I send you warm and heartfelt greetings as we welcome in another year together! the thoughtfulness,

kindness, and generosity shared by our alumni, friends, and family are humbling to say the least. thanks

to you, we are able to continue to do the great work that we do each day here at the Academy. Because

of you, we look to the future with hope and excitement. the future of Saint Bede Abbey & Academy are

bright with promise!

In my daily reflections, I came across this quote about a new year and felt it was most appropriate:

“The most sacred place dwells within our heart, where dreams are born and secrets sleep, a mystical

refuge of darkness and light, fear and conquest, adventure and discovery, challenge and transformation.

Our heart speaks for our soul every moment while we are alive. Listen... as the whispering beat repeats:

be...gin, be...gin, be...gin. It’s really that simple. Just begin.”

Royce Addington

And so, let us begin 2013. . .tOGEtHEr!

From the Heart,

donna

Memorials

during the last five weeks we have celebrated one holiday after another. the celebrations have caused me to think about blessings, thanksgiving, and a vision for the future. christmas is a time when we give thanks to God for the wondrous gift of his Son who was sent into the world out of love to die for us and so save us. As disciples of Jesus we are also called to be his presence to one another, and so to gift one another. I have come to understand that without the gifts of so many people, Saint Bede as we know it could not exist. there is first of all the gift of the monks who are animated by a deep love of God and the need to share that good news with all who are part of Saint Bede or who visit us. the monks’ commitment to prayer and living the rule of Saint Benedict animates all we do. We are blessed by a wonderful group of dedicated administrators and staff who provide support and leadership for Saint Bede. All of them are dedicated to our good work and do so much above and beyond the call of duty. Of course, there are also the teachers who daily enter the classroom trying to inculcate a love of learning, and a sense of the mission that all of us have been given by christ. then there are the numerous friends and benefactors who generously support us. together we have been given all we need to make Saint Bede Abbey and Academy a place where people can experience God’s love and mercy, and hopefully embrace the call to bring that love and mercy to others.

Each of us needs to simply do our part. How blessed we are! counting our blessings should fill us to a deep spirit of thanksgiving, but how easy it would be to take our blessings for granted. Saint Paul writes that “We should always give thanks!” Whenever Jeannie puts a new pile of thank you letters on my desk, I let out a moan and interiorly say, “Not again!” But my frustration is not so much with saying thanks; it is more trying to understand how a brief note can convey our sense of gratitude for what people do for us. Your giving not only helps us pay the bills, it also reinforces the importance of our work at Saint Bede. And so I again thank all of you, from the largest to the smallest benefactor, for you are each doing your part and enabling us to continue to serve young people in our area, as well as those who visit the monastery to pray with us and seek refreshment for mind, body and spirit. Happy New Year! We begin another year full of hope and enthusiasm, with confidence that the blessings of the past are only a hint of the goodness God has in store for us in the future. the monastery has installed a new roof on the main area of the Abbey church. the completion of the room is being delayed by the need to let the new roof cure before it is completed. In April we will modernize our elevator which has not received any major overhaul since it was installed about 50 years ago. It has become unreliable in recent years and we hope the modernization process will improve its

efficiency and reliability. We continue to explore numerous other projects that are needed such as new windows for the Abbey and part of the Abbey church, repaving our roads, a new roof for the Abbey itself and so much more. Fr. Michael has bravely agreed to become our new webmaster for the Abbey with a goal of having the new site on-line in the early spring. Our previous site was woefully inadequate. the new site will have many features you will enjoy and will help keep you informed about what is happening here. We continue to work toward an Assisted Living and Memory care facility, as well as independent Senior Living on our property. By the time you receive this issue of the Bedan record there may be some major new developments appearing in the news. We look forward to this new mission of service to our many friends who make up the Saint Bede family. I have learned much from our past failure in attempting to develop these facilities and feel confident that I am now working with people who can make our dreams become a reality. donna and I will be making a number of trips this year to visit with our alumni and friends. I look forward to sharing our hopes and dreams with you. Almost all I have written pertains to the Abbey; much more will be happening in the Academy. Stay posted. And to all of you I say “thank You” for blessing us and moving with us into a future with many possibilities and great hope. May you, your families and friends experience a truly blessed New Year!

