PRESIDENT’S PEN

Hello. The AGM is over for another year and it was cold wet and windy so to those who were brave enough to turn up - Thank You. The day started with Alexandra Handreck giving a very interesting talk on nutrition, I myself got a lot from her and the feedback was very good! At 12, we had lunch with a variety of soups and assorted sandwiches and for sweets we had a delicious apple slice (that was to die for) made by Jo from East Maddington for which we thank her very much.

After lunch the held was AGM and 3 committee members retired - Betty Smythe, Lorraine Phillips and Sue Harding.

These ladies were thanked with a certificate, flowers and a gift voucher. We thank them very much for their dedication to the Federation, they were always supportive at functions which are always busy and we wish them well in the future. We had 3 members re-nominate however, John Sardelich, June Richards and Loris Clayton. It was very very disappointing that we had no new nominations for the committee even from the floor on the day. For Sheila and myself it will be our 3 years in office will end in 2017 and it would be nice if someone else was interested in doing these jobs. If so please ring us at the office, we will be delighted to hear from you…

I then opened the floor to discussion-and to silence!! Members, any feedback is good so if you have now thought of anything please send it in to us. Thank you. At least everyone was pleased with the (mostly donated) raffle prizes thank goodness. Congratulations to the winners of the annual raffle. They were from Cannington, Westminster, Maylands and Rockingham so it was nicely shared around! RAFFLE RESULTS. Clubs sold. 1ST Ruby Wright. 02457 Cannington 2nd Sue Wheeler. 11694 Westminster 3rd Alice Adamson. 06538 Maylands. 4th Yvonne Newcombe. 06255 Rockingham I wish to again thank the Federation committee for their enormous help on the day as we were 3 members down with sickness. Special thanks must go to Sue and Tony Harding, Anne and John Hamilton, (who is looking good after his recent accident) for all their help it was really appreciated. The next function will be the country forum at Karkana club in Bunbury and we are looking forward to seeing you all there.

The committee also have some excellent news….. Annette Sym, the author of the ‘SYMPLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE’ cookbooks has kindly offered to write a regular column and share a recipe each month for our newsletter. Annette’s columns can be used to promote discussions at your meetings and her recipes are always yummy

The committee has also decided to run a whole of state club competition twice a year. We are calling it ‘The Federation Spring and Autumn competition’ with the winning club getting a price of $50 spend however they want. Further details are in this newsletter. Best wishes Aileen.

AGM PRESIDENTS REPORT Thank you all for attending. It has been so cold… I would like to announce that we have a Vice-President Jenni Lynch from Bassendean CWLG – thank you We are sorry to 3 clubs close this year- Willagee, New Kwinana and Koonawarra -this last club was operational for 43 years. It is getting so hard for clubs to attract new members with so many weight loss programmes at the local chemist and on the internet. We wish to thank the President and committee members from these clubs and wish them well. Today we have 3 ladies retiring from the Federation Committee. Betty Smythe (19820, Lorraine Phillips (2008) and Sue Harding (2003). Slimmer of the Year 2016 was well attended but not much feedback was received only a couple of clubs that were not happy with the lunch and many members who thought the raffles were poor and the cost of the tickets too much, plus members coming in so late – it was messy. Hopefully we will do better for 2017. It was suggested we have entertainment but I would like to see more entrants and presidents sharing their weight loss stories instead. After all, the day is about them. The Country Forum held at Esperance was enjoyed be all with really interesting speakers and lovely raffle prizes. Well done to the club. Nest year in January, we will have to move out of the office as the shire is retiling the roof. The newsletter will keep you up-dated so please make sure read it. Our newsletter has been great with lots of colour and has received good member’s feedback. Many thanks to Sue and Jo. The annual raffle was a big success with only 35 books returned out of 1200 and no half sold books and all returned in plenty of time. Thanks you Sheila for doing a good job in organising the raffle. We altered the prizes a little to make it a bit more inviting as you don’t get much for your dollar these days. To my committee, I thank you for all the work you do in running the Federation and hope the next 12 months will be productive for all. Aileen Addison Federation President

