New  York  City  Economic Development  Day  (EDD)  is  an

annual  regional  event  of  The

Greater  Harlem  Chamber  of 

Commerce  (GHCC)  hosted  byChamber  member, ColumbiaUniversity.  Each EDD event has

its own unique theme.  The 2011

theme was “The Economic State

of  our  City  -  “Tolerance”  Post

9/11”.  

The  EDD  Conferences  are 

always  timely  and  topical.   The9/11  Tolerance  Conferencefocused  on  building  bridges 

between diverse cultures.  During

the Business Health Conferencespecial recognition was given to

the 9/11 First Responders.  Both 

conferences had capacity attendance. 

The  Indoor  Business  Expo  Jobs  & Career  Fair  attracted  thousands  of 

attendees and the Outdoor “Healthy Eating”  Farmers  Market was  equally

well attended.

The  AnnualAwards Luncheon was filled

to capacity.  Over 400 persons came to

hear  remarks from our 

distinguished  speakers,  as  well  as  to 

recognize  the  special  honorees.    Past

honorees have included Banker, DavidRockefeller, MayorMichael Bloomberg, media mogul, Oprah Winfrey, NYS Governor George Pataki, Congressman Charles Rangel, 

U.S.  Ambassador  Suzan  Johnson, Columbia  University  President,  LeeBollinger,  former  President,  WilliamClinton, publishers John Johnson andRupert Murdoch to name a few.  

Each  year  In  support  of  GHCC’s 

educational  initiatives,  scholarships,

grants, and internships were awarded to

over  twenty  deserving  students  and 

interns at the Luncheon.

The  Greater  Harlem  Chamber  of  Commerce leads  or  partners  with  major 

community development projects that have or will  become catalysts for the growth

and development of Upper Manhattan.

Greater  Harlem  Housing  Development  Corporation  (GHHDC), the  Chamber’s   

development subsidiary,  in concert with the NY City Planning Commission and the

Office of  the Mayor,  created  the Striver’s Center Development project,  an urban 

renewal initiative that extends from West 130th St. to West 141th St., from 5th Ave.

to St. Nicholas Ave.  This targeted area includes the award winning “Striver’s Gardens“

mixed-use residential and retail condominiums. 

Some of the other key development initiatives which GHCC actively supports include:

the   redevelopment of the Harlem Hospital Center; Columbia University’s Manhattanville Project;  construction of the National Jazz Museum

in Harlem; completion of the A. C. Powell, Jr. State Office Building Plaza; the continued revitalization of 125th Street lead by the 125th St.

Business Improvement District; new construction projects at The City College of New York;  development of the Victoria Complex (hotel, 

cultural, residential);  The Clara Hale MTA Bus Depot; and we all wait with great anticipation for the grand opening of the Museum for African Art.

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce (GHCC) aggressively maintains a continuous

commitment to Education on all levels of the spectrum from Pubic Schools to Post-Graduate

Degrees.

Over the past two decades,  GHCC has directly awarded in excess of three million dollars in

scholarships and internships to students attending colleges and universities throughout the

country and beyond. GHCC and  its members have also presented hundreds of grants  to 

educational and training institutions throughout the New York region.

In addition to providing scholarships, internships and grants, GHCC also annually identifies

and salutes outstanding teachers and educators.  We also promote and encourage attending

colleges and  universities by producing the annual National Historic Black College Fair and

Expo each summer during HARLEM WEEK.

Healthy  Living  &  Healthy  Eating is  a  year  round  initiative  of  The  Greater  Harlem  Chamber  of 

Commerce (GHCC). The GHCC Health Committee in partnership with its member hospitals, health plans,

HMO’s, health professionals, educational institutions, media partners, food service providers, recreational 

facilities, senior centers, elected officials, government agencies and the City of New York have created a year

round “Healthy Eating & Healthy Living” campaign to help the residents, families, students, workers and busi-

nesses located in Upper Manhattan to live healthier and more productive lives.  

GHCC recognizes the major positive economic impact on our businesses when its customer base and employees

are healthy.  The Health Committee of GHCC is comprised of doctors,health practitioners, educators, hospitals,

educational institutions, HMO’s, health service providers and professional health service organizations.  

Among its many accomplishments the Health Committee of GHCC createdThe National Urban Health Con-

ference held annually in February; launched International Wellness Week in August in conjunction with The

New  York Academy of Medicine and theWorld Health Organization; annually hosts thePercy Sutton Harlem

5K Run and the NYC Family Health Walk; and supports the NYS Office of General Services twice weekly,

spring, summer & fall Farmers Market (featuring fresh fruits, vegetables, produce, herbs, baked goods, etc.)

