Happy July 4th everyone! Wishing everyone a great holiday celebrating our Independence Day. It’s the start of summer so enjoy your family and the beautiful weather outside. Our fam-ily spends July 4th at Yosemite National Park every year. Art classes are available where we sit in the meadow and do Plein Air painting. It’s a wonderful experience putting the landscape you are looking at on a blank canvas. No pattern, no colors prechosen. It definitely puts my art skills to the test, for sure.

We had another great ZOOM class in June. Onya worked her magic teaching us how to paint flowers and leaves using vari-ous strokes in a step by step process. It was her first-time teaching over the computer and she did a magnificent job. It was nice having guests from the PCA chapter join us. I want to thank Leslie Pilcher for making this all possible and for do-nating her time and home hosting this event. Linda Silvasy did an excellent job monitoring the class and the members enjoyed the extra breaks. The pattern offered to us by Onya was so versatile, I look forward to seeing all the pieces the members painted.

Our mobile home park ‘club house’ has opened. YEAH! Our Programs folks took a poll among the signups for the July class and since the COVID cases are spiking up… it was de-cided to continue our Program classes through the ZOOM ap-plication. Our next class in July is with Donna Carpenter who is willing to give the process a try from her shop in El Cajon. NEWSfrom1stVicePresidents(Programs)

What a great day to paint! This being the first time for Onya to teach via Zoom, she bravely picked up her paint brush and guided us through a beautiful stroke piece. Onya is such a good and patient teacher, her explanations and techniques gave even the novice stroke painter confidence to achieve something beautiful. Thank you Onya for a successful class. Without Leslie, there would not be any Zoom classes, so please let her know how much you enjoy the clas-ses so far. After feedback from those signed up for July’s class, we decided to not hold the in-person classes until Sep-tember, so that means Donna’s class in July, Cindy Smith’s class in August and Sandy Garcia’s class in September will all be Zoom classes. September is a busy month. Sandy’s class starts us out with a Zoom class, and the next weekend the third Saturday in September, the long awaited MPI will be finally ready to go. It WILL BE AT THE MOBILE HOME PARK. If you have questions, please contact the committee chairs, Ramona or Charlotte. Please support our chapter and teachers by signing up for all future classes. You may send a check to Debi Stivers. Remember, all these classes were voted on by you, and we need to fill our classes. We anticipate October and November will be at the mobile home park.

And a special thanks to Sandy Lonnecker who correctly guessed our MPI teacher in 1999, Liz Briel was under that lamp shade. I have a great slide show of all the past events that will play during the Christmas party.

*Just a note on Zoom etiquette, when leaving a Zoom meeting it is appropriate to just “leave the meeting” without comment. Even though we all wish to thank the teacher, it can be distract-ing to the teacher & students. Just send her an email thanking her after the fact. This is so new to all of us, we are learning too. Remembering Candy Sciarretta

We lost a long-time PHP member, and a dear friend to many of us, with the sudden passing of Candy Sciarretta this past month. Besides PHP, Candy was also a member of Brush Whackers, and through the years had served on Programs, Christmas Committees, and most recently, as PHP's Hospital-ity person. She loved good food and was an excellent cook, often preparing items for our Paint-In lunches, as well as doing the coordination of our lunches each month.

On a personal level, Candy was a big part of how I became involved in SDP, and eventually PHP; her love of painting and learning new tech-niques was inspiring. For over a decade, Candy invited a group of us to her painting room each week, and her welcoming spirit, fun personality, and sense of humor, kept us coming back week after week. (Even when we didn't feel like painting!!) She always encouraged us to try new things, or show us how to do a new paint stroke or technique.

As you can imagine, Candy was very devoted to her family, and was also a true animal lover. It seemed there was always a new pet at her home that had recently been rescued or adopted, with the most recent being two little chihuahua dogs; they totally ADORED Candy. She will be missed, on so

many levels, by so many... I'm sure that Heaven appreciates the new Shining Star that has been added there; and as for us, the dear memory of Candy's friendly spirit and helpful ways, will live on in our hearts.

