Taylor Hosts Huot Students On October 21, the Taylor Community hosted Huot Tech-nical Center Health Science students for a day of learn-ing. The 70 stu-dents are juniors and seniors from high schools around

the Lakes Region who are considering a career in health care. The students went through an orientation with Human Resources, learning about the interviewing and hiring process, and then spent time learning about career opportunities from many different departments at Taylor Community. The goal of the day was to introduce the students to the many opportunities that are available both at Taylor and in the community at large, from nursing to rehab to social work, and everything in between. Follow-ing the educational sessions, the students took a walking tour of the Taylor campus, followed by a barbecue at Taylor Home. The students and teachers plan to contin-ue to build a partnership with Taylor Community, and we expect the students to return on a regular basis to get to know the residents, as well as conduct their clinical train-ing for LNA licensure. Being virtually next door to the high school allows Taylor Community to provide a unique opportunity to the students that is not often available in other communities. We hope that this new relationship will continue to grow over the coming years, and that students will be inspired to stay in the community as they travel their career paths.

No classes Thursday, November 28

Happy Thanksgiving!

Doris Duff (Continued from Page 1)

Doris served a three-year term on the Board of Governors from 1965-1968. She was the only woman on the board with 23 men. Today, there are 11 women and 13 men on the board.

During her three-year term, Doris recalls that a meeting was schedule at a private men’s club on Beacon Hill in Boston. “I and the rest of the Board of Governors had to go in the rear of the building through the kitchen to a private room for lunch, because the men in the sitting room would not

accept seeing a woman in the club.”

In his remarks at the leadership dinner, current Board of Governors President James Driscoll stated, “In having the courage and confidence to join an all-male board, Mrs. Duff showed her own particular style of leadership and did her part to create a better today. Thank you very much to Mrs. Duff for her service to our organization.”

Congratulations to Doris on her special recognition. We are, indeed, fortunate to have such a trail blazing woman living here at Taylor Community.

Welcome to Taylor Community!

Thank You, First Responders!

Deducing that Ned Devine is the lucky man, O’Shea and O’Sullivan pay him a visit, only to find him dead from shock.

Author Lecture: Thomas W. Farmen Bessie’s Story — Watching the Lights Go Out

Thursday, November 21

Bessie’s Story — Watching the Lights Go Out is an inspiring story about a charming, brave, chocolate Lab who gradually loses her eyesight. The author leads the reader from the unexpected diagnosis of terminal blindness for his beloved four-year-old pet through the two-and-a-half year transition to sightlessness. In the process, Bessie unwittingly becomes an expert mentor and teacher for the high-wire act of growing older with grace and optimism. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Community House, 6:30pm.

Broadway Musical: CATS Wednesday, November 27

One of the longest-running hits in the history of Broadway and the West End, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats has been specially restaged for this video presen-tation, which captures all the music and movement of the original stage produc-tion with an uncommon intimacy and

depth. A sung-through musical based on the 1939 poetry book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, CATS tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the "Jellicle choice," deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The musical includes the well-known song Memory as sung by Grizabella. Run time 2 hrs. Community House, 7pm.

Staff Spotlight Crystal Hardy

If you are in Taylor Home or Ledgeview, you have met with Crystal Hardy, who is Taylor’s Assistant Director of Clinical Services. Her office is in Taylor Home, but she is usually meeting with residents somewhere on cam-pus. Crystal came to Taylor two years ago after spending 21 years working at Genesis in Laconia where she began her career as a nurse. Coming to Taylor Community has been an eye-opener for Crystal, as moving from a “corporate” nursing home to Taylor showed how a not-for-profit organization, with great staffing ratios and caring management and staff, make all the difference in the life of the residents.

Crystal worked in food service before she became a nurse, and managed a restaurant in Newport, RI before she decided to come back to the Lakes Region. She lives in Belmont with her husband, Rick. Crystal has two adult children, a 28-year-old son who is an Army Veteran of Afghanistan and a 25-year-old daughter, and a 16-year-old daughter. In addition, she has four grandchildren, ages 4, 3, 2 and 7 months. She has a giant golden doodle named Charlie and a cat named Cheeto. Charlie sometimes come to visit Taylor Home but he is a big baby when he is here and gets nervous when he cannot see his Mommy.

Crystal has spent many years as a cheerleading coach for All Star Cheering, but now that her youngest daughter is finished with cheerleading, she is hanging up her pom-poms for the last time. Through cheerleading she has traveled extensively, and recently she spent time at the World Championships in Disney World. She would love to do more traveling; Mexico is her favorite destination. Crystal’s hobbies include caring for her grandchildren and going to flea markets and auctions. ~ Ed Soucy

The Native American name Winnipesaukee means either "Smile of the Great Spirit" or "Beautiful Water in a High Place," depending on whose translation you

use. Islands are places of discovery, mystery, isolation and adventure. Squam Lake, made popular as the filming location for the movie On Golden Pond in 1981, was originally known by Native Americans as Keeseenunknipee, meaning “the goose lake in the highlands,” and by the early 19th century was given another Abenaki name, “Asquam,” meaning “water,” which was later shortened to its present name, Squam. Monday – November 25 – Author Lecture with Michael Petipas: Abandoned New Hampshire – In Abandoned New Hampshire, Michael Petipas captures his home state’s past in the present through a collection of photographs. Through this visual journey, discov-er the beauty left in the wreckage and rubble of these old buildings before they disappear. All abandoned locations have a story to tell. Some are simply homes that have been aban-doned for any number of reasons. Others were once giants of industry that employed the majority of the people who lived around them. Local favorites such as the Colonial Theater hold a sense of nostalgia for residents, while the history of some places is left to the imagination as they sit empty and dark through the heat of summer and cold of winter. These old bones are all that is left of an era. Woodside, 6:30pm.