SUNSHINE SLIMMERS GERALDTON Hello from a very wet and wetter Geraldton. We have had so much rain here in the Midwest, and the “old timers” tell me that it hasn’t rained like this for many years. The whole of the Midwest region is GREEN – and don’t we just love it. But we also have had the cold weather, nothing like sitting in front of an open fire at night. In my home the fire has been going constantly day and night. And there is also a big pot of veggie soup going on the stove. We are so lucky to have so many vegetables and fruits to choose from. Some of our members have brought in some really interesting articles recently about sugar, tea, chocolate. The amount of sugar in sauces, pickles, etc. is just amazing. They say that drinking too much coffee, will keep you awake at night, but then you read where it is good for you. I do believe it’s all in moderation. Coffee is a stimulant, so don’t drink late at night. I had friends come down from travelling up North on this past weekend; they tell me that the wildflowers are absolutely beautiful. Mostly pinks and yellow colours, but Geraldton is a mass of yellow daises. We do not need to go to America to see Sun flowers – we have millions of them grow wild here. So ladies time to get out those walking shoes and walk along the lovely green streets of Geraldton. Our numbers have been down a little at the club, due to illness with some of our members, but now we should start to pick up again. A new apple tree competition challenge for our members will be starting soon. Time to say once again members – please do be careful when in the shower, one of our members had quite a fright, when the sliding door of her shower, got stuck and she couldn’t get out, knowing that her husband would not be home for some time, she managed to eventually get out – after about two hours and turn the heater off- but it brings home a lesson to always be careful. Until next time Florence………….Sunshine Slimmers Club….Geraldton

7 WAYS TO BOOST YOUR VEGGIE INTAKE by Annette Sym

If you saw my dinner plate you would be shocked at how much food goes on it. I am a huge fan of vegetables and when you take a closer look you will see that over half the plate is filled with vegetables. Including a wide variety of vegetables each day means your health will be the winner. The health benefits are many. Vegetables are packed with essential vitamins and minerals and are a great source of dietary fibre. Bowel cancer is the second biggest killer of Australians; embracing both fruit and vegetables may lower the risk of contracting this disease. I class vegetables as a free food as there are so little calories and fat making them a slimmer’s best friend. The ones that need to be portion controlled are potatoes, sweet potato and corn as they are high in carbohydrates and should be eaten in limited amounts. If you struggle to get your five serves in a day (a serve is ½ cup), then I want to show you some simple ways to add taste and variety and boost your veggie intake. Here are my seven tips:

• Change up your baked vegetables; try parsnip, swede, beetroot, eggplant, capsicum, carrot, mushrooms and zucchinis. Rather than cooking in fat, spray with cooking spray to roast.

• Add leftover roast vegetables to a salad; either reheated or left cold. • Instead of making meals with high fat, creamy sauces include more tomato

and vegetable based sauces. My Tuscany Sauce recipe is great on its own or as a base for a chicken, beef or tofu dish.

• Stir fries are a quick, easy way to add more vegetables to your week. • Use up wilting vegetables to make a delicious soup. • Grate vegetables into rissoles, stews and meat loaves; I also add them to

baking such as cakes and muffins. • Frozen veggies are fine; if fresh veggies are expensive opt for frozen.

Finally, if weight loss is your thing, embracing more vegetables in your diet will help you feel more satisfied and less hungry; have sliced vegetables in the fridge to grab at snack times.

