Ten seniors from Congregation Beth Shalom including Neal and Elaine Singer, Jay and Sandy Rozen, Ben and Debra Ruben, Estelle Berman, Shirley Gottstein, Sara Mittelman, and myself traveled with other seniors from the Heritage Center to Westminster, Maryland (a suburb of Baltimore), from October 26-30 to participate in the semi-annual LearnInn sponsored by the Baltimore Jewish Community Center.

The group, thanks to a recommendation from Rabbi Tobin, first visited Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and enjoyed a guided tour of the Jewish Museum of Maryland and the Lloyd Street and B’nai Israel Synagogues.

The LearnInn was held at the Best Western Hotel and Conference Center, adjacent to the campus of McDaniel College. Kosher meals were provided for the attendees. For four full days, the group embarked on a learning adventure with 48 other seniors from various East Coast States. Shirley Gottstein spoke for the entire group when she said, “This is a fantastic bunch of people.”

Lectures with noted scholars included: Music of the Jews of Italy, The Jewish Community of Ghana and its Growth, The American Jewish Community at 350, Spiritual Foundations of Judaism, Israel at 60, Jewish Vaudeville and the Jazz Age in New York, and Healthcare from a Jewish Perspective. I was greatly interested in the Jews of Ghana who by their own hard work have built a beautiful synagogue, hospital, and high school from the proceeds of the gourmet coffee products they grow. Evening entertainment included all kinds of Jewish music and Broadway Theater. The retreat also included a guided bus tour of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and the nearby battlefields; free time to walk and roam the campus of McDaniel College, and a morning aerobic exercise class. All had a wonderful time and are looking forward to the next trip in 2009.

being read with care and with understanding.

Why not pursue the path of reading Torah? I will be teaching a beginner’s trope class in February. With just a basic knowledge of Hebrew, you can delve into the mysteries of the Scroll. Chanting the Torah brings you closer to God and makes real your connection to our tradition. It is truly a way to elevate your

soul while bringing honor to the congregation. This is not just about getting the melody right, it is about understanding the text as it was meant to be read. The Torah has humor, sadness, sarcasm, and the full range of the human experience. Learn to read it with all of its nuances and you will learn the nuances of Judaism.

Make Torah your resolution for the new year! Judaism springs from that well we call Torah, and that well is deep indeed. When I say to make Torah your resolution, many might hear me admonishing them to observe the mitzvot, or live more righteously, or study more. The beauty of Torah is that it can be pursued in many ways and there are many paths to its source. “Its ways are pleasant and all its paths are peace.”

The time between December and April is a time for reconnecting with the story of our people. We read of the story of Joseph, our growth and enslavement in Egypt, and our redemption. We read of the early years in the desert and the commandments handed down to us. We read of the difficulty of becoming a nation. It is a story worthy of

Mystery CongregantWere you able to guess that December’s Mystery Congregant was Betty Brand? Betty and her lovely

family are part of the many wonderful multi-generational families that we are fortunate to have at Beth Shalom.

This month’s Mystery Congregant is a relative “newcomer,” having only been at Beth Shalom for 12 years. Originally from New York, he and his family came to Kansas City because of a job offer. They were looking for a Conservative

congregation and one of the first people they met was Judy Jacks Berman. They immediately liked her and because of her, decided that Beth Shalom would be their

The Trustees of the Joel Polsky United Synagogue Youth Scholarship Fund have announced that the 2008 Joel Polsky International USY Convention Scholar is Andrew Azorsky. The scholarship is awarded each year to assist a meritorious member of KCUSY to attend the annual USY International Convention, which was held in Washington, D.C., December 21-25. KCUSY is a program of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

Andrew is the son of Susie and Greg Azorsky, and is the older brother of Hannah. Andrew is a senior at the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy. Andrew has exhibited superior leadership qualities in his USY

career and has demonstrated in his life a clear recognition of the critical role that American Jewish teenagers play in perpetuation of Jewish life and heritage in this country and in the world. As a USYer, Andrew has served KCUSY as Freshman Representative (2005-06), Membership Kadima Vice-President (2006-07) and Chapter President (2007-08). Currently, Andrew serves as Executive Vice-President/Israel Affairs Vice-President of Emtza Region USY. In describing his USY career, Andrew says “USY has provided the opportunity for a connection to Judaism rarely found anywhere else.” Andrew attributes a great deal of his own personal success to his USY experience, both at the local chapter and regional levels.

