We are Out-of-the-Box People

From Pastor LaurieAbundant Life

Throughout the Easter season, we heard the phrase “abundant life.” It is certainly one of the cornerstones of our Christian faith as we find in the Gospel of John 10:10 Jesus saying, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

Abundance however is a complicated word, especially by definition and the standards of the world around us. Everything points to having more possessions, money, and owning more things as the way to an abundant life. Commercials, films, reality TV, politicians, and even many religious communities that espouse a religion of prosperity, tell us we need to buy more so we can be more. Yet as we look around, it seems as if more and more people feel empty, lost, trying to fill a hole that seems to have no end.

One of my favorite authors, Wendell Berry, has thought deeply about this word “abundant,” especially as it applies to the way Jesus uses it in the Gospel of John. He writes, “To talk about or to desire more abundance of anything has probably always been dangerous, but it seems particularly dangerous now. In an age of materialist science, economics, art and politics, we ought not to be much shocked by the appearance of materialist religion. We know we don’t have to look far to find people who equate more abundant life with a bigger car, a bigger house, a bigger bank account, and a bigger church. They are wrong, of course. If Jesus meant only that we should have more possessions or even more ‘life expectancy,’ then John 10:10 is no more remarkable than any of the endless stream of advertisements with which we’re bombarded. Abundance, in this verse, cannot refer to an abundance of material possessions, for life does not require a material abundance; it requires only a material sufficiency. That sufficiency granted, life itself, which is a membership in the living world, is already an abundance.”

I think Berry is right when he says, “Life itself is already an abundance.” And not in a Hallmark Card kind of way, but in the real way that can be felt and seen and heard only after helping to build a home for a low-income family through Habitat for Humanity, or proclaiming our church’s extravagant welcome at Gay PRIDE, or knitting prayer shawls for those who are ill, or watching our children be nurtured by the good news of God’s love for them, or by learning, studying, worshipping, sharing in community, caring for others, being mindful of the world and responding to the needs of others.

You get the picture. Abundant life looks different in different places and to different people, but it’s always a response to whatever offers us and others fulfillment, laughter, purpose, and joy. Check out this edition of the Tidings and find ways to live abundantly.

Blessings,

Pastor Laurie

Spring into WorshipEach Sunday morning,

two worship experiences are offered:

9:00 a.m. Worship in the ChapelA more intimate and meditative worship experience in Moye Chapel.

Holy Communion is celebrated weekly and music is presented by one of our talented soloists or Vocal Ensemble. Following our service enjoy some conversation with others around the Coffee Bar.

11:00 a.m. Worship in the Sanctuary

We gather in the beauty of our historic sanctuary to be engaged in meaningful worship, which feeds our spiritual hunger. It is said that each week is a bit different; there is always something that

challenges and calls us to our authentic selves. Join us for beautiful music, challenging and inspiring messages, and liturgy that offers a renewal of mind and spirit. This service is also streamed live online

at http://gablesucc.org/live.

While each Sunday is special, here is a list of some very extra-special Sundays:

Sunday, May 1 – All That Jazz Aldous Huxley once said, “After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music.” Join us at the 11:00 a.m. service when our church’s Community Arts Program ALL-STAR Jazz Ensemble will offer instrumental music that makes a joyful noise!

Sunday, May 15 – Pentecost On this day of Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian Church, we recall Jesus’ words as he commissioned his disciples to go forth in faith, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives.” If we are to fulfill our vocation as believers, as faith filled people, the church must ask, “How do we help bring peace to our community, nation, and world?” Wear red – the color of Pentecost!

Sunday, June 5 – Music Ministry Sunday

Be with us on this special Sunday as our Chancel Choir, Vocal Ensemble and Handbell Choirs sing and ring their way into summer with a variety of inspiring music that will move and inspire us as they do each Sunday throughout the year. While we will give the choir a little vacation during the summer months, we invite you to be part of our special summer choirs.

