andall PTSA has been busy as ever with the start of school! I want to thank all of you who have volunteered for all of the events

at school so far, such as picture day and selling PE uniforms. It is not too late to fill out the PTSA forms to become a member, volunteer, or donate. You can send the forms you have into school, pick up new ones in the school’s front office, or down-load from our PTSA website, www.randallptsa.org. Remember that with your support we can contin-ue to provide programs, incentives, and grants to the students and staff at Randall.

With both directions of traffic entering at Randall’s main entrance, it is imperative that we get traffic off FishHawk Boulevard. We are encour-aged to use both lanes as we weave around the school and then merge into one as we get

closer. Please be a good neighbor and allow cars to merge. They are not cutting the line! Please do not straddle the center lane so both lanes cannot be used, please do not use inappropriate hand gestures to others, and for those that need to yield please be patient. I know we can do better. I thank you for your help in this matter!

For those of you who have at least one adult and one student who joined our PTSA, we are offering a FUNdsaver Card. The card will provide dis-counts to local restaurants and businesses and have just come in. They will be sent home and you should have received yours by the time this newsletter goes to print in early October. Our Mixed Bag Fundraiser started on September 23rd with the last day of collection on October 9th. This fundraiser offers a wide variety of styles and patterns of bags, organizational tools, and pet accessories. They make great holiday, teacher, and birthday gifts. I do want to clarify that this is the PTSA’s traditional fundraiser and money raised is for the programs that PTSA supports at the school. The school’s magazine fund-raiser that will occur later this fall is run by Mrs. Johnson who has specific plans for that money and has nothing to do with the PTSA.

Please send in those Box Tops with your student as classes compete each month to see which one brings in the most. Also please support our restaurant Spirit Nights. Our first one with Formaggio’s Pizza netted over $200!

I want to thanks all of our business members and partners that support our PTSA throughout the year. I would like to especially thank Pinecrest Printing for donating our entire summer book-let that you received. Without them we could not have afforded to provide our RMS families with such a great tool of forms and information.

As always if you have any questions or need to get in touch with us you can email us at [email protected].

CAR LINE…need I say more! Please, please, please be courteous in the mornings during carline!

R.A.Y.S. Support Our TroopsKristy Verdi

The R.A.Y.S. Council Support Our Troops collection runs until October 4th! Students received a grade level list of supplies to send to the troops through their Social Studies teachers. Items need to fit in a gallon-sized ziploc bag, so please purchase with this in mind. We are also asking for donations to help pay the cost of shipping. Checks should be made payable to Support The Troops, Inc. You can also donate online at http://ourtroopsonline.com/. If you would like to purchase a Support the Troops t-shirt with a ribbon logo, order forms are available in Student Affairs and on Edsby. They are $15 and all proceeds go for postage ex-pense.

This event commemorates not only those who perished in the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania countryside, but also those who gave their own lives in their efforts to rescue others in need.

PATRIOT DAY IN LIVING COLOR Kristy Verdi

Patriot Day is a day of remembrance of the catastrophic terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The RMS 2013 Patriot Day event was a success due to the hard work of PTSA members and several community busi-nesses. As you can see, the R.A.Y.S. Council worked hard to create this mosaic of the American flag. The R.A.Y.S. Council would like to thank Ken Aguiar and Steve Kistler for photographing and videotaping the entire day! We would also like to thank Krys Newman and KinderKare @ Bell Shoals for donating red and blue Crayola markers for the project. Nancy Petersen at Fishhawk Storage has been an invaluable partner for the R.A.Y.S.. Neff Rental donated the use of a lift. Ace Hardware came to the rescue with stickers at the end of the day. Several community members made individual con-tributions to help with expenses. The Randall students worked very hard to make the memorial beautiful. Our NJHS assisted in taking down the memorial and storing markers for our 6th annual display!

