19th Annual
#1 Hebron Top Dog Contest
Hebron Town Clerk, Carla Pomprowicz, is reserving the # 1 Hebron Dog Tag for
the fiscal year 2019-2020 for the contest winner.
If you think your dog deserves this honor, send a photo of your dog with your
dog’s name, your name, address and phone number to Town Clerk’s Office, 15
Gilead Street, Hebron, CT 06248. (Resumes 'not necessary) Photo must be received no later than Friday, May 10th.
The #1 Hebron dog tag will be issued free of charge, compliments of the Town Clerk. The voting for “Top Dog” is open to the general
public from May 13

. Visit the Russell Mercier Senior Center, at 14 Stonecroft Drive, between 8:15 and 4:15 Mon-
day—Thursday and 8:15 and 12:45 on Fridays, to cast your vote.
The winner will be announced on May 29,
2019 at 12:45pm. In addition to the #1 tag, the #2 and #3 Hebron tags will be reserved for the
two runners up. Dog licenses go on sale June 1
st
. Owners of previously licensed dogs will be sent a notice reminding them to renew their
license during the month of June. The cost is $8.00 for spayed or neutered dogs and $19.00 for all others. State law requires penalty
charges of $1.00 per month to be added when licenses are not renewed by June 30.
Vitals Check
Beginning in May, the 2nd Tuesday of the month, Christine Boudreau from Douglas Manor will be here from 10:00—10:30AM doing
blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen level checks. She will be here Tuesday, May 14th from 10:00—10:30. To make an appoint-

Guest Speaker—Fox Rehab Discussing Fall Prevention and Maintaining Strength
Please join Kimberley Quinn from Fox Rehabilitation as she discusses fall prevention and how to keep and maintain your strength. She
will speak Monday, May 13th 10:15—11:15am. Please call to sign-up, 860-228-1700.
Nutrition Education Workshop by UCONN Nutrition Assistant Program
Please join us on Wednesday, May 1st from 1:00—2:30pm. This program is taught by Krissy Anderson, Community Nutritionist, from
the UCONN Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program-ed. This is the class rescheduled from April 17th. It will focus on Ways to Increase
Fiber and Decrease Sugar in the diet to obtain a healthier diet. Each class will have a cooking demo that will show how to prepare a
healthy low cost meal. This is a free program, but registration is required in order to have enough for those that attend. To register

Commission on Aging Meetings
The Commission on Aging continuously studies the conditions and needs of the elderly persons in the community and makes
recommendations. The commission meetings are open to the public. In 2019, the commission is scheduled to meet on the following
dates; Wednesday, May 1, July 3, September 4, November 6. They meet 8:30AM in the card room at the senior center.
Community Café
Lunch is served at 12:15PM, Monday through Thursday at 12:15pm—enjoy lunch for a suggested donation of $2.50 for seniors 60 years
and over. Lunch is available for those under 60 for a cost of $7.50 per lunch. Reservations are required by 10am the day before with the
exception of Monday’s which is required by Thursday by 10am. To sign-up for lunch call 860-228-1700.
BINGO
Grab your good luck charm and head to the Russell Mercier Senior Center Bingo Hall. Bingo is played every Thursday from 1:00—3:00
PM at the Senior Center. The first card costs $1 and entitles a player to play in all Bingo games. Each additional card is then 50 cents
each. Prizes are awarded each game and refreshments served. No sign-up required, just come on down and join the fun.
A gentle reminder that everyone is asked to please turn their cell phones to silent when the games begin. Thank you.
Book Club
The book club meets the last Tuesday of the month, May 28th from 10:45—Noon. “Rules of Civility: A Novel” by Amor Towles. In a jazz
bar on the last night of 1937, watching a quartet because she couldn't afford to see the whole ensemble, there were certain things Katey
Kontent knew. By the end of the year she'd learned - how to launch a paper airplane high over Park Avenue, how to live like a redhead,
and how to insist upon the very best . FYI, this is the same author who wrote “A Gentleman in Moscow”. The book will be available at the
Douglas Library. We are looking for anyone interested in taking over facilitating the book club, 860-228-1700.
Yoga—Wednesdays & Fridays at 9:00
Yoga meets Wednesday and Fridays from 9:00—10:00am. The next session is anticipated to start on Wednesday, April 24th running
through May 31st. There will be 6 Wednesday classes and 6 Friday classes, $12 for Wednesday, $12 Friday OR $24 for both days. The

