Hebron Holy Sites & Attractions
Ma’arat HaMachpelaHebron, City of the Fathers and Mothers, commands a unique and central position in Jewish history. The Patriarchs and Matriarchs – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca & Leah – the founding family of the Jewish people, are interred here. It was here that Abraham made the first purchase of Jewish property in the Land of Israel and therefore Hebron stands for an eternal bond between the People and the Land of Israel. Ma’arat HaMachpela is considered the second holiest site in Judaism, the roots of Jewish people-hood.
Avraham Avinu SynagogueThe Avraham Avinu Synagogue, built in 1540 by Spanish Jews escaping the Inquisition, exiles, was the center Jewish quarter of Hebron. The once beautiful synagogue was razed to its foundation under Jordanian occupation and turned into a sheep pen. In 1976 the Jewish community restored the synagogue using historic photographs creating an exact replica with a new women’s section. Today once again it stands in the center of the neighborhood named after the synagogue surrounded by a yeshiva, kollel, kindergartens, clinics and community offices.
The Hebron Museumand Beit Hadassah
Built in 1893, Beit Hadassah was a local medical center serving Jews and non-Jews alike. In the 1929 Hebron massacre Jews were murdered at the site, and the survivors deported. In 1979 a group of women and children courageously entered the building and refused to be evacuated. This eventually led to a permanent Jewish residence, which now houses many families. Beit Hadassah is also home to the Hebron visitors Center and the “Touching Eternity” 4D experience (added in 2015). New renovations are scheduled for the museum, making it even more interactive and meaningful. There is always something new to do in Hebron!
Tel Hebron Archaeological DigTel Hebron, in partnership with the Jewish Community of Hebron, is an excavation performed by the Israel Antiquities Authority in 2014 and was opened to the public in 2018 as an official site of the Israel National Parks Authority. It is a biblical hill containing remains of a Jewish settlement from the Early & Late Roman periods and the Byzantine period. The site preserves ancient artifacts: remains of a unique fortification from the Bronze Age (Canaanite) & the Iron Age (Iron Age), 2 unique public mikvahs (ritual baths), the remains of a pottery workshop from the Early Roman period and a winepress that was used in the Late Roman and Byzantine periods. Visit the past and preserve the future!
Tombs of Ruth and Yishai An ancient structure near Tel-Hebron, is identified as the burial place of Yishai (father of King David) and Ruth, The “Queen Mother” of the Davidic dynasty. Jews worshipped here for many generations, customarily gathering there on Shavuot for a festive public reading of the Scroll of Ruth, which recounts the story of the family of Ruth, Yishai and David.
Tel Hebron Observatory & Neighborhood
Tel Hebron, also known as Admot Yishai, the original Hebron in Biblical time was fortified with massive stone walls. Its main water source was “Abraham’s Spring” which can be visited to this day. In 1811, the land was purchased by the Jewish community but it took until 1984 for Jewish families to finally resettle the area. The Beit Menachem apartment complex was completed in 2005 and the Hebron Observatory was established on the roof in 2014, giving visitors a panoramic view of both Jewish and PA-controlled Hebron & its sites.

Merits from the Fathers and Mothers in IYAR!Rabbi Chaim Falagi, a great 19th century Kabbalist, wrote about the month of Iyar: “the Hebrew letters of Iyar stand for אייר - Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov and Rachel...fortunate is the one who
donates to Hebron this month...His donation will protect him and make him succeed in everything!"We are now entering the month of Iyar.

Did you know that…
THERE ARE 3 PLACES RECORDED IN THE BIBLE IN WHICH THE JEWS PURCHASED PROPERTY IN ISRAEL (WITH A DEED OF SALE):
• The Temple Mount in Jerusalem
• Joseph's Tomb in Shechem
• Tomb of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs (Ma’arat HaMachpela) in Hebron
Of all three places, the only place Jews can practically visit or pray at is MA’ARAT HAMACHPELA! This is only possible because (unlike the other two places) there is a Jewish community living in Hebron. Thanks to generous donors like you who support the Jewish Community in Hebron, the Ma'arah remains accessible to all.
Thank you for your support!

Parnas HaYom – Sponsor a Day of Torah Study in Hebron!
Remember your loved one in ancient Hebron – the entrance to the Garden of Eden. A Rabbi will study Torah and say Psalms in their memory in Israel. Your sponsorship will be recognized on a plaque for that day. Permanent plaques and project dedications are also available.
To learn more about this and other opportunities to support Hebron, visit hebronfund.org, contact our office (718) 677-6886,

Hebron Massacre (Tarpat)Similar to the most brutal of pogroms against Jewish communities in Europe,
the horrifying massacre of the Jews of Hebron on August 23, 1929 (18th Av)are known as the "1929 Riots" for the bloodshed it brought to Hebron after
inflammatory sermons were given in mosques in Jerusalem that Friday. For the complete story, visit HebronFund.org.
