In the years immediately following World War II, stock-car racing was experiencing the greatest popularity it had ever seen. Tracks throughout the country were drawing more drivers, and bigger crowds. Nonetheless, there was a serious lack of organization. From track to track, rules were different. Some tracks were just makeshift facilities, built to produce one big show at a county fair or something similar to capitalize on the crowds flocking to the events. Other tracks were more suited to handle the cars, but not the crowds. Some could manage both, but did little to adhere to rules set by other tracks. In December 1947, Bill France Sr., of Daytona Beach, Fla., organized a meeting at the Streamline Hotel across the street from the Atlantic Ocean to discuss the problems facing stock-car racing. France had come to Florida from Washington, D.C., years earlier. He operated a local service station and also promoted races on the city's famed beach-road courses, often racing himself. He was a man of strong will -- and ambition. Thus, by the time that meeting at the Streamline Hotel was complete, the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing was born. Few knew when the meeting adjourned if the organization would be successful. In fact, there were skeptics who believed it never would work.

WestJax Outreach takes new name, now poised to reach more of Northeast Florida

JACKSONVILLE, FL, December 6, 2012—WestJax Outreach, a Jacksonville based organization providing services for 25 years, announces a new name — COMMUNITY HEALTH OUTREACH. Services have been increased to reach other areas of Northeast Florida. Community Health Outreach provides hunger assistance, primary medical care, emergency dental treatment, pregnancy testing, counseling and clothing. All services are provided free of charge to those who need them most: the uninsured, unemployed and those living below the poverty line —including American service veterans. During 2011 the organization provided more than 17,000 services to residents of Duval County and

are projecting that more than 20,000 services will be provided in 2012. As the economy continues to struggle, unemployment compensation dwindles, the needs for their services continue to rise. Community Health Outreach receives no government funding or reimbursement at this time. They rely on the generosity of individuals, churches and foundations to meet their expenses which average less than $7 per service. Beginning in January of 2013, Community Health Outreach will offer these same services to Putnam

County residents through their partnership with South Putnam Community Church in Crescent City. A food pantry and free medical clinic will be established followed by pregnancy testing services and transportation to their clinic in Jacksonville for free emergency dental treatment. Putnam County has a median annual income of $25,000 with 23 percent of the population remaining uninsured and underserved.
