PASTOR INTRODUCTION As most of you know we have hired an interim pastor. He will be starting work next week. He will be recording the Sunday service for October 18th and will be in the office starting next week. After he arrives we will notify everyone what his office hours will be. Please be sure to watch his introduction on YouTube at our HSCC 10 04 2020 Sunday Service.

Meet our new Interim Pastor—Rev. Joe Schulte.

I have been many places and done many things since leaving Hammond Street Church,

but I'm excited about returning as your interim Senior Pastor. We will work together to pre-pare you for the person God is preparing to be your next called and settled Senior Pastor.

We welcome Beth and Joe back to Maine and the HSCC family and looking forward

to having Joe guide us through this next “spiritual journey” in finding HSCC a new Senior Pastor.

JOSEPH'S HOS-PITAL PROGRAM Thank you to all who participated or donated to the recent Commit to be Fit Virtual Road race hosted by St. Joseph's Hospital. This was the second year this race was held to benefit victims of sexual and domestic abuse in the Greater Ban-gor Area. I am so pleased to report that over $82,000 was raised to fund and assist those in need. Considering this was a virtual event, that is incredible! Thank you, thank you to sponsors and donors !!! Lynda and I did our 5k out at City For-est, walking that is. Lynda & Brad Ryder REMINDER Please remember when you are leaving church—make sure all lights are off, interior doors are closed and double check the outside door after you close it to make sure that it is locked and se-cure. There have been several instances that lights have been left on, interior doors open and the back door left unlocked. Thank you for your help in keeping our church safe and secure. STEWARDSHIP When Lori Spencer first asked me to join Stewardship,

I didn’t feel up to the call. I only work a part-time job

and didn’t feel I could offer that much to the commit-

tee. Since then, I have participated in discussions, of-

fered prayer, and also sent my video of

“Amazing Grace” to the committee.

That is where I most feel I can most serve this

church-and give my greatest offering-my voice.

When I was in the hospital, I had a nightmare I was

trapped and couldn’t escape. Then, I sang this song,

was okay and woke up.

This song brought me peace as it does for others. This

was in the service a few weeks ago. May it bring you

peace and grace.

HOLIDAY FAIR: Holiday Fair planning is still underway. The committee will be meeting next week to pull all of our ideas together. The fair is scheduled for November 14th. We realize that this year’s fair may look a little different than past years to assure we are following all the State and CDC guidelines to keep everyone safe. So this will definitely take a some extra ideas to make it work. If anyone has any ideas that they would like to share please send them to the church office. Thank you!!!! More news to follow. NEWS FROM FOOD AND MEDICINE This year’s Solidarity Harvest Volunteers needed. They are in need of:1. enclosed trailers (toy hauler type) 2. Trucks/pickup, and drivers to do farm pickup and deliveries of produce in the few weeks leading up to the Harvest and during Sort Week. 3. Good wooden pallets This will allow for safe pick up, transport, sort and store all the incredible amounts of produce they plan on get-ting from this year’s awesome farmers. You can help by making a donation—Sponsor a Meal for $40 to provide a locally-sourced, healthful Thanks-giving meal to Mainers in hard times. You can make a secure online donation by going to the Food and Medi-cine website, or mail a check to: Food and Medicine, 20 Ivers Street, Brewer, Maine 04412 If you can help with any of these requests, call 207-989-5860 or send an email to [email protected]. Thank you SO much in advance! Solidarity Harvest isn’t possible without you, and the rest of our incredible community. We look forward to announcing volunteer shifts, and more ways for you to get involved and help us pull off this massive project. The Food and Medicine Board FYI—this Solidarity Harvest is the mode by which the food cupboard obtains all of the items to make Thanks-giving baskets for clients. Our condolences to Jane Haskell on the passing of her mom. Anyone who would like her address please call the office. Thank you

BOSTON MARATHON JIMMY FUND WALK 2020

Thank you for supporting Dana-Farber Cancer Institute

Thank you to all the Hammond Streeters who supported my participation in the Jimmy Fund Walk. With your help

I raised over $1,500 for cancer research and treat-ment. In addition to the donations, I really appreciate

your good wishes and the names of loved ones you gave me to carry to remember, honor and celebrate.

My friend Joanne and I did our Jimmy Fund Walk in Maine this year; we walked approximately 13 miles

around the Schoodic Peninsula –half the day in sun and

half in light rain and fog. We had a wonderful day.

THE DOTY-WOODWARD COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD In honor of two board members who truly exemplified the spirit of service—and whose life work benefited the community in permanent ways—Penobscot Community Health Care has created an annual award that will bear their names. The Doty-Woodward Community Service award will honor Rev. Mark Doty and Mark Woodward, now both retired, and be given to a community member who demonstrates exceptional community service. The PCHC Board announced the award this week. “It is in recognition of those who demonstrate through their work and in their lives, empathy and compassion for the most vulnerable and who effect positive change to make a permanent difference in the world,” said President and CEO Lori Dwyer. “As a community health center, our role is as a resource, and this award recognizes those whose work goes above and beyond in our mission to serve. It also honors two men who embodied that spirit.” Doty, longtime pastor of the Hammond Street UCC Church and deeply involved in local projects, causes, and organizations, was a PCHC board member for 10 years. He was a champion for diversity and inclusivity in the community and served on the board of Equality Maine. Woodward, a PCHC board member for nine years and most recently chairman, was a 38-year veteran of the Bangor Daily News, where he spent 12 years as executive editor. He was also a president of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce and a member of the board of the Discovery Museum; he helped bring the National Folk Festival to Bangor and created an informal group on school safety. The first award will be announced at PCHC’s annual meeting in April 2021.
