HISTORICAL FACTORS THAT SHAPED FRENCH NATIONALISM

• The political system that was in place in France during the time period between 400-1500 CE is also referred to as the ANCIEN REGIME.

• During this period, ABSOLUTISM was established which gave the monarch the power to rule the land and the people by the divine right of kings-this meant that the King was only answerable to God.

SOCIETY IN FEUDAL FRANCE

• French society was divided up into three estates:

• First Estate (the Roman Catholic Clergy)

• Second Estate (the Nobility)

• Third Estate was made up of serfs and the rest of the population. The Third Estate was the largest in population making up approximately 2.3 million, or 98%, of the French population.

SKIPPING AHEAD

• In 1539, King Francis 1, signed a law called the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterets, which was legislation to discontinue using Latin in official French documents.

• This legislation set the stage for French to become the official language of France rather that the many different dialects and languages of the various regions.

• HOW MIGHT THE USE OF FRENCH INFLUENCE THE PEOPLES’ SENSE OF NATION?

SKIPPING AHEAD

• By the 18th century, the BOURGEOISIE (working class), started to demand change to the ancient regime. They were educated and literate and understood the disparity of the classes.

• They resented the First and Second Estates due to the heavy taxes that were imposed upon the Third Estate.

• They also opposed being dictated by the clergy and nobility.

• Even some members of the Second Estate encouraged changes to the political structure-after all, this was the Age of Enlightenment.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS

• Due to the inequality of the Estates-General (1st, 2nd & 3rd Estates), the Bourgeoisie were angry with the limitations placed upon their class.

• The Third Estate did not have a voice that was taken seriously because the 1st and 2nd Estates would out-vote them if they so desired (vote by bloc). Therefore, change for the Third Estate did not happen.