Tuesday – November 26 – TED Talk: Innovating to Zero – Access to light and electricity is hugely empowering. How can we rapidly drive down carbon emissions, but also to help meet rising global elec-tricity demand? Brian Moriarty has re-created many of the classic parts that haven’t been available for these cars in 60 years. Join us as Brian tours us through his private collection. The group will enjoy lunch after the tour at Six Burner Bistro. Bus pick-up begins at 9am.

Friday – November 8 – New England Aquarium [Moderate] – Marvel at the bustling penguin colony, then circle the four-story Caribbean coral reef teeming with sea turtles, eels, barracuda, tarpon

and hundreds more tropical fish. Your Aquarium adventure includes playful seals, eye-catching jellies and unforgettable hands-on experiences at their

shark and ray touch tank. With fish from your watery backyard and reefs around the world, the aquarium will delight the ocean lover in you. Admission is $25.95. A picnic lunch will be prepared by Dining Services. Bus pick-up begins at 8:15am.

Tuesday – November 12 – Meredith Sculpture Walk [Moderate to Independent—distance walking] – Sponsored by the non-profit Greater Meredith Program, the Meredith Sculpture Walk (MSW) promotes awareness & enjoyment of public art through an annual, free to the public exhibit. It contains installations on Main Street, throughout the Mill Falls Marketplace, and in the parks on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in historic Meredith. Installations for the MSW's inaugural year began June 2014. This year-round outdoor exhibit welcomes work by artists from around the country, and an independent jury selects among exceptional works from artists who apply for the annual exhibit by March 31. Most works may be purchased directly from the artists. Join us on this docent-led tour through the Meredith Sculpture Walk. Bus pick-up begins at 8:45am.

Thursday – November 14 – Andres Institute of Art Sculpture Walk [Independent—strenuous walking] – Andres Institute of Art is a public sculp-ture park in Brookline, NH, founded in 1996 by local benefactor Paul Andres and sculptor John Weidman. It is the largest sculpture park by area in New England, with a collection of more than 80 metal and stone sculptures that are distributed over 140 acres on Potanipo Hill, the site of a former ski area. The sculptures are situated in a variety of garden and forested situations, spread

over eleven hiking trails on the hillside. The trails range from easy to difficult, and the views along them change drastically with the changing of the seasons. Most of the sculptures are abstract and

cryptic pieces, with each year's accessions coming from both new artists and familiar ones. The trails lead visitors by works such as Contempo Rustic, a couch fashioned from slabs of rock and metal, or Mbari House, a house-shaped granite-and-metal totem to peace and friendship. ADMISSION IS FREE. Bus pick-up begins at 8:15am.

Friday – November 22 – Winnipesaukee Playhouse: It’s a Wonderful Life [Easy] – A live radio play, adapted by Joe Landry. It may not be true that every time a bell rings an angel dons wings: but it is true that every time the sound effects man adds to the telling of this classic, we’re delivered again to a snowy Christmas Eve in Bedford Falls and George Bailey’s dilemma. A handful of actors deliver the story as the Lux Radio hour may have done in 1947, and audiences not only experience the joy of this holiday classic, but also the live storytelling tradition of this annual Winni Players Community Theatre event! Tickets are $15 for this event and are non-refundable. Bus pick-up begins at 6pm.

BURSTING AT THE SEAMS?

The Taylor Resident Association is considering re-instating the yard sale that had been held in a couple of past years to help residents shed unneeded items and to benefit the Sunshine Fund.

The completion of the Pavilion next year provides a great opportunity to utilize a location that could resolve issues such as parking and logistics experienced previously when the sale was scattered throughout the Taylor neighborhoods.

We are in need of residents who would be willing to serve on a committee to plan and coordinate the sale — no experience necessary. Those interested, please contact John Ford at 556-9176 or [email protected].

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR KINDNESS!

Special thanks to all who donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. Donations were not tallied by press time, so please stay tuned for the results of our food drive.

Big thanks also go out to Hannaford’s in Gilford for supplying the bags for our donations, and especially to all of the volunteers at St. Vincent de Paul, who care so very much!

~Maureen

Woodside Store

With the cool days coming and the leaves in full color, we know the holidays can’t be far behind! The store is full of Halloween decor — scarves, socks, lots of napkins and kitchen items — please come in and browse. In November we will be adding a new item each week for

Christmas ideas: some for yourself, family or your best friend. Right now we have a new item — shelf covers for the Woodside apartments. Let the Bogars or Sally Reeder know if you have any needs: we’re here to help.