A TALK WITH A TEACHER.. .OR TWO

nthony Rivera’s defining moment in life came in his sophomore year in high school. He had always planned on being a veterinar-

ian, but found himself selecting a series of history classes for his classes the next year. His Biology teacher reminded him, that if his aspirations were to be a veterinarian, he needed to select science classes. His decided interest in history was too much and that’s when he realized that maybe be-ing a history teacher was in his future instead.

His academic pursuits led him to Saint Leo Univer-sity, where he followed his dream into a career of teaching History and Civics. He remembers walk-ing across the graduation stage vividly and all of the hard work he put in to being the first member of his family to graduate from a four year degree college. He cites his parents as his greatest influ-ence. They taught him how hard work always pays off and the importance of being the best person he could be to others around him.

In addition to his love of history, he also recognizes the importance of reading and how it impacts how well one can do in school and in life. He realizes, that in teaching Civics and Advanced Reading, he is able to help students formulate their own thoughts and opinions and have a positive impact on their lives.

When asked, “If you could interview anyone living

or dead, who would it be and why?” Mr. Rivera chose Leonardo da Vinci because he is fascinated about how he came up with his inventions like the flying machine, armored car and parachute. He would also like to ask him why he did not finish many of his works.

As for lessons he has learned from teaching, pa-tience! “With having patience, anything is possible and you learn to listen to people more in doing so,” he says.

Mr. Rivera is also a huge sports fan, especially of Tampa Bay teams. Let’s hope his enthusiasm pays off as the baseball season winds down and the foot-ball season heats up!

“Where words fail, music speaks.” Kiley Astle Kolodziej [K -lo-jee] is passionate about music and its’ power in helping students understand aspects of all of their core subjects. Ironically, in middle school,

her Guidance Counselor told her that a career path in music may not lead to success. For her, it was a challenge to work harder and demonstrate that with music as her career path, she would still be successful!

eMs. Kolodziej believes that music is all encompass-ing and feels lucky to have been given the path she is on with music, life and being engaged in her work and with those important to her in life. She explains that life itself is a great accomplishment and she embraces opportunities to live it to the fullest. This enthusiasm carries over to what she values most, her family. Recently married to her husband, Marc, she credits him with providing her with support and strength in her pursuits. Her parents and sisters also taught her that every person must value themselves and love uncondi-tionally.

Southern Utah University was where Ms. Kolodziej pursued her undergraduate degree in Music Education. She teaches Orchestra to 6th graders during their Wheel curriculum and to 7th and 8th graders. Her teaching experience has taught her to be forgiving and that each day brings new life and experiences and that we are forever learning.

Join Ms. Kolodziej in a fun-filled evening on Monday, October 28th, for the Orchestra Carnival! Smokin’ Joes will be providing a delicious meal and the Orchestra students are busy at work creating games for all to enjoy. (See the flyer in this newsletter.) Come see where Ms. Kolodziej channels her creative energy in an event full of family fun!

COUNSELOR’S CORNERMelissa Miller, 7th Grade Counselor

ere is the important information for you to be aware of in October:1. Remember to wear Randall or sports team

shirts on Fridays for school spirit and to earn extra Hawk Bucks.2. Select 6th grade students will have a presentation sponsored by the Lightning Hockey Team to help improve math skills. This will be on October 8th and 29th and those students will be notified.3. October 21st will be a non-student day.4. Grades will be uploaded into Edsby on October 3rd and 17th. All parents should have received information on 9/23 about how to set up an account and access their child’s grades/assignments. If you need further help with it, you can contact Mrs. Hardy or Ms. Davis who have been doing a wonderful job training the faculty on the ins and outs of Edsby.5. ReadiStep testing will be done on October 23rd for all 7th grade students, so please be sure to have your children here on time that day. It will take most of the morning, and a make-up day will be done on 10/24. Ms. Miller will be in charge of this.6. The Character Ed qualities for the 9/30 lesson were being responsible for 6th grade, being loyal for 7th grade and being tolerant for 8th grade. For 10/28, the lesson will be being controlled for 6th grade, being thankful for 7th grade and being honest for 8th grade.7. Duke TIP information will be sent home in October to 7th grade students who qualified for this program. (Ms. Miller is in charge of Duke TIP. ) It in-volves being able to take the SAT or ACT early in 7th grade which is a great opportunity to see how those tests work and to compare themselves with other

7th graders who have taken it. There will be a parent night scheduled to go over all of this information too, so be on the look-out for that soon.8. Ms. Deschnow has periodic “Binder Busters” meet-ings for students who need help getting organized. She held one on September 20th at 8:30 in her room 209, and it was announced to all 7th graders at lunches. We will continue to let them know when this is happening.9. The counselors did a brief student survey with select students to see what areas they needed our help in. Topics included study skills, friendship issues, organization, test anxiety, and family issues. We will be working with them throughout the year to help in any way we can.10. Hopefully by this time, schedule changes have been done so everyone can be settled in their correct classes taking class size requirements into account. Thank you again for your patience and flexibility with all of these changes.11. Ms. Richards has begun bringing her therapy dog, Brie, back to school to help in select classes. She is usually here on Wednesdays and is available to any student who may need a loving, trained dog to help them talk out their issues. 12. Mrs. Richards was in the 6th grade Language Arts classrooms during September for a Welcome and Orientation to Randall. 13. Mrs. Richards is the 6th grade counselor and can be reached at 740-3900 X231 or [email protected]. Ms. Miller is the 7th grade counselor and can be reached at 740-3900 X255 or [email protected]. Ms. Roberts is the 8th grade counselor and can be reached at 740-3900 X233 or [email protected].

he internet is a valuable tool. However, today’s youth are often not mature enough to subscribe to social media sites. In just one

month at Randall Middle School there have been two incidents involving student’s with social media.

Keep all private information private. Here are some examples of private information that you should never give out on the Internet:

full namehome addressphone numberSocial Security numberpasswordsnames of family memberscredit card numbers

Think carefully before you create an email address or screen name. Web experts recommend that you use a combination of letters and numbers in both — and that you don’t identify whether you’re male or female.1

It’s not just strangers who can make you feel un-comfortable online. Cyberbullying refers to cruel or bullying messages sent to you online. These might be from former friends or other people you know. They can be irritating and, in some cases, even frightening.2

Internet SafetyDeputy Gary S. Maury

Fortunately, most people never experience cyber-bullying. But if you’re getting cyberbullied and ignoring it doesn’t make it go away, getting help from a parent, school counselor, or another trusted adult may be a good idea. That’s especially true if the cyberbullying contains threats.3

If you get these bullying messages online, it’s often better to ignore them rather than answer them. Cyberbullies, just like other bullies, may be angry or disturbed people — and may be looking for atten-tion or a reaction.4

Parents should always monitor student’s computers, mobile devices, and smart phones. Sexual preda-tors and offenders are using the internet to make contact with children. There is also the opportunity for students to bully other students via electronic devices. A recent study completed in 2012 indicates 37% of children have been cyber bullied during their lifetime.

Spirit Shirts Have ArrivedMonica Weaver

hank you students and parents for your great interest in the 2013-14 Spirit T-Shirt. Initial orders received at the beginning of the school

year have arrived. The first order of shirts were delivered to your student's homeroom teacher and passed out to students on Thursday, September 19th.

If you would like to order a Spirit Shirt, please complete the attached form found at the end of this newsletter or in the Principal's Hawk Newsletter on 9/23 or 9/30. After completing the form, please send both the payment and order form in to your student's homeroom teacher.

The second order has just gone in or will be in the next day or so. Expect two weeks for those shirts to come in. If you have any issues with your spirit shirt order, such as wrong size or you were missing one, please put your order in a bag with a note that ex-plains the issue and turn it into the front office and we will get in touch with you. Please label the bag to PTSA and make sure to include a phone number and email address with your name. Please note that we only ordered what was on the forms and prepaid so we cannot guarantee we can switch out the shirt if you ordered the wrong size. Students are encour-aged to wear their spirit shirt on Fridays and will receive Hawk Bucks for participating.