Sunday, June 12 – Geoffrey Black to Preach The Rev. Geoffrey Black, the former General Minister and President (GMP) of the United Church of Christ, will be our morning preacher. Prior to his election as GMP, Rev. Black was Conference Minister of the UCC’s New York Conference and a previous program staff member in the UCC’s Office for Church Life and Leadership. During his career, he has served as assistant chaplain at Brown University, associate minister at St. Albans (N.Y.) Congregational UCC, pastor of Congregational UCC of Hempstead, New York, lecturer in the Field Education Department of Union Theological Seminary in New York and protestant chaplain at Adelphi University. Ecumenical commitment, concern for equal justice, African-American empowerment, and community improvement have shaped Black’s ministry in the church and in the communities in which he has lived. He is presently Visiting Professor at Eden Theological Seminary.

The Elephant Returns! It’s almost Summer which means there is an Elephant in the Pew

June 19, 26 and July 3

Has there ever been something you wanted to know about your faith, but were afraid to ask? Well, this is your chance to ask tough questions about the Bible, church, ethics, or life and get an honest and personal answer back from Pastor Laurie. Maybe it’s a topic or issue that we tend to sweep under the rug or ignore in order to keep the peace, avoid disagreement, or maybe even change… kind of like that proverbial elephant in the room or, in this case, in the Pew.

Over the past seven years, Pastor Laurie has an-swered questions concerning Palestine and Israel, atonement, angels, the afterlife and even one in 2010 about whether LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwayne Wade were really the “New Kingdom” as the Miami Herald declared. (For the record, she said yes). E-mail, write, or call Pastor Laurie, or go to the Gables UCC Facebook page and leave your question. She just might preach on it! Then join us after worship for the Sermon Feedback Café. Have a little lunch and a conversation with Pastor Lau-rie about her sermon for the day. We will meet in Havighorst Lounge at 12:15 p.m.

Sermon Feedback CaféJoin us after worship on Elephant in the Pew Sundays for Sermon Feedback Café. Have a little snack and conversation with Pastor Laurie about her sermon for the day. We will meet in Havighorst Lounge at 12:15 p.m. Dissenting views are encouraged!

Choir NewsSpecial Father’s Day ChoirSunday, June 19 at the 11:00 a.m. Service In honor of Father’s Day, we will feature the return appearance of the Gables UCC Father’s Day Singers. All of our great-grandfathers, grandfathers, fathers, sons, grandsons, great-grandsons, uncles, and nephews are invited to meet Ron Morgan in the Music Room at 10:15 a.m. to put together an exciting men’s choral anthem.

As a special treat for all those who sang in, heard, and cheered on the Father’s Day Singers, we will have an ice-cream social following 11:00 a.m. worship. Ice cream and your favorite toppings will be provided. How about some hot fudge or marshmallow sauce, or maybe some sprinkles or M&M’s and, of course, some whipped cream?

Editor’s Note: Many Thanks to our Fabulous Choirs!

Throughout the year, our choirs brought us such beautiful and meaningful music. From our children’s and youth choirs, to our Bell Choir, to the mem-bers of the Vocal Ensemble, to our Chancel Choir, who week after week provide spiritual nourishment through a diversity of music, a BIG THANK YOU.

A very special thank you to Dr. Ronald Morgan, our Director of Music Ministry, for his passion and commitment to high quality church music, to Dr. Greg Taylor, our parish musician for his enthralling instrumental music, and directors Alex Woods and Brandon Mowry for sharing their talent with us.

Welcome Aaron Lauer Nine months ago, a specially appointed Search Committee of the church was entrusted with the responsibility of selecting a candidate for an Associate Pastor to be presented to the members of the church for their approval. The work of this new Associate Pastor is focused around youth and millennial ministry, as well as helping our congregation live out its faith by engaging us in the work of social justice and peace. The Search Committee sought a passionate, motivated, and committed person with an entrepreneurial spirit to join our ministry team and strong lay leadership so that together we can lean into the future and build a vibrant and meaningful church for the 21st Century.

After carefully reviewing the UCC Ministerial Profiles of almost 25 candidates as well as three candidates of other denominations, checking references, interviewing three candidates by SKYPE, and bringing two of them to Coral Gables for a face-to-face interview, the Search Committee unanimously selected—through prayer and mutual consent— Aaron Lauer as its candidate for Associate Pastor.

On Saturday, April 16, a special open house was held at the home of Pastor Laurie so that church members and families could meet Aaron personally. Then on Sunday, April 17, following his candidating

sermon, a special congregational meeting was held for the purpose of calling Aaron as one of our pastors. The congregation voted overwhelmingly to welcome Aaron into our community and warmly received him with a standing ovation at that announcement. Having now received a call to a church, Aaron will be ordained in May in his home church, First Congregational UCC in Minneapolis. He will begin his ministry with us in early June, 2016.

Aaron writes of himself, “I grew up in a small town in the Nebraska Sandhills, the youngest child in a family of four children. My family was very involved in our more conservative evangelical church for all my childhood and youth. For my undergraduate degree, I attended Hastings College, a small liberal arts college in southern Nebraska. While there, I was introduced to progressive Christianity that had a deep concern for social justice and a liberating reading of the Bible. In my senior year, I discerned a call to seminary and moved to Minneapolis to attend United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. While there (though I’d known about the UCC for a while) I became more involved with the UCC, volunteering at Pilgrim Point summer camp and a local church Vacation Bible School. I graduated in 2010 with a Masters in Religion and Theology, and soon after started serving at First Congregational Church of Minneapolis, UCC as their Minister for Children, Youth, and Families. While working at First Church, I heard God calling me back to seminary once more (!!!) and I graduated with my M.Div. in 2015 from United Theological Seminary.”

We look forward to Aaron’s ministry with and among us and thank him for finding something in us that compelled him to say “yes” to making a big leap of faith in coming to South Florida.

Also, many thanks to the members of the Search Committee include: Raul Hernandez, Chair; Emily Roles Fotso, John Graham, Dawn Thompson, Celine Clark, Tim Knoll, Laura Lazar, and Pastor Laurie.

Re-enchantment without Supernaturalism Sundays, April 3 - May 1 (5 sessions) Mr. Rick Walters will explore a new philosophy of religion which he describes as “Re-enchantment without Supernaturalism” based upon five concepts of interpretation:

1. Demythologizing the scripture and tradition.

2. A new way of thinking about God as an alternative to supernatural intervention.

3. De-ideologizing scripture and religion by removing sexism, homophobia, racism and violence and af-firming the power of love and compassion.

4. A new basis for authentic moral action based upon faith.

5. Re-enchantment – falling in love again with faith seeking understanding and the recapture of mystery and imagination.

Church by Another Way Sundays, May 15 - 29

While every generation experiences change, sometimes you just sense you are in the midst of truly radical change, the kind that happens only every few centuries. It seems that way for the “church” of today. Statistics show that those Americans who are “churchless,” meaning they have no church affiliation, will soon eclipse the “churched.” In addition, the majority of people under 40 are said to be post-Christian in their beliefs, thinking, and worldview. To say the least, there is a changing geography of the church and the face of religion and the question emerges, can the church be saved? Before the grave is dug and the burial shroud placed upon the church, let’s talk! Join Pastor Laurie for a three-week series on Church by Another Way as she addresses the future of the church.

Jazz for the Journey: An Exploration at the Intersection of Jazz, Spirituality, and Worship Sundays, June 5 - 26

Three things are known about Geoffrey Black, the former General Minister and President of the UCC: He loves his family, he loves his church, and he loves his jazz! Join Rev. Black for a four-week series that celebrates, shares and explores the creative possibilities of jazz and its power to speak to our existential situation and transform Christian worship and our faith.

