Since!arriving!in!Ethiopia,!I’ve!loved!to!joke!about!how!different!my!life!here!is!than!ever!before.!In!America,!I!was!a!girly@girl!social!butterfly.!Here,!I’ll!go!38!days!without!washing!my!hair!and!gladly!spend!an!entire!weekend!alone!in!my!house,!reading.!

!Lately,!though,!the!littlest!things!remind!me!of!life!in!America!and!I’m!constantly!realizing!how!similar!my!two!worlds!actually!are.!(It’s!almost!like!we’re!on!the!same!

In!this!world,!Nourish,!my!little!15@year@old!host!brother,!is!my!absolute!favorite!person,!bar!none.!We’re!always!joking!around,!I’m!always!pinching!his!cheeks!and!cooing!over!his!cute!baby!smile,!and!whenever!I!find!12@foot!spiders!in!my!house,!he’s!always!the!first!person!I!call.!No!matter!how!anti@social!I’m!feeling,!I!always!want!to!hang!out!with!Nourish!and!whenever!I’m!having!a!bad!day,!I!can!always!count!on!him!to!make!me!smile.!!Snapshot!1:!Nourish!comes!over!one!night!with!a!radio!and!boom@box!speakers,!and!we!blast!Ethiopian!dance!music!in!my!kitchen.!He!finds!my!makeup,!asks!what!it!is,!and!lets!me!demonstrate!every!item’s!purpose!by!using!his!face!as!a!mannequin.!By!the!end!of!the!night,!Nourish!is!decked!out!with!foundation,!blush,!“smoky!eyes”!eye!shadow,!mascara,!eyeliner!and!bright!red!lipstick.!I!then!make!him!model!and!I!take!pictures!while!he!parades!around!the!house.!!While!part!of!me!will!always!see!Nourish!as!a!cute!little!kid,!he!started!high!school!this!year!and!is!hitting!the!awkward!teenage!years!hard.!His!face!has!recently!been!breaking!out!with!pimples!and!he’s!mortified,!especially!when!worrying!about!what!other!kids!at!school!will!think.!I’ve!never!had!a!pimple!issue!and!don’t!even!own!face!wash,!so!I!spent!an!entire!night!Googling!different!homemade!acne!remedies!for!him!to!try.!I!found!about!two!million!of!them!and!the!next!morning,!tried!about!a!million!out!on!Nourish.!!Snapshot!2:!Nourish!is!lying!on!my!front!steps!and!I’m!dripping!raw!egg!yolk!all!over!his!face.!Ethiopia!

doesn’t!have!cucumbers,!so!I!rest!cold,!wet!cotton!squares!on!his!eyes!instead.!He!spends!the!rest!of!the!week!calling!me!“Dr.!Erin”!and!by!the!following!Monday,!most!of!his!pimples!are!gone.!!In!this!world,!my!five@year@old!neighbor!Yonas,!or!“Abby”!as!I!like!to!call!him,!follows!me!around!like!a!shadow.!The!instant!I!leave!my!front!door,!his!“Erin!radar”!goes!off!and!he!runs!to!greet!me.!Whenever!I’m!bored,!I!go!outside!my!house,!knowing!that!Yonas!will!also!come!out!within!5!seconds,!ready!to!run!around!and!play.!!Snapshot!3:!Yonas,!my!“special!little!helper,”!agrees!to!bring!my!water!bucket!to@and@from!the!tap!as!I!refill!my!water!storage!containers!one!Saturday!morning,!so!I!don’t!have!to!leave!my!house!or!wait!outside!as!the!bucket!fills.!When!his!mother!later!tries!to!get!him!to!do!the!same!thing!with!her!bucket,!he!refuses!and!runs!away!to!play!with!his!friends.!!Yonas!and!his!single!mother!are!new!to!Adet,!having!moved!from!a!small!rural!village!to!live!with!his!aunt.!His!first!kindergarten!classes!started!last!week,!and!every!day!at!around!1:30!pm,!his!mother!paces!around!outside!our!compound;!she!tries!to!look!busy!but!is!noticeably!nervous.!Like!clockwork,!she’ll!knock!on!my!door!at!1:45!and!ask!for!the!time.!She!doesn’t!own!a!watch!and!she!has!to!pick!Yonas!up!from!school!at!2:00.!When!she!returns!home!with!Yonas!in@hand,!she!is!beaming,!and!again!knocks!so!Yonas!can!tell!me!everything!he!learned!that!day.!!Every!day,!when!I!see!her!early!afternoon!pacing!and!late!afternoon!pride,!I!can’t!help!but!think!of!all!the!mothers!in!the!States!who!are!also!sending!their!kids!to!school!for!the!first!time.!We’re!worlds!and!worlds!apart,!but!so!many!moments!and!so!many!feelings!are!exactly!the!same.!Because!when!you!really!think!about!it,!life!is!life.!People!are!people.!Family!is!family.!No!matter!where!you!are!in!the!world!and!no!matter!where!in!the!world!you!come!from,!love!is!love.!•!

