From the Rabbi’s Study….

One misguided principle of modern life is that we have bought the lie that the purpose of life is to have pleasure. Many forces have converged to bring this falsehood into the realm of supreme truth. Ads on televi-sion, radio, in the news media tell us the path to happiness is to purchase the next generation of cell phone, go on the perfect va-cation, or whatever the seller is trying to flog. Now, even politi-cians and economists are telling us that it is our moral obligation to buy things so that we prop up

the failing commercial system. Does this sound like skewed logic to you? The underlying principle of our faith is significantly different. Meaning, Judaism tells us, is not derived from “things.” Meaning is derived from attachment to the highest ideals. A couple of examples: Akiva - before he was a sage, scholar, and rabbi – was an ignorant worker. He could not write or read. Then at forty years old, Akiva energetically launched himself into a different modality of living. He was determined to extract the greatest meaning from his life before it was over. He immersed himself in Torah. Akiva, shepherd turned scholar, studied with the greatest minds of his time and was tireless in his pursuit of God.

Many, many years during the ruthless persecutions of Rome, Akiva was brutally tortured. This is how the Talmud relates his demise: As he was being tortured, Rabbi

Akiva joyfully recited the Sh’ma

- “Hear O Israel, the Lord our

God, the Lord is One.”

His s tudents exclaimed:

“Master, it is true that we must

be willing to die a martyr’s

death, if it is demanded… but in

such ecstasy?”

Rabbi Akiva replied: “All my

life, I have dedicated my life to

sanctify God's name. Now that I

have the opportunity to give my

life for that, I joyously perform

it!”

This text reveals a powerful truth. It is not a truth about dy-

ing; it is truth about living. For Rabbi Akiva, there was no doubt about the meaning of his life. He understood why he existed and his place in the cosmos. While God has no needs, we certainly do. What Akiva learned was that the greatest universal need is to find purpose through com-mitment. To find physical comfort in the world is nice but it does nothing to endow our lives with mean-ing. The new flat screen TV does not provide a reason to get up in the morning. Next example: In the war for Independence many brave peo-ple dedicated their lives to en-

sure that the Jewish nation would not be stillborn. One man, Zev put himself in harm’s way countless times through four long years towards the struggle for freedom. The Brit-ish authority eventually captured Zev. Thrown into jail, Zev was brutalized by his captors to re-veal his accomplices in the Haganah. In the process Zev lost a leg. After the country Israel was born, Zev went on to marry and start a family. Later, he said: “Looking back over my whole life, unquestionably the best pe-riod was being a member of the Jewish underground. True, much of it was a miserable exis-

tence. But every moment I was completely alive. I was liv-ing for something that I was willing to die for.” This is the seed of who we are as Jews. We believe that life is not for merely surviving or beat-ing out the competition. It is not about purchasing more things to find out who we are. Identity begins at a much deeper level. Perhaps that is why halacha, Jewish Law, states that we must begin the day with saying the Sh’ma and ending the day with it. That tiny act helps frame the rest of what we say and do. It is the starting point.

President’s message….

Another year has gone by and I clearly remember the warning from my parents: “The older you get, the faster time flies by.” But look how far we have come this past year. We have secured a rabbi that seems to feel the pulse of our congregation and both Rabbi Jonathan Case and his wife Rivke are weaving into our community; we are rebuild-ing our religious school with the guidance of our religious school director, Rebecca Pinsker; we have created and implemented our Endowment program under the Chairmanship of Bill Stern and the Endowment trustees; and we have reactivated fund raising and membership drives with vigor. The BOD made a difficult but necessary decision to raise dues in 2009 so that we

could continue to provide the needed services for our congre-gation in a fiscally responsible manner. As we have continually pointed out, we will work with every member and every family in Beth Shalom to keep them in the fold and be available for all of their spiritual, religious, and educational needs. Additionally, the BOD, at our last meeting, has committed to moving forward with strategic planning for the next 3-5 years. Co-chairs Henry Ray Wengrow and David Zalesne will be lead-ing the way, along with Harry Silverman from the United Synagogue, for all of us. We are at an important cross-roads - where do we, the Beth Shalom Congregation, see the syna-gogue in the next 3-5 years? We need to reflect within our-selves as we plot a path forward which needs to include all as-pects of synagogue life: the total congregation, the rituals and spiritual needs, the individual needs and expectations, the reli-gious school direction and the physical plant decisions. Your BOD cannot do this without your valuable input. You will

