Nestled along the Hudson River’s east bank, within a short distance from the hustle and bustle of New York City, lie the historic villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown. Both communities offer an attractive mixture of restaurants and shops, while providing an exciting draw for visitors who want to immerse themselves in local folklore.

Both communities feature adistinct blend of modern development and historic preservation with the presence of new multi-use structures and several well-maintained landmarks. Guests flock from all over to enjoy tours of these historic sites and to partake in the many communitywide events – notably Sleepy Hollow’s month-long Halloween celebration that features cemetery tours and activities surrounding the legend of the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane.

Adding to these truly unique qualities are attractive homes in friendly neighborhoods, quality educational institutions, a state-of-the-art hospital, a diverse and highly supportive business environment and beautiful riverfront parks and trails. With all of these facets put together, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown provide residents, businesses and guests the best of two worlds – all the conveniences of a big city with the charm of a small rivertown.

Although the area was originally home to the Weckquaesgeek Indians, the histories of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown did not begin until the late 1600s with the arrival of wealthy Dutch businessman Frederick Philipse. Philipse was given permission to purchase large tracts of land along the Hudson River’s eastern shore. He ultimately acquired around 90,000 acres of land and set to building his manor house, the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow and a gristmill.

During the 18th century, much of community life revolved around the gristmill, but there were a few farms and small shops that were also established in the area. Though the village was located on “The Neutral Ground,” a hotly contested no-man’s-land during the American Revolution, it was the site of one very important event. It was in Tarrytown that a British spy, Major John Andre, was captured with papers outlining a plot to surrender West Point to the British army – which was given to him by Benedict Arnold. Three local militiamen – John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams – caught Andre and exposed the plot on September 23, 1780.

The arrival of another important figure in the late 1790s would put the area on the map for centuries to come. Author Washington Irving spent time hunting, fishing and socializing in the community with friend and relative James Paulding. Later, Irving would immortalize the community in his tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow – depicting the local landscapes and structures (notably the Old Dutch Church and burying ground, which served as an important setting in the short story).

The 19th century brought on new growth, and in 1874 Sleepy Hollow incorporated as a village under the name North Tarrytown, until its renaming in 1996. At the turn of the century, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow began attracting new businesses and wealthy families, who began building sprawling castle-mansions. As a result, the area of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown became known as a “millionaire’s colony.”

Today, Tarrytown stands as a town of approximately 11,500, Sleepy Hollow at about 9,000. The villages have worked to ensure that the history of this charming area remains preserved. The Historical Society of Sleepy Hollow & Tarrytown maintains a museum packed with local artifacts, pictures and documents from the 1600s to the present day. In addition, Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) oversees several of the Hudson River Valley’s major historic attractions, such as Washington Irving’s Sunnyside estate, the Philipse family’s Philipsburg Manor and the beautiful Union Church of Pocantico Hills, while the National Trust for Historic Preservation maintains the Lyndhurst estate and the Rockefeller family’s Kykuit estate (though, HHV operates Kykuit’s tour program).

Flanking the eastern bank of the winding Hudson River, a short 25-mile drive to New York City, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown are strategically located near major roadways, railways and airports. All of these transportation outlets come together to offer stress-free travel in, out and around these charming Hudson River Valley communities.

I-87/I-287, the New York State Thruway, crosses the river from the west bank, meeting Tarrytown at the Tappan Zee Bridge on the river’s eastern side. U.S. Route 9 travels north-south along the bank, through both Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, while the Sprain Brook Parkway traverses the area’s eastern border. New York State Routes 448 and 117, along with a host of further well-maintained thoroughfares, make local travel quick and efficient.

Local commuters utilize the area’s high quality public transit services. Westchester County operates the Bee-Line, a public bus service with several routes connecting Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown to various destinations throughout the county and New York City. The Bee-Line also provides curb-to-curb paratransit service for disabled and elderly riders.