Mid-week Adult Study Divine Hiddenness Wednesdays, April 6 - 27 6:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge Dr. Nathaniel Holmes, Jr., Guest Teacher

Divine Hiddenness is an argument, first articulated formally by philosopher John L. Schellenberg, that suggests there would be more evidence of God’s existence if there really was a God. However, the great Reformation theologian Martin Luther said that God hides for the purpose of drawing out faith in human beings, and that it is in the inaccessible realm of hiddenness where God resides. In this four-week course, we will explore and discuss the implications of divine hiddenness for faith and life. We will explore concepts of belief vs. non-belief as well as faith and doubt, naturalism and science, and the problem of suffering and evil in the Christian tradition, all within the Christian tradition of Divine Hiddenness.

Nathaniel Holmes Jr. is Assistant Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Florida Memorial University, Miami Florida. He also serves as Associate Pastor of Christian Education at New Birth Baptist Church. He has a Mas-ters of Theological Studies from Christian Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from St. Thomas University. His research interests include interfaith dialogue, the theology of Paul Tillich, and the philosophy of Charles Peirce.

Foreign Film Night: Jesus of Montreal Rated R, 120 minutes. Wednesday June 22 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. in Havighorst Lounge

What happens to the people putting on a Passion Play? Denys Arcand’s Jesus of Montreal proposes an engaging possibility. In hip present-day (1990) Montreal, a group of actors stages the Passion in an outdoor, somewhat avant-garde style, led by the quietly charismatic and increasingly uncanny young man (Lothaire Bluteau, Black Robe) playing Christ. His identification with the role, and the way it bleeds into real life, gives director Denys Arcand plenty of opportunities for social comment - some of it spot-on, some of it a little facile. But the fragile Bluteau is such a fascinating lead presence (the other actors are familiar from Arcand’s Barbarian Invasions and Decline of the American Empire) that the movie’s spell lasts long after it’s over. It turns out the French-Canadian approach to the Passion can be just as intriguing as the original Aramaic version. Wine, bread, cheese and sparkling water will be served. Donations will be gratefully accepted.

Wednesday Evening Special StudyFostering Independence in the Latin FamilyWednesday, May 4, 11, 18 in Havighorst Lounge 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (With 15 minutes to say goodbye)

Generally speaking, interdependence is a value in the Hispanic culture. The family structure is that of the extended family. The concept of family goes beyond the nucleus of mother, father and children to include grandparents, aunts, uncles, grandchildren, cousins and even neighbors and close friends. Obligation towards all family members is expected and accepted as an important role to be fulfilled by all members.

But what happens when children choose to go far away to college, to live on their own, or a portion of the family moves away from the nucleus of the family? How do you as parents, grandparents, children or other family members, who have been socialized to keep the family together, deal with the emotional challenges and misunderstandings that come with changing family patterns?

Church member and family therapist Sofia Larraz, LCSW, will lead this three-week session. Come listen, learn, and share your own stories as the group reflects on what it means to be a family in these changing times. Of course, such questions and concerns transcend culture, so all are welcome to attend no matter your cultural background, family tradition, or ethnicity.

Mother’s Day Offering of LettersSunday, May 8 12:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall On Sunday, May 8, we will hold a Mother’s Day Campaign Against Hunger. Following worship, all church members and friends are invited to participate in Bread for the World’s Annual Offering of Letters, urging Congress to renew our federal government’s major child nutrition programs including those for school meals and the WIC nutrition program for pregnant and new mothers along with their small children.

In honor of your mother, grandmother, or other special women in your life, we invite you to write a letter to President Obama and/or to your elected legislators on behalf of so many mothers who struggle every day to feed their families. In turn you will receive a card to be given to your mother or special woman which says, “In your honor, I have sent a letter to the President of the United States and to my elected legislator to urge them to renew support for helping mothers around the country feed their children. Happy Mother’s Day!”

We can end hunger in our time, but we must do our part. For more information about Bread for the World and how we can play a part in helping to end hunger, visit http://www.bread.org.

