Brothers and Sisters,  

In  the Acts  of  the Apostles,  chapter  6 

verses 1‐7, we read about the founda‐

on  of  what  we  know  today  as  the 

diaconate ministry. At the United States  

Conference  of  Catholic  Bishops’  website,  it  lists  various 

ques ons and answers about deacons. In the answer to the 

ques on, who is a deacon, it says the following:   

“A deacon is an ordained minister of the Catholic

Church. There are three groups, or "orders,"

of ordained ministers in the Church: bishops,

presbyters and deacons. Deacons are ordained

as a sacramental sign to the Church and to the

world of Christ, who came ‘to serve and not to

be served.’ The en re Church is called by Christ to

serve, and the deacon, in virtue of his sacramental

ordina on and through his various ministries, is to

be a servant in a servant‐Church.”  

Over  the  years  at  our  parish,  we  have  been  blessed  with 

great deacons to serve the spiritual needs of our community. 

Over  the  last month, our parish has  sadly  said goodbye  to 

two  deacons  and  their  wives.  Deacon  Steve  Serembe  and 

his wife, Cathy, recently  le  as Deacon Steve began a new 

phase of  life with  re rement. Deacon Jesse Robles and his 

wife, Monica, shared with us that they were moving to Utah 

to be  closer  to  their  son and grandchildren. While Deacon 

Antonio Mejico and his wife, Emma, are s ll connected with 

our parish especially through the renewal retreat experience, 

Deacon Antonio’s primary assignment as a deacon is serving 

as a chaplain at local jails and juvenile facilities. While Deacon 

Mike Bellinder and his wife, Marilyn, are still parishioners of 

Holy Name, Deacon Mike’s primary assignment as a deacon is 

serving the parish of St. Anthony in San Bernardino. Deacon 

Eddie  Khader  and  his  wife,  Dina,  still  serve  in  our  parish 

community, but they primarily serve the needs of our Arabic 

speaking community. We are also blessed to have the pres‐

ence of our  re red deacon, Deacon Richard Cover  and his 

wife, Francesca. With all the recent changes, it became ap‐

parent there was need for a new deacon to serve our parish 

community. I asked Bishop Barnes if there would be such a 

deacon to serve at the Holy Name of Jesus. For a  me it did 

not look like it would be possible this summer for us to re‐

ceive a new deacon, but gratefully just this past week, I was 

informed  that  a new deacon would  indeed be assigned  to 

our parish. His name is Deacon Eric Vilchis.  

That’s right, I will no longer be the only member of the clergy 

named Erik. A er all,  isn’t  two be er  than one!   Fun fact:

we do spell our names differently. I am Erik with a K and

Deacon Eric is with a C. Not only are we blessed to receive 

Deacon Eric we also receive the tremendous gi  of his wife, 

Rosalie. Deacon Eric and Rosalie went through the diaconate 

forma on  program  with  the  Diocese  beginning  in  2002. 

Deacon Eric was ordained on December 16, 2006. They have 

served at St. Catherine of Siena in Rialto and most recently 

at  Our  Lady  of  Hope  in  San  Bernardino.  Deacon  Eric  and 

Rosalie have many gi s to share and we will be blessed to 

discover them over  me. I am confident our parish commu‐

nity will help them to feel at home. Feel free to send Dea‐

con Eric and Rosalie Vilchis a card of welcome to our parish 

office. You can read more about Deacon Eric and Rosalie in 

this bulle n. Let us shower them with joy and love.  

If there are any men in the parish who feel a calling to the 

diaconate ministry in our Diocese, I encourage you to come 

by  and  speak  with me.  You  and  your  wife  can  contribute 

much to the life of the Church. Be not afraid.

Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:  

En los Hechos de los Apóstoles, capítulo 

6 versículos 1‐7, leemos sobre la funda‐

ción de lo que ahora conocemos como 

el ministerio del diaconado. En el sitio 

web de  la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de  los Estados 

Unidos  se  enumeran  varias  preguntas  y  respuestas  sobre 

los  diáconos.  En  la  respuesta  a  la  pregunta,  quién  es  el 

diácono, aparece lo siguiente:   

“un diácono es un ministro ordenado de la Iglesia

Católica”. Hay tres grupos u “órdenes” de ministros

ordenados en la Iglesia: obispos, presbíteros y

diáconos. Los diáconos son ordenados como un

signo sacramental para la Iglesia y para mundo

de Cristo, que vino ‘a servir y no a ser servido’.