Silver Sneakers FLEX Class—Mondays 11:05, Wednesday & Friday 10:10

You MUST pre-register for class. This class will focus on muscular strength, balance and improving reaction time which will improve
your ability to feel strong and stable. Please bring hand held weights, a whiffle bat OR walking stick OR cane that is approximately 30—
34inches high (just below the hip), and a Resita Band. To see if your insurance provider is a Silver Sneakers participant call 1-866-584-
7389. If so, there is no charge for this class. If your insurance is NOT a Silver Sneakers provider, you can purchase a punch card for $30
for 10 classes. Pre-registration is required for NEW participants to the Silver Sneakers class. You MUST BE SIGNED UP PRIOR TO

ZUMBA Gold—Classes Tues & Thurs—10:10—11:10
Tuesdays and Thursday 10:10—11:10. This next session will begin Tuesday, May 7through Thursday, May 30th. This is a 2 time
per week class. There will be 8 classes in this session and the cost will be $16. To register come to the center or call 860-228-1700.
Enhance Fitness—Mondays, Tuesdays, & Thursdays 9:00—10:00am
This class will focus on dynamic cardiovascular exercise, strength training, balance, and flexibility. Being this class is an evidence based
program, the class will meet 3 times per week to increase the participants fitness gains. People who regularly attend class have proven to
grow stronger, improve their balance, become more limber, and elevate mood. The class will meet Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays
from 9:00am—10:00am. Each session will be a 16 class session and will cost $32. The next new session begins Monday, May 6th
and will run through Tuesday, June 11th. There will be 16 sessions for $32.
ACTIVE Fitness (formerly called Men’s Strength and Fitness Class)
We have renamed the Men’s Fitness Class to ACTIVE—Agility, Core, Toning, Improving health, Vibrancy, Energy. This class is perfect for
both men and women who are looking to improve overall strength, core strength, balance, and overall fitness. This differs from Enhance
Fitness by being 15 minutes shorter and having less of a cardio component. The class will be taught by Paul Smith and will meet on
Wednesday’s and Friday’s from 11:20-12:05. The next class session will begin Friday, May 10th and run through Friday, May 31st.
No class Wednesday, May 8th—Parking lot scheduled to be paved. This session will have 7 classes and cost $14. To Register or for

Dr. Cross—Hearing Tests
Dr. Cross will be performing hearing checks on Wednesday, May 1st from 10:00am—11:00am. It is always smart and helpful to have a
baseline test and periodic screenings for your hearing so you can maintain your hearing and/or take the necessary steps if assistance is
needed. Be proactive before it is too late. To make an appointment, please call 860-228-1700.
“Let’s Talk About It”
Every first and third Monday of the month, join Tanya Coles-Dailey, the Senior Center Social Worker, for a new discussion series. The
topics will vary based on current topics, group feedback, or what you need to know. The program will incorporate an educational compo-
nent (video, power point, handouts, etc.) followed by a facilitated group discussion led by Tanya. The May classes will meet the 6th &
20th from 10:00am—11:00am. To sign-up, please call 860-228-1700.
NEW—Informational Meeting for Adventure Outing Programs
We will begin offering “Adventure Outing” Programs this summer that are for the adventurous folks who like to hike, kayak,
explore, participate in active outing trips, etc. This meeting is to tell you more about it, what’s already planned, and get ideas
from you. The meeting will be Tuesday, May 7th at 11:15 AM.
Movie Matinee Wednesday—NOTICE DATE CHANGE THIS MONTH ONLY
The movie will be shown on Wednesday, May 15th at 12:45pm. It will be A Star is Born. Seasoned musician Jackson Maine discovers -
- and falls in love with -- struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer until Jackson coaxes
her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jackson fights an on-
going battle with his own internal demons. Starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The June movie will be on Wednesday, June 5th. It
will be Green Book.
Mindful Meditation with Mandy
The meditation class will meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month May 14th and 28th from 10:45am—Noon. Mindful
Meditation is the opportunity to develop the skill of paying attention to your inner and outer experiences with acceptance, patience, and
compassion. Mindful Meditation is effective for the management of stress, anxiety and panic, chronic pain, depression, obsessive thinking,
strong emotional reactivity, and a wide array of health related concerns. Please register by Monday, prior to the Tuesday class, 860-228-
1700. Please bring a non-perishable food item as payment for the program, this will be donated to HIHS Food Pantry.
Massage or Reflexology with Tami Toscano
Tami Toscano offers massage and reflexology. Tami comes to us bringing many years of experience both in California and Connecticut
and includes working with the senior population. She has already begun services here at the center and is getting rave reviews. Tami will
be here from 10:00am—4:00pm Thursday, May 9th and 23rd . The cost is $22 for 25 min and $44 for 50 minutes. To schedule an ap-

