Transcript of The Grapevine - Clover...

From our Pastor:
I have been enjoying our fifth Sunday tradition of combining our worship settings and sharing a meal together
as a congregation. An added feature to the day is a gathering of all of our church leaders - all members of all
church committees, mission teams and projects, teachers and coordinators – all with a
stake in the mission and ministry – for a Ministry Leadership Conference.
Fifth Sunday Celebration
July 30
10:00 a.m. – Combined Worship Service
11:00 a.m. – Covered Dish Lunch
Noon – Ministry Leadership Conference
Bring some friends and some extra food for our fifth Sunday worship service and
community meal. Following lunch, our church leaders will remain in the Family Life
Center for a time of celebration, learning, inspiration, and networking. We will continue to focus on our “why”
as a church – the “why” of what we do and how we do it.
Worship in July On the Sundays before and after July 4, we’ll celebrate “Interdependence Days.” We’re in this life together,
after all! We are created for relationship, with God and with the Creation, and with others. As the body of
Christ, we are knit together, members of each other. And, like the parts of a body indispensible to each other!
For the rest of July and into Sundays of August, we’ll discover together the wonders of the Holy Trinity and
how so many of the things we tend to think about in “threes” give rise to some wonderful “fourths” as spirit
“matters” or materializes into tangible realities:
The fullness of God experienced as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
Faith, hope, and love expressed in tangible embodied mission
Seeds, moist earth, and heat from the sun producing food
Old Testament, New Testament, and Our Testament expressed in living word, faithful works
Elements (like water, bread, and grape juice), ritual, and the Holy Spirit make Sacraments and disciples.
It’s going to be a great summer of growth and new life as we are knit together as the church!
Blessed to be your pastor,
Chris

Trustees: Outside work has been done at the parsonage. Bushes and trees were trimmed, islands were
weeded. and edges worked on.
The playground equipment has been checked and looks in good shape for the next year or so. New
mulch has been put down and new sand in the sand box.
The Trustees are discussing the need to refinish the Sanctuary floors and will make a decision at the next
meeting.
If there is a need to adjust the air conditioning, please know how to do it properly and then reset before
you leave. We will be glad to give instructions on how to set the temperatures.
The next Trustee meeting will be on Tuesday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Virgil Dodson, Chairperson
Youth: June was an exciting time for the Youth Group (formerly the Junior Youth). They, along with Karen
Pizzuti, (and some assistance from parents) delivered and served lunch to one of the work
crews for Impact Yadkin. Our group eagerly awaits the next Impact Yadkin as they will be
ready to serve in a different capacity!
Our July meeting schedule will be on July 16, 2017 and July 30, 2017 at noon. You
may have read in the bulletin that the youth will have a table (or ten!) at the
Consignment/Yard Sale. We want your items!! If you have items that you would like to
donate for the yard sale, but do not want to have a table yourself, give it to the youth group.
We will sell items at the yard sale to raise money for our mission work. Items can be dropped off during church
office hours (Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.) or on Sundays. You can leave items in the youth
room or the church office. Please be sure to let Angie (336-244-5739), Bobbi (336-399-0879), or Karen (336-
468-4312) know if you leave items; you can call or text.
Our youth group is open to grades 7 through 12 (ages 13 to 18). If you are an adult that would like to
mentor, please come or communicate with one of our leaders.
Bobbie Reavis & Angie Whitley, Youth Leaders
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE JUNIOR YOUTH about the YARD SALE!
For those of you who just want to get rid of your “stuff," you can donate it
to the Junior Youth. We will have a booth (two, or ten!) to sell ALL of the
donated items. We will use the proceeds from our booth sales to fund our
mission work!
This is a win-win: the church gets booth rental funds, the Junior Youth
can work on missions, and you get rid of all that unwanted clutter lying around
your house! FYI: Items donated to the Junior Youth for this sale are tax deductible! You will
be given a receipt for your items.
If you have items that you want to donate, you can bring to the church during normal
office hours or on Sunday. We will store items for the Junior Youth booth in the Historic
Church.