The  Greater  HarlemChamber  of  Commerce(GHCC) places the arts andculture of our communitiesat the top of its priorities.The Arts and Culture com-mittee  of  the  GHCC  hasformed a lead partnershiprole with Harlem Arts Alliance  (HAA), the mainumbrella arts service organization.  This partnership has broughtabout  the  creation  andpresentation  of  multipleevents  highlighting  the

enormous contributions which arts and cultural organizations and artists are making to  improve thequality of life in our service area and beyond.

During Black History Month (February), the GHCC Artsand  Culture  Committee  hosts  a  theatrical  initiative entitled “Blacks on Broadway and Beyond” wherebyseveral  theatrical  personalities  and  institutions  are 

honored for their support of and contributions to arts,culture and theatre.  

Annually, during Women’s History Month (March), theGHCC  Arts  and  Culture  Committee  pays  tribute  to extraordinary women of music.   Past honorees have included Dionne Warwick, Gloria Lynn, Nancy Wilson,Phyllis Hyman, Patti Labelle, etc.  

Each year during HARLEM WEEK, in concert with theNational Black Sports & Entertainment Hall of Fame,the GHCC Arts and Culture Committee recognizes andinducts  music  greats  into  its  Hall  of  Fame.    Past honorees  have  included  Duke  Ellington,  Louis Armstrong, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Celia Cruz,Ella  Fitzgerald, Tito  Puente,  Stevie Wonder,  SaraVaughn, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Gil Scott-Heron, and Dave Valentin to name a few.

During HARLEM WEEK in July and August  the GHCCArts and Culture Committee  and HAA, in concert withNational Jazz Museum in Harlem, Jazzmobile,  ApolloTheatre, Museum for African Art, Manhattan Schoolof Music,  National Dance Institute,  Harlem Summer 

Stage, Dwyer Cultural Center, New Heritage Theatre,Harlem School of the Arts, Dance Theatre of Harlemand Studio Museum  in Harlem, Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone, Imagenation, NYC Departmentof Parks & Recreation,  the National Parks ServiceNYC Company and  others come together to market,promote and present an array of outstanding free cul-tural programs and activities which attract tens of thou-sands of spectators, visitors and residents.

“HARLEM  MARATHON  WEEK” is  The  Greater  Harlem  Chamber  of Commerce  (GHCC)  and  the New York  Road  Runners joint  initiative,  in partnership with  Harlem Arts Alliance, WBLS-FM, WLIB.AM, WHCR.FM,NY Amsterdam News, Harlem News Group, Daily News and The City College of New York.  New Yorkers and international visitors are invited tocome out and join with the marathoners and their guests from throughoutthe region, the nation and the world from the last Monday of October throughthe first Sunday of November,  to “DISCOVER OUR HARLEM.”

Harlem  Marathon Week’s seven  day  tribute  welcomes  and  salutes  theworld’s greatest marathon and features unique shopping, dining at speciallyselected Harlem restaurants, open houses at historic cultural and religious in-stitutions, and opportunities to experience the musical “Sounds of Harlem”at nightclubs and theatres.

The Chamber’s Health Committee proudly hosts the “HARLEM MILES” segment of the NYC Marathon on the first Sunday in November.    This 48block segment extends  from 138th St. & 5th Ave. to 96th St. & 5th Ave. andpromotes the Chamber’s  “Healthy Eating & Healthy Living” campaign totens of thousands.  

The  extraordinary  musical “Sounds of Harlem” are  captured  at  the  fivestages located along the “HARLEM MILES” route highlighting jazz, gospel,R&B, calypso, Latin, reggae, blues, dance, rock and hip hop.  The live musicis thoroughly enjoyed by audiences of tens of thousands of local, regional, national and international spectators.

The  increasing  global  nature  of  our  economy  presents  ever  greater opportunities for GHCC to leverage its strong international relationships to provide  our  members  and  associates  increased  access  to  a  world-wide marketplace. GHCC International Services Committee has, on behalf of theChamber’s Board of Directors, undertaken partnerships with South Africa andJapan to  encourage  tourism,  product  awareness,  “business-to-business” collaborations and international student exchanges. 

