Hello Michigan Senate! Wow, 3 new Senators were introduced at the MIJC State Meeting in Boyne. Welcome Bill Jewell #68847, Dr. Jennifer Tryban #68848, and Sandra Hillard #68849. Also receiving her Senatorship in April was Sue Metalski #68846. What an awesome beginning for our Senate year. Sue Foltin has set up some “How To” instructions for chapters on filling out the forms and where to send them to and how much to send. The MI Senate application is being sent to the MIJC service center or not being completed at all. Our new senators are not receiving their Senate badges at the time of the presentation. Hopefully this will not delay future presentations. Krista Tocco #67648 and Amy Fenner #67112 are doing some outstanding things with the First Timers Program. Starting with a scavenger hunt at the last State Meeting to having the first timers ask for business cards and get Mardi gras beads at upcoming competitions. They have some good ideas to make the program fun. Great job ladies. We have some busy months ahead of us, starting with the USJCI Senate National Meeting held June 14-19 th in Atlanta, Georgia along the Michigan sponsored 15 th Annual Hal Krekorian Memorial Golf Tournament held June 16 th at the National Meeting. Our Region 5 States have their own signature event coming up starting with the Illinois Senate Bubba Bash held June 26 & 27 th ; July 17 & 18 th the Ohio Senate Pig Roast; July 24-26 th Illinois Senate Summer Picnic; and July 31 st & Aug.1 st the Kentucky Bourbon Bash. For more information on these events, check out our calendar of events on our website at www.michiganjcisenate.org . Keep in mind that Aug. 14-16 th is the Woodward Dream Cruise (same weekend of the Michigan Jaycees State Meeting), myself and the majority of our Board will be attending that State Meeting. We don’t want to cut ourselves short that weekend with manpower at the Cruise. This is a major fundraiser for our organization. Please lend a hand that weekend. Contact Pat Malac #41085 at 734-420-1525 or [email protected] or Tim LaBarge #43200 at 248-682-6971 to sign up. Remember to continue to “Pay it Forward”. COB'S REPORT

As I write this article, Marilyn and I are packing our bags for a Cruise to Alaska on the Coral Princess and the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Senate. Michigan will be well represented by Greg Merritt #27688 and his wife, Kathy, Art Abbott #23795 and his wife, Paula, and Jerry Wendelken #23161 and his wife, Jocelyne #66200. There will be about 100 Senators and spouses from Canada and the U.S. on the trip. We leave on May 17 and return May 31 when Marilyn will start her chemo treatments again on June 1. Our thanks go to the many Senators across Michigan and the U.S who have sent letters and cards of encouragement and support to Marilyn. On April 17 and 18, Jack Ryan #28446 and his wife, Karen and the Coopers drove to Indianapolis to attend the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Indiana Senate. Congratulations to resident Reese Malott #63926 on a great event and turnout. Great turnout of Past Presidents, in particular Chic Lantz #6845, the Charter President, and Wade Batten #20125. It was a great celebration of a successful State Senate organization. Personally, I had a great discussion with Chic Lantz as we both reminisced about our trip to the World Congress in Mar Del Plata, Argentina in 1968 and the great times we had in exploring the countryside. As an aside, I have volunteered to Chair the October 10 Day at the Races at the new Pinnacle Race Track. Please put this date on your calendar for a fun social. I have asked President Dianna to allow me to do this event and to make part of it a Past President Reunion. Should be a great time! Russ Cooper #4638 Chairman of the Board