Haiti FundraiserThursday, May 12 7:00 p.m. in Fellowship Hall

In 2011, our church began a four-year commitment to sponsor a young man named Sebacien in his education through an organization called H.E.L.P. (Haitian Education and Leadership Program). Haiti’s 1% univer-sity enrollment rate means that most of Haiti’s potential professionals are denied the opportunity to gain the advanced skills and education necessary to contribute to social and economic progress in their country. HELP di-rectly addresses these issues by providing comprehensive university scholarships for high-performing, economi-cally disadvantaged secondary school graduates in Haiti. Sabacien successfully completed his college education and is now working in Haiti. We are pleased to introduce our newest student, Erdjanie Joseph, who has been accepted to study agro-economics at Quisqueya University in Haiti. Erdjanie, the only girl of four children, was raised in a poor coastal town. She is determined to succeed and make her parents proud: “I set myself a goal to be among the very best students. If you give all your heart and soul, show courage, faith and dedication to making your dreams come true, then with the help of God, they will.” She wants to study Agro-economy, as she loves science, math, and nature. “I want to make the Haiti of the future a luscious place full of trees.”

On Thursday, May 12, a fundraiser for HELP and for other causes our congregation supports in Haiti including the Roger Dunwell Community School in Aquin, Haiti, will be held in our Fellowship Hall. If you wish to contribute directly to our HELP Scholarship Fund, if you are able to provide items for the silent auction, or if you are willing to volunteer your time for the fundraiser, please contact Carol Krech at [email protected], Dawn Thompson at [email protected], or Pastor Laurie at 305.448.7421 ext. 116.

Green Christians Gables UCC Is Recycling Electronics! Recycling old electronics is important as it allows us to maintain a clean and safe environment. Many people don’t realize the different types of electronic items that can be recycled. In fact, electronic waste includes end-of-life household batteries, toner cartridges, television sets, central processing units, printers, laptops, radios, and monitors. Recycling these old and non-working items keeps them out of landfills, which is important as many electronic products contain heavy metals and other materials that the EPA classifies as “toxic” or “hazardous” materials. In addition, recycling electronics recovers valuable materials, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, saves energy and conserves resources. E-Waste recycling is also beneficial to the community because it fosters job creation when student technicians are hired to test and refurbish the recycled items. Finally, e-waste recycling organizations can then donate refurbished items to schools, low-income families, and non-profit organizations.

You can continue to recycle your old electronic items by bringing them to Gables UCC and dropping them off in our Electronic Recycling Bin located in the Fellowship Hall. We had to switch partnerships from Electric Ants, our initial pick up company, to Electronics Recycling Center who will collect our items and bring them to their facility to be recycled from now on.

Earth Day Celebration Sunday, April 24 12:15 p.m. in Fellowship Hall In celebration of Earth Day, please join us in Fellowship Hall on April 24 after the worship service to learn more about ways we can reduce our impact on the planet. Find out about what we can do about sea level rise and the destruction of the world around us. This is a time to realize the interconnectedness that is woven into the fabric of life, and how to choose our future. There will be information available for energy efficiency, water usage, solar installations, drought resistant plants, recycling and more. Join us for a very special Green Christians Presentation Sunday Morning, June 26

For those of you who have lived in Florida for a while, the name Bob Graham needs no introduction. He has served in Florida’s House of Representatives as well as the Florida Senate. His public service also included three terms as a U.S. Senator and two terms as Florida’s governor. His experience gives him a rich perspective for solving the problems we face. He is now a spokesperson for the Florida Conservation Coalition and is bringing his insights to our church on Sunday June 26. Please mark your calendars, as this is a talk you don’t want to miss!

Gay Pride Parade Once again, Coral Gables Congregational UCC, the very first congregation to be part of the Miami Gay Pride Parade, shared our extravagant welcome and belief that God’s love is for all people, through an award-winning (at least in our minds) float, a dance team, and almost 50 marchers on Sunday, April 10 during the annual Miami Beach Gay PRIDE parade. Both the Miami Herald and CBS News highlighted our presence at the parade. Many thanks to all who shared our vision of an inclusive church where all are invited no matter who they are or where they are on life’s journey, or with whom they walk that journey.