be hearing from us during the process as we form focus groups and have discussions about what each of you think is important for the future. We want to hear from those that attend regularly and well as those that might only come to synagogue once yearly. We want to hear from those who have been members for decades and those who are thinking of joining, or have just recently joined. We all have a stake in this. You have elected 7 new mem-bers to the board this year and I look forward to working with them and the continuing mem-bers. You have a strong board and I have great expectations for a successful 2009. Please feel free to contact me or any board member with your comments, questions, thoughts, or ideas. Any congregational member can be a member of any committee, you do not need to be on the board to be involved. So, if there is an area of interest for you, please contact the commit-tee chair and you will be wel-comed.

It is projected that Beth Shalom will end the 2008 year with a small deficit. The need for a dues increase was discussed for 2009. It is hoped that the increase, combined with increasing the endow-ment fund, along with fundraising should lead to a balanced budget in 2009.

Committee reports:

♦ Cemetery. There were 4 burials this past year. Damage to cemetery prop-erty was repaired during the year and the cemeteries are both in good main-tenance at the current time. Fundrais-ing for the cemetery yielded $3,196. The current price for a plot is $2,500 for an individual and $4,800 for fam-ily.

Other issues that are being discussed: attendance at minyans, having several services at once, physical modification of the sanctuary, promoting donations for Aliyahs, use of English replacing He-brew in places, continuing learners service, synagogue kitchen kosher status, policy of Aliyahs at events (how many, who etc), dress code in synagogue, using only one Chumash, role of students in leading services, qualifications of prayer leaders, eti-quette issues on the bema etc.

They established the Box and Lox on Sun-day mornings, helped with the Purim party, helped with high holidays and the Sukkah, and planned other events. The goal is to establish a brotherhood amongst the men of Beth Shalom.

♦ Board of Education Report: Student enrollment increased by 17 %. The Board feels that they are on the right path to further increasing enrollment. A new curriculum has been put into place under the direction of Rebecca Pinsker that should yield students with improved synagogue skills. All the News from Beth Shalom Religious School

With Chanukah over and Tu B’Shvat on the way, another school year is swiftly passing. I remember how slowly time seemed to move when I was younger and how one day I was wishing I was grown up, and then I had children who were just waiting to be ‘grown up!’ Where does time go? Why are there moments that last forever and days that seem to just fly away? Is there a way to make life just slow down? I believe there is. I believe we are blessed with two gifts that truly slow time down; Shabbat and G’milut Hasadim, acts of loving kindness. I believe that we are better when we allow sacred moments into our lives. On Shabbat, time itself has been made sacred by G-d and when our actions reflect the giving of our hearts we create other sacred moments. Each has a way of making us slow down and feel good and there is nothing that makes one feel so good inside as when we take the time to believe in something outside of ourselves. What it is that I believe about these two blessings is that each is giving, in its purest form, and thus expects nothing in return. Because there is no expectation, these blessings that we give and receive allow us to become aware of ourselves, others, and how to see the G-d in both. I believe that this is how “our days and the days of our children, on the land that G-d swore to give to our ancestors, will en-dure as heavenly days on earth.” Deuteronomy 11:21 During the month of December at Beth Shalom, we were able to make a sacred space and time with our students and their families. May the New Year of 2009 be filled with sacred moments in time.

Dig the Past strives to recreate the excitement and adventure of

an Israeli archaeological excavation.

Dig the Past is hands-on archaeology, where participants learn

and have fun by digging and getting dirty.

Through Dig the Past, participants experience a taste of Israel,

both past and present

Participants hunt for ancient treasures in the “tel” using dull tools. In the archaeology lab/daily life station, they learn how the artifacts they found were used in the past. As an option, children can paint pottery vessels.

Participants learn the basic concepts of the field of archaeology. They use small, safe tools and search for artifacts. In the Archaeology Lab, under the guidance of our experts, they reconstruct pottery vessels. Other activi-ties include learning about the lives of children in the past and writing their names in ancient Hebrew.