TWO-DAY INDOOR YARD SALE
Have you been thinking about a yard sale? But, you didn’t want to do all that
work on your own! Well, we have a solution for you! On Friday, July 28,
2017 (8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) and Saturday, July 29, 2017 (9:00 a.m. to 1:00
p.m.) Hope Cole is organizing a consignment sale in the Family Life Center.
What does that mean? You CAN RENT a “booth” (also called a table) for your sale. The rent
per booth (table) will be $15.00. You can set up your booth however you see fit. All sales will
be your money! But, the funds raised from the booth sales will be donated to the Missions
Fund! You must sign up to participate! There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the
Commons Area. Make your checks payable to YUMC with a memo “consignment booth."
A meeting will be held on Sunday, July 2, 2017, after the Contemporary Worship to discuss
details and answer questions.
United Methodist Women: Just who are United Methodist Women and what have they been up to
lately? They are not all cut out of the same pattern, but do have the same Purpose and are members of the same
body of Christ, with many gifts and talents.
Since the last newsletter members have attended WNCC Annual
Conference and the UMW Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska. Spiritual
Growth is something we all have in common and this retreat is one of our favorite
UMW Conference events. Of course the beautiful environment contributes. This
year the theme was S.M.I.L.E. (See Miracles in Life Everyday) with Rev. Ashley
Pickerel Thomas the speaker. Her messages were based on "Do Justice, Love
Mercy, Walk Humbly." The messages were so impressive that we felt the need to share with our unit. We
purchased DVDs of the messages so that the Circles may use for a program or they may be borrowed by
individuals.
Many of our members assisted with Impact Yadkin, participated in hosting 4 teams for worship and a
church-wide covered dish lunch for the Kick-off. This was a blessing for our church as well as the teams. Many
of our members assisted in the daily meals prepared for teams. We also have members that help provide
childcare for NETworX Yadkin, and are assisting with the Summer Fun Program that our church is
sponsoring.
Hopefully, all will be able to take time for a much deserved vacation!
What’s in store for July? Some will be attending Mission U at Pfeiffer University July 13-16. The
theme is "In covenant with All Creation." Contact Sandy Steele 336-679-6139 if you are interested in attending.
Deadline for registration is July 3.
Every Tuesday and Thursday, (except July 4) Summer Fun will be meeting in the Family Life Center.
More Volunteers are desperately needed for snacks, assisting children, recreation, reading, crafts, and
5
projects in the Family Life Center. Volunteers arrive at 9:00 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at
12:30. Lunch is served to the children at 11:30.
Each Monday at 5:30 p.m. NETworX Yadkin meets. Volunteers for a simple meal and assistance
with childcare are needed, especially during vacation time. Our UMW assists whenever possible. Anyone
interested contact Mildred Carter at 336-679-8038.
Tuesday, July 21: Gathering (all Circles attend together) Frances Mabe, Mission Coordinator for
Social Action, will be in charge of the program. Hostess: Giggles Circle
All women in the church and outside are invited to any of the UMW events. For more information
contact Maxine (Cooky) Weatherman ([email protected]), Mission Coordinator for Membership Nurture and
Outreach, or Linda Baity, President, 336-679-8648 or any member or officer.

Thank You, God: WHEN I LOOK at all that you have created, God, I want to know you better. I can
feel you smiling on me when the sun comes up in the morning and when it sets in the evening.
Walking outdoors is a daily reminder of all you have done for me.
When I am feeling tired and weary, the beauty of your creation refreshes my soul.
In the quiet of the outdoors, I hear the gentle whisper that often gets lost in the busyness and noise
of everyday life. Thank you, God. –devozine, May-June 2017

Missions: Every month the Missions Committee is focusing on a Mission Outreach project. All loose plate
offering and designated offerings during July will go to the project. This month we are raising funds for salary
support of our Missionary, Clara Biswas. Each year, the Missions Committee selects a missionary that we
establish a covenant relationship with. Our commitment is $5.00 per church member, paid quarterly.
Clara is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church
serving as a community worker in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She works with the ‘poorest of the poor,’ especially
children, in slum areas and garbage dumps to facilitate their transfers to relocation and rehabilitation centers.
The program supports 620 students in public schools by providing classes in such
areas as music, computer science, and art. It offers Sunday school and conducts Christmas
and Easter programs each year. A health component refers patients to hospitals and non-
governmental organization (NGO) health centers. Clara has worked for a long time with a
church at one of the dumpsites, and now also works with the Berung Kok Methodist
Church in Phnom Penh’s large slum area of Toul Kork, which is near the railway station
and similar to the dumpsite areas. She also networks with other churches and NGOs, as
well as visiting, monitoring, and caring for patients.
Clara has extensive experience as a volunteer in the Student Christian Movement. Her training in
international, cross-cultural, and women’s empowerment meetings is vast. She speaks English, Bengali, Hindi,
and Japanese.
Born in Barisal, Bangladesh, Clara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in social science and a diploma in
rural leadership and development from the Asian Rural Institute in Tochigi-Ken, Japan. She is a member of the
Church of Bangladesh, a united denomination.