New York City is easily reachable via MTA’s Metro-North Railroad-Hudson line, which travels through both Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Express service from Tarrytown places riders at Grand Central Station in as little as 35 minutes, while regular service from Sleepy Hollow is less than one hour. Amtrak commuter rail also offers several routes for travelers in the area, with stations located in Croton-on-Hudson to the north and Yonkers and New Rochelle to the south and southeast.

The closest airport to Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown is Westchester County Airport (HPN). Approximately 25 minutes to the east, HPN is home to an active business aviation community and is served by seven major

airlines offering regular service to Atlanta, Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, Washington, D.C., Charlotte, Philadelphia and other destinations. Additionally, Stewart International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport (New Jersey) are all within reach of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.

Both the Village of Sleepy Hollow and the Village of Tarrytown operate parks and recreation departments which supply a host of recreational programming and several well-maintained park sites. Residents and visitors enjoy Pierson Park (Tarrytown) and Sleepy Hollow Landing – both riverfront parks – as well as Patriots Park, which straddles the border between the two communities. Patriots Park is adjacent to Warner Library and features playground equipment, basketball courts and a statute of John Paulding, a militiaman who helped capture Major John Andre during the American Revolution.

Sleepy Hollow hosts the 1,100-acre Rockefeller State Park Preserve, a great outdoor space featuring a mix of woodlands, wetland and meadows. With 20 miles of trails and a 24-acre lake, the preserve is ideal for hiking, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, birdwatching and wildlife viewing/photography. Outdoor education, changing exhibits in the Visitors Center and a variety of exciting events round out the park’s offerings.

Outdoor enthusiasts also utilize the Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway. The trail travels between Westchester County and New York City, and provides opportunities for walking, jogging, horseback riding and biking. Along the way, guests pass various landmark sites, including Old Dutch Church and the Pocantico River.

In addition to these local parks and trail sites, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown provide many other resources when it comes to maintaining the health and wellness of residents. The OnTrack Sport Center is a 26,000-square-foot facility featuring batting cages, two turf fields for various training and recreation programs and space for parties and events. The Family YMCA at Tarrytown and the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on the Hudson each offer well-equipped facilities with such amenities as fitness equipment, gymnasium space, group exercise studios and swimming pools. Both organizations also provide a long list of programming for people of all ages, including childcare, aquatics, athletic leagues, art classes, fitness and wellness programming, social services, after-school options and summer camps.

The Sleepy Hollow-Tarrytown community, nestled on the banks of the Hudson River with its rustic landmark lighthouse, is a beacon for the Hudson Valley area. Charming updated historic homes in quiet neighborhoods and beautiful modern dwellings offer magnificent vistas of the river and the homes tucked into the green hills of Rockland County, just the other side of the Tappan Zee Bridge. A variety of styles from colonials, cape cods and Victorians to contemporary, custom builds and single-family homes offer great variety and contribute to a small-town atmosphere with city-style conveniences. Major waterfront development featuring luxury townhomes at Ichabod’s Landing and Hudson Harbor come with extended amenities and impressive views. Duplexes and open lots for new builds are available, as are plenty of rental homes and apartment spaces.

Seniors looking for low maintenance or maintenance-free living are afforded several options in Westchester County. Sleepy Hollow itself hosts Kendal on Hudson, a Continuing Care Retirement Community ideally located on the Phelps Memorial Hospital Center campus. This riverfront community offers independent and assisted living options, as well as skilled nursing, rehabilitation and hospice care on-site at The Clearwater. Additional amenities provided at Kendal on Hudson include a 24-hour emergency response system, an on-site bank, wellness center, community center, walking paths and a list of cultural, recreational and educational programming.

