EDITORIAL

This issue begins volume 2 of our HALESfamily Newsletter. With your help we canmake it an even bigger success than volume 1has been. Please remember that this is an active family organization.

Many things are happening at the sametime: Our Hales Book is building rapidly; Ourresearcher in England has been asked toincrease the time each month that he will beworking for us; and we will be holding familyreunions this year at four locations across thecountry.

Please remember to fill out your familysheet and mail it to me for our book. Also, this is the year to write a short story about youand your family for our book. (Include in thisshort history the information about yourancestors: parents, grandparents, or as much asyou can remember).

Please be one of the people that do things– if you don't send the information to me itprobably won’t get done and get into ourHales book. Lets leave a first hand story aboutus for our posterity.

The HALES Newsletter this year will bepublished on a quarterly basis. This is done forseveral reasons – increases in postal rates andmaterials have affected us somewhat and inorder to keep the cost of the Newsletter at thesame price an adjustment is necessary. TheResearchers fees have also been increasedslightly. The same quantity of information canbe mailed out quarterly as before at a savingsof nearly $100.00 per year. Please let me knowyour feelings about this adjustment.

For those of you that have not alreadydone so, your yearly dues to assist our Societyin this project is now due. The amountrequested is minimal and helps this effortgreatly.

Orders are now being accepted for an 8"by 10" color rendition of our Hales familycoat-of-arms. The process used for thisreproduction is by offset press. The

reproduction is an enlarged reproduction incolor of the arms on the cover of thisnewsletter.

While coat-of-arms cannot be legallydisplayed except by the owner in manyEuropean countries, in America we feel ithonors our family name. We display it tohonor our ancestors.

The rendition may be displayed in an 8" by10" picture frame larger. The cost of thisrendition is $2. postpaid.

CONTRIBUTIONS

One advantage of having a central location forsending information concerning the Halesfamily is that a more complete record can becompiled from the bits of data sent from manyplaces – an example of this follows.

The following information was received fromSadie Hales Johnson.

I found this Hales family informationwhen I visited the New York HistoricalSociety when I visited there a few years ago:

From:1. Early Records of Simpson Families, by

Helen A. Simpson, published 1927-1929,pages 316-317.

2. From History of the Upper Ohio Valley,Upton, Taylor, Brand, and Fuller,Madison, Wisconsin, 1890.

From Simpson History:Hugh Hales of Jefferson County, Ohio, whosewill is dated October 10, 1812, and attestedApril 7, 1817, is quite likely the father ofJohn, but as he wills all to his wife, Jemima, during the time she is a widow, and afterwardsis to be equally divided between my heirs, there is no record of his children's names. Awitness is David Sloane, probably the same asD. Sloane for John’s will, who did not appearwhen will is attested and whose own willreads, "Done in Knoxville 18 August 1850.”(Note: The above relationship of Hugh to Johnis a supposition. The information receivedfrom another source links Hugh to John asbrothers).

John Hales of Jefferson County, Ohio, madehis will on file at Steuvenville, April 29th,1839, two years after the death of his wife,Jane (1857-1837) and six years after the deathof his son, Hugh, husband of Jane Simpson. His bequests are:To my granddaughter, Jane Swinehart. To my grandson, John Milligan. To my granddaughter, Polly Jackman Adams. To my granddaughter, Betsy Mansfield

Thomas. To my son, William Hales. To the heirs of my son, John Hales, deceased. To the heirs of my son, Hugh Hales, deceased

(who married Jane Simpson)To my son, Andrew Hales. To my son, Robert Hales.

To my son, Moses Hales. To my granddaughter, Martha Maxwell, to

wit, daughter of my granddaughter, JaneSwinehart.

Executors: my son, William Hales ofPennsylvania and Thomas Mansfield, myson-in-law.

Witnesses: James Alexander, D. Sloane, JohnMartin.

From History of Upper Ohio Valley:Andrew Hales, Sr., born in Pennsylvania, came to Ohio in a very early day and settlednear Richmond, Jefferson County, died about1866. His son, Andrew. Jr., born nearRichmond, spent early manhood teachingcommon branches and music. He married,1851, Nancy Hout, daughter of Peter, earlyresident of this county. In 1852 heaccompanied some neighbors to California, where he died same year. Their son, GeorgeA. Hales, born May, 1852, was educated atRichmond College, entered lumber business, became successful and prosperous at Torontonear Steubenville, married 1878, AliceFleming, three daughters.

Elisha Hales of Salem Township, JeffersonCounty, in will dated June 21, 1841,attested September 27, 1841, wills his farm onwhich he lives to his nephew, ThomasMetcalf, and the remainder of his property tobe divided “amongst my brothers andsisters." His brothers may include John above, and they will all be sons of Hugh.

Witness: Adam Stewart, who also is witnessof John Simpson's Will.

Mary Hales is certainly his sister, for she willsto her nephew Thomas Metcalf; alsoto her sisters Sarah Maitland and HenriettaSpencer. Dated March 15, 1862, attested .1865.

The son, Andrew Hales, mentioned in the willof John, is probably the Andrew married toHannah, whose daughter "Hannah Rebecca",died 1810 aged five years and is buried nearJohn and Jane Hales in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. The family of this Andrew Hales, who wasfather-in-law of Nancy Hout, as named in hiswill, 1866, on file at Steubenville; to wife,Mary, real estate in Richmond; eldestson, James; 2nd son, John; 3rd son, William;4th son, Andrew; daughter, Mary Taylor;daughter, Isabelle Hales; daughter, ElizabethWilson; son, Thomas C.; son Samuel B.;Son, Alexander Lewis; daughter, MargaretJane.

Hugh Hales married Jane Simpson 1813 (hewas born September 10, 1791, in WashingtonCounty, Pennsylvania, which later becamepart of Beaver County, Pennsylvania), hedied April 14, 1833, in Richland County,Ohio.

He came with his parents, John Hales andJane, to Ohio at the age of eight or ten. In theMount Tabor Cemetery, in the far corner tothe left from the Simpson lot, are two finebrown tombstones similar to those of ourancestors, which mark the graves of HughHales' parents and other relatives. The first "InMemory of Jane, consort of John Hales, whodeparted this life June 11, 1837, 80 years ofage." Next it is a stone in memory of JohnHales, the dates of which unfortunately I didnot copy, but I find his will at Steubenvillewas made April 29, 1839, two years after thedeath of his wife, and six years after the deathof his son, Hugh. Beyond is a tablet inmemory of Hannah Rebecca, daughter ofAndrew and Hannah Hales, died 1810, agedfive years.

There is also a monument to Hales inUnited Presbyterian Cemetery at Richmond, ofwhich records I took no copy. As it is next tothe Hout monument, it is probably of our kin.
