M. had built a new hous e and was appointed kampung chief. In1927, for the ceremonial consecration of the new dwelling, mangompoidjabu, and also to celebrate the welcome appointment, he invited hiskinsmen, aff ines and friends to a great four-day feast in order to receivetheir pasu-pasu and their benedictory addresses.

426 CUSTOMARY LAW OF THE TOBA-BATAK

M. was the suhut, the giver of the feast, and, together with hisfive brothers, formed a hasuhuton = feast-giving group.

The first day was the day for the pardongan-sabutuhaoti = membersof the lineage, marga and tribal group. The hasuhuton and their wivesopened the ceremony as a group and danced to the music of thegondang. The melody played was called gondang haroan = openingmelody. Then all the male descendants of Ompu Tuan Nahoda whowere present, 44 in all, danced, with th eir wives. Each person held hissampe tua = good fortune bringing gift, in his outstretched fingerswhile he danced. Such a gift is given when a new house is consecrated. In this instance it consisted of sums of money of varying amounts. As the suhut received his gifts, he noted down the name of the donorand the amount, so that he would have a reminder of the presents hewould have to give in the future.

When the descendants of Ompu Tuan Nahoda had concluded theirdance, the following people danced in their turn, (see genealogicaltree I) :the present male descendants of:Ompu Sohalompoan,Ompu Radja Gugun,Ompu Ransang,Ompu Pulungan,Ompu Sumurung,Panahan Tunggal,Ompu Radja Djaedjae, Parumarea and Pangganagana,Rangkea Sipagagan,Ompu Tuan Nabudjal,Siradja Djurdjur, and also the representatives of the marga Huta Pea, Huta Galung, HutaBarat and Panggabean. All gave money gifts.

The second day was the day for the parhula-hulaon (na nialap). Thesemen danced with their wives to the melody called somba-somba =

reverential invocation, and during the dance they made their benedictorygestures with their fingers.

They were: a representative of the hula-hula group, marga Simandjuntak, from which Ompu Tuan Nahoda had taken his wife; arepresentative of the hula-hula group, marga Huta Barat, from whichthe suhut's forefather, 3d in genealogical tree II, had taken his wife; arepresentative of the marga Huta Barat, from which great-grandfather4b had taken his wife; a representative of the marga Manik, from which

APPENDICES 427

originated the wife of grandfather 5d; a tulang, mother's brother, margaManik; and a brother-in-law, the suhut's wife's brother, marga HutaGalung. All these dancers gave their sampe tua, consisting of wovencloths, ulos, to the suhut. Some of them also gave a sum of money, orrice, the latter being represented by a bag held in their hands.

Then the members of the suhut's brothers' hula-hula, their brothersin-law, danced. Each gave his sampe tua, which consisted of wovencloths, and a sum of money to his own brother-in-law, and a smallergift, tampe -tampe, to the suhut. The total sum received by the hasuhutonfrom their parhula-hulaon was upward of 600 guilders.

The third day was the day for the pa rboruon (parianakhonon) of thelineage of Ompu Tuan Nahoda, as well as for the friends and distantaffines of the suhut. The men of the parboruon danced first, with theirwives, to the melody calledparmeme = the rice chewer, (p. 58) .During the dance they made the gestures with their fingers requestingbenediction. Those of the wives who were barren pointed to theirstomachs and pressed them in to show their emptiness. A score of peoplefrom different marga, Sihombing, Manik, Huta Galung, Sitompul,Pollan, Simamora and others, who had either taken as wives the daughters of the suhut's forefathers or who were descended from these daughters in the male line, participated in the dancing. As their sampe tuathey gave the suhut a money gift totalling 350 guilders, and they alsogave a small sum of money, tampe-tampe, to be divided among the restof the descendants of Ompu Tuan Nahoda.

Then the friends and distant affines of the suhut, among whom weremany chiefs from the surrounding areas, danced and gave their sampetua consisting of small sums of money.

On the fourth day, all the descendants of Ompu Tuan Nahoda againjoined together in the dancing and danced to the melody called panggompuli which announced the end of the ceremonies. They were joinedby all their affines on both sides, and then all the chiefs and eldersof the territory Huta Toruan joined under the leadership of the negerichief.

