President’s Corner Rumor has it that the long awaited summer season is

finally approaching. Of course, you can plan on the mandatory trip on the Thruway in that gas-guzzling SUV filled with over exuberant teenagers to a theme park or concert. Sport fans may take a similarly unaffordable out of town family trip to a ballgame. Or you could save time, gas, money and possibly your sanity and stay right here in Newark.

Here are my personal “travel tips” for a few “family fun” activities this summer in our quaint little town on the Erie Canal. How about enjoying a family picnic at our beautifully maintained Canal Park while watching the Canal boats cruising down the Erie? For you music aficionados, the Chamber is putting on a series of Free Friday night concerts at Canal Park. Our “Music on the Erie” Concert Series has some incredible bands from all music genres, so make sure to bring your family and friends and enjoy the concerts. And the sounds of “Play Ball” will resonate back at historic Colburn Park as Newark Pilots Baseball comes to town. You can take the whole family for what one beer would cost at Yankees Stadium (I speak from experience) and watch the Yankees highlights the next morning on Sports Center.

Coming June 10, 11, and 12th is the “can’t miss” local event of the summer…Newark Family Festival which includes the St. Michael’s Parish Festival, the Run for the Red 5k race, the Legendary Auto Car Show at Canal Park, spectacular free entertainment on the Bandwagon and in Central Park all weekend and around a 100 arts, crafts and food booths to enjoy. (Don’t miss the Fried Oreos and PBJ’s)

Lastly, I want to thank everyone from the Dinner Committee and the Chamber members that came to our Annual Awards Dinner. We had some very community-minded award winners that deserved all of our recognition. If you would like to serve on the Dinner Committee or have some suggestions for the dinner, please e-mail the Chamber office or myself.

Sincerely,

John Tickner

This year’s theme is “Color our Community with Pride.” The Event will begin between 9:15 AM and 10:00 AM, community volunteers will assemble in the parking lot on the south side of T. Spencer Knight Park near Pontillo’s (close to the intersection of Routes 31 and 88). Donuts and beverages will be served as crews receive their assignments. The work crews will hit the canal banks, parks, canal trails, area around old locks 58 and 59, parking lots, Village streets, and wherever debris removal is necessary. Last year, many volunteers did a terrific job!

We believe it can be a catalyst to showcase incredible volunteer spirit as it instills civic pride in our community.

This year, Community Pride Day will include a Village wide floral planting effort! Residents, schools and village businesses are invited to join the effort. We encourage you to get out and help make our community sparkle by cleaning up trash and planting colorful flowers around your own home yards and business store fronts during the month of May. Let’s show each other that we are proud to live here and do business in Newark. We are also looking for sponsors who would be willing to donate $250.00 to purchase a large planter that will be placed in the Downtown Newark Business District. These planters will note the sponsors who purchased them on a long last plaque that will be attached to the planter. For businesses and individual who would like to make a monetary contribution to help purchase flowers and potting materials, make the checks payable to “Village of Newark” and mail them or drop them off at Attn: Steve Murawski, Village of Newark, 100 East Miller Street, Newark, NY 14513