Participants enjoy a comprehensive Israeli archaeological experience. Be-ginning with a thorough introduction to archaeology, they excavate and sift at the “tel” while documenting their work. In the Archaeology Lab, they learn how the artifacts are studied, and wash and restore their own pottery vessels. Other activities include the study of ancient Hebrew (including the deciphering of texts) and other ancient technologies.

Participants delve deeper into several aspects of archaeology. Additional activities include site formation and documentation processes, dating tech-niques and ancient technologies such as food preparation, pottery-making, etc.

RAMBLINGS AND RUMINATIONS ON JEWISH EDUCATON AND JEWISH LIFE

Rabbi Dr. Leon H. Spotts, Beth Shalom Resident Scholar

The Israeli Kibbutz: Part 7

Arguably the most familiar institution in Israel for most of us during the pre-state years and the early years of the Jewish state was the

Kibbutz. In deed, the Kibbutz presented an almost romantic picture of life in Israel but the reality of the kibbutz was much starker. In theory, the Israeli Kibbutz exemplified the expres-sion of Marxism, as represented in the now famous communistic phrase, “from everyone accord-ing to his capacity; to everyone according to his needs”. The first kibbutz, called De-gania, was established in 1910 on a beautiful setting off the shore of the Sea of Galilee. It was populated by Jews from Eastern Europe who brought with them a collective socialistic ideology. More particularly, one of the members was A. D. Gordon, who preached the doc-trine called “the religion of la-bor”; in which he advocated working the land as a purifying force for Jews in Israel. And so, A. D. Gordon followed his own doctrine as he tilled the soil dur-ing the daytime until his late sev-enties and wrote his philosophi-cal articles in the evenings. Degania one was popularly known as the mother kibbutz and from this initial experiment in

collective living many other kib-butzim (plural of kibbutz) sprang up. Most of the kibbutzim were non-religious or secular in char-acter. Today, there are several kibbutzim that are indeed Ortho-dox and even a few Reform and/or Conservative kibbutzim. Originally, the early kibbutzim adopted certain practices which may or may not have been al-tered in individual kibbutzim as the movement developed over the years. Among them were the following: 1) children did not live with their parents, but were reared in a children’s home, where they could receive spe-cialized attention by “experts” in raising children. 2) no member of the Kibbutz could own any private property, and any gifts received by members of the kib-butz had to be turned over to the corporate treasury. 3) all deci-sions- large or small- had to be voted on at a regular meeting of Kibbutz members, including a cash expenditures and disburse-ment to kibbutz members. 4) all buildings and houses were the property of the kibbutz and members were housed in accor-dance with their personal status e.g., single members had stan-dard housing accommodations as did married members with given numbers of children. 5) all meals were taken in the common din-ing room, and the kitchen was generally open to all members 24 hours a day. 6) new members had to be approved unanimously by the existent members of the kibbutz following a trial mem-

bership period. Some or all of the above may have been modified on individ-ual kibbutzim by subsequent generations of kibbutz members, depending on the predilections of the membership of each indi-vidual kibbutz. The kibbutz movement in Israel never involved more than per-haps 5% of the total Jewish population living in Israel at that time. Today, the same holds true not withstanding; the kibbutzim produced an unparalleled group of talented military and political leaders, who occupied important positions in the army and the government of Israel. Over the years, the kibbutzim have expanded their economic base beyond the original agricul-tural motif. In particular, some kibbutzim offer tourism services (i.e., lodging, food, tours of the area). The kibbutzim have also branched out into the light indus-try (e.g., manufacturing of the ubiquitous black plastic tubing, which is used for the Israeli drip method of irrigation). Addition-ally, some of the kibbutzim have developed an expertise in higher technology – particularly in such areas as computers and medical equipment.

USED CLOTHING SALE A BIG SUCCESS

Thanks to the Herculean efforts of Gloria Goldberg and Tobie Drucker, with their years of retail experience and community contacts, we had another success-ful used clothing sale to benefit the synagogue. Our many repeat customers from last year told us they had been waiting for another sale of our used designer and upscale clothing, and were delighted to once again get good bargains.

Many thanks to those who donated clothing items, and especially to those who helped schlep, sort, and sell:
