Is There More to Summer Than the Pool?
Have you been wondering how your teen is going to fill his or her time
this summer aside from the pool, hanging out with friends, and the beach or
lake? Listed below are some ideas for valuable summer experiences that will
look great on a college application and resume, as well as provide valuable
experience and skills to your child:
1) Employment: A summer job can provide a multitude of valuable skills
and vales as well as demonstrate maturity. Through employment, a student
can demonstrate responsibility, commitment, dedication, and teamwork. They
can also gain experience and skills and financial responsibility.
2) Job Shadowing/Internships : This type of opportunity can be paid or
unpaid. These experiences are a great way to get hands-on experience and
explore careers. Teens can gain valuable insights into their fields of interest
while also building their resumes.
3) Summer Programs : Whether it is summer camp or an experience on a
college campus, a summer program can provide high school students a chance
to be independent, responsible, and an opportunity to make new friends. If
the program is on a college campus, they can also get a feel for campus life.
4) Community Service: There are not enough positive comments I can
make about the value of volunteering! I encourage all of my students to do this
throughout their time at HHS. Volunteering can empower a teen once they see
that they can make a difference. Community service can also increase self-
esteem, responsibility, team working skills, empathy, commitment, and I could
go on and on. Make sure your child keeps track of their volunteer hours. I
have forms in my office that they can use.
There is nothing wrong with some rest and relaxation once school is out, but
there is plenty of time for other activities that are structured, build character,
responsibility, and also can give a boost to a college or scholarship applications
and resumes.
-Nancy Wolfe
FYI for all students taking AP US History in
the 2012-13 school year. For the first time
there are a set required summer assignments
from the American Pageant text. Students
will need to be prepared to turn in the
packet of completed assignments the first
week of school with anticipation of a unit
exam within the first two weeks of school.
FYI Honors 9 Summer Reading:
TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
If your student is participating in the
summer workshop, TO KILL A
MOCKINGBIRD is a required read for
participation.
Spring
2012
From Principal Leslie Esneault
Another wonderful and memorable year at Huntsville High School has come to an end. It doesn’t seem possible that summer is
here; the school year went by so quickly! Our faculty, staff and student body worked hard all year, and we are looking forward to
some time off to spend with family, relax and travel. I hope that everyone enjoys the summer break.
I extend my sincere appreciation to everyone for making the 2011-2012 year so successful for our students and teachers.
Congratulations to the faculty, staff, students and community for making HHS one the “Best High Schools” in US News and World
Report. HHS ranked seventh in the top high schools in Alabama and was awarded a Silver Medal. The faculty and staff are greatly
appreciative of the generous contributions of our parents and community. Even with the budget cuts, our teachers were able to
continue to provide outstanding quality instruction that is expected from Huntsville High School. Your donations most certainly
made a significant difference!
Students, I hope that you enjoy your time off, but manage it well so it doesn’t get away from you. Plan to give some of your time
back to your community by volunteering to help others. Service learning is becoming more and more expected on college
admission applications. More importantly, those who volunteer usually benefit from the experience in life-changing ways. Also,
make time for your required summer reading!!
It is critical that students adhere to the dates and deadlines for any changes to course requests, PTSA summer workshops, team
tryouts and clinics. In order to make a change to a course request, a parent must submit the request in writing by June 15, 2012 for
consideration. This newsletter serves as a handy reference for important information.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE HHS CLASS OF 2012!!! You’ve been an amazing senior class, and we are all very proud of your
accomplishments. I wish each of the very best as you graduate and go your separate ways to experience the next phase of your life.
As Huntsville High School alumni, you are now part of a very rich legacy of tradition. Be proud!!
Huntsville High School also wishes to congratulate Mrs. Leigh Brown, Huntsville High School Teacher of the Year. In addition, Mrs.
Brown and Coach Scott Sharp were also recognized as All-American Teachers of the Year by NMSI (National Math and Science
Institute) for having some of the highest Advanced Placement qualifying scores in the nation. They will be honored in Washington,
D.C. in May for this very important award. Congratulations also to Mrs. Chanda Davis who was a finalist for the 2011 Science
Presidential Award by the Alabama State Board of Education and the Alabama Department of Education!!!!
I would like to thank Mrs. Lisa Miller, PTSA President, and her wonderful PTSA Board for all of their dedication and commitment.
The committees continue to provide outstanding programs and opportunities for our teachers and students. In cooperation with
the Student Council, Senior and Junior Class Officers, the PTSA was instrumental in providing our students with Alcohol EDU, an
online alcohol prevention and abstinence program. Students who attended prom were required to complete the online education
component prior to purchasing a ticket. Our students also participated in Prom Promise once again. Nearly 500 students pledged
not to drink or use drugs on prom night. PROM WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!! Thank you to the many chaperones, Mr. Buddy Moon and
the Junior Class for such a memorable evening!! Our faculty is also grateful to the Hospitality Committee who provides such
delicious meals and treats to our teachers and staff. All of the committees work so hard to give our students and staff the very
best! THANK YOU!!
Finally, as most of you are aware, I have been asked to coordinate the curriculum and implementation of the Freshman Academies
across the HCS system next year. The past fourteen years at HHS have been the most rewarding and incredible years of my career.
I have been blessed to work alongside the brightest and the best!!! I have formed special friendships with teachers and parents
that will last a lifetime. As always, I am indebted to the exceptional faculty and staff who are the reason Huntsville High School
continues to be recognized for its outstanding student achievement and success. I know that Huntsville High School will continue
its tradition of excellence!! I am so proud to have called Huntsville High School my school!
Best wishes for an amazing summer!! If there is any way that I can be of assistance to you or your student, please don’t
hesitate to contact me. 2
President’s Letter, Lisa Miller
As our 2011-2012 school year comes to an end, I write you with great gratitude for your service and involvement at HHS and
with your PTSA. It has been my honor to serve as your President this year. I am thankful for all that we have accomplished
together and I look forward to the ongoing work we will all do to empower and equip the young people of Huntsville High
School to be a force in shaping our future and making our world a better place.
Thank you to all who have served and contributed to PTSA this year! It is not possible to list everything you have done, but we
could not help our school without each one of you and the service you have provided. Many thanks to our wonderful PTSA
Officers, Committee Chairs and Board for your hard work. HHS PTSA received several awards this year. From our local council,
the Huntsville Council of PTAs, HHS PTSA received the following Family-School Partnership awards: Welcoming All Families,
Supporting Student Success, and Sharing Power. From the Alabama PTA, we received the Welcoming All Families Award and
four membership awards: Outstanding Membership, Largest Division, Largest PTA and ‘Big Topper’. Thank you to our Awards
Committee and Nancy Farris, Chair, for sharing our accomplishments and thank you to all the Committees who made these
awards possible.
In addition to the outstanding work from all Committees, thanks go to PTSA Student Activities Committee and Karen
Kimbrough as Chair, for a successful reorganization of the Inter Club Council (ICC). The ICC is working to increase
communication among the clubs and school organizations and to call upon student leaders to help PTSA better respond to
student interests and needs. Over thirty groups have been represented at these meetings! PTSA Health and Safety Committee
and our entire PTSA plus HHS Administration, Student Council and Junior and Senior Class Officers worked together to bring
more awareness to the topic and behaviors surrounding underage drinking in our student population and our community. As
part of this effort, we tried something new, an online course called AlcoholEdu for High School Students. Included was a free
parent education course we shared with our entire city. HHS Summer Workshops are back again by popular demand! These
workshops provide great opportunities to help your students prepare for next year’s classes as well as improve study and
test-taking skills. There’s a new workshop this year called ‘Surviving an Audition’ presented by our own Mr. Chappell.
HHS has been recognized as one of the best high schools by US News and World Report! Our tradition of excellence extends
from our Administration, Faculty and Staff to our Students, Parents and Community. Special thanks to our teachers,
counselors, support staff and administrators for your excellent work!
From HHS PTSA, I offer congratulations and wishes for all the best to the Class of 2012 and their families! We will hold you in
our thoughts as you move beyond HHS and continue to make your contributions to our community and our world. May you
enjoy happiness and much success always.
As you know, our Principal, Mrs. Leslie Esneault, will begin an exciting new phase of her career with our city schools as she
steps up to serve as Coordinator of Freshman Academies. Mrs. Esneault, you will be missed! Thank you for your excellence,
dedication and devotion to HHS over the past fourteen years. We wish you all the best and it’s good to know that you will still
be close by.
We need your talents and service to keep HHS PTSA strong, so please consider working with PTSA in the coming year.
Remember to use your Publix cards over the summer and have a safe and happy break!
With Gratitude,
Lisa Miller
President, HHS PTSA

Huntsville High School
Technology Committee
The Huntsville High School PTSA
Technology Committee is excited
to be a part of the Huntsville City
Schools technology
transformation. Dr. Wardynski
presented Huntsville City
Schools’s new technology
approach at the State of the
Schools 2012 Address. While it
is predicted we will be an E-book
nation by 2017, Dr. Wardynski
feels our school system will be
there much sooner. Our current
school system has approximately
10,000 computers, 8,000 which
are obsolete, and Huntsville City
School’s new goal is to provide a
computer for every student and
teacher.
This fall all Huntsville City
Schools will be wireless and
inter-connected. Students will
be able to bring their own
devices and log on to the system
as guests. All 9th graders will
receive laptops and every
teacher an I-Pad/Tablet.
Everyone can look forward to
improved operating efficiencies
with document sharing, off-site
servers, and new websites to
facilitate a paperless
environment. The Huntsville
High School Technology
Committee looks forward to
being a part of these new and
exciting technology changes.

“Diversity Means…” Reflections 2011-2012
Senior Kristina McGroary is going to National competition for
Reflections!!! Her entry “Waterborne” placed 1st in the state of
Alabama in visual arts, recognized at an awards ceremony in
Mobile on April 28. Her entry has been forwarded to the
national competition, to be awarded at the 116th Annual
National PTA Convention and Exhibition in June 2012 in San Jose,
CA. We know that Kristina and her work will represent Huntsville
High School well! “Diversity Means...” was the 2011 Reflections
theme.
HHS students Kristina McGroary and Tiffany Hnetynka were 1st
place winners in Huntsville City in the respective areas of visual
arts and photography. Jacqueline Heard and Sarah Barr received
honorable mentions in literature and visual arts. Our four
students were recognized during a special ceremony at the
Academy for Academics and Arts on Thursday, January 26.
Please mark your summer calendars for July 10. You are invited
to a kickoff reception featuring 2011 and 2012 Reflecti ons
winners at the Huntsville Art League on L&N Drive. Please drop
by between 5 and 8pm to enjoy Huntsville High’s artists and their
works. The HAL gallery will feature our students the entire
month of July. We are very proud of our Huntsville High School
students!
The PTA® Reflections Program is designed to enhance rather than
replace a quality arts education. It provides opportunities for
students to express themselves and to receive positive
recognition for their artistic efforts. It is an annual program
where students in preschool through grade 12 create and submit
works of art in six areas: dance choreography, film production,
literature, musical composition, photography, and the visual arts.
Next year’s theme is “The Magic of a Moment…” so, students,
please get started this summer. See
http://www.ptareflections.org/cs/rules_and_documents for
guidelines. Contact Beverly Ellison, 533-3411,
[email protected] for questions.
Visual Arts
Waterborne
By Kristina McGroary, 12th grade
Artist Statement: "Waterbome" is the title of my work. This
title is meant to connect the medium of my work, watercolor,
with the idea that all people, no matter how different or
where they are from, share water as an important and
essential part of our daily lives. That is, we all share certain
basic similarities that make us more "together" than apart.
The work I've done symbolizes the many different aspects of
the human race, and that each contributes to the family of
man of which we are all a part. This diversity within the
family has allowed mankind to come together and create
such great things throughout history.
The primary element of my work is a portrait depicting four
women. Each aspect is from a different culture; Asian,
African, Indian and Native American. The four are
portrayed together as a single person, and their colors
flow down to the bottom of the work to join together in a
pool of watercolor. Water is a traditional symbol of life. It is
used by many religions, from Christian baptism to the ritual
bathing of the dead with pure water in Judaism and Islam.
Water is the one element necessary for life, and we now
search the heavens for water bearing planets.
10
Photography
Dogversity
By Tiffany Hnetynka, 9th grade
Artist Statement: My dogs couldn't be more diverse. One
is black, one is white. One is a girl, one is a boy. One is
smooth, one is furry. One is yappy, one is quiet. One is
naughty, one is nice. But they are best friends.
Visual Arts
Diversity Is… Unity
By Sarah Barr, 12th grade, 2012
Artist Statement: The different races of the world
must work together to keep peace and unity, so
they must act as one community, one being.
Literature
The Great Autumn Tree
By Jacqueline Heard, 12th grade, 2012
Artist Statement: My poem relates to the theme “Diversity means..."
because it is a comparison between an autumn tree's different
colored leaves and the different colored people in the world.
Although people's appearances are different, they play an important
role in the same world, or as in the poem, the same tree.

The highlight of the year was the international trip to Spain! During spring break, nearly 90 band students and chaperones
traveled to Spain for a 9-day trip, visiting Segovia, Avila, Toledo, Madrid, Valencia, and Barcelona. The band performed five
concerts during the trip, with performances in Segovia, Aranjuaz (near Madrid), Valencia, Tarrassa (near Barcelona), and an
outdoor concert on the plaza in Algete. During these concerts, the band had the pleasure of performing with three Spanish
bands. During the trip, the students experienced traditional Spanish cuisine, discovered the architecture of Gaudi, walked
under a Roman aqueduct in Segovia, explored the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, and swam in the Mediterranean. It was
a truly unforgettable experience!