The dancing concluded, they then divided the d[ambar, the portionsof the slaughtered buffaloes, to which those participating at the feastwere entitled according to their genealogical position. The divisions wereas follows: the hula-hula received a rib , somba-somba, for each grouprepresented at the feast; members of the lineage, marga and tribal groupreceived a piece of the thigh, soit, for each of the groups that had

428 CUSTOMARY LAW OF THE TOBA-BATAK

participated in the first day of the feast ; the boru received its usualpart, the rungkung = neckpiece.

The rest of those present received the sitoho-toho = remainder of themeat. The distribution, manarima, of these djambar is done by a kinsmanof the suhut who is expert in knowing which portion should be givento each person. The man who does the distribution stands on a raisedplatform, calls the name of each person at the top of his voice andturns the piece of meat around so that everyone can see clearly the partthe recipient is getting. He then throws the meat onto a mat = sosar, and from there the guest collects it.

At the conclusion, the melody called gondang hasahatan = the concluding melody, was played, and some of those present addressed thesuhut with their good wishes, marhata sigabe-gabe. When that had beendone, the negeri chief gave a Christian thanksgiving.

APPENDIX II (see pp, 27, 33. 150, 360)

THE RESTORATION OF CONCORD AND PEACE IN THEMARGA SILITONGA OF THE SIPAHUTAR TERRITORY,

EAST HUMBANG

(Translated from an article in 'Suara Batak' 12th and 19th July, 1930)

The marga Silitonga occupies the Sipahutar territory (luat) and lieslike an island in the middle of some other marga, which, like it, stemfrom Sibagot ni Pohan, i.e., Pandjaitan, Simandjuntak, Tampubolon,Napitupulu and others. One can, however, say that the marga Silitongais rather exclusively established in the Sipahutar territory because thisregion has for a long time been divided, marbagian-bagian, between thedifferent marga. There is a haradjaon = autonomous community here, and another there, and that of Sipahutar is occupied by the Silitonga. This ma rga is smaller than the surrounding marga. Still , it has neverbeen driven out, dipaoto-oto = (literally) made a fool of, of this territoryby the other marga, neither during the previous warring period, nor atthe present day.

When Christianity penetrated into Sipahutar, the population of theterritory consisted of some 90 immediate families. At present, there areabout 250 families and there are also approximately 15 families of thein-dwelling marga, boru gomgoman. The first missionary was receivedcordially by all and Sipahutar became the centre of the parish, huria,Sabungan, (which contains some chieftaincies ). [This comment is Vergouwen's.]

When the Government began to regulate the chieftaincy, a RadjaIhutan (= Djaihutan), one Ompu Sodunggaron, was immediatelyappointed to the marga Silitonga. He was succeeded on his death by hisson, the present negeri chief.

So long as Ompu Sodunggaron was alive, he led, manguluhon, themarga forcefully towards God's Word. But in 1923, the Evil Onepenetrated into the territory and stirred up widespread discord amongthe Silitonga. I t began over the question of the division of the djambar. This produced general dissension which assumed extraordinary proportions. The Silitonga divided into two camps each of which went its

430 CUSTOMARY LAW OF THE TOBA-BATAK

own way in respect of marrying off daughters, parmuli ni boru, and sons, pangolion ni anak. The two factions were completely at loggerheadsin their mutual juridical life, uhum, and in the promoting of theirgeneral interests, siluluan.

Once camp consisted of the negeri chief, certain of the kampung chiefsand some of the elders, panungganei. The other embraced the rest of thekampung chiefs and the elders. Their leader was Radja N. Among therank and file, na torop, of the Silitonga, there were those who, thoughthey were very close kinsmen of the one party, yet sided with the other. And so the Evil One pursued his vicious way.

If two men who were bound for the same destination met, they didnot greet each other, masisungkunan. Even in church the two factionssat separately. And, as far as carrying out the Government's regulationswas concerned, if anyone did something wrong in error, there was alwayssomeone ready to take advantage of it. Further strife was also stirredup by some individuals from the neighbouring territories (hombar balok).