HISTORIC ATTRACTIONS

Historic Hudson Valley (HHV) is a not-for-profit educational organization dedicated to preserving the history, landscape, architecture and culture of the Hudson Valley region in New York. HHV operates several historic landmarks in the Sleepy Hollow Country, including: Kykuit, home to four generations of the Rockefeller family; Philipsburg Manor, Upper Mills, an early 17th century farm owned by the Philipse family; Washington Irving’s Sunnyside estate; the Union Church of Pocantico Hills, with its beautiful stained glass windows; Lyndhurst, an 1838 Gothic Revival mansion designed by Andrew Jackson Davis and owned by Jay Gould; and Van Cortlandt Manor and Montgomery Place, which are located near Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.

The historic attractions don’t end there. The presence of Washington Irving and his tales is still felt at several local sites: Christ Episcopal Church, which was frequented by Irving until his death in 1859; the Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow and Old Dutch Burying Ground, a registered National Landmark and featured site in Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Irving and many other famous people have been laid to rest. Additional historic sites include the Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, built in 1883 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Historical Society Museum, which houses an extensive collection of memorabilia and documentation dating back to the 1600s. Also, be sure to plan a stop at the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, which continues the area’s strong agricultural tradition.

CULTURE & ENTERTAINMENT

From music and theater to historical celebrations, there is always something happening in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.

Music lovers take pleasure in performances hosted by the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory, the Friends of Music and the Jazz Forum Arts organization. The historic Tarrytown Music Hall is a widely popular entertainment venue in the region. The 843-seat hall was originally built in 1885 and today stands as the county’s oldest theater. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this fully operating theater’s stage is always bustling with music concerts, dance recitals, theatrical performances and many other exciting events.

The area also hosts a multitude of community events throughout the year, including farmers’ markets, street fairs and holiday parades. Perhaps the most popular time of year is Halloween in Sleepy Hollow. The entire month of October is dedicated to celebrating the spooky holiday and local haunted history. Among the many Halloween attractions are lantern-led Sleepy Hollow Cemetery Tours; Horseman’s Hollow, a haunted experience at Philipsburg Manor; dramatic retellings of Washington Irving’s tale, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow; and much more.

LODGING

With so much to see and do, one day is just not enough to experience all that Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown have to offer. The area furnishes overnight guests with plenty of options when it comes to comfortable lodging. Visitors are invited to choose from local landmark hotels and inns, such as the Castle on the Hudson, the Tarrytown House Estate and the Alexander Hamilton House, or various well-known national chains. Marriott Spring Hills Suites Tarrytown, Sheraton Tarrytown Hotel, Westchester Marriott Hotel, Courtyard by Marriott Tarrytown and DoubleTree Hotel Tarrytown are among the many excellent full-service hotels in town.

When it comes to shopping and dining, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown are home to a wide assortment of businesses sure to meet every need and want. Both communities offer a central business district lined with a bevy of shops and eateries beckoning passersby to come in to browse or sit down for a delicious meal.

Grocers, convenience stores and pet suppliers offer shoppers all the every day necessities, while local specialty shops provide an array of unique wares. Patrons peruse gift shops featuring one-of-a-kind Sleepy Hollow items, along with a fantastic collection of antique stores, galleries, jewelers, clothing boutiques and other retailers.

The dining landscape in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown is just as diverse. Restaurants specializing in foods from around the globe are great for a romantic night out or for catching up with friends. Italian, Mexican, Portuguese/Brazilian and Country America fare head up the fine dining discovered here. Hungry guests can also choose from pizzerias, delis, bakeries and local diners serving up all the American classics. Coffee and tea cafes provide an ideal atmosphere to linger and socialize. There are also fast-food establishments catering to the eater on the go, along with menus featuring tasty global fare.

Business continues to expand in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown as new development can be seen along the riverfront and in the central business districts. Companies of all shapes and sizes find the area quite appealing, thanks to its strategic location just 25 miles from New York City, its integrated transportation network and excellent business incentives on the local, state and national level. The area is also fortunate to have the support of village government and such organizations as the Sleepy Hollow Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce that work diligently to strengthen the local economy and the community as a whole.