ELLENBROOK COMMUNITY WEIGHT LOSS CLUB Where have all the years gone? We have just held our 9th Annual General Meeting for the club, my how time goes so quickly. Nothing has really changed. I am still the President, Brenda Bettis is the Treasurer & was our very first official Treasurer since the club started and Alit Nottle is our Secretary who has been with the club for 8 years. Sue Ball is my Vice President and has been with the club for 4 years. Both Sue and I came from Dianella WW Club. It is great to have a good team behind you and we all work in harmony. MY HISTORY: Back when I was a lot younger and had my first child, I joined the then MORLEY WEIGHT WATCHERS CLUB, who held their meetings in Wood Street, BEDFORD. I graduated in 1971that was 45 years ago. The President then was Freda Jafrey. Back then we used to weigh-in, with just our petticoat on each week. Some of our younger club members now don't know what a petticoat is. If we gained weight, we were given a pig to take home and sing the pig song. Luckily I can't remember how it went. Then that club folded up and I then went to Dianella WW who used to hold their meetings in The Strand Uniting Church in Dianella then they moved to Light Street Dianella. I held many positions at that club from Librarian, Treasurer and Recorder where I was awarded Life Membership. I also started working in the Federation office as Secretary and noticed that there were phone calls were coming in from the Ellenbrook area wanting to join a low cost Weight Watchers Club. So I decided that I would give it a go and start up the Ellenbrook Community Weight Loss Club. It is hard because I don't live in the area and it is a lot of travelling but the members and committee are fantastic people. So I have been a Weight Watcher for a lot of years. If I did not weigh in every week I know that my weight would blossom. My son who is 42 years old some-times sings to me the opening song of weight watchers, because he used to go with me to the club meetings and it is still stuck in his head. TRANSFORMERS CLUB: We have had three members lose 5kg & putting their stamp on the Transformers Club board. They are now aiming for the 10kg weight loss.

Princess for the month of June was Pauline Olsen lost 3.5kg & Runner Up was Carol Eisenhauer lost 1.8kg. Princess for month of July was Marie Westlake lost 3.1kg and Runner Up was Sandra Kelly losing 3.kg. These were great losses. Congratulations to Carol Eisenhauer who has tried so hard to get back to Goal Weight. Since the 20th January 2016 Carol has lost weight, never gaining & she has now got back to her Graduation Weight and this makes her eligible to go on our Graduates list again. We wish her every success. This is not easy to do. We are all looking forward to the sunny days ahead so bring on Spring/Summer. Until next time Club President. Shirley Sardelich

DIANELLA WEIGHT WATCHERS Dianella had a successful soup night in June with a variety of soups shared & enjoyed by all members. Many thanks go to all who kindly made the soups. I’m sure there was some recipe swaps between members on the night. Our meeting room was dressed in festive cheer & friendship recently for our Christmas in July dinner. Everyone enjoyed the evening. We have now congratulated Lou on reaching her target weight, she has also received a consistency award & we will celebrate her graduation during September. Also BIG congratulations to our Prince of the month for July who has now received his 3rd star. Keep up the good work Graham! Until next time, stay safe & goodbye from all at Dianella Branch.

BEVERLEY WEIGHT WATCHERS It seems a long time ago I wrote a report from our little group, and it possibly is. Unfortunately, we have diminished in numbers with a couple of our regular weight watchers not being well enough to attend meetings. But we battle on with 6 regular ladies most weeks. Sadly, we didn’t hold our Mother’s Day stall this year, we had a bit of a mix up and we booked the venue for a week after Mother’s Day, so an executive decision was made to just have a Raffle and no stall. In saying that we had a very successful raffle and were appreciative of all the support we received from the Beverley community. As always we seem to be on a seesaw with our weight each week, some weeks good some weeks not so. We always try and lose those few extra grams. I would like to say kilos but think we need to take little steps until we get into the swing of changing our eating habits, which at times can be very hard to maintain. But I can report that all our members try really very hard to lose those excess grams. Our AGM was held on Monday 8th August, and even with just a few ladies in attendance we were able to fill all our positions. Joan is President for another term of Office and we are very grateful she agreed to fill this role. Daphne & Jenny will share the secretarial duties each week. Daphne is our Treasurer once again so our little bit of cash is in good hands. Helen who has been the weight recorder for many, many moons has agreed to continue in this role. So we battle on, and try to encourage new members wherever we can. Our Queen for 2015-2016 is Jean, Princess is Jenny, Most Consistent Attendance is Joan, and Graduate Award goes to Helen, who has maintained her goal weight for approximately 10 years. Congratulations Helen. We held our AGM Luncheon at Beverley Country Kitchen where we partook of a beautiful roast meal with all the trimmings followed by delicious sweets of sticky date pudding & new haven slice. I know not good for our weight loss BUT……………., finishing off with a cup of coffee. I am sure all our ladies enjoyed the meal immensely.