Summer Fun 2017: The Summer Fun began June 27 and will continue through August 10 each Tuesday
(except July 4) and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30. We provide lunch (free USDA) for kids in our community,
spiritual nourishment, literacy assistance, and fun with kids in K-6. We still need volunteers who love
children and want them to succeed. Working together we can make a difference. Sandy Steele, Linda
Baity, Gingi Parker, and Mildred Carter are coordinating Summer Fun this year. We are blessed
to have Pastor Chris leading music and worship. Also, we are partnering with the Y to lead P.E.
Virginia Parker, Missions Chairperson
Wednesday Night Study: The Wednesday night study continues through the summer in the Family
Life Center. We are exploring the possibilities of deeper discipleship and spiritual friendships
going forward. The study begins at 6:00 p.m. We finish by or before 7:00 p.m. Come check out the
possibilities! (Note: The suppers will return in late August.)
Desserts and Fireworks: It is almost here, the 4th of July! We will continue
our tradition of gathering on the back lawn to celebrate our Country's Independence and
watch the Town of Yadkinville's fireworks. You may bring a dessert to share if you
want to. Come for fellowship before the fireworks display around 9:00 p.m.

A Letter To NC Senators About The AHCA From Bishops Ward & Leeland JUNE 27, 2017 Greetings to you in the name of Jesus Christ. We, the Bishops of The United Methodist Church in North Carolina, write to you to express our deep concern for what we see as a reduction to the health care benefits of many North Carolinians. We represent over 2000 congregations in North Carolina communities, with over 500,000 members. Our ministries of outreach affect many thousands more. We are in daily touch with the needs of people, and we know the serious impacts of proposed legislation upon our constituents in North Carolina. We applaud the manner of openness and bipartisanship with which you are conducting the Senate investigation into the alleged Russian interference in the American election process, and we call upon you to request that same degree of transparency in the development of improved health care legislation that will affect millions of Americans. The recent secret deliberations of a selected few Republican Senators on a new American Health Care Bill (AHCA) on a matter that affects all Americans regardless of their political affiliation does not reflect the standards of transparency and democracy we expect from our government. We strongly urge bi-partisan approaches and open hearings to the crafting of such important life-affecting legislation. The recently passed House bill calls for a major reduction in Medicaid funding. The Senate bill would yield even greater impact, affecting the most vulnerable in North Carolina. Almost half of NC children with chronic conditions such as juvenile diabetes and asthma rely on Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which also provide in-home care for children with disabilities; screening, diagnosis, and treatment of physical and mental illnesses; and lab tests, x-rays, and hospital visits, among other things. Medicaid cuts would result in the reduction of doctor-recommended services, special education services, and provider payments. The impact would fall heaviest on the weakest among us as thousands lose vital coverage. We have particular concern regarding the impact on elderly people and our rural hospitals. Adults aged 59-64 could pay up to five times more for coverage than younger people, with the real result of precluding access to healthcare. The fiscal impact on our rural hospitals, who depend upon Medicaid payouts in covering the cost of caring for low-income persons, extends to their communities at large with the likely result of more hospital closings in North Carolina. The United Methodist Church has repeatedly called for universal access to affordable health care and universal insurance coverage, something the Affordable Care Act sought to do. The AHCA and the Better Care Reconciliation Act do not reflect those values. We call upon you to vote NO to the Senate bill as it will have a deeply negative affect on the lives of thousands of people you represent. We know that they count on your position as their Senator to act in their interests. Yours in Christ, Bishop Hope Morgan Ward Bishop Paul Leeland North Carolina Conference Western North Carolina United Methodist Church United Methodist Church
Delegates at both Annual Conferences approved a petition asking the Bishops to send this letter.
