PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Tom Spriet–[email protected]

Hey Guys.

Easter is gone, its 60 degrees outside, and our flyingseason is about kick into full swing. I think thecameras at the field have received a lot of hits thisweek from you folks wondering who’s there? Is it niceenough to fly? What about the wind? Is that JT I see??Better get out there and partake in the fun. Now thatthe sun is staying up longer it’s time to get to the fieldafter work. I’m ready to fly, aren’t you?? Lets go doit!

April brings field cleanup. Getting the fieldready for summer andall-out flying activitiesis almost here. Makesure you come out forclean up and bring oneof those projects to test fly afterwards. I don’t know about youbut my flight line is just about ready. Time to check thosebatteries, get fresh fuel, knock the winter dust off and head tothe field—but not this weekend. It’s off to Toledo for Karol andI as well as a couple of dozen other FVAC members. It’s themecca of RC gatherings, its called “Weak Signals”. Iunderstand that 9000 folks come through the doors, so come ifyou can or plan to go next year. It’s a hoot! Yea baby, it’s theRC mecca of shows!

This year we have trimmed down a few event days to allow themembers more weekend flying time. Also, make sure youcheck our schedule and plan to attend and support our events. The first event is non-flying and its main purpose is to provideexposure of our club to the residents of St. Charles by ourparticipation in the Memorial Day Parade. The board feels it’s

very important that we kick up our participation in city events. We at FVAC need to show a presence to the residents and letthem know we are a fun, loving and giving group. Soon wewill need all the support we can muster to bolster our messagethat we should remain in our present location. Yes, our field. It’s soon to be lease renewal time and we may need their help.We are inside of 12 months and its time to promote Fox ValleyAero Club!!

See you at the field, Tom Spriet GHP

AMA Clubs Encouraged to Participate inFirst Annual National Model AviationDay, August 17, 2013.

To celebrate the storied history of modelaviation, AMA chartered clubs areencouraged to take part in the first annualNational Model Aviation Day on August 17,2013. Clubs across the country are invited tohost an event of their choice to celebrate theday. Clubs are encouraged to reach out andmake this a community event. NationalModel Aviation Day will be a greatopportunity to introduce model aviation toyour friends and families. And, for thisinaugural year, we’re asking that clubs whohost an event do so in support of theWounded Warrior Project.

Wounded Warrior’s mission is to raiseawareness and enlist the public’s aid for theneeds of injured members of the US Militaryand to provide programs and services tohelp support our country’s injured heroes.Hosting an event on National Model AviationDay is a win/win for AMA clubs, itsmembers, and all of those courageousservice men and women who have given somuch to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.

Please stay tuned as details will soon bereleased on the AMA website, in ModelAviation magazine, and in future issues ofAMA Today.

From the views on the web cams lately it appears the2013 season has begun. Unfortunately, I haven’tbeen able to partake yet; I hope that will changesoon. If this was a newsletter dealing withremodeling and power tools, I could fill severalpages. I’ll keep it short in the mean time.

I want to thank the contributors this month.

Walt Thyng has submitted the first of several articleson LiPo batteries. With more and more of us using electric power, these articles willbe a great resource. You can find the first article on page 8.

Alan Galle has shared photos of his latest project: Skyfire 40. Pictures taken atdifferent stages of the construction can be found on page 14. Thanks, Alan forsharing with us.

Our secretary, Dale Gathman, has captured a few of you out at the field committingaviation. Two pages of photos “From the Field” begin on page 15.

This month’s member spotlight shines on Jack Ekstrom. I had the pleasure ofmeeting with Jack at his house for pictures and great conversation. Jack’s answersand photos are found on page 17.

I’m always happy to accept contributions to this newsletter! Send yourpictures, articles, building tips, cool stuff to: [email protected]

A New Year! A New Flight! We canlook forward to days of fun in thesun! Early morning eastern sunriseand the late evening western sunsetoften make for good flying andgreat aviation conversation.

