Good Morning Michigan JCI Senators!

The year is winding down and as so many of my Senate friends have told me, by the time you figure out the job it’s time to move on. We are just coming off a wonderful weekend in Troy, Michigan where we helped the Jaycees celebrate another great year of programming and fun. We also welcomed a new Senator from Wyandotte Mr. Steve Fappas and got to say hello to a Senator (Paula Peters) who in her 18 years as a Senator never attended a meeting.

Personally I am looking forward to my upcoming Carnival Cruise with 35 of my friends some of whom are Senators and Jaycees, it ought to be a lot of fun. Senate-wise I am looking forward to going to the great state of Indiana to visit my fellow President Mike Andrews for his meeting and elections banquet April 10-12, 2015.

If there are any Senators out there looking to seek office for the 2015 – 2016 year please contact me ASAP

so we can get you on the ballot for our upcoming elections April 25, 2015 in Westland. There is more information about this event inside this edition. Also Senators have you ever thought of a LIFETIME Membership? This is something the Senate can offer you so you don’t have to worry about those yearly dues. For $200.00 you will not only have your dues paid for life but will also receive a lifetime number from the Michigan JCI Senate. If you need to break the $200 into payments that can be arranged through our Treasurer Wendy Klinge.

Lastly, we had one last till we meet again time in Troy with our fellow Senators saluting Mike O’Connell. Jim Coulson, thank you for puttingtogether a great tribute video on Mike’s Senate life, and Mr. Douglas Hincker for offer a heartfelt toast to his friend Mike with a shot of Jack Daniels. Mike, we wish you the best on your new journey, till we meet again my friend.

Sincerely, Gary L. Bulson #6682342nd PresidentMichigan JCI Senate

GoodbyesAre not forever,GoodbyesAre not the end,It simply meansI’ll miss youUntil we meet again

A SOB from the COB

Dear MI JCI Senators,

Seems like just yesterday I was sweating taking on the role as your 41st President, asking myself “what did I just do” and now my term as your COB is coming to an end. What a ride.

Those who know me well know I never take on a responsibility half-way. Sitting back and just going along for the ride is not my style. I try to give 100% or more to my commitments. Sometimes while striving to do the “right thing” I may have stepped on a few toes. My intent has always been

to serve the membership but the perception may have been viewed in another light. For these people I am sorry for either not doing a better job of communicating my reasons or for not having better diplomacy. To Gary - I have tried very hard this year to step back and let you take your lead. I hope you got out of your year of being president everything you had hoped. It’s been a great year seeing more and more of our membership attending events, especially our newer senators. Congratulations.

To Vette - wishing you all the best in the upcoming year. It’s going to be a ride, so buckle in and hold on tight.

Take advantage of all the opportuni-ties that come your way and stay true to your vision. Put her in coach, she’s ready to play!

In parting, I will only add: That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life. -C William Brownfield

How glad are all of you that Spring is finally here??? At the end of February I wasn’t quite sure that it would actually warm up and the cold, snowy, wintery days would be behind us for another eight or nine months!!!! Bring on warmer days, longer days of sunshine and some fantastic events with the MI JCI Senate!!!

The February Senate meeting was another great success with fabulous attendance at both the meeting and in the hospitality suite. Thank you once again to our wonderful Hospitality Chairs of Ray and Edonna Russell. Early Saturday morning a group of senators worked with Scholarship Chair, Abby Smith reviewing submis-sions and awarding a few scholarships to some deserving young adults. Job well done to Abby Smith on another successful scholarship event, hopefully we will see a National winner from the Michigan submissions that were sent onto Nationals.

We had a great time at the Region V Spring Fling last month (March) in Columbus OH. Spring Fling has become one of my personal favorite Region Events (it was one of my first events that I participated in as a new Senator back in 2009). Which makes it so special to me that we (Michigan) will have the opportunity to host the 2016 Region V Spring Fling event!! Stay tuned for more news on this as the planning continues.

As mentioned at our last senate meet-

ing in February we announced that our Elections and Year End Banquet (Saturday, April 25th) were being com-bined into one great event. Hopefully all of you have already sent in your registration or registered online. It will be a spectacular event and I’m sure that we will all have a great time!!! In case you haven’t yet registered, please do so before April 15th as we need to give the hall our count for dinner.

April and May will be a busy time in the Senate. Elections, Year End Ban-quet, Conference (May 8th-10th) in Traverse City and WEB (May 15th-16th). Soon we will begin selling Tiger Suite Raffle tickets once again. The Suite that will be given away to one lucky winner is for Sunday, August 9th against the Boston Red Sox. We are also in the midst of planning a Bowling Social here on the East side of the State!!! Come out to as much as you can as we plan to reminisce over the past year, make some new memories and have some good old fashion FUN!!!

As I wrap up writing my last newsletter article for the 2014-15 year, I wanted to take a moment to say “Thank You” to so many of you for your continued support, guidance and most of all friendship. I have enjoyed serving all of you as one of your Vice Presidents this year. Thank you, President Gary, for being such a strong leader for all of us, always putting what is best for our member-ship first and foremost. I look forward

Happy Spring Everyone, There has been some highs and lows the last three months. Losing Mike O’Connell was one of my lows, but as he would say to us we must all go on and get things done. As I have always fell with the loss of a loved one they are an Angel on our shoulder shinning down on us. So Mike will be one of my Angels on my shoulder as I move on in the Senate.