Cristo llama a la Iglesia entera a servir, y el diácono,

en virtud de su ordenación sacramental y en sus

diversos ministerios, debe ser un servidor en una

Iglesia servidora”.  

Por años en nuestra parroquia, hemos sido bendecidos con 

excelentes diáconos para servir las necesidades espirituales 

de nuestra comunidad. Este mes pasado, nuestra parroquia 

lamentablemente dijo adiós a dos diáconos y  sus esposas. 

El  diácono  Steve  Serembe  y  su  esposa,  Cathy,  se  fueron 

recientemente cuando el diácono Steve comenzó una nueva 

etapa de la vida con la jubilación. El diácono Jesse Robles y 

su  esposa,  Mónica,  compar eron  con  nosotros  que  se 

mudarían a Utah para estar más cerca de su hijo y sus nie‐

tos. Aunque el diácono Antonio Mejico y su esposa, Emma, 

siguen vinculados a nuestra parroquia, especialmente a través 

de  la  experiencia  del  re ro  de  renovación,  la  asignación 

principal del diácono Antonio, como diácono, es servir como 

capellán en  las  cárceles  locales  y  los  centros de detención 

juvenil. El diácono Mike y sus esposa, Marilyn,  somos par‐

servir en el Santo Nombre de Jesús. Por un  empo parecía 

que no nos sería posible recibir un nuevo diácono este verano, 

pero  afortunadamente,  justo  la  semana pasada, me  infor‐

maron que se asignaría a un nuevo diácono a nuestra par‐

roquia. El diácono se llama Eric Vilchis. 

 

Así es, ya no seré el único clérigo de nombre Erik aquí en la 

parroquia.  Después  de  todo,  ¡no  es  mejor  dos  que  uno! 

Dato curioso: nuestros nombres se escriben diferente. Yo

soy Erik con K y el diácono es Eric con C. No sólo recibimos la 

bendición  del  diácono  Eric,  sino  que  también  recibimos  el 

tremendo  regalo  de  su  esposa,  Rosalie.  El  diácono  Eric  y 

Rosalie  iniciaron  el  programa  de  formación  del  diaconado 

con la diócesis en 2002. El diácono Eric recibió la ordenación 

el 16 de diciembre de 2006. Han servido en Santa Catalina 

de Siena en Rialto y recientemente en Nuestra Señora de la 

Esperanza  en  San  Bernardino.  El  diácono  Eric  y  Rosalie 

enen muchos  dones  que  compar r  y  será  una  bendición

Making Lemonade from Lemons — Haz Limonada de Limones

Dear Holy Name of Jesus Parishioners,  

We received a warm welcome from you last Sunday when Fr. Erik blessed us at the 10:00am 

Mass.  Thank you for your kind gree ngs in person and on Facebook! We  look  forward  to 

ge ng to know you in the coming months. Here is a li le informa on about us:  

Rosalie and I met in 1979 in our freshman year at the University of La Verne. There was only 

one seat le  in psychology class – and, Rosalie had to sit next to me. Full disclosure:  Eric was 

pestering Rosalie that first day they met in class – and he has never stopped pestering her!  

After class the next week, I asked her out and we had our first date. That night, we found out 

that we could not have been more different from one another. For example: Rosalie liked Disco; 

Eric liked Rock and Roll. She was a Catholic and he was a Bap st. She was a Democrat; he was a Republican. She liked Crest tooth‐

paste and he liked Colgate! S ll, by the end of the evening, I asked Rosalie to marry me. Rosalie laughed it off, but I was serious.  

We married in February of 1982, almost three years to the date of our first date. In 1985, we had our first child, Aurora; and, in 

1987, we moved into our home in Rialto. We have been blessed with our daughter and two sons, Elias and Eric; and, on July 10, 

2020, we welcomed our fourth grandchild, Luna.   

A er our son, Elias, was bap zed at St. Catherine of Siena in Rialto, Rosalie began serving as part of the Bap sm Ministry Team 

and singing in the choir. Eventually, I joined the choir and played guitar; and, together, we began serving in the marriage sponsor 

couple program. We have served together in ministry for over 20 years.   

It was during this time Eric was told, “You should consider becoming a Deacon.” Eric’s response was, “Don’t you have to be Catholic 

to be a Deacon?” This and with support from Rosalie and the community at St. Catherine’s led me to decide that I wanted to be 

100% a part of this community. I a ended the RCIA program and was confirmed in April of 1990.   