Hurry though! The next order deadline is Wednes-day, October 2nd and may be the last opportunity to order this year's Spirit Shirt in your specific size.

Staff RecognitionJen Abdoney

T hanks to all of the volunteers who donated amazing baked goods and dinner, the staff was able to enjoy a fabulous dinner before a long

night of conferences on September 26th. If you are interested in helping with food donations for the next conference night please contact me at [email protected]. The PTSA would also like to thank all of the Randall Bus Drivers and Lunchroom Staff for all their hard work and dedication.

tudents had a blast using their Hawk Bucks to purchase items at the first Hawk Store held in Sep-

tember. The new schedule has been finalized and the Hawk Store purchase days will now take place every other Wednesday and the times will be staggered between Wednesday morning before school and Wednesday during lunch. Fun Fridays will continue to be every other Friday. All of these dates of course will work around this year’s school schedule and other school events.

Parents, in order to continue to provide the Hawk Store incentive to our students we need your volunteer help. The Hawk Store is one of the eas-iest volunteer opportunities available to parents and a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Randall community. As a Hawk Store volunteer, you simply choose available dates and times that fit into your schedule and sign up. Upon arrival, sign into the school at the front office and proceed to either the cafeteria or courtyard depending on the day you choose. Then you simply help the students exchange their Hawk Bucks for fun items like candy, toys and school supplies. Also, you can choose to help on Fun Fridays which are days that the students can use their Hawk Bucks to purchase snow cones and popcorn. To register to volunteer, click on the Volunteer Spot link on the Randall website or going to www.volunteerspot.com. This is a free service. If however you do not want to register through Volunteer Spot, you can sign up by emailing Cynthia Atkins at [email protected] or calling 813-629-1124.

The Hawk Store encourages students to demon-strate hard work and great behavior during their school day in order to earn more Hawk Bucks. Hawk Store Volunteers get to meet other Randall parent volunteers and make new friends. Plus, special extra Hawk Buck incentives will be given to students whose parents donate volunteer hours. We must have parent support in order to keep this great pro-gram going so please take a moment to work a few hours into your schedule so that you can come a be a part of this fun event.

Reflections ContestKathy McAdam

eflections is America’s oldest and largest arts education program of its kind. It en-courages students to explore their talents

and express themselves through six arts areas:

• Dance choreography• Film production• Literature• Musical composition• Photography• Visual arts

This year’s theme is “Believe, Dream & Inspire.”

In 2012, the Special Artist Division emerged as an optional division for students, whose phys-ical, cognitive or other challenges meet ADA guidelines.

Encourage your student to participate in this

amazing contest. If your student succeeds at the school level competiton, his or her entry will move on to the County level competition. Success at this level then allows the entry to move to the state and potentially the national level.

Randall has shown excellence in prior years’ con-tests and looks forward to showing its’ best and brightest again this year! For more information on entry rules, visit the webpage, www.randallptsa.org, and follow the link on the left to Reflections where you can find answers to your questions, or contact Kathy McAdam, [email protected].

The deadline to enter is October 9, 2013.

hank you for your amazing participation in the PTSA’s second Spirit Night at Jake’s Wayback Burgers. Attendance was so impressive and

engaging that the RMS staff came out and served the students! As a result, the school earned $280 from this spirit night and Mrs. Tucy’s Homeroom class had highest participation earning a free junior shake. Way to go Hawks!

Our next Spirit Night is at Buffalo Wild Wings. The one huge request for this spirit night is that they require the spirit night coupon be given upon ordering for the school to get credit. This coupon will be loaded on the Randall Parent Facebook page as well as the Randall PTSA FB page. Mrs. Johnson will send it out in an email blast for you to

print as well. Thanks for supporting our new local business this month and we look forward to a great Spirit Night at Buffalo Wild Wings next month.