take one step inside a classroom at Saint Bede Academy and before class begins you will hear a very special blessing being said “May the rule of Saint Benedict be our guide” followed by “May the Spirit of Saint Bede stay with us forever.” this is the blessing can be heard throughout the school. Saint

Bede Academy is a catholic high school where following the Benedictine tradition is an everyday way of life. this tradition is much more than reciting a few lines to a blessing, or taking a religion class each year. Here, at the Academy, it’s about taking the Benedictine rule to another level, and Father ronald Margherio makes it his mission to find and create ways to make this happen. Saint Bede Academy has been providing quality education since 1890 with a goal to prepare students not only for college, but for life as well. the Academy is dedicated to developing well-rounded students. By following the core values of faith, character, academic excellence, community, stewardship, and justice the students of Saint Bede will strengthen their relationship with God, and be more prepared to contribute to the world around them. Father ronald has turned the idea of “christian Formation” into something every student wants to be a part of. He creates an atmosphere in which all walks of life; young, old, catholic, non-catholic, current student, future student, and past student learn to incorporate a christian lifestyle into their own life. Father ronald’s objective is to influence each member of the Saint Bede family through his involvement with monthly prayer service & Masses, reconciliation services, clubs such as Venturing, Interact and Journey, Lectio, NEt days, and his ever famous Mystery trip. Additionally, the students & staff of Saint Bede become involved in service projects and fundraising

Memorials efforts to help others: local food & toy drives, Project Santa, and Lenten class collections. Not only is Father ronald a leader in our community of faith but his smile can be seen from down the hallway, and he’s quick with a funny joke or an encouraging word. quite clearly he enjoys his work and it shows! Father ronald’s reach is far greater than the grounds of Saint Bede. He is involved in “tEc” weekends (teens Encounter christ), Senior retreats, Juniors day of recollection, Youth rally and Leadership days in Peoria, IL and his ever popular Mystery trip. to begin each school year Father ronald chooses a theme that will be taught, followed and encouraged throughout the entire year. He chooses this theme from the virtues of the “Rule of Saint Benedict.” this year the theme is “hospitality” with the idea of fully welcoming and helping all those in need, in our lives, and most importantly, welcoming God into our hearts. Homecoming week is an important lesson in hospitality. Homecoming is that very special time at the Academy because it is about the “coming home” of our alumni, family, and friends. traditionally class reunions are held during homecoming weekend. this gives our alumni the opportunity not only to visit with their classmates, but with other members of the Saint Bede

family as well. It also gives our present students the opportunity to meet and greet those who have gone before them and to know that in a few short years they will be joining the prestigious group known as Saint Bede Alumni! Since Saint Benedict says that all good works begin with prayer, we always have a prayer service during spirit week. the idea of “the spirit of Saint Bede” is to be celebrated, and we do so, with skits and prayers during our prayer service.

Another exciting weekend Father ronald takes part in is “tEc,” short for teens Encounter christ. this weekend is about our high school kids finding ways to get closer to christ. these kids take a weekend away from everything else that is going on in the world around them, and work together and as individuals, to put the Lord first. Yet another time-honored tradition for Father ronald is to take a group of 12 students (6 boys and 6 girls) to a convent or monastery. In the past they have visited the Benedictine sisters in rock Island, IL and in Beech Grove, IN; the dominicans in Springfield, IL and the BVM sisters in dubuque, IA. they usually arrive late on Friday afternoon and leave on Sunday after lunch. these weekends allow the students to experience female religious vocation. Since there are no nuns at Saint Bede, it is a true learning experience for all. While with the sisters, each student has a sister to accompany them to prayers and meals. Usually, a few of the sisters speak to the students about their vocation and what is particular to their order or group. When possible, on Saturday, they try to perform some sort of service assignment together. this assignment can be for the sisters or for some other group. But it’s never all work and no play! A bit of fun is always added into the schedule, and the group takes full advantage of what is offered in

