Church-Wide Devotional Focus for Lent
The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 14, and runs through Easter Sunday on April 1. This
year we will focus on what is often referred to as “the ministry of all Christians.” By definition, all who seek to
follow Jesus are in the ministry of Jesus. In church terms, every member is a minister. And the way to find each
person’s “sweet spot” of ministry is to open your heart to your passions for the needs of others, both inside and
outside the church, and to discover (or re-discover) your spiritual gifts and practical skills for responding to
those needs.
The vision of an “every member a minister/every member in ministry” church comes from Ephesians,
chapter 4. This chapter begins with the Apostle Paul, urging us to “lead a life worthy of the calling to which you
have been called.” That calling, which all of us share, is to follow Jesus, be his disciples, and join him in his
ongoing work of ministry in the world. To that end, we are each endowed with spiritual gifts to do our part in a
cooperative and unified whole “for the work of ministry” and “for the building up of the body of Christ.”
Meditations on the Ministry of All Christians
My hope is that as many of you as possible will use the devotional guide Meditations on the Ministry of All
Christians, a collection of 40 days of readings and reflections, during Lent. These books will be available in the
Commons and in the church office for anyone who wants to get one.
We are asking all existing groups in the church - Sunday School Classes, UMW
Circles, Men’s and Women’s Discipleship Groups, etc. – to read through these daily
devotions and talk about them together on a weekly basis. Join the conversation. Join an
existing group OR invite a group of friends to join you once a week at your home or at a
favorite meeting spot once week for conversation and prayer for this purpose during Lent.
I’ll be preaching a series of Lenten sermons and preparing for our times of worship
in light of becoming an Ephesians 4 church – one in which we all find a meaningful and
joyful place in the ministry of Jesus in and through Yadkinville UMC.
A Gift that Will Keep On Giving!
Meditations on the Ministry of All Christians is a free gift to ourselves as the church to
help us grow in discipleship together. If you want to help defray the cost, the books are $5 each.
Our Ash Wednesday Service will be February 14, at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The Spanish as a Second
Language class will continue on Wednesday, February 21.
Blessed to be your pastor,
Chris

Trustees: Thanks to all who helped move the pews and furniture out of the Sanctuary for the floor
refinishing. Another thanks to those who helped put everything back in place. Hope you can see why the new
finish was needed (see pictures below).
While the pews were out, all of the lights in the Sanctuary were replaced with LED lights. If they
perform as advertised, it will be around 30 years before one needs to be replaced.
Cleaning day for the chairs and tables in the FLC will start at 8:00 a.m. Saturday February 24th
. Hope
you can come and help.
The carpet in the FLC and in the educational wing will be cleaned starting March 2nd
. We plan to clean
carpets, twice a year. Everyone can really help by cleaning spots when they occur.
Plans are under way for outside projects at the Church and Parsonage in the spring. We will let you
know when.
Safe Sanctuary procedures are being looked at by one of our attorneys and should be implemented soon.
Mark Diachenko is heading up a Safety and Emergency Plan for YUMC. If you have any suggestions,
let him know.

United Methodist Women: Greetings to all! Hope you can still remember your New Year’s
Resolution. It’s good to think of it often and continue to strive for improvement. There’s no failure that way!
We’ve been blessed with a few “spring like” days, and bulbs are pushing from the ground, so we know Spring
is coming! Good to think about on those cold, dreary days that we most likely will have.
While preparing for this article I asked members to share something about United Methodist Women: why they
attend, what do they like, or why they belong. Following are a couple of the responses. Will share more in
future articles.

“I really enjoy the friendship of the women in my circle. We are not a strict group and know how to have fun
too!” Gerri-Thursday Night Circle
“The GIGGLES Circle meets on the first Thursday night of each month, usually going to a restaurant.
GIGGLES stands for Girls In God, Giving, Learning (and Laughing), Eating, and Sharing. We try to do all of
that. Our circle sponsors the YES Mission Fund for Yadkinville Elementary School. (See insert from January
bulletins.) I like being part of UMW as a way of being involved in the church. It is a chance to help with
activities, a great way to meet other members and sometimes just have fun sharing time with other women who
share your outlook on life and understand the balancing of work, life, children, family, and church. Being
involved with UMW is a good way to contribute time and talents to your church.” Cooky-GIGGLES Circle
Thank you to everyone that contributed to the YES Project (Yadkinville Elementary School), sponsored by the
Giggles Circle! Everyone was very generous and enjoyed the delicious soup luncheon and great fellowship!
All women are invited to join United Methodist Women. You are welcome to
attend any of the Circle meetings. It is not necessary to attend meetings to be a
member. If anyone is interested in a different time, we are open to suggestions and
would love to start another Circle. This includes all ages and it is not necessary to
belong to any church. The only requirement is to choose to belong and support the
Purpose. See below:
Purpose: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose
purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ: to develop a
creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global
ministries of the church.

Missions: Every month the Missions Committee is focusing on a Mission Outreach project. It may be a
local non-profit or a UMC Ministry. This month, we are focusing on the Salary Support for our missionary,
Clara Biswas.
The Missions Committee will meet Tuesday, February 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Asbury Sunday School
Room. If you are interested in the missions program here at YUMC, please join the committee members at our
meeting. Suggestions and ideas are always welcome. We need you!
Thank you. Many baby items were received at the Christmas Eve service -- blankets, diapers, clothing,
etc. Yadkin Christian Ministries received the diapers and wipes. Other items were made available to NETWorX.
Yadkin Christian Ministries needs toilet paper and cereal. If you can provide either of these, please place
in the YCM basket in the Commons.

February Mission Focus: Salary Support for Clara Biswas: Clara is a missionary with the General Board of
Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as a community worker in
Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She works with the ‘poorest of the poor,’ especially children, in
slum areas and garbage dumps to facilitate their transfers to relocation and rehabilitation
centers.
The program supports 620 students in public schools by providing classes in such
areas as music, computer science, and art. It offers Sunday school and conducts Christmas
and Easter programs each year. A health component refers patients to hospitals and non-
governmental organization (NGO) health centers. Clara has worked for a long time with a church at one of the
dumpsites, and now also works with the Berung Kok Methodist Church in Phnom Penh’s large slum area of
Toul Kork, which is near the railway station and similar to the dumpsite areas. She also networks with other
churches and NGOs, as well as visiting, monitoring, and caring for patients.
Clara has extensive experience as a volunteer in the Student Christian Movement. Her training in
international, cross-cultural, and women’s empowerment meetings is vast. She speaks English, Bengali, Hindi,
and Japanese.
Born in Barisal, Bangladesh, Clara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and a diploma in
rural leadership and development from the Asian Rural Institute in Tochigi-Ken, Japan. She is a member of the
Church of Bangladesh, a united denomination.
Childrens Ministries: The Children's Ministry is having a Sunday Valentine Funday on Sunday,
February 11th, after the Traditional Service. We will serve a pizza lunch and then make Valentines as our
Mission Project to take to the Hospice families and staff. If there is time, we will have a movie and other
activities. For more information please contact Lynn Winters 843-685-5152 or [email protected]