The quarrel had reached such a pitch, that at one time the hula-hulaof the Silitonga of Sipahutar, i.e., Radja Kilian Sihombing, the negerichief of Lintong ni Huta (West Humbang) visited with a great numberof people the territory in an endeavour to settle it. That was in 1927,when about 1,000 people of our hula-hula came to visit us, marebat-ebat,But, because there was no unanimity of opinion as to how the guestsshould be received according to adat, mangalusi, mangadati, only thenegeri chief and his party performed the various ceremonies and nothingcame of the attempt to settle the quarrel. Later on, Radja Kilian cameonce again with a number of companions, bringing with them a cow ofwhich the slaughter was to serve to bring us together again. But thistime, too, people remained obdurate. The wedge had been driven too

deeply into the marga. The Controleur (= Dutch District Officer)himself was even asked to intervene in the matter, but nothing cameof it.

So affairs stood in 1929, when a younger brother of Radja N ., theleader of one of the factions, who was an official, was pensioned offand returned to the village where he was born. He speedily made itknown to the villagers that the quarrel which had arisen during hisabsence had made a deep impression on him and that he was desirousof bringing it to an end. He had only been in the village for three monthswhen he made up his mind to see the negeri chief to discuss a reconciliation, pordomuan. Previously, he had prayed to God that He wouldmake the radja's heart susceptible to his well-chosen and well-meant

APPENDICES 431

words, mandok hata na uli djala na lehet. The negeri chief lent awilling ear to what his visitor had to say and viewed the plan veryfavourably. The upshot of their discussion was that the negeri chiefinvited all the kampung chiefs and the elders who belonged to hisfaction to come to his office on a particular day. At the same time, theleader of the other faction made an appeal to his own party to attendthe gathering.

When all the elders of both parties had assembled, the proposer of themeeting addressed them as follows: "For a long time I have had thedesire that we Silitonga should again be united in peace and harmony, marlehet mardame, and that th ere should be concord in the territoryif Sipahutar which we who are the descendants of Siradja Silitonga andwho are of one family, na saripe, occupy". Thereupon all presentexpressed the wish that peace should be restored. And, since it had alsobecome apparent that the Holy Ghost had entered into them, they agreedthat they should slaughter a buffalo to confirm the peace settlement andalso to strengthen people's determination to live in harmony and goodwill in the future. All that had previously happened and all that hadbeen said previously would be regarded as being over and done with.It would be as though God Himself had expunged it all.

It was then decided that 15th October, 1929, would be the day forthe festival gathering. All were agreed that the gondang must be playedas an expression of joy at their restored unity.

The same day that they made this decision, a written request to beallowed to play he gondang was sent to the Ephorus (= Head of theBatak Church) at Pearadja, a request which was granted since theOhurch Council at Sipahutar had declared that it had no objectionbecause there was no question of a pagan ritual.

At the same time, it was decided that the place where the feastshould be held would be in the huta of the negeri chief, because he is ourforemost elder, situa-tuanta, and because his house, built in the oldBatak style, is a suitable place for the gondang to be played.

The Assistant Demang of Pangaribuan who was the Batak subdistrict officer, the missionary of the province, the Batak pastor, pandita, the mission teachers of the elementary schools and others were invitedto the feast.

On the appointed day, a small dais for the speech-makers was erectedin the front of the negeri chief's house and adorned with beautifulflowers; the village-gate and the chief's house were hung with palmleaves. The arrival of the missionary was awaited but he did not put in

432 CUSTOMARY LAW OF THE TOBA-BATAK

an appearance, neither did the Batak pandita nor the school teachers. In the meantime, the rest of the people who had arrived by then crowdedinto the broad village square.

The festivities began with the dance of the married women, inantasoripada, for which one or two women from each of the 23 villagesrepresented were selected. After this dance, the negeri chief and hisprincipal adversary mounted the dais . The former then gave the reasonfor the gathering, in umpama form:

"The bamboos are growing on the village wall. The nangka tree begins to bear fruit.Weare now gathered in this village by Our God.The very desirable concord again binds us together."

At the conclusion of this speech, all present shouted horas! = hail, threetimes. Then the leader of the other faction spoke, and he, too, enlargedupon the reason for the assembly and then he led the prayers. After that, all the women present danced under the direction of the negeri chief'swife. They formed two long rows standing opposite each other andstretching from one end of the village square to the other. Theypresented a lively spectacle. When the dancing was finished, the kampung

chief N. , and two church-elders proceeded to the dais from which thechief .made a brief speech in umpama-form and after that one of theelders made an edifying speech and another said the prayers.