At our March meeting, the mentionof Cub Days built interest andstirred excitement around themedflying days. The friendly skies must

have heard the buzz, as soon after the weather was perfect forCub flying. Early one Thursday afternoon, FVAC skies filledwith yellow Cubs in all different sizes flown by pilots ofvarying flying skill levels. Everyone had mad-fun, both flyingtheir Cub and sharing common experiences. I had the pleasure

of adding a Great Planes J-3 Cub to my hangar, which is nowready to maiden. Looking forward to this Cub flight andwelcome any experienced club trainers to assist me. Anytakers?

Welcome to spring and the FVAC skies!

Welcome to SPRING! By thetime you read this our duespayment deadline will havepassed and I will be sendingout an e-mail to thosemembers who have not sentin their renewals. Mostmembers have rejoined theFVAC and look forward to agreat flying season. Ourcheckbook is in great shape

to handle the budget passed by theboard as presented by our maintenancechairman Mark Knoppkie. There willbe a slight interruption to our flying asa major item in that budget calls forsealcoating and restriping the runwaywhich needs to be done this year.

Speaking of interruptions, my flyingseason will get off to a late start as myophthalmologist says it’s time for mycataract operation to take place. I hopeto get this done in April and start flyingin early May if all goes well. This

getting old isn’t as easy as Ithought it would be.

By the time you read thisToledo will be in the historybooks and hopefully Ishowed some restraintwhile walking the aisles asmy shop is already full ofprojects for my retirement. As this picture shows, Iadded a concrete floor tomy crawlspace this monthas I had to get a crack in awall fixed.

Now that my shop is backtogether, I started on a projectthat I purchased out ofDominic’s inventory a couple ofyears ago. Most of my projectsare scale aerobatic airplanes butonce in a while it’s good to goscale as well. This DC-3 is quitea challenge as it will have 12servos in it and will be poweredby two OS FS95v enginesturning 13 X 8 three bladedprops.

I am still working on getting the Smart-Fly EQ6 turbo working in myExtra 300. They call it smart fly but it makes me feel stupid.

I also picked up another scale project from Sal Perno this winter aBeechcraft Bonanza by KMP but like a good wine it will have to age a bitin the cellar before I get to open it. That’s it for this month and I hope tosee you on the flight line soon.

t the last meeting Tom Spriet asked me tocollect and report data on LiPos. Thank youfor the several responses. Accompanying this

article is a spread sheet which I will update as I hearfrom more members. The raw data at this pointwould seem to say buy Hyperion LiPos, but don’tjump to a conclusion. The initial response to thiskind of survey usually comprises those with strongfeelings—positive or negative. Of those who haveresponded so far the majority appear to be high-power users, which definitely skews the data. I surewould like to hear from more of you who are whatRCM used to call “Sunday Flyers.”(aka “sport flyers’).

Brand Vendor Positive Negative CommentsExperience Experience

True R/C True R/C Puff easy, Hyperion High power; long lasting Gens Ace Hobby Partz Physically large Thunder Power T/P Expensive; some sizes puff easily Rhino Hobby King InexpensivePulse (red) Strictly R/C Puff easy; have new chemistryTurnigy Nano Hobby King Puff, but last Turnigy reg. Hobby King Puff; moderate power Venom Decent Power Edge Long life Park Zone Puff easy, Hobby Zone Puff easy, E-Flite Last well Tanic Long life

One respondent asked how long a life one shouldexpect from LiPos. The answer is that manufacturersshoot for 300 – 350 charge/discharge cycles. But thereis a BIG fudge factor: how deep do you discharge yourcells, at what rate do you charge and discharge them, how hot do they get, at what voltage do you store them, and have they suffered any physical damage?

To get the longest life, the sport flyer should follow the80% rule: never exceed 80% of any parameter for yourcells. As a simple example if you have a 10C pack, charge and discharge at no more than 8C; if your packhas a 1000 mAh capacity (C), do not use more than800mAh. (This rule may or may not apply to the newhigh-rate cells.)

