Piwakawaka (Yrs 0-2) Miss Raybould

Welcome to Term 4 Piwi is a lovely class of treasures. We are learning lots about our ourselves and this week we are writing about our pets. As part of Pet Day (Spring Festival) the children can enter a Pet Project however it is not a requirement. Just to let you know Piwakawaka do not do projects in class. Just a few reminders - We visit the library every Tuesday afternoon. The children can issue 2 books at a time to take home for the week. They can only take books home if they have a library book bag which is larger than their reading book bag so it can accommodate the larger library books. I tell the children to return it to school by Monday so they still have Tuesday if they forget. Also poetry books come home on Fridays and this is our reading homework for the weekend. I encourage the children to return these to school on Mondays so they don't get lost at home. On Monday we all took them out of our book bags and placed them into our chair bags.

Regards. Julia

Kakapo (Yrs 1-2) Ms Cullen Kia ora koutou katoa To the parents/caregivers that I have not had the opportunity to meet I am Amanda the new teacher in Kakapo and I am very excited about the busy term ahead. This is my short return to Hororata as I had the privilege to work with the year 5-6 in 2012 - 2013. I am originally from Ireland so if your kids come home with a bit of an accent I do apologise. We are also very lucky to have Lucy Cookson working with Kakapo on a Wednesday. This term: - Writing We will be working on narrative writing which will give the students an opportunity to express their personal voice. We will be writing fairy tales and telling their own story. On a Monday they will be writing about their exciting weekend at home. Reading I will continue the same reading programme Piwi and Kea used to keep some familiarity in the classroom. We will have new activities. Maths We will continue with measurement and number. On Friday we will be doing the 1K loop so if we could all have trainers on that would be great. News will be on Friday too this is when toys can be brought in and shared with the class. As beautiful summer is on the way can you please remember put sunscreen on before school begins. My door is always open if you have any questions. Ka kite ano Ms Cullen (Amanda)

Kea (Yrs 2-4) Miss Stewart

Hello all, In Kea we are learning about how essential water is to life and how lucky we are in New Zealand to be able to turn on a tap and get clean water. We are also going to be looking at the water cycle and what water is made of.

Ski day is next week. Be sure to name as much clothing as possible as skiing is hard work and many layers get discarded along the way.

Megan

Tui (Yrs 4-6) Mrs Foster

Hi Everyone, another busy term is well and truly under way. Firstly I would like to welcome Kate who started with us on Monday. Kate is a year 5 girl from Warkworth near Auckland. We are practicing for athletic sports which are coming up very soon, please ensure that your child has suitable footwear to wear during this time. Call in anytime especially if you have any questions. Jenni

Quote of the week… ‘The best inheritance a parent can give to his children is a few minutes of their time each day’ - M. Grundler

Welcome back to another very busy term at Hororata Primary School. Buckle in for an action packed ten weeks of Learning, laughter and tears.

Our Active Culture…

Run, Jump, Throw… In preparation for the upcoming Malvern Athletics series we have incorporated athletics into the school-wide fitness programme for the first few weeks of Term Four. The programme operating Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1240 – 1330hrs, sees students divided into age groups (as at 01.10.16) and rotating around a series of Run (Sprint/Relay), Jump (High/Long) and Throw (Discus/Shot) classes run by teachers.

As part of the Malvern Athletics series, all our learners will travel to Darfield High School on Monday 31 October 2016 to take part in the South Malvern Athletic Sports. The day involving students from Hororata, Greendale, Windwhistle and Kirwee schools will provide children from 5 -11 years of age with the opportunity to develop their athletic skills and compete with students from other neighbouring schools. More information will be sent out with next week’s newsletter. Our Malvern Squad to compete at the Malvern Twilight Athletics to be held on Thursday 17 November 2016, will be selected from athletes who succeed at the South Malvern event (Yrs 4-6 only).

Our Learning Culture…

Bursting at the seams… Over the past few terms our school roll has increased substantially. This is positive reflection of recent growth in the Hororata area and the quality of education our remarkable wee school provides.

On the flip side this growth places our three class structure under a great deal of pressure and despite the Board of Trustees best efforts to meet the needs of our students, with additional teacher aide support at all levels of the school, this unpredicted growth has seen our classes grow to a uncomfortable level.

In mind of our roll growth across all levels of the school, the Ministry of Education has granted us an additional teacher for the remainder of the year. This has seen the establishment of ‘Kakapo’ an additional full-time junior classroom from day one of Term Four.

Welcome to Amanda Cullen (4 days) and Lucy Cookson (1 day) our new teaching team in Kakapo (Yrs 1-2). Both Amanda and Lucy have taught at our school previously and bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience. I am confident that their time in the classroom, staffroom and playground, will be hugely beneficial to our students, staff and school.

Sunsmart Schools… School Hats have been issued to each child at the beginning of the term and are a compulsory part of our uniform. All hats have been individually named, should not be shared and remain at school.

During the summer months all children will sit in a shaded area for lunch.

Children will wear hats in the playground, on sports days, school outings and at the teachers’ discretion during out of classroom activities

The school operates a ‘NO HAT, NO PLAY’ policy. If a child loses or misplaces their hat, they will be directed to play in a shaded area .

Haere mai... I would like to welcome Ayden Hopkins, Lance Araguas, Lilly Oliver-Albon, Billy Williamson (Piwakawaka) and Kate Innes (Tui) to our school. I am confident that your time at Hororata will be rewarding.

Finally, as a response to feedback received from families last year in the School Climate Survey re the usefulness of school website and means of communication between home and school, we have introduced a new mobile telephone app, Parent Teacher Calendar (PTC). The PTC App is a great alternative to web calendars and paper notices, using today's technology to reach out to the school community and is totally free. The PTC App enables users to view the school’s online calendar, report absences via Absentee Messaging and to access School Contacts, School Information, School Map and the latest Newsletters. The App also has an Instant Notification feature meaning that we can reach out to the school community within minutes via a notification directly to their phones in the event of emergencies or changes of plans here at school.

The PTC App can be downloaded onto your phone quickly and easily via the iTunes and Android App store. More information is available at http://www.parentteachercalendar.co.nz/

Thanks for supporting our school