I want to welcome the newest senators to the family. If you guys have any question on what goes on in the senate please feel free to ask. Thank you to Bill Beddoes for put-ting on a great post-holiday party. It was so nice to be able to come together after the holidays and cel-ebrate with everyone. Also, I want to thank Kim Roffe, First Timers chair, and Sarah Nelson, Return

the Favor Chair, for as always doing a great job with these two area. First timers really had a great turn out this last convention it seemed every time we turned around Kim had to run and get more copies made. I cannot believe we are going into the last three months of the 2014/2015 year it has been a great year so far and I can’t wait to see where it ends. Thank you, President Gary, for letting sit on your board this year. I can’t wait to see everyone in May in Traverse City at Great Wolf Lodge.

In closing, I would also like to put my hat in the ring for the 2015/2016 as Vice President again. I am enjoyed learning new things and traveling with the senate this year. With it being my 6th year in the Senate would love to keep moving and finding out more exciting things in the Senate.

Snow, Snow Go Away. As I sit here preparing to write my article which is due today, I look out the window and see the snow has begun to fall again. This is one person looking forward to the sun and warmth of Spring – Bring it on..

What a wonderful turn-out at the meeting last weekend. I was happy to see some people that I hadn’t seen in a while and to meet some of the new senators. The video tribute to Mike O’Connell (thank you, Jim Coulson for a fine job) was great.

Mike was the person that I turned to with so many questions regarding this position over the last four years and he was always had the answers. He will be missed by many.

This past weekend (2/21/15) at the membership meeting it was approved to send a check to the Rainy Day Fund for the funds that were in the account at the end of the 2013-2014 year. This check has been written and sent to Scott Chisholm for deposit.

So far this year we have dropped six members for non-payment of dues. These people can be reinstated to the Michigan JCI Senate by payment of the $20.00 annual dues OR they could become a life member and never have to worry about having their member-ship dropped.

You say HOW? I SAY - you can make a one-time payment of $200.00 or you can make quarterly payments of $50. If you choose the payment plan – when you have finished paying your quarterly payments you will be award-ed your life membership number and I will order you a new name badge. NOT HARD AT ALL.

There are two ways to make those payments – you can send a check to the Michigan JCI Senate, c/o Wendy Klinge, 1186 Paddock Place, Apt. 103, Ann Arbor, MI 48108 or you can pay through PayPal on our website, michiganjcisenate.org – and click on the dues tab. Also on the website there is a link to update your contact infor-mation. When you send this it comes to me and I update the roster and the National List. If you are not receiving the National Senate publication (Mentors) we probably do not have your current information so please take a minute and send it to us.

Here is a list of the members who have been dropped – but can be reinstated:

Gary Achenbach #27551 Alex Arends #26599 Richard Holloway #5132 Lisa Dunville #70381 Mark Garrison #71477 Tom Randazoo #39628

Maybe it was just an oversight, or maybe I don’t have current contact information, but if you know these senators, please encourage them to send in their dues for reinstatement to the Michigan JCI Senate.

Hi Everyone,

Well, here we are fresh home from the Spring Fling. It was a great time and Linda and I ran into many friends both old and new. Those of you that couldn’t make it, you were missed and most likely talked about. Hope you can make it to future events, it’s always more fun to talk about you when you’re there.

You may be wondering why I’m writing an article for this issue. Well, despite my best efforts to find somebody else to fill the position, I was elected to be your next President of Vice. Sorry, I mean National Vice President. I know the vote wasn’t unanimous, but that was expected.

I sincerely thank you for your words of encouragement, and your support. It really means a lot to me. You’ve put up with me for 20 years, and hopefully we will have many more.

I will make you this promise, I will try to make you proud to represent you. It is a great honor, and I will treat the position with respect.

But on to the most important part of this.

You Win! I Quit!

Most of you know I have been fighting new technology forever. Well, you finally wore me down (especially John Voshel). In the very near future, I will move into the 20th century (asking for the 21st is a bit much). I plan on getting a new phone that actually does something call texting. Work with me here, it may take me a while. They also tell me I need to join something called Bookface or Facebook? So you will see me there soon. Please don’t confuse me with my son, same name, but he runs in a different circle than me.

Return the FavorIn February at the Michigan Junior Chamber Year End Convention, the Michigan JCI Senate recognized a recently aged-out Senator with the Tony Karasiewicz‘Return the Favor’ Memorial Award for Third Trimester of 2014. Tanina Foster, Senator #69206 from Wyandotte, was honored for her support of the chapter and the 2014 Board of Directors.

Tanina came back her final year as an active Jaycee to serve as a local chapter board member; even after more than 10 years as an member serving as a chapter president and dedicating time on the state board. She kept the chapter focused halfway through the year and made sure they finished strong. The Wyandotte Jaycees President said “Without her we would have been lost. We really want to make sure that she knows how much we care about her and how much we appre-ciate everything she does for the Wyandotte Jaycees.”

There were several amazing nominations submitted by chapter presidents. It truly was a difficult decision. Thank you, Senators, for all your support and guidance for your local chapter members!

Jaycee CreedWe Believe...

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

- C. William Brownfield