There it is: the mysterious “C”! This is nothing more orless than the stated capacity in milliamps of the packand is the number used to determine nearly everythingyou do with your cells. This can be confusing sincecapacity is stated in mAh (milliamps) while otherparameters are stated in amps. The reason is simple: ifyou look at two packs and one says it’s a 1 amp pack andthe other says it’s a 1000 mAh pack which one are youmore likely to buy even though they are both the samecapacity (C). MARKETING!

You have given me several more issues to write about(storage voltage, all about puffed cells, physicalhandling of cells), but I’ll save those for anotherFlypaper as you’re probably cross-eyed and brain friedby now <VBG>

Keep sharing your experience with LiPos and feel free toask general E-power questions. Please remember, I’m aself-taught E-power sport flyer, not an EE.

President Tom Spriet called the meeting to order at 7:33pm, introduced himself and welcomed everyone.

Secretary Dale Gathman asked for any additions orcorrections to the February 14, 2013 Member Meeting Minutes.None were voiced, and the minutes are accepted as published.

Treasurer Paul Jacobs reported that he just received application formembership from Peter Janik. Welcome Peter. Paul said that thecheckbook is in good shape. The board just approved the fieldbudget for the year, and we have enough in the checkbook to coverit. Membership renewals are going good, but all members must havetheir dues paid by March 31st to remain current.

Vice PresidentAlvin Cole statedthat he now ownsa .40 size Cub, andthen polled themembers present, asking “Who allowns a Cub?”Many handswere raised. Hesaid that a couple of the members were talking about re-institutingwhat used to be ‘Cub Days’ or ‘Vintage Days’. This type of eventwould be good to re-energize the club and have some fun. A Cub daywould not mean that the members would not be able to fly anythingthat wasn’t a Cub, but the spotlight for the day would be the Cub, andwe would try to get as many Cubs at the field as possible. Other ideasfor potential events could be ‘Warbird Weekend’ and ‘Fly Your HeartOut Jet Day’. The goal would be to bring more of the ‘Fun Fly’ typeevents back to the club. Tom Spriet recommended that Cliff Fullhartand Tom Flint spearhead the ‘Cub Day’, and they graciously acceptedthe assignment. We will discuss future ‘Fun Fly’ events soon, andanyone with recommendations for an event can send them to Alvin.

Field Chairman Mark Knoppkie statedthat the field budget for this year isclose to $19,000.00. Part of theexpense will be to re-sealcoat therunway as soon as practical. DanCompton questioned whether thesealcoat trucks would be parking onthe runway, and Mark assured him thatthey wouldn’t. Dave Cotton expressedconcern that the trucks may leavegrooves in the grass area next to therunway. Mark said that the companydoing the work is Jet Asphalt andSealcoating, the same company that

sealcoated it three years ago, so they know what our requirements and concernsare. Tom Flint requested that we recover the steel bar plane stops that aremounted to the benches with new foam during ‘Field Work Day’. It wasmentioned that there may be a better, longer lasting material that we could use.Mark stated that he also wants to clean out the field storage box that day. Wewill also be sealcoating the tarmac and taxiways during our ‘Field Work Day’,either on April 13th or April 20th. Gary Stephens expressed concern about thegrass runway still not being cut short enough. Tom Spriet responded that we willwork a little harder with the mowing crew to keep the grass on the runway areashorter. Suggestions were made to roll the field. Paul Jacobs said that the clubowns a 6000 lb. roller which is out at the field, and it just needs volunteers to runit. If you are interested in rolling the field, please contact Tom Spriet, PaulJacobs or Mark Knoppkie.

Government Relations Chairman Bill Sponslerstated that one of the things we members havebeen working on, have done a really good jobwith, and need to continue to do this year, istreat people at the field as if they areimportant, especially visitors that stop by. Billalso requested that if any member has contactwith someone that has a problem or issue withsomething that we are unsure of, we not try toresolve the issue, but instead refer them toeither Bill Sponsler or Tom Spriet. A memberrequested that the phone numbers for Bill andTom be posted at the field to make it easier torefer people to them.