Agriculture was very prominent during the area’s earliest days, eventually giving way to a rich industrial and manufacturing presence. Today, Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown host an eclectic array of businesses, from locally owned shops to larger, well-known national and international companies. Tourism also aids greatly in the local economy, drawing in visitors from all over the world who enjoy touring the many historic landmarks of the “real” Sleepy Hollow.

While the local economy has diversified, agriculture does remain a tradition, thanks to the establishment of the Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture. This nonprofit, 80-acre farm and education center has dedicated itself to increasing public awareness of community-based food production and training farmers in 21st century farming techniques. The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns supplies exceptional education to students in both Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown communities. The school district is composed of five schools, including: John Paulding School (grade K), W.L. Morse School (grades 1-2), Washington Irving School (grades 3-5), Sleepy Hollow Middle School (grades 6-8) and Sleepy Hollow High School (grades 9-12). The district offers advanced technology in the classroom at all levels, boy’s and girl’s athletics, arts offerings, an impressive number of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, a dual language program and after-school and enrichment programming in partnership with JCC on the Hudson and the Family YMCA at Tarrytown.

The area is also replete with independent and parochial school options, including the Transfiguration School – a K-8 Catholic elementary school in Tarrytown – and Hackley School. Hackley School is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory day and boarding school in Tarrytown. The school currently serves approximately 840 students (2010-2011) in grades K-12.

As for higher education, graduating high school seniors and adults looking to refine or acquire new skills have plenty of options within the surrounding area. An excellent community college is located nearby, as are several universities granting four-year undergraduate and graduate degrees. The area also hosts specialty schools, such as the New York School of Esthetics in Tarrytown.

In addition, the Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown community has access to various educational support resources, such as the Hudson Valley Writers’ Center (Sleepy Hollow), the EF International Language School (Tarrytown) and Warner Library (Tarrytown). The architecturally beautiful library, built in 1928, is lined with

The health and wellness of the Sleepy Hollow-Tarrytown community is ensured, thanks to the availability of numerous high quality medical providers. The area hosts a convenient mix of urgent care clinics, a major hospital campus, family medicine physicians, chiropractors, dentists, senior care facilities and many other medical resources. Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in Sleepy Hollow is a leading provider in the area. The 235-bed nonprofit hospital offers a wide range of excellent healthcare services and facilities, including the state-of-the-art Pain Center, an expanded Endoscopy Unit, a modern, 22,000-square-foot Emergency Department featuring 32 private patient rooms and a fully accredited Sleep Center. Additionally, Phelps Memorial houses the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, an outpatient facility providing medical-oncology and radiation-oncology services.

In recent years, Phelps Memorial Hospital Center has earned various recognitions for its excellence in healthcare. It garnered the Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association for excellence in stroke care, and was also named a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by the BlueCross BlueShield Association.

The hospital is dedicated to the education of both the community and the future of the medical industry. It serves as a training site for students from New York Medical College and, in 2012, will offer a Family Medicine residency program with the college. Worship has been a part of the Sleepy Hollow-Tarrytown area since its beginnings. The first church, the famous Old Dutch Church, was built by Frederick Philipse around 1685 – just 200 yards from his estate. The church was immortalized following the publishing of Washington Irving’s short story, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, in the early 1800s.

The Old Dutch Church is recognized among the oldest in the nation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Many historic features remain in the church, including the original 1685 bell and the 17th century communion table. Philipse, his second wife, Catherine van Cortlandt, and more than a dozen family members are buried in a crypt beneath the communion table.

The Old Dutch Church of Sleepy Hollow is still an active house of worship and is today joined by many other religious institutions – one of which is Christ Episcopal Church. Christ Episcopal Church was built in 1837, it was here that Washington Irving worshipped at the end of his life. You can still come in and sit and pray in his pew or browse the many artifacts, which are kept in the church library.