Learn to Weave
Monday, May 20th at 1:00pm there will be an instructional class to learn to weave. You will need to purchase a loom prior to the class.
Information on where you can purchase the materials is available at the Senior Center. You can either pick it up or it can be emailed to
you. Loom kits range between $15—$39 depending on the size of the loom and materials included. Cost for the class is $5. To sign-up

BINGO with RHAM National Honor Society Students
On Wednesday, May 22nd from 2:30—4:00pm, the RHAM National Honor Society Students will be hosting Bingo for us here at the cen-
ter. This is a free event with prizes awarded. Refreshments will be served. This will be the last RHAM Bingo for the school year. Let’s
have a big turnout to show our appreciation to the students.
May Birthday Party
The Birthday Party Lunch will be held on Wednesday, May 22nd at 12:15pm. The menu will be lasagna, salad, rolls, and birthday cake.
The cost is $5. If your birthday is in the month of the celebration and you are a Hebron/Amston resident your meal is free, but you must
pre-register. Registration deadline is Monday, May 20th. You can register coming to the Senior Center or by calling 860-228-1700.
Veterans Coffee Hour - Wednesday, May 22nd
Hebron Senior Center is pleased to announce a new activity open to the military public (including the surrounding communities) on the
fourth Wednesday of every month (May 22nd). We are conducting a Veterans Coffee Hour at 10:00 a.m. to promote information shar-
ing, camaraderie, and education as to benefits and entitlements Veterans may be eligible for. The Coffee Hour is hosted by Wayne I.
Rioux, Veterans Liaison for Hartford Health Care at Home. Wayne is an Army Vietnam Era Veteran and a retired Connecticut State
Police Lieutenant. Wayne brings 6 years of experience in sharing information and assisting Veterans with benefits, entitlements, including
financial assistance.

PLANNING AHEAD
Fraud and What You Need to Know to Protect Yourself
Join us on Thursday, June 27th at 10:30am, as we present Catherine Blinder from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protec-
tion to talk about how to protect yourself from the various types of fraud which can include; Data privacy, internet fraud, telemarketing,
False or misleading advertising, Funeral home contracts, Guarantees and warranties, Home improvement Contractors, Home solicita-
tion, Door to door sales, Identity theft, etc. To sign-up for the talk please stop by or call the Senior Center at 860-228-1700.
Bus Trip—Clinton Outlets and Lunch
Join us on Friday, June 21st for shopping and lunch. Leave the Senior Center at 9:00am to go to the Clinton Outlets. Then have
lunch at Bill’s Seafood in Westbrook. Cost is $5 for transportation. Lunch cost is on your own and note that Bill’s only accepts CASH.
Return to the Senior Center approximately 2:30.
Bus Trip—Essex Steam Train & Riverboat Excursion
Join us on Friday, July 12th to enjoy a 3-course lunch aboard a restored 1920’s Pullman Diner Car as part of a 3.75 hour lunch, train,
and riverboat sightseeing excursion. Depart from the Essex train station at 11:30 and travel on a scenic train excursion while dining,
then board the Becky Thatcher Riverboat at 1:00pm for an hour and a half boat ride up the Connecticut River, and return to board the
train at 2:45 for your scenic ride back to the train station. Lunch includes fresh garden salad, your choice of either beef tips with gravy,
baked chicken, or eggplant parmesan, vegetable, a starch, roll, chef’s choice of dessert, and coffee. Cost is $58. Bus will leave at
10:00am and return approximately 4:00pm. This trip is rain or shine. Deadline to register is Thursday, June 27th and
NO REFUNDS after this date. Space is limited, only 15 seats available. To register please call or come to the Senior Center 860-228-