As the Joel Polsky International USY Convention Scholar, Andrew will share some of his experiences with the community at Youth Shabbat services on Shabbat morning, February 21.

new congregational home. They have never regretted that decision. One of our Mystery Congregant’s favorite things, in addition to Judy, the Rabbi and the Hazzan, is the Friday morning minyan led by Sylvan Siegler. Although our Mystery Congregant is also a minyan leader, he still gets nervous before each service that he leads. (He is an excellent leader.) He also loves the Library Minyan; not only for the service, but because he gets to drink Scotch before lunch. He loves to learn and is enrolled in Rabbi Friedman’s Tuesday Night Talmud class. One last clue, our Mystery Congregant has a contagious smile and a wonderful sense of humor, in spite of the fact that he has three children, all of whom are enrolled in college. Look around and enrich your life by meeting and greeting this month’s Mystery Congregant.

Why Do We…? Question: Why do we celebrate Tu B’Shevat?

Keruv Corner - קרוב CornerA Personal Story of an Interfaith FamilyI, a Jew by birth, find myself identifying with Jews from another era, when religion and shul were for men, while home and family were for women. Now, before judging that description from a modern politically correct perspective, we’re happy with ourselves, each other and our family.

My wife, who is not Jewish (or any religion), bakes challah, rugelach and hamantaschen, choreographed four B’nei Mitzvot, and joins her fellow “observant” Jews once a year at shul on Rosh Hashanah. I was a Bar Mitzvah, then “assimilated” for most of my life before marriage and children. I’ve become more spiritually connected and active as I’ve matured.

When living in another community, our Rabbi, a Holocaust survivor, urged us to have formal Orthodox conversions for our children. When our oldest was preparing for Bar Mitzvah, we all went to the mikvah together. My wife cooked a celebratory meal. Now grown, our children all identify as Jews. The one most like my wife recently joined a shul. Go figure.

We spend Shabbat evening at home. We celebrate Hanukkah, but not Christmas. Pesah is our big extended family holiday celebration. When I go to minyan occasionally, she gets her “beauty sleep.” When I attend Shabbat services, she bakes. Who has the “best” lifestyle?

I feel supported in my Jewish choices, and I support her in hers. The key is to respect each other, and each other’s choices and have expectations that can be met by real people who make their own decisions. L’chaim!

Tu B’Shevat is known as the New Year for trees and is celebrated on the 15th day of the month of Shevat. It is the date on which the first blooming trees in Israel are considered to begin their yearly cycle.

In Israel during the Temple Period, the 15th day of Shevat was used to calculate the age of trees for tithing. It is stated in Leviticus 19: 23-25 that fruit produced by trees may not be eaten for the first three years. The fruit produced during the fourth year is for God. Fruit produced the fifth year may be eaten, so age is important.

After the destruction of the second temple, the holiday took on new meaning since the laws of tithing did not apply outside of Israel. Celebration of Tu B’Shevat tied Jews in the Diaspora to the land of Israel.

Today it is the custom to eat a new fruit on Tu B’Shevat, especially a fruit grown in Israel such as the carob. School children in Israel often plant trees on this date. In other parts of the world, Jews collect money to plant trees in Israel.

The Hesed Committee is updating the list of congregants that are in a care facility or are homebound. Three times a year (Rosh Hashanah, Hanukkah and Passover) volunteers visit those on the list and leave them with a small gift. If you know of anyone not currently on the list, please contact Karen Borowick 913-685-1179, [email protected] or Linda Cohen 913- 642-0572, [email protected].