COMMUNICATIONS Greetings, "This the first day of the rest of your life". How many times have we heard that saying and not put too much thought into it. I'm sure lots of times, but we need to recognize as we putter along from day to day we have a choice of how we live it. I know most all Senators that I come in contact with, are doing their part in making a difference and enjoying what life has to offer. We make plans to visit our fellow senators from all over the country and we make good choices on the programs that we are accomplishing to make our communities better. This year we have projects that help the Michigan Senate come together as a group with a lot of staying power. Enough power to get things done and done GOOD. Convention at Boyne, I heard, was a great time. Lots of telling of stories. It's nice to see our Senate supporting their respective chapters when they get awards. As well as when we see a new face in the Senate room we need to make a point of welcoming them into the group. As New Member Orientation chairman we can give Art Abbott #23795 a lot of support and cooperation when he's working on our new senators and of course our senators we haven't seen in a while. Scholarships are chaired by Cindy Tomaszewski #65889 this year. She welcomes any of your input and help with her task at hand. Cindy will receive applications and essays from students that are entering college. If you'd like to help her please contact her at [email protected]. Deb Mogdis #62260 had another successful convention. Our Hospitality queen had libations available with help now from Dan Gratz to help with the amenities. Thanks for your efforts Deb and Dan. If you have any suggestions please contact Deb at [email protected]. Huge Kudos go out to Robin Hutchisson #68205 for her first newsletter. She has a good thing going on. Remember to contact her with any information that needs to go out to our Senate family. Her address is [email protected]. Thanks Robin. Our website diva is keeping us well informed about items that need to be addressed in almost a weekly fashion. She is doing a super job. Thank You Sue Foltin #63744. It was sad to hear about our friend (Rick Drobot) in our chapter that had passed away. His funeral was very nice and we had an extra senator from Kentucky that was here too. We were all glad to see John Voshel visiting Michigan. See ya John. Please look out for motorcycles and mopeds in your travels. It's good to be safe. Nice talking to ya. Respectfully submitted, Patti Reitsma #55847 Communications VP Ambition is the incentive that makes purpose great and achievement greater.

PROGRAMMING Hello Everyone, First I'd like to say thanks to Dianna for asking me to get involved in the Senate again. I'm sure a few of you were surprised to see me at the meeting as well. It's been a long time. I can't forget to say thank you to Adam for encouraging words and listening. I'm looking forward to working with Dianna and the entire board this year as "we pay it forward". I'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce the following Senators as they chair these programs - Thank you:

1st Timers - Krista Tocco #67648 Return The Favor - Tammy Grossenbacher #64930 Renaissance Festival - Mary Burden #62527 and David Dunville #65300 Woodward Cruise - Pat Malac #41085 and Tim LaBarge #43200 Golf Outing - Don McDurmon #59099 and JoEllen Hincker #62635 Post Holiday - Julie Carter #51324 and Rich Lindow #40108

I'm excited to work with not just these great Senators, but with all of our Senators new and seasoned. Blanca E. Fox #58235 Your Programming V. P. TREASURER

I think this time of the year is one of reflection as well as anticipation. We’re finishing a great year with Russ. We are now looking forward to the coming year with Dianna at the helm. I’m hoping that we can attract younger Senators to get involved and perhaps bring some of the B-list back into the fold by having some different activities. The more members we have the bigger the pool of potential workers, and not to mention, bigger and better and more fun gatherings will be. Please consider the following if you are not active, or if you are active but know of a senator that is not because there are not activities to their liking. All that is required to have the types of activities you would like is to come forth with your ideas and/or dues (if your dues have lapsed). If you don’t step up with your suggestions you can be sure that one thing you will miss out on is a great time with friends. I would like to say that I am proud to be a Michigan Senator and be associated with such a great group of friends. I know that the dues billing letters kind of naturally sift to the bottom of the stack of bills right below the bill for the newspaper. However, it still needs to be sent in. I want to thank those that responded from the email notice. Again, for those who don’t want to send in dues each year, a life membership would remedy that. I need help from everyone. If you move your place of residence or you change phone numbers/area codes or any other information. PLEASE contact me and let me know, ([email protected] or 734-284-8852). I can’t keep the database updated with outdated information. P.S. Speaking of a pool of potential workers, the Woodward Dream Cruise is coming up very soon. It’s a great fun way of getting active. Dennis Kester # 38014

CHAPLAIN Happy spring/summertime to our Michigan Senators With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day just past, I came across this poem and thought it to make honest sense and wanted to share it, not only help us remember our parents, but to also those of us that are parents. We may never hear this from our kids but we mean a lot to them as well.

My parents are the greatest, they raised me so strong, They've loved me all my life, loved me so long. They help me with my problems, and many other things, They're my shining light and the wind beneath my wings. They guide me through life, with all their leading love, They're exactly like angels from up above. My mom helps me with the educational part, My dad helps me in case a girl breaks my heart. Love can be wicked sometimes if it is not right, They show me love by not letting me out of their sight. All of these things, for me, they do, Shows all the care they have for me, too. Both of my parents play their own part, In comforting me with all of their heart. Sometimes, even if we get mad, We settle our differences no matter how bad. These two people are as kindred as could be, I stick by them, they stick by me. I want to tell you something as I depart, I love my parents with all of my heart.