Bus Trip—Saratoga Speedway
Thursday, August 1st depart Ted’s parking lot at 7:30am to head to Saratoga, NY to spend the day at the Racetrack. You’ll arrive at
the Racetrack with plenty of time to explore the grounds, see the horses, and find your reserved seat and place your bets. There are
many places to dine within the track (food is on your own). Depart the racetrack at 5:00pm, stop for dinner on the way home (payment
on your own) and return approximately 10:00pm. The deadline to register is Wednesday, Friday, July 19th. Cost of the trip is $86. To

Transportation
Through the Russell Mercier Senior Center, transportation is coordinated for senior and adult disabled individuals via two
handicapped accessible vans and a town-owned car for medical care, social trips, shopping, banking, or other needs.
Dial-a-Ride operates in accordance with the following prioritization given to advance scheduling:
• Non-emergency medical/pharmaceutical appointments/transportation Senior Center’s congregate nutritional lunch program
• Appointments related to financial/homecare/legal assistance programs
• Group clinics/health screenings (e.g., those scheduled at the Senior Center)
• Senior Center social events/outings, informational/educational sessions, etc.
• Trips limited to within Hebron or contiguous towns (Andover, Bolton, Colchester, Columbia, Glastonbury, Lebanon, Marlborough)
for other personal needs
• Fares are charged for transportation. The fee schedule .50 each way within Hebron, $1.00 each way within contiguous towns ,
and $2.50 each way for surrounding towns that we travel too which is listed on transportation policies on the Senior Center web-
site or available at the Senior Center.

Tax Assessment exemptions, tax relief programs, and filing deadlines:
The Assessor’s Office assists eligible residents in applying for various tax exemptions and tax relief programs. These pro-
grams; veterans exemptions, elderly tax relief for homeowners and 100% totally disabled homeowners receiving Social
Security, are offered in conformance with eligibility requirements and specifications of state enabling legislation. Basic
requirements for these programs are to be 65 years of age or 100% totally disabled and, meet a qualifying income that is
set each year by the state. The maximum income limits set for the October 1, 2018 Grand List year is: Single - $36,000,
Married - $43,900.
Filing times for these programs are: Disabled or Elderly Homeowners (February 1
st
– May 15
th
); Additional Veterans
(February 1
st
– October 1
st
). To apply for the Veterans exemptions, your DD214 or Honorable discharge must be filed with
the Town Clerk by September 30th. To qualify for a blind or totally disabled exemption proof must be filed with the
Assessor’s Office by October 1st.