Thank You Coral Gables Congregational UCC For your generosity for the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering (OGHS)

$ 2,381

OGHS is a special mission offering of the United Church of Christ which involves you in disaster, refugee/immigration, and development ministries throughout the world. When a disaster strikes or people are displaced or made refugees by violence or extreme poverty, you are part of the immediate response and of the long-term recovery. Through OGHS, you engage in holistic development programs including health care, education, agriculture, food sustainability, micro-financing and women’s empowerment. Because the UCC relates in mutual partnership to churches and organizations through Global Ministries and worldwide response and recovery networks, your contributions to One Great Hour of Sharing put you in the right place at the right time for the relief, accompaniment and recovery of the most vulnerable. You meet immediate needs and you address the underlying causes that create those needs in the first place. If you would still like to donate, please go to our website at www.gablesucc.org. We thank you for your generous contribution.

Join us for a Life-Changing Mission TripJuly 10 – July 16 Back Bay Mission in Biloxi, Mississippi

Members of the church 16 years old and older are invited to share a week of their time and talent by helping to refurbish homes in bad repair through Back Bay Mission, one of the oldest United Church of Christ missions in the country. Located in Biloxi, Mississippi, Back Bay has been a lasting source of hope and help for thousands of children, adults, and families along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, one of the most impoverished areas in the U.S. Ten years ago, the mission and the surrounding community suffered some of the worst effects of Hurricane Katrina. There is still much work to be done for the poor and marginalized of that area. If you are interested in learning more, please sign up with Drew Sandbulte at [email protected].

Sunday School during Season of Easter, April 3 - May 15

During the Easter season, the focus passages all come from the Book of Acts in the New Testament. Acts provides stories of the apostles and the early Christian church. We will learn about Peter who denied Jesus, Paul who once persecuted Jesus’ disciples, Ananias who gave the gift of healing and reconciliation and Tabitha who cared for others. These were the people who continued the story of Jesus. We are reminded that individuals such as these, and the small community of Jesus’ followers after the Resurrection, were the beginning of the worldwide church we know today!

Sunday School during Season after Pentecost May 22 - June 26

Trinity Sunday leads us from the red of Pentecost Sunday to the green growing time of the Season after Pentecost. We begin this season celebrating God’s presence with Wisdom. A study of the prophets will follow. We will hear how both Elijah and Elisha were encouraged to pay attention to voices from the edges; voices of justice, silence, change and unexpected wisdom. We too will be encouraged to listen to these voices in our time and to be the voices as we grow together within the global community.

Confirmation Program Begins This Fall

Confirmation is the program by which young people in eighth or ninth grade prepare to “confirm” the baptis-mal vows that their parents took for them when they were much younger. It is their chance to say “yes” to their baptism and for the church to say “yes” to their growing faith.

It is also a time for young people to prepare to take on the privileges and responsibilities of church membership by learning more about their faith, the church, and specifically Coral Gables UCC and the United Church of Christ. For six months, they will study and discuss such topics as: Church History, Ethics, The Bible, Christian Beliefs, and Christian Faith in Action.

All parents or guardians of youth in eighth or ninth grade (or above if they have not yet been confirmed) are invited to an orientation meeting on Wednesday, May 25, from 6:00 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Pizza will be served. If you cannot be present and are interested, please contact Pastor Laurie.

We know that all of our young people today are busy and that their lives are filled with many activities; but we believe that this is an important part of their growing up. It helps them to prepare to make an informed decision about their own personal faith and commitment to the church.