Membership Chairman Chuck Noyes was absent, so Doug Swanson will takecare of the membership portion of the meeting tonight.

Flypaper Editor Doug Swanson introduced himself, and received a resoundingovation. He stated that he made a few spelling errors on the March Flypaper, butthat the corrected version is available on our web site. As always, he is lookingfor content, so all are invited to send him articles and photos of projects or othertopics that may be of interest to the club members. Doug announced that he

applied to the AMA to become a ‘CD’ (Contest Director) and that his applicationwas approved. He applied so that he would be able to run the ‘ChicagolandIMAC Challenge’ this year, thus giving Mel Ziska a break from the responsibilitythat he has shouldered for many, many years. Doug thanked Mel for his serviceto the event in the past. The IMAC challenge will be held at our field August 3rdand 4th, and anyone can participate. There aredifferent categories, and the ‘basic’ class allowsbeginning aerobatic pilots to participate withoutthe requirement of flying a specific IMAC-approved airplane.

Tom Spriet mentioned that many of ourmember’s identification cards have finally beenprinted, and that Doug has the cards. Also, anymember that has not had their photo taken andreceived their club identification card yet, can seeDoug to get their official member photo taken. Our goal is to eventually have a book ofmember’s photos posted out at the field.

Doug asked whether any new members or guests were present. MikeMaciejewski, President of the Suburban R.C. Barnstormers, introduced himself. He stated that he was here to invite us to their swap meet next month at the

DuPage County Fairgrounds, and hebrought flyers for those interested.Mike told the club that their field isbeing moved by the county, and thatthe county hopes to have them movedby mid 2014. He showed a couple ofpictures of the new field location, anddiscussed some of the reasons for themove and details of their new field. They will still be able to use theirpresent field until the new field iscomplete.

John Fischer displayed his newParkZone Habu 2. He installedthe optional 10-15 size retractsand flaps. It is a little heavierthan the original Habu, andrequired about 3 ounces oflead in the tail to balance outthe nose gear retract weight. He hopes to fly it soon.John also acquired the new ParkZone VisionAire. He says that it takes off andlands in 2 feet, and due to the AS3X technology it is amazingly stable. Accordingto John it pretty much lands itself.

Mel Ziska showed ushis Piper L4Grasshopper. Thisplane is a Bill Hempelkit (actually an ARF).Mel gave us a shorthistory of Piperairplanes. He saidthe original L4s werebuilt without flaps. They were built forobservation and assuch have extrawindows in the top(so they can see whois shooting at them

according to Mel). He powered his L4 with a gas engine, and outfitted it with JRelectronics.

Dale Gathman displayed his E-Flite P-38, now discontinued, which he acquiredfrom Dom’s collection. It has a lot of great detail on it for a foamy, and

Ed Gombash showed a plane that he was selling for a friend. It has a Super Tiger61, which is brand new. He was asking $100.00 or best offer.

Walt Thyng showed his Royal C-47, which he finished in the China Burma theatrecolors. This plane is a rebuild, modified to take Robart retracts. Walt crashed it

four years ago, and at the time felt it had too much damage to repair. Theoriginal had a single piece wing, with seventeen wires which had to be

He has the jump door with a servo installed, and plans tomake up a life raft for it. The windows have holes in them, so that if the planewas carrying troops, they could shoot at enemies out of the windows if needed.Walt recommended that if anyone purchases Turnigy motors, especially the lessexpensive line that the ‘can’ should be removed and the magnets should bereinforced with JB weld to prevent them from coming off in flight.

Tom Spriet asked Walt to accumulate data relating to batteries, and share it withthe club in the future. Walt said that he would do that, and anyone that hasbattery info, including historical experiences, can submit the data to Walt [email protected].

Special Guest – Tomintroduced member DennisSmalley, who presented uswith details of his experienceflying the F-111 Aardvarkfrom 1971 – 1979. His veryinteresting presentationincluded photos from histime flying the Aardvark forthe USAF. Thank you Dennis!