Renters Rebate Program
To All Renters in the Town of Hebron
The Russell Mercier Senior Center will again this year be making appointments to take applications for the annual Renters
Rebate
Program between April 1 and October 1, 2019
Basic requirements for this program:
• You were age 65 or older by December 31, 2018
• Or, if not age 65, by the close of 2018 you must have been eligible to receive permanent total disability benefits under
Social Security or any federal, state, or local government retirement or disability plan, including any government related
teacher’s retirement plan
• You were a renter in Hebron or anywhere else in Connecticut for some or all of 2018
• The maximum 2018 income for an unmarried person is $36,000 and for a married couple $43,900.
Income documentation required for this program:
• Proof of all gross income for 2018 which includes federal gross income or its equivalent, such as, but not limited to,
wages, lottery winnings, taxable pensions, IRS’s, interest, dividends and net rental income (excluding depreciation); copies
of all 1099’s for 2018 must be provided and, if a Federal Income Tax Return was filed for 2018, a copy of the return must
be provided
• Proof of Non-Taxable Interest for 2018, for example, interest from Tax Exempt Government Bonds
• Proof of Social Security Income documented by your form SSA 1099 for 2018 or a form TPQY from Social Security or
a Benefit Verification Letter from Social Security documenting 2018 income
• Proof of any income for 2018 not reflected in the above such Federal Supplemental Security Income, Veteran’s Pen-
sions, Veteran’s, Disability Payments, etc.
Expense documentation required for this program:
• Proof of all rent paid in 2018 excluding the cost of cable TV
• Proof of all electric bills paid during 2018
• Proof of all natural gas, water, and heating fuel expenses for 2018

Monthly Recipe
Spring Vegetable Frittata
Ingredients
• 4 ounces fresh asparagus
• 1/2 (8-oz.) package cremini mushrooms, sliced
• 1/2 small yellow onion, sliced
• 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
• 1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper, divided
• 2 tablespoons butter
• 8 large eggs
• 2 ounces crumbled feta cheese
Directions
• Preheat oven to 400°. Cut asparagus into 1-inch pieces, discarding tough ends.
• Sauté mushrooms and onion in 2 tsp. hot oil in a 10-inch nonstick ovenproof skillet over medium heat 4 to 5 minutes or until onion
is tender; remove from skillet. Add remaining 1 tsp. oil to skillet, and sauté asparagus 2 to 3 minutes or until tender; stir in 1/4 tsp.
each salt and pepper. Remove from skillet. Wipe skillet clean.
• Melt butter in skillet over medium heat. Whisk together eggs and remaining 1/4 tsp. each salt and pepper. Add egg mixture to skil-
let. As eggs start to cook, gently lift edges of egg with a spatula, and tilt pan so uncooked portion flows underneath. Cook 2 to 3
minutes or until almost set. Top with vegetables and feta cheese.
• Bake frittata at 400° for 16 to 18 minutes or until slightly browned and puffy. Serve immediately.
Baked Parmesan Green Bean Fries
Ingredients
• 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
• 2 eggs
• 1 pound fresh green beans, ends trimmed
Directions
• Preheat oven to 425F. Lightly grease a large baking pan with non-stick cooking spray, or cover with parchment paper. Set aside.
• In a medium bowl, stir together the bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
• In a shallow baking dish or small bowl, whisk eggs.
• Dredge beans in flour mixture, then dunk in egg mixture, and then coat in the bread crumb mixture.
• Place beans in a single layer on prepared baking pan. Repeat with rest of beans until all are coated in bread crumb mixture.
• Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until coating turns golden brown and starts to crisp.
• Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes.
• Serve with ranch dressing or ketchup, if desired.
Crockpot Baked Apple Recipe
Ingredients
• 6 large apples I used
Gala
• 3/4 cup brown sugar
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 2 tablespoons margarine
or butter
• 1/2 cup apple juice
• 1/4 cup walnuts or 1/4
cup old fashioned oats optional ingredients
Directions
1. Wash and core apples. You can use a melon baller or pairing knife to core the
apples. Pair off a 1 inch strip of the skin around the top of the apple to prevent the
apples from splitting.
2. Mix the brown sugar, cinnamon, margarine and walnuts (or oats) together in a
large bowl and fill each apple with the mixture.
3. Place apples in the slow cooker and add the apple juice around the bottom of
the apples.
4. Turn crockpot on high heat and cook for 2 1/2 - 3 hours until apples are soft
when poked with a fork.
5. Serve with ice cream and caramel sauce or go old school and serve as is!!!