With the new WW year, we are having a drive to encourage new members and of course the elusive loss of weight. I will do my best to keep you informed of our goals reached in the coming year. Nearly forgot Welcome to our new member Pat, we hope you enjoy our small group and you are able fulfil your desire to lose some weight. Get well wishes go to Ruth & Sylvia who have both been unwell for a few weeks now, and we all hope that you will be able to join us again in the very near future. Till next time – keep those grams falling off! Jenny Ryner

BUSSELTON WASPS Well its decision time… To do the newsletter or grab a few moments of the beautiful sunshine and get a bit of pruning done. The decision was made for me. By the time I’d swallowed the last drops of my earl grey it was raining again! Our group hasn’t really had anything much to report this time around Last week our meeting was called off because of the severe weather warning which included a threat of hail stones! Laurel, our President, read out a few vital statistics from the AGM and several other items from the last newsletter. Sylvia is making good progress after her surgery. Fortunately she has some of her family living here which has been a plus for her recovery. Everyone is still giving their best to focus on weight loss and we will continue to do so through rain or shine. Keep warm everyone while you are loosing your kilos. Kind regards Valerie ( hon sec )

CANNINGTON WEIGHT WATCHERS I have finally got a bit of time to write a little for the newsletter. We at our Cannington club have had a very busy year, we have had some good loss weeks and some bad weeks, But we still keep coming along and weighing in . We have a club of 71 members and most nights we have an average of 60 members even over the winter nights. So I am very appreciative that the members still come along on the cold wet nights. Thank-you to my members for their support. Last night we celebrated another Graduation. Congratulations to Jenny Klucznik for reaching your weight loss goal. We have currently 13 graduates that we are very proud of. They are always setting a great example for all of us. Over the winter nights we tend not to have guest speakers, just myself or David (my secretary) to talk on interesting points. Also at times we have members speak on any topic that they would like to. At the moment we are running a Football competition, with the teams being put into 8 teams. North Melbourne are on the top, 114 points then Adelaide Crows, West Coast, Hawks, among the top teams. They score 6points if they lose weight for that week and score 1 point if the stay the same, nothing for gaining. The prize money is $50.00 for the member with the biggest weight loss after 8 weeks and the winning team with the biggest loss in points will each win $10.00 We also run either the apple tree or the pear/pair tree which runs similar to the apple tree but with partners and you can save each other up to 3 times before you fall off. Competition runs till the last pear is hanging. Prize money is $ 20.00 each.

We are currently organizing our end of year Xmas breakup party, which is always a great night. Music, dancing, prizes, and a lovely dinner with all our members & partners are invited. It was lovely to see our Ruby Wright win the Federation Raffle 1st prize. Well done. Ruby is lovely lady and deserves this prize. Well just a short entry to say hi from our Cannington Club, Wishing you all well, stay safe and enjoy your weight loss journey. Jenny Chadwick, Committee & Members Cannington WWC