Then all the women of the marga Silitonga danced under directionof the negeri chief who gave them lively encouragement and even beganto lead his dancing iboto = sisters, i.e., the female members of his margaaround, with the result that there was great merriment and much happyconfusion. People danced and laughed and could hardly find their wayout from among the crowd. When finally order was more or lessrestored, such a clamour broke out that it was barely possible to hearthe music. One or two of the older marga members spoke and then theold people danced behind each other in rows.

Following them, the members of the in-dwelling marga, boru gomgornan, and the members of our common boru, the boru hatopannami, who had come in from the other territories, danced together in a group. After this, two of them, Radja N. and Elder N. both from the margaPardede which can be regarded as the oldest in-dwelling marga, theboru na godjong, took their places on the dais. The former then spokethe following in umpama form:

"In this land, scandal-mongers have created suspicions, in this

Sipahutar territory which is of the marga Silitonga, marga Silitonga

APPENDICES 433

do nampunasa. In the past, we have qu arrelled very very much.

But from now on we are of one mind. Let us, therefore, praiseGod's goodness."

The Elder them made an edifying and very moving speech that wastelling because he was so familiar with all that had happened.

When these speakers had finished, every man of the Silitonga living inth e Sipahutar territory danced, everybody kissed everybody else andmany hopped about to express their joy. And, even though perspirationwas running down the negeri ch ief's face , no one failed to kiss him. Theground shook with the stamping of their feet. The members of thehula-hula were visibly participating in the general enjoyment which theyexpressed by giving money to the dancers.

Some little time later, the Assistant Demang gav e his good wishesand then two of the chiefs of the affinal neighbouring territories spoke:

"The kinds of rice call ed sitalitoba and purbatua. Now peace has been restored among you who belong to one marga,na marsabutuha.

May we, the boru, prosper as well as you, our hula-hula.""The waves are breaking on Silangge, the rice grains are rolling. Now that you, our affines, are in concord again, we, too, are joyful."

At the conclusion of these speeches, the Assistant Demang and the twochiefs danced, and did it quite well. It was by then evening and thepeople started homewards.

The following day, people again assembl ed to slaughter the peacebuffalo. Each family had brought rice. The meal proceeded in a veryorderly way, many speeches were made and prayers of thanksgiving weresaid expressing the gratitude of the people that they were again unitedafter so much discord.

THE VISIT OF THE HULA-HULA

(From "Palito Batak", 5th July, 1928)

Some time ago, the marga Pakpahan which lives at Pangaribuan, again made a visit, marebat-ebat, to the marga Panggabean at Silindung. That Lontung marga is the hula-hula of the Panggabean. The affinityrelationship is a very old one because the ancestor of the Pakpahan,Radja Datu Ronggur, who left Samosir and went to live at Pangaribuan, married off his daughter, Si Boru Purnama, to a Panggabean, and, sincethen similar marriages have been repeatedly concluded. Both margahave prospered, rap gabe, for which reason they have frequently visitedeach other, masiebat-ebatan. But on this occasion the visit was on agrander scale than any previous one, for literally all the descendants, pomparan, of Radja Datu Ronggur, old and young, with their wives, made the journey.

They were welcomed with great joy by the Panggabean. Very skilledmusicians played the gondang and the wind instruments. The visitorswere entertained in the small Pansur na pitu territory where they danced, and they were also entertained in the Lumban Siagian territory about 3miles further on by the marga branch living there. And, only whendarkness fell on the first day did the people sit down to eat.

Many beautiful addresses were delivered, marhata marsilehet-lehet,after the meal.

The following morning, the cow which the Pakpahan had broughtwith them and which the Panggabean were to eat, was slaughtered.Addresses were again delivered after this meal and there was more music. And what a dance there was! The ground in front of the negeri chief'sdwelling was packed tight. There were no less than 300 people dancing, all in rows; the men danced behind the men, while the Pakpahan womenfaced the Panggabean women. The dancing went on and on.

After the dancing, the Pakpahan offered their gifts which consisted ofsix over-garments, ulos, one for each of the five lineages of the Panggabean marga which are the boru of the Pakpahan and one for theboru-group which had originated from Boru Purnama.
