be a 2 day event in St Albert and we need about 13 volunteers. The Gift of Giving

Consider giving a portion of your estate to the JYHS in order to assist in long term survival and the furthering of Society goals and dreams. Such a gift can be set up at any stage of life! It is recommended that you inform the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society of your donation either by letter or by providing them with a copy of the page of your will with your donation. If you are considering putting restrictions on the donation then you should talk to the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society first to be sure that your restrictions can be accommodated.

It was the one year anniversary since my Dad's death on September 9th. Hard to believe it has been a year. When a loved ones dies, we go through the first of everything without them; holidays, birthdays, and family gatherings. Then it becomes the small everyday things that we miss. With him being so involved with the Museum, it was not being on the board with him, not serving up spirits at the Hopscotch, not seeing him behind the grill at Canada Day, at the Spring Outing he would organize with my Mom, or coming for a hotdog at the Farmers' Market, and being the best seller of duck tickets. It is also missing his love for history, be it Jasper, his family history or the history of the world. And the importance of history, preserving, learning, which is why he was such a strong believer in our Museum. His favorite past time was to either read or watch anything to do with history, whether it be the Vikings, religion, World Wars, or politics. He knew it all and was a wealth of information. He was my go-to person, but now I have to do my own research. I would much rather hear his voice! Anna Marie Couture.

Members receive a special edition laminate life time membership card. Lifetime memberships can also be purchased as a gift or in memory of someone. It would

make a perfect birthday, Christmas or anniversary gift for that person who just has everything.

Kokum Honours Indigenous History in J N P

A fundamental piece of the history of Jasper National Park stands in the gardens of the Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives .The museum recognizes the important contribution that the Aseniwuche Winewak (AWN) or the “Rocky Mountain People” have made to the region. The museum, with assistance from the Aseniwuche Winewak Nation of Canada, based near Grande Cache, and Parks Canada, is pleased to announce the creation of a permanent sculpture. Professional artist Crystal C. Mossing was commissioned to create a four foot tall bronze sculpture of an elderly indigenous woman gathering berries and herbs. The sculpture entitled "Kokum," the Cree word for Grandmother, was completed in the fall of 2016. Mossing is best known for her work on various projects for the Calgary Stampede over the last decade. A permanent display case in the museum features representations of traditional food from the Aseniwuche Winewak community. The display highlights production techniques that are still used by Elders who identify as Rocky Mountain People. In the Grande Cache area, these Elders continue to hunt, make dry meat, scrape and tan hides, and make moccasins and other clothes from the hides. They decorate the hides with highly skilled beadwork. The display is in the entrance to the main gallery. Former Museum Manager, Andy Klimach, is pleased with the partnership that was developed to turn this vision into a reality. “The project is a gesture of good faith and forgiveness and the next step in the ongoing process of reconnection to the Jasper area by the Rocky Mountain People.” Thank you to Crystal Mossing of Art on the Range and Garry McDonald, Rachelle McDonald and Bonnie MacPhee of the AWN for all their help in making this project a success.

Membership has its perks, please support the history of Jasper and area by becoming a member. Membership (includes GST) Individual $30.00 per year. Family $40.00 per year. Patron $100.00 per year with a portion tax receipted.

Membership in the Jasper Yellowhead Historical Society needs to be renewed yearly, with the exception of the Lifetime Membership.

The Historical Society fundraises and supports /oversees our Jasper Museum and Archives.

Presidents Message

Bylaw Special Meeting 10 am November 8, 2016

The museum exists only because of the passion, hard work and generosity of countless volunteers, donors and a few talented and hardworking staff. The greatest reward for all this toil is the enjoyment and appreciation of the visitors. A healthier bank balance doesn't hurt either! The Board is currently one member short with the resignation of Nancy Robbins. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please let us know. While we don’t pay a finder’s fee at least the friend that you turn in will be eternally grateful. The Three -Year Plan is once again being updated by the Board. While this exercise has potential to be daunting and sobering, it is also a time to look forward and dream. Despite hours spent fretting over balance sheets, in a time of decreased revenue and increased expenses, there are also hours spent brainstorming new ways to develop the natural potential of the Society and the Museum as well as the eternal quest for new economies.

“If you change nothing, nothing will change”- Anonymous Much of the Board’s optimism is grounded in you, the membership. Members have proven to be dedicated to the goals of the Society and it is reflected in your participation and contributions. In this vein, please remember your spirit and bright ideas are always welcome in the planning process, both by the Board and the Museum staff. Don’t be shy! Even criticism is accepted graciously. Stay involved. Your involvement will be so appreciated. I would like to conclude with expressing appreciation for the commitment and wisdom of my fellow board members, acknowledge Nancy Robbins for the significant contribution she brought in her time on the board, and of course, the dedicated and tireless work of the Museum and Archive staff. Prior to our first Coffee Hour a Special Members Meeting will be held Tuesday November 8th at 10:00am to vote on a further change to bylaw 8.2. that deals with the "auditing" of the Society's books. Consumer and Corporate Affairs will not accept the wording "compilation, review or audit" and will only accept "audit "so we must vote in a Special Resolution to change the wording. The wording affects further casino possibilities. Further explanation will be given at the meeting, or call Warren Waxer at 852-5713, or e-mail thewaxers@shaw.ca.

This year's Historical Society's Fall Outing took us to the Maligne Range on Sunday September 18, near the 6th bridge picnic site. Karen gave us a history of this area, followed by an appreciation award to Mike Dillon for his constant help to the museum. AND then the tour of the "Range Nerve Centre" with JImmy Chesser. Old saddles and hammers, barn humour and a love of horses was apparent in the stories of this Barn Boss at Jasper's Parks Canada Range.

And then we learned that the horses there appreciate Blues Music to keep them calm! This was one place many have never seen as the Range is generally off limits.

Mini Outings and Jasper’s History

Members receive this newsletter twice a year, provide life to the Historical Society and Museum operations and receive invitations by email to various museum events and outings. Our most recent membership roll has 205 members but since 2015 only 152 are current, 31 of those are patrons and there are 9 life members. Patronage is easy. Patrons pay $100 per year and after the individual or family membership is deducted the balance is tax receipted. (Another idea is to donate the full $100 patronage and then add on your membership fees.) Thanks you to our Patrons for your support! And our Patrons current from 2015 are….

Summer mini outings for the summer of 2016, though wet and cool, were insightful and well received. An early start came in April with a tour of 812 Patricia Street, an unusual flat roof home from the 50’s. Then onto an historical look at the 600 block Connaught and its early businesses in June. July had us learning and touring the library complex. Out to the Stone Cottage, the greens keepers home at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in August. In September we celebrated 80 years of Pine Bungalows. The outing researchers and the hosts at the various locations gave us another view of early Jasper through their knowledge and passion. Thank You!
