The Global Miller blog is an online offshoot of Grain and Feed Milling Technology magazine. While the bi-monthly magazine covers milling technology issues in-depth, the Global Miller takes a lighter approach.

Our columnists have a keen eye for the most interesting, relevant and (let’s face it) bizarre milling stories from across the world. Each weekday we scour the internet for top-notch news and package it for your perusal in one neat daily digest.

The Global Millers are also massive fans of industry events and shows and can often be found out on the road. Here they share stories (and photos) from their travels and, being unable to keep a secret, share details of upcoming events. But the Global Miller is your space too; feel free to comment and share your views.

Kiotechagil technical symposium targets Peru. High performance natural feed additive supplier Kiotechagil and Montana, one of the most important premix/nutrition company in Peru, hosted a technical seminar which gave Peruvian producers the technical information and solutions for important challenges such intestinal health and myocotoxicosis. Held in Lima, the event was attended by around 30 poultry and swine producers and pres-entations were made by Ian Cockshott on the importance of mycotoxins and products to prevent its impact and by Dr Luciano Sa on improving in-testinal health of poultry and pigs with slow release organic acids in feed. “Our message was that to maximise performance and profitability for producers, animals need to grow as fast and as efficiently as their genetic make-up allows and that the bacterial balance in the digestive tract is one of the main issues effecting global poultry performance at the moment,” said Ian Cockshott. “We also made producers well aware that continued use of antibiotics to control bacteria may not be the answer. Organic Ac-ids such as pHorce and Bactacid are well recognised as highly effective

We may think this summer's drought has been bad but it's nothing com-pared to the USA in the 1930s. Destructive farming techniques and per-sistent drought caused 100 million acres of Great Plains topsoil to blow away causing what is commonly known as the Dust Bowl. This blog post from the USDA documents how Congress responded to the events and the eventual formation of the USDA. There are also some great photos from the 1930s on the site. More information...

Rice production is outstripping demand according to the FAO's Rice Market Monitor report. The UN department has raised its estimation for global paddy production for 2012 by 4.2 million tonnes to 729 million tonnes. This figure equates to 486 million tones once milled. 2012 is pre-dicted to be the eighth consecutive year of rice stock accumulation, with an estimated 170 million tonnes of carryover stock. As a result, the world rice stock-to-use ratio is forecast to rise from 33.6 percent in 2012 to 35.5 percent in 2013. Read the FAO report...

Thirty participants from across the United States travelled to the Inter-national Grains Program to gain knowledge of the HACCP program. In order for individuals involved in the feed industry to develop an effec-tive HACCP program, IGP held a HACCP Feed Manufacturing course in conjunction with the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) and the National Grain and Feed Association (NGFA). The course was held November 5-8, 2012, at the IGP Conference Center. Feed mill managers, quality assurance personnel and ingredient suppliers in the feed industry were in attendance. “The course provided the basic tools for feed millers to learn, and how to implement all the principles of HACCP step-by-step,” says Carlos Campabadal, IGP feed manufacturing program specialist and the course manager. “Participants left with the right knowledge to develop a HACCP plan at their facility.”

22/11/12: Stories on arsenic in rice, enzymes for pasta and the demise of Twinkies It is understandable that when the words 'arsenic' and 'food' are used in the same sentence, consumers start to panic. However, in the US there is no standard for inorganic arsenic levels in food. The substance naturally occurs in crops such as rice. This family case study, published in the New York Times, highlights the challenges farmers face when explaining the inorganic arsenic conundrum to consumers. Read more...

Flour standardisation specialist Muhlenchemie has launched a new en-zyme product which it believes will optimise pasta production. Pastazym Plus is a all-round flour improving enzyme compound which delivers per-fect pasta, irrespective of wheat quality, says the company. The multifunc-tional enzyme compound also has the advantage of making the surface of the dried pasta look better and giving it greater mechanical stability. If permitted in the country of destination, colourants and vitamins can be added to the compounds. They can be added safely to the dough in one single, easy operation to produce, for example, a rich yellow shade. Read more...

Rice in Japan has hit a six-year high with the best crop since 2008, boost-ing demand for cheaper overseas supply and raising questions about a government policy that protects producers. As Myanmar comes out of isolation with recent political reforms, the inter-national community is closing ranks to help the country recover – with a focus on helping rice farmers reach the country's production potential. A collaboration between Myanmar, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), and the Livelihoods and Food Security Trust Fund (LIFT) seeks to realise in an undertaking that addresses the risks farmers face in these rice-growing areas. "Interventions to reduce the vulnerability of Myan-mar's farmers to extreme weather being caused by climate change mean promoting the use of rice varieties that can tolerate floods, salinity, and drought, as well as management approaches that support optimum per-formance of these improved rice varieties," says IRRI's Dr. David John-son, coordinator for the Consortium for Unfavorable Rice Environments (CURE).