Hesed CommitteeWe understand the seriousness of the current unemployment situation across the area and want to help. Rabbi Tobin will be hosting a meeting Sunday, February 8, 9-10 a.m. in the Lamar conference room to discuss how best to help our unemployed members. If you are currently unemployed, are an employer looking for new hires or are able to support our members who are unemployed (through coaching, networking, etc.), please contact Debby Agron in the ritual office, 913-647-7281 or [email protected]. The Polsky Religious School is a Framework for Excellence School as designated by United Synagogue. This means that we meet certain criteria for our school program and curriculum, including tefillot requirements, family programs and informal programming. In order to receive this national recognition, we engage in a thorough documentation of all aspects of the school, staff and programs.

This year we are up for re-accreditation for Framework for Excellence and will once again engage in a thorough evaluation of every aspect of the school. We will only re-apply if we believe we run a school that is credible, has integrity and meets all the criteria set out by United Synagogue.

In preparation for this process, the following information came to our attention. We have 24 teachers in our core staff, teaching grades Pre K-10th, including Rabbi Tobin and Hazzan Menes. Every teacher has a bachelor’s degree, 12 of which are degrees in Education, nine teachers have master’s degrees, and we have a total of over 400 years of

teaching experience. Most of our teachers are members of the congregation and many of them have been teaching in our school for more than five years.

This is quite impressive and as we plan for the coming years for the school, we know that once again we will identify those areas of strength and opportunities for new programs.

I want to take this opportunity to update you on the financial condition of Congregation Beth Shalom. With our country facing a severe financial crisis, it may not be surprising for you to learn that our synagogue also faces difficult financial challenges which must be addressed.

In May 2008, the Board of Directors approved a budget for fiscal year 2008-09 that would result in a deficit of $105,000 and included an administrative staff reduction and reorganization and other expense reductions. The Board also committed to investigating all options for achieving a balanced budget, as operating at a deficit cannot be allowed to continue.

As the new fiscal year commenced, Ron Cooperman was appointed budget committee chairman. Ron formed a committee of talented financial professionals to intensify the process. Their first task was to update the budget to reflect our most recent revenue and expense estimates, which showed that the deficit for this year was more likely to be $215,000, due to lower revenues than expected. The committee is now preparing recommendations to the board for increasing our revenues and achieving additional expense reductions. As we progress with this process, we

will share additional details with all congregants so that everyone is kept informed.

Over the course of our 130 year history, Beth Shalom has overcome numerous challenges and this year will be no exception, but we need your help. Please do your part by making your payments on time, and continuing to be as generous as possible. Consider underwriting a program that has been meaningful for you and your family. Remember Beth Shalom in your estate plan. Also, we would appreciate hearing your thoughts on ways in which we can improve our financial position. This message is meant to inform you of the fiscal realities we face and how we are diligently addressing them. Working on this together, we will ensure the future of our dynamic congregation.

The Strategic Planning Committee wishes to thank all the congregants who responded to the survey prepared by our consultants, Jameson and Associates, in collaboration with Joan DeMerchant and the Strategic Planning Committee. The feedback you provided was excellent and will be invaluable in the creation of the final plan.

There will be a day-long Strategic Planning Committee retreat in mid-January, where results will be analyzed and discussed in detail. In February, there will be two planning committee meetings to finalize the plan and the consultants will complete the written plan document. The plan will then be presented to the synagogue’s officers and directors in March and to the congregation in April.

As part of our continuing program to honor people who have contributed to the richness of the ritual life of the congregation, Torah readers who have read on three or more different occasions since Rosh Hashanah will be honored at a special Yad Hazakah ceremony during Shabbat services on January 31.

Make plans to attend services that morning and help us honor those that have contributed so much of their time and diligent efforts for the beautiful Torah readings we are blessed with in our minyanim. This recognition is being made possible by a generous grant from Bill Kaiser.