the areas that they visit. this spring Father ronald hopes to be able to visit Saint Louis again. Finally, the Saint Bede Mystery trip! For three years now this trip has been offered to Senior’s at the Academy. Every year Father ronald finds a way to get a group of students excited about an ‘unknown’ journey. 8 students are invited: 4 girls and 4 boys. they do not know who else is being invited to participate and they are not told until all 8 have accepted the invitation. Father ronald chooses students he believes will benefit from such an ‘out-of-the-box’ experience. the trip runs from thursday through Monday evening. From the very moment they yes, these students have no idea where they are going or what they will be doing for the entire 5 days of the trip. At the beginning of every day this prayer is spoken:

T R U S T

My Lord God,I have no idea where I am going

I do not see the road ahead of me.I cannot know for certain

where it will end.Nor do I really know myself,

And the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean

that I am actually doing so.But I believe that the desire to please

you does in fact please you.And I hope that I have that desire

in all that I am doing. And I know that if I do this,

you will lead me by the right roadthough I may know nothing about it.

Therefore I will trust you alwaysthough I may seem to be lost

and in the shadow of death, I willnot fear, for you are ever with me

and you will never leave meto face my perils alone.

this year the mystery trip began on All Saints day, thursday, November 1, 2012. the first stop was the chapparel

café in Shelbyville, IN. From there, the group moved on to covington, KY where they stayed the night with Benedictine sisters. the next day, mass was held in the morning and they continued their journey to Knoxville, tN. they made their way through the Smoky Mountains and on to Belmont, Nc. this evening they stayed at the Belmont Abbey and college. In the morning, the kids visited King’s Mountain, a major battle sight in the revolutionary War, located in South carolina. the next day it was time to start heading north, towards Ashville, Nc

where the group visited the Biltmore Estate, the largest home in America built by the one and only Vanderbilt family. their journey continued to Nashville, where they enjoyed good ol’ tennessee barbeque for dinner. the following morning, they started their long trip home. One stop on the way was Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace in Hodgenville, KY. then lunch in Sellersburg, IN with the final stop at an outlet mall near Indianapolis before heading back to Saint Bede. After arriving home around 8:15pm, all were tired but had a lot of memorable experiences from the last 5 days. the entire trip is a true metaphor about FAItH and trUSt: trusting Father ronald, trusting one another, and most of all trusting God. the students take this leap of faith, and are able to learn life-long lessons from the experience. they are also assigned a prayer partner at the beginning of the trip and they do not find out who their partner is until the last day of the trip. When they get home they are to write to the parents of their prayer partner telling them what they feel their son/daughter gained from the experience and also, what they themselves gained. Saint Bede Academy is a catholic college preparatory high school that not only offers education excellence but provides a foundation for christian way of life built in and around the rule of Saint Benedict. the mission of Saint Bede is “the christ-centered development of the whole person with compassion and integrity.” there is simply no other institution that can compare with the Academy’s academics and foundation of christian values combined. those that have walked through the hallways will agree, “the Spirit of Saint Bede” does stay with you forever!

Our beloved Father Kevin Gorman died on Sunday, November 25, 2012 in Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home, Lacon, IL, where he had been a resident for almost three years, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Father Kevin was born at Monee, IL, on January 3, 1926. He was a bright student and, after six years at a local country school, he completed the seventh and eighth grades in a single year at Our Lady Academy in Manteno, IL, and then, a few months before his thirteenth birthday, he followed his older brother Monroe to Saint Bede Academy in the fall of 1938. Here, after completing four years of high school and two of college with an excellent academic record, he applied for entry into the monastic community in 1944. He made his novitiate at Saint John’s Abbey, collegeville, MN, and it was there that he made his profession for Saint Bede on June 14, 1945. during the next two years he completed his college studies at Saint Benedict’s college in Atchison, KS, where he received a BA in philosophy and mathematics in 1947.

there followed four years of study in our own school of theology, together with some teaching in our academy, in preparation for his ordination to the priesthood on May 13, 1951. After his ordination Father Kevin was assigned to further study in an agriculture program at the University of Illinois in champaign, where he earned both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in agricultural economy. thus

prepared, he taught courses in agriculture during most of the next decade in our college, which had become a junior college after World War II. After the agriculture program was phased out, he earned a second master’s degree in biology at the University of Notre dame in 1961-62, and subsequently taught biology at Saint Bede Academy for the next twenty years, as well as serving as a prefect and in various other capacities in our school.