Rosalie and I a ended the Straling Leadership Ins tute and 

later  became  facilitators.  A er  a  few  years,  we  decided  it 

was  me  to  seriously  discern  if  God  was  calling  us  to  the 

diaconate. We began diaconate forma on in 2002 and I was 

ordained on December 16, 2006. Since ordina on, we have 

served at St Catherine’s and at Our Lady of Hope in San Ber‐

nardino in various ministries like Renewal Retreat Weekends, 

serving as Confirmation catechists, and teaching PMFP, CMFP 

and diocesan cer fica on programs. Rosalie also  serves on 

the  diocesan  liturgy  board,  and  is  the  Religious  Educa on 

Coordinator at St Catherine’s. (She was also a teacher at St 

Catherine’s School.) As a deacon,  I have assisted at English 

and Spanish Masses, and have presided at baptisms, funerals, 

weddings, and quinceañeras.  In addi on to ministry,  I have 

worked  in  the  local  news  industry  for  decades  as  a  photo‐

journalist  and as  an editor  in  various  roles. Currently,  I  am 

the Photo Editor for The Press‐Enterprise, The Redlands Daily 

Facts, The Sun and the Inland Valley Daily Bulle n.

SACRED HEART ACADEMY FIRST COMMUNICANTS

6 After  the miracle  of  Jesus walking  on water,  the  disciples 

exclaimed, “Truly, you are the Son of God” (Matthew 14:33). 

Most Christians will probably never experience such a dra‐

matic  miracle.  Like  Elijah,  we  await  the  manifestation  of 

God  in  other moments.  Perhaps  the biggest  challenge  for 

the  believer  is  to  be  constantly  attuned  to  the  possible 

presence  of  God  in  the  everyday  events  of  life.  This  is  a 

stance  that  takes  some  people  years  to  develop.  Others 

seem  to  find  the  Lord  easily  in  the  simple  things. As the

week unfolds, let us look for the presence of God in the

little things around us. Perhaps, like Elijah, we will be sur‐

prised at what we find. And, like the disciples, we can add

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN)

(1891‐1942) August 9

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, 

“let us go for our people!”  

These were Edith Stein’s  last words as the Nazis, enraged at 

the Dutch bishops’ condemnation of their genocide, took into 

custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but 

non‐prac cing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to 

a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and 

author  and, finally,  to  the Autobiography of  Saint  Teresa of 

Ávila, which  she  read  in  one  si ng,  then  declared,  “That is

the Truth!”  Bap zed  on  January  1,  1922,  observed  then  as 

the  feast  of  Jesus’  ini a on  into  the  covenant  of  Abraham, 

and confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presenta on 

in  the  Temple,  Edith  entered  the  cloistered  Carmelites  in  

Cologne. She later transferred to a convent in Holland when 

she realized that, because of the Nazi persecu on of the Jews 

in Germany, her presence could imperil the safety of the other 

nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter

Queridos feligreses del Santo Nombre de Jesús:  

El domingo pasado cuando el padre Erik nos bendijo en  la Misa de  las 10:00 am, ustedes nos 

dieron una calurosa bienvenida.  ¡Gracias por sus amables saludos en persona y en Facebook!

Esperamos con expecta va  llegar a conocerlos en  los próximos meses. Aquí  les ofrecemos un 

poco de información sobre nosotros:  

Rosalie y yo nos conocimos en 1979 cuando cursábamos nuestro primer año en la Universidad 

de La Verne. Sólo quedaba un asiento en la clase de psicología, y Rosalie tuvo que sentarse a mi 

lado. Revelación completa: Eric estaba molestando a Rosalie el primer día que se conocieron en 

clase, ¡y nunca ha dejado de molestarla!  

Después de clase la semana siguiente, la invité a salir y salimos por primera vez. Esa noche, descubrimos que no podríamos haber 

sido más diferentes el uno del otro. Por ejemplo: a Rosalie  le gustaba  la música disco; a Eric  le gustaba el  rock and roll. Ella era 

católica y él era bau sta. Ella era demócrata; él era republicano. ¡A ella le gustaba la pasta de dientes Crest y a él le gustaba Col‐

gate! Aun así, al final de la noche, le pedí a Rosalie que se casara conmigo. Rosalie se rio, pero yo hablaba en serio.  

Nos casamos en febrero de 1982, casi  tres años después de que salimos por primera vez. En 1985 nació nuestro primer retoño, 

nuestra hija Aurora; y, en 1987, nos mudamos a nuestra casa en Rialto. Dios nos bendijo con una hija y dos hijos, Elías y Eric; y,       

el 10 de julio de 2020, fuimos abuelos por cuarta vez con el nacimiento de nuestra nieta Luna.   