Get outside and enjoy the wonderful weather, family and friends. On a sad note, our condolences go out to the Wyoming Chapter and Family of Senator Rick Drobot # 42848. Please keep his family and chapter in your thoughts and prayers. Your thoughtful cards and words can be sent to Marilou Drobot (wife), 3368 Flamingo S.W., Wyoming MI 49509. Please also remember to keep former first lady, Marilyn Cooper, in your prayers, and remember cards and notes of encouragement as she undergoes chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma with severe anemia. Her email address is: [email protected] and home address is 31517 Iroquois Dr, Warren MI 48088. Tammey Inman #65923 Michigan Senate Chaplain 2009-2010

HOSPITALITY Hospitality was in full swing at the First Quarter Convention in Boyne May 1-3, 2009. We had 18 Senators, including 4 new Senators, visit the Hospitality Suite. We also had several First Timers join us. Dan Gratz, #64238, has offered to use his muscles to help me unload and load the spirits at the different events throughout the year, so I can continue on as your Hospitality Hostess this year. Thank you, Dan! I am trying to schedule a Friday Night Movie Event at the Second Quarter Convention, so those of you that have not had the pleasure of viewing the movie "Pay It Forward", may be able to see where the inspiration came for President Raquepaw's theme this year. We may open this to the Jaycee membership as well with a small donation going to the one of our many Senate sponsored events. See you all in Dearborn. Your Hospitality Hostess~ Deb Mogdis #62260 MEMBERSHIP It was a great pleasure to see so many older Senators at the Annual Election meeting in Frankenmuth, featuring the Senate sponsored Senatorship presentation to Peter DeWitt, #68808. This recognition was long overdue. At this meeting, some questions were asked by younger senators at my table, indicating some confusion as to the references to “A” list and “B” list senators… Let us make this very clear- - - Of the 1300 to 1400 Jaycees in Michigan, who have ever received Senatorships from their respective chapters…Only those who join the Michigan JCI Senate organization are on the “A” list. And that, sadly, is only about 400 Senators. The balance comprise the “B” list. In other words, non-members of the MI JCI Senate. The purpose of this article is to remind all dues-paid Michigan Senators to reach out to other Senators from their chapters and regions, invite them to our meetings and socials, and encourage them to pay their dues. The main advantage of membership is to receive all communications, e-mail, printed and phone call-outs. In order to foster this involvement, we are looking for one Senator in each of the 8 Jaycee Regions to serve as Coordinator of Senate information for that region. The duties would not only include Membership encouragement, but serving as a local resource to chapters on all things “Senate”…i.e. how to apply for senatorships, forms, etc The when and where of events: meetings, Golf Outings, Renaissance Festival work dates, et cetera, et cetera. Any Senator interested in assisting your new board in this effort, contact myself or any Board member Art Abbott, #23795 Membership Coordinator, MI JCI Senate (248) 656-6705 or senabbott@ yahoo.com

COMPLETE PROCESS FOR SENATORSHIPS Please be sure to follow the following steps to ENSURE that each and every new Senator is registered with the MI JCI Senate so they will receive all the benefits that come with membership. Step 1: Application with JCI. Link: http://www.michiganjcisenate.org/documents.htm Form: Sponsored by Local Chapter / Individuals-http://www.michiganjcisenate.org/docs/US%20SenateApplication.pdf Each senatorship requires an application form supplied by US JCI to be filled out and signed by the chapter and state presidents. You will need to enclose a $300 check payable to Junior Chamber International for full Senate membership payment, and a $75 check payable to The U.S. Junior Chamber for Senate application processing. Allow 6-8 weeks for processing. Step 2: Application with MI JCI Senate. Link: http://www.michiganjcisenate.org/documents.htm Form: MI JCI Senate registration form Once JCI has issued a senatorship, you need to choose a state to be affiliated with such as the MI JCI Senate. Annual dues in Michigan are $25 and includes your Senator badge. (NOTE: Completing only Step 1 will get you a certificate of Senatorship, but NOT a badge.) You will need to use the above form to register when submitting your dues. If you wish, you can also pay a one-time-fee of $200 which provides the Senator with a life time membership with Michigan.