Chad%Miller!!!Can!we!have!a!talk!…!about!storks?!Most!PCVs!have!had!some!contact!with!storks,!but!few!have!tried!to!really!integrate!with!them.!Some!may!only!know!one!type!of!stork!and!paint!with!broadAbrush!generalizations!to!tar!all!the!rest.!For!instance,!every!PCV!who's!been!to!Hawassa!has!observed!or!taken!part!in!a!dialogue!such!as!the!following:!! !Klaus:!“Who's!that!shimagale!standing!at!the!bajaj!stop?! !Ashley:!“Why,!that's!no!little!old!man,!Klaus,!that's!a!Marabou!Stork!”! !Klaus:!“Zounds!!!I!thought!storks!delivered!babies!and!lived!in!chimneys...”!Ashley:!“Not!these!storks.!The!Marabou!is!our!largest!stork,!widespread!here!in!Ethiopia,!and!not!just!found!around!lakes,!like!here,!but!may!be!found!around!less!attractive!spots,!such!as!city!dumps.!In!fact,!next!time!you're!having!ice!cream!in!the!Kera!neighborhood!of!Addis!(at!the!ice!cream!spot!that!might!or!might!not!be!better!than!our!own!Italian!ice!spot!here)!after!your!burger!at!Sishu!(which!might!or!might!not!be!better!than!our!own!beloved!Tropical!Burger),!look!up!to!the!skies!above!the!slaughterhouse–you!just!might!catch!a!glimpse!of!a!Marabou!or!two!in!flight.”!Klaus:!“Fascinating!!Can!you!tell!me!more?!Like,!what!about!that!big!pouch!and!those!white!legs?”!Ashley:!“But!of!course!!I'm!a!veritable!font!of!knowledge!on!the!subject.!The!Marabou!actually!has!two!inflatable!air!sacs!–!a!bright!red!one!on!the!back!of!the!neck!and!the!huge!one!that!hangs!down!in!the!front.!And,!believe!it!or!not,!their!legs!are!actually!grey!in!color,!but!sometimes!appear!white!because,!they've…!well…!they!have!colored!their!legs!with!their!own!droppings...”!Klaus:!“Thanks!so!much,!Ashley,!I!think!I!now!know!more!than!enough!about!storks!”!

But!is!Klaus!correct!here?!As!I've!said,!most!PCVs!know!the!Marabou,!which!many!find!intimidating!and!ugly.!But!they!may!not!have!raised!their!awareness!about!the!extended!family!of!storks!in!Ethiopia.!Yes,!for!the!intrepid!volunteer,!there's!much!more!to!be!seen!and!done!where!storks!are!concerned,!and!maybe!we!could!use!some!gentle!capacity!building.!In!my!own!case,!when!I!was!on!site!visit!in!a!land!of!perpetual!rain,!wind,!and!hail!storms!known!as!Debre!Markos,!one!of!the!things!that!got!me!through!was!studying!some!large!and!graceful!birds!that!flew!between!the!heights!of!unfinished!buildings!and!perched!on!the!highest!scaffolding…!Abdim's!Storks!!They!disappeared!for!a!year!and!then!came!back…!intraAAfrican!migrants!!And!later!on!in!my!service,!when!I!hiked!to!an!outlying!village!known!as!Wuhasaar!(a!place!that,!as!its!name!suggests,!is!too!swampy!to!farm!or!build!on),!I!spied!an!incredible!sight…!dark!birds!with!gleaming!white!necks!feeding!in!the!wet!grass…!you!guessed!it,!WoolyANecked!Storks!!Alas,!both!of!these!species!are!fairly!common,!but!the!lucky!PCV!may!have!even!more!excitement!in!store.!There's!the!SaddleABilled,!whose!eponymous!appendage!sports!the!striking!color!combinations!of!candy!corn;!the!African!Openbill,!which,!with!its!gapped!bill,!may!appear!to!be!constantly!snarling;!the!clumsy!looking!yet!adorable!and!extremely!rare!Shoebill!(not!a!true!stork!but!close!enough!for!your!average!GANiner),!and!still!a!few!more.!!!!So!when!you're!out!and!about,!especially!near!water!or!wetlands,!keep!your!eyes!peeled…!start!seeing!storks!!

