Happy Thanksgiving!

We’re grateful to be part of such a caring and thoughtful community. Staff Spotlight

John Miller

John Van Dyke Miller started working at Taylor Community on November 21, 1993, making him the longest tenured employee on Team Taylor.

Johnny, as he is affectionately called by most of us, actually begin working at Taylor six months prior to that as a

temporary employee. Obviously recog-nizing his work ethic, leadership at the

time hired him on full time as the Grounds Supervisor. Johnny did this for a few years before absorbing maintenance into his daily routine when he became the Grounds and Maintenance Supervisor.

Johnny actually worked two jobs for many years. He was also the owner operator of John Miller LLC, a high-end residential painting company operating out of the Lakes Region. However, for the last several years, John has only had enough time to lead our painting crews, often working enough hours to account for two positions.

Married to his wife Linda for 35 years, Johnny has two adult sons, Alex and Nicholas, and one grandson, Adin. Being a military buff, Johnny likes the fact that his two sons are named after Russian czars. He and Linda purchased and moved into their home on Van Dyke Street six months after they were married and developed and built the homes on his street. Having accomplished this feat, Johnny then had the ability to name the street and Van Dyke Street was born.

Johnny grew up with two sisters and a brother and summered frequently in the Lakes Region with his family. He was born and spent the early part of his childhood in San Francisco. However, his family moved to Manhattan when he was 8 and then lived all over Europe and Asia throughout his teen years. Moving around created an interesting childhood and was made possible by his dad’s executive career first with the Delmonte Food Corporation and then later by the Reynolds Food Corporation.

When Johnny isn’t working, he is either fishing or hunting and is an avid snowmobiler and skier. As an avid skier, he has skied most of the mountains in New Hampshire, throughout the Rocky Mountains and across the Alps. His personal favorite is skiing the Alps. The more powder the better!

Johnny isn’t thinking about retirement just yet. He

loves his job and would like us to hire multiple painting

crews to keep him busy. We’re working on that one,

Johnny.

~Michael Flaherty It’s JUST a memory now.

Dr. Seavey is an applied ecologist focused on anthro-pogenic impacts on marine and avian species. Her research program ex-plores climate change; spatial ecology; conservation biology; and the re-covery of endangered species. Her academic achievements include a

Ph.D. in Natural Resource Conservation from the University of Massachusetts; M.S. in Wildlife Science from the University of Washington; and a B.S. degree is in Biology from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. Before joining Shoals Marine Laboratory, Dr. Seavey held a faculty appointment in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida, where she also served as the Assistant Director for University of Florida’s Seahorse Key Marine Laboratory. Personally, she is very committed to the sustainability of our nation’s field stations and ma-rine laboratories. She serves as a board member for the Organization of Biological Field Stations and on the steering committee of the Northeastern Coastal Stations Alliance. When she is not working, you can find her in or on water - salty, fresh and frozen - in a kayak, on skis, with a snorkel, on a bike, whatever it takes to enjoy the natural world. Thank You for Your Support of the Sunshine Fund!

The generosity and kindness of our residents is truly a gift. What a wonder-ful community in which to live and work! The donations continue to roll in and I’ve had to ask for help in writing all the thank-you notes.

Sunshine Fund auctions, reintroduced last year, have been fun for staff. We get some great stuff, and proceeds to the Sunshine Fund reached almost $7000 this year. The resident-led Pub Nights have generated approximately $1500 in proceeds. Various redirects, such as speaking honorariums, 50/50 Raffle proceeds, etc. have also added to the Fund.

The Independent Resident Association (IRA) and the Resident Forum campaign tirelessly on behalf of staff each year. Thank you so much. The IRA and the Woodside Store added almost $7000 to this year’s till, with approximately $2500 of the total coming from the Yard Sale they held this summer.

Thank You to all of our Residents! It can’t properly be expressed in full, but we appreciate all you do! The kind notes you send with your donations are all very much appreciated and shared with staff.

A resident recently inquired about adding a recurring monthly donation to the Sunshine Fund to their Taylor

statement as a way of spreading it out throughout the year. We can do this, and Sue Kibby will be happy to set this up for you if you choose (366-1210).

Donations for this year’s holiday distribution will be accepted through December 1.