“[Some of the] best classical concerts of the year.” South Florida Classical Review

“Heeeeeeeere’s Johnny!” That lead-in followed by a big band trumpet blast, was the landmark of late-night television for three decades. The “Johnny” was Johnny Carson, the announcer was Ed McMahon, and the bandleader was the great Doc Severinsen (pictured). The Community Arts Program (CAP) 2016 Summer Concert Series opens June 9 with Doc Severinsen in “Trumpet Kings,” joined by the sensational Byron Stripling Quartet. June 23 brings Sybarite5, the incredible groundbreaking string quintet whose classically-honed technique mixed with grit and passion recently rocked the Aspen Music Festival.

Thank You, Janet Hiles! The Director of the Early Childhood Center Janet Hiles will be retiring at the end of this school year. Janet has been an integral part of the ECC staff since 1997 and has served as its Director for the past three years. Janet followed long-time director Barbara Watson who retired in 2013 after thirty-nine years of stellar service. Janet helped maintain the integrity, philosophy, and quality of ECC in the midst of such a big change.

Everyone who knows Janet agrees that she is wise, caring, dedicated, and loves the children, parents, and staff that make up the ECC family. Over the years, she has poured her heart and soul into ECC making it one of the finest (if not the finest) preschool in our community. It is difficult to say goodbye to such a well-respected, committed director, but we wish her all the best as she begins this new journey in her life.

On Sunday, May 22, during our morning worship, we will honor Janet and thank her for her many years of service.

A search committee has been meeting on a regular basis and hopes to have a new, highly qualified and experienced director in place by early summer. They are looking for someone who meets the qualifications for an accredited preschool like ECC, who is well-versed in early childhood education, and who can provide visionary leadership in realizing the school’s mission, vision, values, and strategic goals. Members of the search committee are Ann de las Pozas, chair; Dana Viggiano, Arnaldo Elguezabal, Margaret Roles, Osamudia James and Pastor Laurie.

Leave more than an empty pew... Leave a legacy. One of the great gifts of this congregation is its Legacy Fund, an endowment fund that was created many years ago to provide for the future of our church. Because of the generosity of members past and present, our Legacy Fund provides additional revenue to our yearly budget, giving us the opportunity to provide more outreach, more programming, and more ministries. It also serves as a safety net to ensure that the important witness of this church will continue for generations to come.

The Legacy Fund Committee would like to invite you to pass the blessings you have received on to others by making an enduring gift to this ongoing fund. Your gift will become a perpetual source of financial support for Gables UCC and its ministries and missions well into the future. All our funds are invested in ways that demonstrate sound social and environmental practices. Gifts are fully deductible for federal income, estate and gift tax purposes, and may help you avoid capital gains taxes. More than that, when you make a gift to the Legacy Fund, you leave a legacy, not just an empty pew. For more information, speak with Pastor Laurie or Business Manager, Dennis Rodrigues.

• That our services are now streamed live online? Invite your family and friends around the world to worship with us online each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. by going to www.gablesucc.org/live.

• That you can give flowers to signify a special occasion or to remember or honor someone special? You are invited to place a bouquet of flowers on our altar table each Sunday morning. The occasion will be marked in our Sunday bulletin. There is a sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall, or please contact the church office at 305.448.7421 ext. 100. You may bring in your own bouquet, or we will order it for you.

• That each week paperless bulletins are available? Simply go to www.gablesucc.org/live and click on the bulletin link. Our bulletin will then be instantly downloaded to your PC, tablet, or smartphone.

• The church will be closed every Monday from June 20 - August 15? Except for emergencies, no meetings, no custodians, no staff, no gatherings will be available on Mondays in our main building. It is our hope that this summer brings Sabbath to our hard working employees and that, with the reduction of lights, air-conditioning, electricity, and custodial help, we will save resources of money and of the earth.

• That each week (or at least most weeks) Pastor Laurie sends out a wrap-up of the events the past week and what to expect in the week to come? It also mentions those who are ill, special events, and always includes a bad joke. To receive Laurie’s Lines, contact Ron Morgan at [email protected] or at 305.448.7421 x 121.