EAST MADDINGTON WEIGHT WATCHERS

Our members are turning up each week, which is fantastic but we seem to be struggling with our weight loss of late. We need and are trying to find new ways to inspire us. 10 of our members attended the Federation AGM and I must say Aileen and her fantastic committee once again did not disappoint putting on a great day. The hot soups and sandwiches were a welcome lunch on that cold and windy day. Also thanks to our Treasurer Jo for making the Apple Slice for sweets. We held our AGM on the 28th July and am happy to say all positions were filled, a big thank you goes to all our hard working committee members. We all went out for a Xmas in July and Lucky for us it was only small portions Lastly, one of our long standing Graduate’s Gwen turned 90 in July so we surprised her with a cake, she is one inspirational lady… Until next time Happy Shrinking Maxine

Molly Bergh has taken the position of Social secretary, Elaine Mason, has returned as club treasurer and Lauren Cooper will keep the weight recording position. We have had two new members join the club since the start of our new committee, Greg and Jenny Gower. Greg is our first gentleman member for some years and has already received his first Ribbon for the loss of 3kilos. Our guest speaker (July) was Tony Holland. Tony is a Social worker from the Esperance health campus, he spoke on mental health issues, a shared responsibility, personal makeup and social situations, Act Belong Commit and R.U. OK, starting on the right track reminding yourself to relax continually and looking at stress anxiety and fear. How you feel can contribute to over-eating and weight gain. Tony finished his talk by quoting Mark Twain:

“I have had many worries in my life, some of them actually happened.” The club would like to thank Molly for inviting Tony to speak on a subject that effect on average one in five women and one in eight men in Australia today. Remember the more you get together, the more support you have and the slimmer you will be happy weight watching. Jeanette Edwards Secretary

BELMONT WEIGHT WATCHERS

Maybe it’s the cold, wet weather but it seems that many members are struggling with losing one week and gaining the next. One who stayed on track was new member Anne C, who received a 4-week ribbon and went on to be Queen of the month! What a great start – congratulations from all of us. Also this month we celebrated Ros’s birthday and welcomed new member Sue. It can be hard to get motivated to cook, especially if you’re on your own. With this in mind we compared a variety of frozen meals. There was a great range of difference in the kilojoule, fat, carbohydrate and sodium content, but generally speaking the Lean Cuisine type meals were the healthiest. Read the labels carefully if you chose this convenient option. President Linda treated everyone to DIY facials. Though we were sceptical at first we all had a go. The ingredients consisted of: Slice of raw potato Apple cider vinegar diluted with equal amount of water plus a few drops of essential oil Full-fat yogurt (flavoured is ok, but not fruit) Cleansing wipes & cotton balls Rub the cut potato gently over the whole face and neck. Leave for a few minutes then follow with a cleansing wipe. This removes dead cells and heals new cells. Use a cotton ball to smooth the cider vinegar over the face and neck. This refreshes and tightens the skin. Follow with a cleansing wipe. Smooth the yogurt over the face and neck (yes you can eat the leftovers!). This moisturises and brightens the skin. Follow with a cleansing wipe. Your skin will look and feel smoother. Linda also brought in a healthy chocolate spread that tasted very similar to Nutella. The recipe is on the next page – try it, you’ll be surprised at how good it is. Cheers Maggie

***100 GRAMS OF FAT*** Hello, do you know me? If you don't, you should. I am 100 grams of fat. And I'M the HAPPIEST 100 grams of fat that you would ever want to meet. Want to know why? It's because no one ever wants to lose me: I'M ONLY 100grams, just 100 grams! So I just stick around and happily keep you fat. Then I add to myself, ever so slyly, so that you never seem to notice it. That is, until I've grown to 1k, 2kgs, 5kgs or even more kgs in weight. Yes, it is fun being 100 grams of FAT, left to do as I please. So, when you weigh in, keep right on saying, "Oh, I only lost 100 grams." For you see, if you do this, you’ll encourage others to keep me around because they'll think I'm not worth losing. And, I love being around you - YOUR ARMS, YOUR LEGS, YOUR CHIN, YOUR HIPS and every part of your body.