In addition to constantly exploring ways to do business across borders, GHCCalso supports worldwide humanitarian efforts where needed. In response tothe devastating natural disasters recently suffered by Haiti and Japan, GHCCand its partner organizations have lead, participated in and supported variousrelief efforts by raising awareness, and assisting in providing funds and otherdesperately needed supplies and materials.

In salute to the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 tragedies, GHCC, The MunicipalArt Society of New York and the Skyscraper Museum brought together a diverse group of national and  international  representatives  to meet at  the Sky Scraper Museum and  to  take  part  in  a  special  viewing  of  the  famous“Tribute in Light” at Ground Zero.

Each  year  the  GHCC  International  Services  Committee selects  two nations with which to partner and create business, education, trade and tourisminitiatives.  

The GHCC also supports and co-sponsors the annual Multi National BusinessConference which takes place in November of each year in the Caribbean orLatin America.

The Chamber and HARLEM WEEKannually join forces to offer an arrayof  opportunities  for  members,sponsors, residents and visitors toexperience multiple activities thathighlight  the  rich  cultural  and economic  vitality  of  our  mythiccommunties. 

The  Gracie  Mansion  private reception  is the kick-off event forHARLEM WEEK  hosted  by  MayorMichael Bloomberg. The programincludes  live  performances  by

Broadway Theater companies; allstar bands provide great live music;the  Mayor  presents  special proclamations,  GHCC  college scholarships  and  educationalgrants. The event also highlights a“Taste  of  Harlem”  with  foods provided  by  selected  Harlemrestaurants and bakeries.

During  HARLEM  WEEK,  GHCC produces  the  NYC  Economic Development Day in  partnershipwith Columbia University.

“A  Great  Day  in  Harlem”  takesplace annually on the last Sunday inJuly.    It  is  the  first  public  eventsponsored  by GHCC  for  HARLEMWEEK. Each year in excess of fortythousand attendees gather for a

day  of  family  activities  includingperformances by local art institutions.The  day  also  includes  a  nationalgospel  concert  hosted  by  WBLS-FM/WLIB-AM  as  well  as  interna-tional  fashion  shows  with  local,national and global designers andmodels. We conclude the day with

our  “Concert  Under  the  Stars.”This segment  is hosted by WBLS-FM with presentations by some ofthe  hottest  names  in  the  music industry.  Past  performers  includeTito Puente, Boys to Men, LionelHampton, Nancy Wilson, HaroldMelvin’s Bluenotes, EddiePalmieri, John Legend, EricBenet, Celia Cruz, Johnny Gil, andAshford & Simpson to name a few.

The NY City Senior Citizen’s Day “El-ders  Jubilee” is  the  day  duringHARLEM  WEEK  where  we  celebrateour seniors with an extraordinary dis-play  of  activities  including  and  expofeaturing health information; an exqui-site  luncheon;  award  presentations;and a grand fashion show. 

The free outdoor Health Village is apart  of  HARLEM  DAY  in  partnershipwith GHCC’s Health Committee. Majorhospitals,  health  service  providers,pharmaceutical companies, institutionsof  higher  learning  and  health  practi-tioners  offer  free  health  testing,  dis-semination  of  health  materials  andmedical advice. 

The Annual Upper Manhattan AutoShow attracts the newest of cars andvehicles,  hybrid/green  vehicles,  and

vintage  cars.    National  and  interna-tional auto manufacturers and dealershighlight their best buys. The day be-gins with a parade of vehicles through-out historic Harlem.

“Joints Are Jumpin’”  is our signatureevent highlighting several of our bestknown uptown entertainment and foodemporiums.  Each  year  seven  to  ninerestaurants / nightclubs are selected bythe GHCC Tourism Committee to par-ticipate  by  opening  their  doors  toguests who are provided with a “Dis-cover Our Harlem Passport”. This al-lows our guests to have complimentaryadmission to all facilities where greatmusicians  are  featured  along  withfoods and beverages.

RADIO PROGRAMS

The GHCC Media Committee hosts

and co-produces two monthly radio

shows.  On the last Tuesday of each

month, activities  and  initiatives  of

the Chamber and HARLEM WEEK are

featured on WHCR-FM from 4:00PM

to 5:00PM.  On the last Sunday of

each month, WBLS-FM and WLIB-

AM  features a  live  simulcast  from

7:00PM to 8:00PM. This show is co-

hosted by renowned radio personal-

ity  “Imhotep”  Gary  Byrd  and

discusses a myriad of topics.
