INTRODUCTION
TheLanguageA:EnglishLiterature course,offeredatbothHigherandStandardLevels, isdesigned tomeet theneedsof studentsforwhomEnglish isnormally theirbest language,or thosewhocommunicate effectively in English. The study of literature isthemain focusof this course,which includesaworld literaturecomponent.
IBEnglishprovidestheopportunityforstudentstoexamine,discussandcomparetheideasandlanguageofawidevarietyofwritersfromdifferenttimesaswellasfromavarietyofculturesacrosstheglobe.
Aswell aspresenting ideas inwriting, students taking the coursewillbeexpected tocontributeand listensympathetically to ideas instimulatingclasssessionswherediscussion,debateandpresentationplayanessential role.During the course, students shoulddeveloptheir ideas,knowledgeandenjoymentof literary themes, conceptsand language.They shouldalsodevelop theability to examineand
express ideaswith confidence inavarietyof contexts. Students’achievementswillbeassessedthroughacombinationofwrittenandoralcourseworkaswellasbywrittenexamination.
COURSE DETAILS
Higher Level: Inaddition to the fiveworld literature texts, studentsstudyeighttextsembracingprose,poetryanddrama.TheHigherLevelcourse isbothstimulatingandenriching,but isalsouncompromisinglydemanding. Before considering entry, students should possess avoraciousappetite for literature, combinedwitha capacity forhardwork.
Standard Level: Inadditiontothefourworldliteraturetexts,studentswill study six texts embracingpoetry,proseanddrama.This course isdesigned fornon-specialists, andwhile studentswillpractice the sameskillsasthoseencounteredatHigherLevel,itwillbelessdemanding.

Part 3: (externally assessed) 50%SL-study of a group of three works from the prescribed book list, assessed by a 1 ½ hour written examinationessay.

Both levelsalso takea secondexaminationpaper; this is a 1 ½or2hourwrittencommentarybasedonanunseenpassage.

INTRODUCTION
TheLanguageA:ChineseLanguageandLiterature course,offeredatbothHigherandStandardLevelscombinesthestudyoflanguage,textsandculture.As21stcenturyglobalcitizensourstudentsneedameansofmaking senseof theworldaround them.This coursewillprovide theskillsneededtomakemeaningof, tocriticallyevaluate,andtobeeffectiveusersof,ourmodernandevolvinglanguageandmodesofcommunication.
Studentswillbechallengedwithabroadrangeof texts inavarietyofgenres; theywillbe lookingat languageand its connections toculture; the languageofmediaandmasscommunication;aswellascloseanalysisofliterarytextsfromarangeofgenres.
Afundamentalareaofskillsdevelopmentwillbeincriticalthinking-deconstructingimages,language,form,style,astheymovethroughapractical examinationof communicationandmeaningmaking.Thedevelopmentandrefinementofthefourprimarylanguageskillsof listening, speaking, readingandwritingarealso integral to theLanguageandLiteraturecourse.

Higher Level: Studentsstudyfouroptions,twoofwhichconcentrateonLanguageand twoonLiterature.TheLanguage sections includethe studyof language in cultural context aswell as languageandmass communication.For these sectionsof the course textswillbestudied fromavarietyof sources,genresandmediaandwillbestudied in relation to topics suchasgender, languageandpower,language and social relations, stereotypes, textual bias. For theLiterature components, three texts are studiedwithaparticularfocuson context anda further three texts areanalysed in the closecritical study section.TheseLiteraryoptions includeavarietyofprose,poetryanddramawithsomechosenfromtheprescribedlistofauthors,providedbytheIB,andsomefromaprescribedlistoftextsintranslation.
Standard Level: Students study four options, two ofwhichconcentrateonLanguage and twoonLiterature.TheLanguagesections remain the same as atHigherLevel. In theLiteraturecomponentsSLstudentsstudytwotextswithafocusoncontextsanda further two texts,both from theprescribed listof authors, for theclosecriticalstudy.

INTRODUCTION
AllLanguageBcoursesmeet theneedsofstudentswithsubstantialpreviousknowledgeof a second (or foreign) language inFrench,MandarinorSpanish.
The intention is to provide studentswith the linguistic skillsnecessary for further study in the language and topromote anunderstandingof thecultureof thecountrieswhere the language isspokenaswell as topromote theability to copewith the languagedemandsofday-to-daytransactionalandsocialcontacts.Thecourseshouldalsoprovideanefficienttoolforthestudyofothersubjects.
Syllabi atLanguageBHigherandStandardLevels are similar incontent,althoughstudyintheformerwillbemoreintensive,andtheproficiencylevelsachievedwillbehigher.
COURSE DETAILS
ThebasicskillsacquisitionforLanguageBcanbedividedintothreemainareas,andwillbecoveredthroughathematicapproach:
1.AcademicDiscourse - studying referenceand library sources,whichwill involvetakingpart inpracticalprojects,writingnotes,essaysandreports.
2. SocialLanguage -gaining information fromprintedmaterialssuchasworksof a literaryand factualnature:books, journals,instructions and news items. This will include handlinginformation fromnon-bookmedia, such as films and radio.Classroominteractionwillbeintheformofdiscussionanddebateonarangeofliterary,non-literaryandculturalthemes.
3.ExperiencingHowUsersofOtherLanguagesThink - the specificemphasishere isonunderstandingandappreciating thatpeoplefromothercultureswillhaveadifferentperspectivefromourownona rangeof areasof experienceand that language is amajorvehicle for conveying thosedifferences.Theexperiencegainedinacademicdiscourseand social interaction (asoutlinedabove)will contribute to thisunderstanding.However,more specificattentionwillbedirectedtowrittenworksofvariousgenres,totherelationshipof suchworks to the societyandculture inwhich itwasproducedandanappreciationofhowlanguagecontributestotheseinsights.

INTRODUCTION COURSE DETAILSIBTheatreArts leads students ina rigorous investigationof thenatureoftheaterfromthepagetothestage.Studentswillinvestigatebothtraditionalaswellasalternativeformsoftheatre,viewingthemculturallyaswellasstylistically,whileengaginginboththepracticaland the theoretical. Studentswill also studydrama from thepointofviewof thedirectorandwill investigatemethodsof turningaplayscript intoperformance.A theatreproduction - a collaborativeexerciseanimatingabroadspectrumoftalentsandskillsinwhichtheprinciplesandpracticesoftheatreareexploredbythestudents-isthehighpointoftheirpracticalandtheoreticalstudies.
StandardLevelwill consist of four compulsory parts.HigherLevel shall consistof five compulsorypartswith theadditionof anIndividualProject.
Part 1 Performance skills-ensemblework,mime,movement,vocaltechniques,genre,actingtechniquesandcharacterisation.
Part 2 World Theatre Studies - Studies froman internationalperspectiveofselectedtextsandtraditions.Studyindetailofatleasttwocontrastingpractices.
Part 3 Practical Play Analysis -Activeexplorationofextractsandcompleteplaytextsasplansforaction.
Part 4 Theatre Production-Apracticalstudyoftheprinciplesandpracticesoftheatreproduction,buildingonskillsdevelopedinotherareasofthecourse.Involvementinatleastoneproduction.
Part 5 Individual Project (Higher Level (HL) only) -Pupilspursueanindependentareaofinterest,enquiryorpassionthatmayhavearisenthroughoutthecourse.