RENNAISSANCE FESTIVAL MY LORDS AND LADIES, COME ONE, COME ALL TO MICHIGAN RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL, SEPTEMBER, 12 &13. RAIN OR SHINE! I have spoken with our contact and confirmed we will have our normal weekend after Labor Day. They have also confirmed we will be doing the Wine Tasting once again. To be fair to all, we are giving first pick of taverns/booths to those who spend time helping with the wine tasting. You could also bring a friend to work your time in the wine tasting area. The Renaissance Festival is guessing that they will have 20 different wine distributing companies this year, from around the state. I am working on hotels right now, and the information will follow as soon as rates are confirmed. I am trying for the same hotel as last year. Mary Burden will once again be the contact for the volunteers to sign up for Saturday, Sunday, or both days, so she can arrange the booth workers. Dave Dunville is working with hotels, Renaissance paperwork, and our bank for the change fund. Just a reminder on some of the rules set by the State of Michigan and the Renaissance Festival staff:

1. There is no drinking of alcohol allowed before, or while working. This includes while on a break. (State Law)

2. Change Runners and Cash Runners may do pickups behind the bars, and should not be stopped or held up for any reason. Change Runners and Cash Runners are not employees but are part of a group, just like the MI JCI Senate.

3. One organization will not be returning to the Festival this year because they gave the Change Runners and Cash Runners too many problems, and were found spending more time drinking than working. A third of that group’s workers were removed from the grounds for drinking.

It's true, and it will be held Saturday, August 22 in Plymouth at the Fox Classic Course, with hospitality and rooms available Friday and Saturday at the Comfort Inn in Plymouth. Registration forms are available on line or in the Filibuster. If anyone has access to prizes for golf or for goodie bags, please let me know. Don McDurmon WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE Dear Senators, It is that time of year again, to start thinking of the Woodward Dream Cruise! So that means planning on working it. This year we have again, two events going on the same weekend. On the weekend of August 14th & 15th, the Michigan JC's state meeting is that weekend in Dearborn. No problem you say! Anyone coming in from out of town (that's up north or west side) can come in Friday morning and work the cruise. Dearborn is only 30-45 minutes away. If you don't go to the meetings you can help us out Friday and Saturday. Sales were slow last year, but they have a great design this and it will be a big hit. So the more sales we have, the more people we will need to work. So please e-mail me or call me or Tim LaBarge and we will send out maps and parking pass's to you. On Friday we start around 10:00 am. and Sat. around 9:00 am. and it runs till 9:30/10:00pm both days. So please give one of us a call!!! Tim LaBarge or Pat Malac 248-682-6971 248-330-9198

Directions: From the Bluegrass Parkway, take Exit 25 onto Hwy 150 heading west/north. At the first intersection (by Walmart and Lowes), turn right onto Hwy 245 (the By-Pass) heading around to the right/north. Coming from Louisville, take I-65 south to Exit 112 to Clermont/Bardstown (Hwy 245). The Comfort Inn is just off the Hwy 245/By-Pass (behind Taco Bell). To get to the farm, take Hwy 62 East from Hwy 245/By-Pass (turn at light by Save-A-Lot grocery store). Take Hwy 62 north and turn left onto Hwy 162 (62 curves right and 162 is to the left, look for large water tank). Go 3.8 miles on Hwy 162 and turn left onto gravel lane (look for #3912 on the mailbox). KY Senate signs are at the Hwy 62/162 split and at the driveway. If you get lost, call the cabin at 502-252-8513. Another claim to fame for Bardstown is the label of the "Bourbon Capital of the World". There are two distilleries in town, Heaven Hill and Barton Brands. Several other distilleries are within a short drive. The popular Maker's Mark distillery is nestled in the hills and valleys just outside of town in Loretto and is a pleasurable and scenic tour. The world famous Jim Beam distillery is also very near and is a must for visitors to the Bardstown area.

The "historic district", centered in the downtown area has sites such as St. Josephs Basilica which is the first catholic church west of the Allegany's and one of the first of four archdiocese in the United States; the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey history, and the Old Talbot Tavern which was a stage coach stop for travelers, famous and infamous, heading out west in the late 1700's.And, of course, the wonderful and

famous My Old Kentucky Home mansion at Federal Hill. Frequently visited by the American composer Stephen Foster, it is said to be his inspiration for the state song. You can visit the mansion and it's gardens at Federal Hill in the day, and see the musical depicting the life of Stephen Foster and his music at the J Dan Talbot amphitheater that same night.