Father Kevin was well known to many people throughout this area because of his long-standing connection with the student athletic program at Saint Bede Academy. this had begun already during his student days, when he served as manager of varsity teams, and later, as a member of the faculty, he served as athletic director from 1958 to 1984. Many are the stories about his work as Athletic director, and especially

his service as Bus driver for athletic teams. An entirely new phase in his life began in 1984, when he was assigned as pastor of Saint Joseph Parish in Peru, where he ministered for the next ten years. during this time he presided over the redecoration of the church and the construction of the new “Halle,” which now serves as the parish hall and also as the gymnasium for Peru catholic School. In 1994 he became pastor of Holy trinity Parish, cherry, and of Saint Patrick’s Parish, Arlington, where he served until his retirement in 2008. during the long period in which he was engaged in pastoral ministry, he also served for some time on the presbyteral council of the diocese of Peoria

and as a member of the bishop’s college of consultors. In 2011 he observed the 60th anniversary of his ordination at Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home in Lacon, where he had become a patient in January of 2009, after he had spent some six months in retirement at Saint Bede. during his stay of almost three years at Saint Joseph’s, he was for some time able to return to the abbey on special occasions, but his ability to communicate gradually decreased as his state of health declined.

Father Dominic

A “Breadhead” is a dedicated baker, someone who bakes often, who thinks and dreams about bread and is not afraid to experiment. In this new book by “the Bread Monk” of public television fame, you’ll learn more than just basic techniques—you’ll find out why yeast behaves the way it does, how to substitute different flours in a recipe, and how to take a simple dough and make it extraordinary for a special occasion. Starting with tools of the trade (you need less than you think), Father dom takes you through the baby steps of baking all the way to beautiful loaves that will amaze and delight your family and friends. Special attention is paid to kneading—a stumbling block for many beginning bakers—and simple shaping techniques that can make your loaves look terrific. You’ll find braided loaves, flatbreads, pretzels, dinner rolls that look like roses, butterfly-shaped breakfast treats, and a muffin recipe that uses a secret ingredient: melted ice cream! And all in Father dom’s funny and friendly style of instruction, with helpful photos.

Over Christmas break I shot 28 one minute instructional videos for the Home Baking Association. These were shot in the girls’ boarding house kitchen. Academy senior Brandon Raineri was my kitchen assistant. These videos will also be posted on their own YouTube channel and on my website www.breadmonk.com.

where the group visited the Biltmore Estate, the largest home in America built by the one and only Vanderbilt family. their journey continued to Nashville, where they enjoyed good ol’ tennessee barbeque for dinner. the following morning, they started their long trip home.

In 2011 he observed the 60th anniversary of his ordination at Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home in Lacon, where he had become a patient in January of 2009, after he had spent some six months in retirement at Saint Bede. during his stay of almost three years at Saint Joseph’s, he was for some time able to return to the abbey on special occasions, but his ability to communicate gradually decreased as his state of health declined.

the areas that they visit. this spring Father ronald hopes to be able to visit Saint Louis again.

A bit of fun is always added into the schedule, and the group takes full advantage of what is offered in

take one step inside a classroom at Saint Bede Academy and before class begins you will hear a very special blessing being said “May the rule of Saint Benedict be our guide” followed by “May the Spirit of Saint Bede stay with us forever.” this is the blessing can be heard throughout the school.

Additionally, the students & staff of Saint Bede become involved in service projects and fundraising

during the last five weeks we have celebrated one holiday after another. the celebrations have caused me to think about blessings, thanksgiving, and a vision for the future. christmas is a time when we give thanks to God for the wondrous gift of his Son who was sent into the world out of love to die for us and so save us.

And so, let us begin 2013. . .tOGEtHEr!
