Quote of the week… ‘By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who

thinks he’s wrong’ - Charles Wadsworth

Active Schools… Hororata students competed at the Malvern Winter Tournament, held at Darfield and Kirwee on Thursday 15 August 2013. The weather turned out to be perfect given the time of the year, children had a great time and once again our kids did incredibly well. Congratulations to our Junior Soccer and Netball teams who achieved notable success in their sections. A special thanks to our volunteer coaches who helped prepare the kids for the tournament and helped out on the day i.e., Steve Purvis, Rachel Hood, Rodney Booth, Amanda Henriksen, Nigel Hadfield, Lucy Cookson and everyone else who helped out on the day. Without their support these events would simply not be as successful.

Academic Success… Students from Hororata Primary School won University of New South Wales awards for their academic achievement in the recent International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS). The following children achieved notable success: Science - Harry Smith (Credit), William Oakley (Distinction).

Camp Fundraiser… Congratulations to all the Year 4-6 students on their efforts to raise funds for our upcoming camp in Wellington, through our recent Mathethon. Children raised money in this event by seeking sponsorship for the number of timetables questions they could correctly answer within two minutes. Children achieved a range from 1 - 114 correct answers with an average of 84 in the Mathethon Challenge held on Friday 16 August 2013, surprising many parents and affirming to teachers that the extra effort invested in learning our Time Tables this year has really paid off.

We would appreciate all fundraised money returned to school within the next few weeks. Please note all booklets must be returned to attest for the collection of money on behalf of the school.

Haere mai... I would like to welcome Ayla and Jade Abraham (Kea) to our school. I am confident that your time here will be both enjoyable and rewarding. I would also like to welcome Mr Alan Faichnie to our school. Alan has been appointed to fill the Caretaker vacancy for the remainder of the year. Alan comes to us to after a successful career as an electrician and has already made a positive impression on our grounds.

Finally, at Hororata we work hard to equip our students with the skills to be successful leaners throughout life and to make wise choices about how they use their recreation time to promote health and happiness. We are committed to providing our children with experiences in a broad range of learning and recreational activities.

To give all our students the opportunity to learn to ski, we will be travelling to the Porters Heights Ski Area on Wednesday 18 September 2013. The event is being funded by the Hororata Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and will include all expenses associated with ski hire, lessons and passes.

In addition to the Whole School Winter Adventure Day, our school also offers families the opportunity to ski at Porter Heights at a discounted rate – 09.07.2013, 04.09.2013 (Ski form attached). It is important to note that this is optional for families and that the school remains open for all families that choose not to take part.

Thanks for supporting our school

Piwakawaka (Miss Raybould)

Hi everyone

Just a reminder that we visit the library on

Tuesdays. It would be great if as many people as possible

could take advantage of this fabulous resource. The children

know to bring their library book bag back to school on

Mondays so they have an extra day to remember if they forget.

We are looking forward to sharing the Greedy Cat story

with you on Friday. Let’s hope it’s a lovely sunny day on

Friday, too.

Regards. Julia

Kea (Miss Stewart)

Wow it is week 5 already!

This Friday we have a school celebration

assembly. Kea’s item requires a plain t-shirt in any one of the

following colours; yellow, orange, purple or green. We need to

have them at school by Thursday for a dress rehearsal. We

are back on number for maths. If you wish to have any extra

basic facts sheets just pop a note in your child’s notebook to

let me know. And lastly, for one of our recycling art projects

this term we require wire. This wire needs to be easily bent into

shapes by hand. If you have any that we could use it would be

greatly appreciated.

Regards. Megan

Tui (Mrs Foster)

Hello everyone

Another week has vanished; I can’t believe how quickly this

term is going.

We had an amazing week last week with Vicky Peacock in our

classroom. Everyone enjoyed themselves and best of all we

have produced some wonderful art work. I can’t wait to see

them displayed in the Darfield Art Gallery from the 13th

September onwards.

This week the children were excited to see Ms Cullen, not long

now until her baby is due.

Thanks. Jenni