MYSTERY PAINT-IN 2020 - THE UPDATE

Our much-anticipated annual Mystery Paint-In event was rescheduled for Saturday, September 19th, 2020 due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns, but is still wrapped in an air of mys-tery. The committee and helpers have been working very hard to keep all of the fun and shenanigans “under wraps” while we wait. Please hang tight with us as we solve this con-tinuing mystery. We have a plan, and options A, B, C, & D so that we follow the most cur-rent local and state guidelines to keep you safe. Which one will it be? A, B, C, or D? Stay tuned and hang on to your toilet paper rolls.

July is the national month for grilling, picnics, hot dogs, baked beans, horseradish, pickles, blueberries, and ice cream. For those who like to do their cooking in a kitchen, July is also National Culinary Arts Month and Lasagna Awareness Month. According to Wikipedia, July is National Ice Cream Month with National Ice Cream day celebrated the third Sunday in July. Some popular flavors are Bacon and Beer (yes! those really are flavors of ice cream!), Butter Brickle and Butter Pecan (brickle has pieces of toffee and pecan has, well, you know, pecan pieces), Chocolate, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, which was said to have originated in 1984 at the first Ben & Jerry's "scoop shop" in Burlington, Vermont, from an anonymous suggestion on their flavor suggestion board. Cookies and Cream is a variety of ice cream and milkshake based on flavoring from choco-late sandwich cookies, with the most popular version containing hand or pre-crumbled cookies from Nabisco's Oreo brand; Garlic ice cream consists mainly of vanilla, or honey, and cream as a base, to which garlic is added. It has been featured at many garlic festivals, including the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Of course, we can’t forget Mint Chocolate Chip which is the fourth most popular flavor. Then Pistachio, Rasp-berry Ripple and Strawberry, Neapolitan and Rocky Road and last but not least, Vanilla which many people often consider to be the "default" or "plain" flavor of ice cream. Wikipedia lists 31 different flavors of ice cream so you could have a different flavor every day of the month! Better buy a small container of each one or August will become National Diet Month!

Ina Schaefer-Chavez shares her July 6 birthday with Kevin Hart, Sylvester Stallone and George W. Bush.

Sharon Carlen shares her July 7 birthday with Ringo Starr and former Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan.

Tina Burlason shares her July 13 birthday with Harrison Ford, comedian Ken Jeong and Patrick Stewart, aka Captain Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Renee Molloy shares her July 17 birthday with Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany, David Hasselhoff, Luke Bryan, country singer, and Mark Burnett, creator and producer of Survivor.

Shirley McDonald shares her July 18 birthday with James Brolin, Richard Branson and Kristen Bell.

Carol Dombrosky shares here July 21 birthday with singer Cat Stevens, Robin Williams and Ernest Hemingway.

Kenna Perrin shares her July 27 birthday with comedian Bill Engevall, Norman Lear and singer Maureen McGovern.

Cheryl Powell shares her July 31st birthday with author J.K. Rowling, Wesley Snipes, economist Milton Friedman and Ger-aldine Chaplin.

We want to wish all of these chapter mem-bers a very happy birthday and hope to see you soon, either in person or more likely in a Zoom class.

It’s that time of year again! Our biggest fundraiser and a chance to win an amazing hand painted item.

Within the next couple of weeks, you will be receiving a packet that includes 20 raffle tickets. We ask that each member either sell or purchases the raffle tickets. The funds raised from this event will go to helping with our Mystery Paint-in, Seminars, Christmas Party and other events to keep Palomar Heritage Painters fun and educational for our members.

Here’s how it works:

1. Put your name, phone number on each ticket.

2. Indicate which pieces (s) you are interested in winning and your tickets will be placed accordingly. (If you do not choose a particular piece, your tickets will be divided between the three pieces being offered.)

3. Return the tickets and money to:

Sandy Garcia 29040 Miller Road

Valley Center, CA 92082

4. The drawing will be held at our October, 2020 Paint-In. You do not need to be present to win.

GOOD LUCK!

These nesting tables would make a gorgeous addition to any home. They measure 15 x 11 inches and are 19 inches tall. The theme of the three tables is Nursery Rhymes and feature Jack and Jill, The Three Little Pigs, and Little Red Riding Hood. The big bad wolf is also present and ready to pounce!

This End Table is a compilation of multiple Rosemary West Designs using her signature colors and country checks. The sides are done in a monochromatic palette with both the chicken and rooster prominently featured. The lid slides open to reveal a storage cabinet and sliding shelf to keep all your small items organized. The dimensions of the End Table are 13 X 18 inches and 25 inches tall.