!��!��Diamox!side!effects!have!started!to!kick!in.!Tingling!fingers!and!the!need!to!relieve!myself!every!hour.!Camp!was!at!3800!meters.!Much!colder!than!the!previous!camp,!well!below!freezing.!We!were!greeted!by!a!nice!cake!of!ice!on!our!tent!door!in!the!morning.!Our!lunch!destination!was!Lava!Tower.!The!base!of!the!tower!is!4600!meters,!the!same!elevation!as!our!final!camp!before!the!summit!push.!

The!entire!day,!Kilimanjaro!towered!above!us,!its!features!coming!into!tighter!focus,!as!we!inched!closer!and!closer.!We!were!above!several!layers!of!clouds!!!

now,!and!the!wind!started!!causing!problems.!More!layers!!of!clothing!were!added.!Lava!Tower!was!cold,!so!we!huddled!together,!Katherine!!donning!her!poncho!into!a!!makeshift!tent!against!the!wind.!!The!weather!didn't!bother!!everyone!though,!as!we!saw!!alpine!mice!scurrying!around!the!!boulders!strewn!about!the!base!!of!the!tower.!After!lunch!we!descended!quickly!!to!recover!elevation!and!warm!our!!half[frozen!bones.!Two!routes!!merged!during!the!day!so!the!valley!!was!dotted!with!tents.!On!three!!sides!sheer!rock!faces!rose!around!!us.!Our!tents!sat!precariously!close!!to!the!valley!opening,!where!it!!rapidly!descended.!Above!rose!!Uhuru.!!!

The!day!was!up!and!down,!in!and!out!of!the!sun.!There's!no!complaining!anymore;!just!putting!our!heads!down!and!getting!down!to!the!business!of!reaching!the!goal,!which!was!still!mockingly!looking!down!on!us.!!

The!days!won't!be!the!real!test.!That!will!be!midnight!tomorrow.!6C7!hours!up!to!the!summit!and!4!back!down.!That's!when!we'll!see!what!we're!made!of.!I!hope!everyone!in!the!group!makes!it.!

Today!we!passed!the!last!water!point,!a!stream!trickling!down!from!the!hidden!glaciers!above.!Pure,!delicious,!water,!but!it!does!make!our!timetable!stand!out!a!bit!starker.!We'll!only!get!one!shot!at!this.!

�#��Tonight!is!the!night!we!have!been!waiting!for.!We!finally!made!base!camp!today!for!lunch.!It!sprawled!across!a!ridge!and!off!to!both!sides.!The!biggest!camp,!it!holds!both!prospective!summiteers!and!those!who!have!just!returned.!During!the!day!we!told!stories!to!keep!our!mind!off!the!walk!and!tiredness!of!our!bodies.�

Uhuru!Peak,!our!destination,!had!never!appeared!more!real.!GlacierCcarved!slopes!rose!immediately!in!front!of!us.!Above!that!actual!glaciers,!moving!at!their!own!minuscule!pace,!were!embedded!in!their!mountain!grooves.!Even!though!we!were!more!or!less!at!the!equator,!the!elevation!of!Kili!was!enough!to!support!these!ancient!carvers!of!valleys.!How!old!was!the!water!that!made!up!these!glaciers?!The!boulders!and!cliffs,!nooks!and!crannies,!were!now!stark!to!the!naked!eye.!This!was!it.!

We!ate!lunch!and!tried!to!sleep!through!the!afternoon!until!an!early!dinner.!At!midnight!we'll!awake!for!one!of!the!longest!walks!of!our!lives.!This!is!it.!This!is!why!we!came!here. !!