The band would like to thank everyone who supported the band fundraisers throughout the year.
Your support helped the band raise funds to support all aspects of our music program, including
competition music fees, instrument purchases, repair, and maintenance, as well as fee scholarships

HHS AFJROTC
Spring 2012
Through out the year, both the P.T. team and the Drill
team have several competitions. The latest joint meet was
on February 23, 2012 at Johnson High School. This
competition included about thirteen teams from all
around North Alabama and some from Tennessee. Both
the P.T team and the Drill team were very successful. The
Drill Team walked away with five trophies including one
for overall second place. The P.T. team placed second in
the athletic competition
Though Huntsville High’s JROTC is constantly busy, the end
of the school year is the busiest. March 19 was the 2012
annual military ball, one of the most looked forward to
events of the entire year in AFJROTC. After Christmas, two
juniors are chosen as Mr. and Ms. Vice (this year, Chelsie
Crossen and Hayden Fry!). it takes a TON of work to get
Military Ball rolling. Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors
can all be on committees like Decorations, Seating, and
other stuff. The actual night is formal and starts out with a
receiving line that everyone goes through after walking
underneath a saber arch. The formal ceremony starts
begins with toasts and little speeches, and then dinner
starts! After dinner, the fun parts of the ceremony start.
First are senior sillies. These are “special” gag type gifts
given to all the seniors that represent something they are
known for. Around 11, the dance starts winding down. But
even though the night may be ending you’ll have some
awesome memories to hold you over until next year’s
military ball.
On April 6th, the PT team went to the
Marine Corps Mud Run at Auburn.
While there, they visited the Air Force
ROTC detachment and listened to a
presentation from the Auburn cadets.
Later they where taken on a campus
tour. The next morning they got up
bright and early for the mud run. At the
mud run they saw one of our former
HHS cadets, Andrew Fry, who was
running the race with his team from
Marion Military College. The cadets
who went to the mud run said they
were pretty exhausted and covered in

For the first time, in a couple of years,
Huntsville High JROTC met with Butler High’s
JROTC and for a field event called Eagle Day.
The turnout was great! Everyone seemed to
enjoy it. We began at 9am setting up for the
event and at 10 we had the welcoming
ceremony. During the day we had various
sports competitions, such as: volleyball,
combat volleyball, basketball, and war ball. In
between the sports we had a lunch that was
supplied by the cadets. Finally at the end of the
day we had the long awaited drill competition.
The winner was one of our cadets, Catherine
Peterson! When the day got to an end, nobody
wanted to go. Eagle day was a great day for
everyone!
Summer 2012
The 2011-2012 school year is quickly coming to an end, and
our JROTC Summer activities are just beginning. One of our
major summer events is JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge at
Fort McClellan near Anniston, Alabama. This is an optional
event that many of our cadets look forward to all year long.
Fort McClelland is a joint-service JROTC Summer camp with
challenging military skills activities. During this week-long
camp, cadets wake up at five every morning to do morning PT
(Physical Training) as a group. The training days consist of
several leadership reaction courses and team building
exercises. The days ultimately end with a competition
between teams in games such as volleyball, basketball, flag
football, and broom hockey. The last two days of Fort
McClelland consist of a PT test, a drill competition and field
games. This camp fills up very quickly and is definitely worth
the wait.
HHS returning cadets will host the incoming freshmen cadets
at a 6-10 Aug ROTC Orientation Week. New cadets will meet
the cadet staff, make new friends, learn basic military skills
and get a head start on their first promotion. For information
call 256-428-8061.
The first JROTC event of the 2012-2013
school year is the 24-25 Aug Corps outing at
Camp Maranatha. There cadets will
participate in team building events like
repelling, high ropes, canoeing, and military
skills.
Cadets will also be welcoming a new JROTC
instructor, SMSGT Julie Dollar, who will
replace CMSGT Daniel who is retiring this
year. SMSGT Dollar comes to HHS from her
last assignment in Washington D.C.
On 10 Sep, HHS JROTC will be visited by an IG
inspector from AFJROTC Headquarters at
Maxwell AFB. This inspection, normally
conducted every three years, will be our first
since 2008, due to the Corps previous back-
to-back “Distinguished Unit” ratings.
We would like to offer a huge
Thank You! To Janet Robbins for sponsoring the HHS Newsletter this year!