Después del bau smo de nuestro hijo Elías en Santa Catalina de Siena en Rialto, Rosalie comenzó a servir como parte del Equipo 

del Ministerio de Bau smos y a cantar en el coro. Con el  empo, me uní al coro y toqué la guitarra; y, juntos, comenzamos a servir 

en el programa de parejas madrinas de matrimonios. Hemos servido juntos en ministerio por más de 20 años.  

Fue en ese  empo que le dijeron a Eric: "Deberías considerar ser diácono". La respuesta de Eric fue: "¿No  enes que ser católico 

para ser diácono?" Esto y el apoyo de Rosalie y la comunidad de Santa Catalina me llevaron a decidir que quería ser 100% parte    

de esta comunidad. Asis  al programa de RICA y recibí la confirmación en abril de 1990.  

Rosalie y yo asis mos al Straling Leadership Ins tute y luego fuimos facilitadores. Después de unos años, decidimos que era hora 

de discernir seriamente si Dios nos estaba llamando al diaconado. Comenzamos la formación para el diaconado en 2002 y Eric reci‐

bió  la ordenación el 16 de diciembre de 2006. Desde su ordenación, hemos servido en Santa Catalina y en Nuestra Señora de  la 

Esperanza en San Bernardino en varios ministerios como los Re ro de Renovación Parroquial, catequistas de confirmación y ense‐

ñando PMFP, CMFP y programas de cer ficación diocesana. Rosalie también es miembro de la junta de diocesana de liturgia, y es 

coordinadora  de  educación  religiosa  en  Santa  Catalina.  (También  fue maestra  en  la  escuela  de  Santa  Catalina).  Como  diácono, 

también he ayudado en Misas en inglés y español, y he presidido bau smos, funerales, bodas y quinceañeras. Además del minis‐

terio, he trabajado en la industria local de no cieros por décadas como reportero gráfico y editor en varias funciones. Actualmente, 

soy editor de fotogra a para The Press‐Enterprise, The Redlands Daily Facts, The Sun y el Inland Valley Daily Bulle n.  

Rosalie y yo esperamos con an cipación conocer a todos aquí en el Santo Nombre de Jesús y servir a Cristo junto con ustedes.

Una Carta del Diácono Eric y Rosalie Vilchis

Después del milagro en que Jesús camina sobre el agua, los discípulos  exclaman:  “Verdaderamente, tú eres el Hijo de Dios” (Mateo 14:33). Es probable que  la mayoría de  los cris‐anos  nunca  vivan  un  milagro  tan  dramá co.  Igual  que 

Elías, esperamos la manifestación de Dios en otros momen‐tos. Tal vez el más grande reto para el creyente es estar en constante sintonía con la presencia de Dios en los sucesos de la vida diaria. Es una postura que toma años desarrollar. Otros parecen encontrar al Señor con facilidad en las cosas simples. A medida que transcurre la semana, busquemos la presencia de Dios en las pequeñas cosas que nos rodean. Quizás, como a Elías, nos sorprenderá lo que encontremos. Y,  como  los  discípulos,  podemos  agregar  la  confesión: “Verdaderamente, tú eres el Hijo de Dios”. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SANTA TERESA BENEDICTA DE LA CRUZ (1891‐1942)

Edith  Stein  nació  y  creció  en  una  familia  judía muy  piadosa. Siempre fue muy inteligente y a  los 13 años renunció a Dios, declarándose atea. A los 23 años obtuvo un doctorado en filo‐so a y, tras el tes monio de la viuda de quien fuera su maes‐tro, leyó en una sola noche la vida de Santa Teresa de Ávila y ahí encontró  la verdad. Abrazó  la fe cris ana y se hizo bau ‐zar, cosa que causó mucho dolor a su madre. Posteriormente, más dolor causó cuando les dijo que se haría monja carmelita, como Teresa. Ahí brilló por  su pensamiento filosófico y  tam‐bién  por  su  capacidad  de  enseñar.  Como  religiosa  adoptó  el nombre Benedicta de  la Cruz (bendecida de  la cruz), nombre que marcaría su vida de sacrificio. Fue trasladada a Holanda, pero ahí, en 1942 llegó la Gestapo (policía secreta alemana) y la  arrestaron por  ser  judía.  Junto  con otros hermanos y her‐manas, la enviaron en un tren hasta Auschwitz, un campo de concentración que se encuentra en Polonia, ahí, murió valien‐temente en la cámara de gas. Fue canonizada en 1998. —Miguel Arias, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