Nick!and!his!group!heard!about!their!tour!company,!African!Scenic!Safaris,!by!word!of!mouth.!The!group!was!satisfied!with!both!the!Kili!trip!and!safari!that!ASS!organized!afterwards,!however!there!are!definitely!cheaper!options!available!for!climbing!Kilimanjaro.!The!individual!cost!was!$1600!per!person!for!the!trek.!•!!

Imagine!it's!an!average!Saturday!and!you!walk!to!the!market!to!buy!eggs.!A!group!of!people!has!picked!up!that!you!use!the!same!tote!every!week!to!buy!eggs.!As!you!enter!the!market,!someone!relays!that!you've!brought!your!egg!bag.!Upon!reaching!the!egg!section,!you!find!someone!has!bought!all!the!eggs!and!is!selling!them!at!a!25Acent!mark!up.!The!same!happens!across!the!whole!market,!with!almost!every!item!being!sold!at!a!slightly!higher!price!by!a!middleman!who!adds!no!value.!Now,!picture!that!happening!millions!of!times!on!an!equity!market.!What!you'd!have!is!high!frequency!trading,!the!fascinating!and!maddening!subject!of!Michael!Lewis'!Flash&Boys:&A&Wall&Street&Revolt.!!If!you've!ever!read!a!Michael!Lewis!book,!then!the!structure!of!Flash&Boys!will!be!familiar!territory:!a!few!outsiders!picked!up!on!a!trend!that!didn't!seem!quite!right,!fought!the!system,!and!pointed!out!a!serious!flaw!in!the!way!an!institution!operated.!That!doesn't!mean!it's!boring!by!any!means;!I!thought!this!was!Lewis'!most!entertaining!and!thoughtAprovoking!book!yet.!Partly!that's!because!he!found!great!characters!(Brad!Katsuyama,!Rob!Park,!Ronan!Ryan,!Sergey!Aleynikov,!and!John!Schwall)!and!brought!their!stories!to!life.!Lewis!always!does!that,!though,!and!Katsuyama!can't!compete!with!Billy!Beane,!in!terms!of!quotability.!!What!makes!this!particular!book!so!thoughtAprovoking!is!the!surprisingly!scathing!critique!Lewis!hurls!at!Wall!Street.!On!his!recent!promotional!tour,!Lewis!has!been!unabashed!when!reciting!his!thesis:!"the!market!is!rigged."!Certainly,!that!hasn't!won!him!many!friends!on!Wall!Street!and!at!Bloomberg.!!The!problem!for!those!detractors!is!that!Flash&Boys!paints!a!clear!picture!!of!an!unfair!equity!market!and!a!host!of!financial!institutions!intent!on!!keeping!it!rigged.!Though!crude,!the!vignette!about!paying!an!unfair!price!!on!eggs!gets!to!the!heart!of!highAfrequency!trading:!firms!with!no!stake!in!!the!success!or!failure!of!companies!use!superior!server!speed!and!!computer!code!(or!even!server!and!computer!location,!seriously)!to!!sniff!out!what!traders!plan!to!do!in!the!market!and!buy!or!dump!!stock!accordingly,!effectively!making!it!impossible!to!buy!or!sell!at!!the!true!market!price.!More!importantly,!the!traders!who!are!being!!gamed,!ordinary!people!putting!their!money!in!mutual!funds!and!other!!investing!mechanisms!are!losing!out.!The!highAfrequency!traders!gaming!!them!have!little!or!no!personal!investment!in!the!price!of!a!stock.!!Beyond!his!critique!of!the!current!state!of!equity!markets,!Lewis!asks!!the!central!question!behind!the!entire!story:!how!willing!are!we!as!!citizens,!investors,!and!employees!to!investigate!the!inner!workings!!of!the!institutions!central!to!our!lives?!Do!we!care!enough?!Or!do!we!!need!someone!else!to!tell!us!what's!happening?!For!bringing!this!story!and!these!questions!to!the!forefront,!Lewis!deserves!credit.!The!!ultimate!testament!would!not!just!be!reading!this!book,!but!to!start!!asking!and!following!up!on!those!queries!in!everyday!life.!! !
