I have no doubt that for many years Ada wished to write about

her experiences as a homesteader but faced the dilemma of

how to accurately portray her neighbors, most of whom would

still be living, while hiding their true identities. It appears

she implemented a two-fold approach: disguising her true

location and, to a lesser degree, altering the names and personal

details of her neighbors. Hopefully, those measures were

successful in keeping her secrets in the 1930s, however, with

the help of modern researching methods, I was able to discover

many of them.

ADA'S PLACESNESTERVILLE, MONTANA

Ada wrote that her homestead was near the town of Nesterville,

Montana, but during my research I quickly discovered there

was no record of its existence. However, I did find a Nesterville,

Wyoming, which was also settled by homesteaders during

the same time period. The facts became clear when I located

a copy of a Homestead Patent, signed by President Woodrow

Wilson, which stated that Ada was the owner of a 160-acre

homestead in Yellowstone County, about six miles southeast

of Broadview, Montana.

BROADVIEW, MONTANA

Broadview is situated near Billings in south central Montana.

The Broadview Post Office was established in 1908, when

the land was first opened to homesteaders. The population

peaked at approximately 260 citizens in 1930, but is currently

190, the same as it was in 1920. The Broadview church that

both Ada and her friend Margaret attended and of which Dave

Heathlowe was an early pastor, is still in existence today.

ADA'S NEIGHBORSA WOMAN FRIEND

At the beginning of Ada’s account, she refers to a woman

named Margaret Sudduth who invited her to move to

Montana. Margaret, a single woman, was also a writer.

She was born in rural Illinois and met Ada while living in

Chicago. Margaret then moved to California for a time and

later traveled to Broadview, Montana (Nesterville), perhaps

because her brother had a homestead there. She lived in

Montana for less than ten years, since according to the U.S.

Census she was a resident of Los Angeles in 1920. Margaret

lived in southern California for the remainder of her life and

died there in 1957 at the age of ninety-eight.

HEDRICK

Ada made it difficult to identify Hedrick, her “Little Raven.”

My best guess is that he was a little boy named Lyle, born in

December 1900, who only completed the eighth grade.

When he became an adult, he moved to California and found

work as a carpenter. At the time of the 1940 census, Lyle

was married, had a twelve-year-old son, and was paying

twenty dollars a month rent for his San Francisco apartment.

Lyle died at the age of eighty-five, having been a widower

for twenty years.

A. Q.

Ada didn’t try very hard to conceal his real name. A. Q. was

Arthur Allen Quinn, born in Michigan in 1877. His land

bordered Ada’s to the west and he was a bachelor at the time.

Two years after Ada moved to St. Paul, A. Q. married a

German immigrant named Sarah and had their only child,

Ellen, before their first wedding anniversary. In later years,

A. Q. sold his homestead but stayed in the Broadview area.

After A. Q.’s death in 1936, his wife and daughter left

Montana, eventually settling in Minnesota. Sarah died at the

age of eighty-eight, and daughter Ellen, after marrying and

raising a family, died in 2015.

A. Q.’S BROTHERS

A. Q. had two well-digging brothers: James, who was two years

older than A. Q., and Willis, who was eighteen years younger.

Page 6: the FARMER’S WIFE · A. Q. sold his homestead but stayed in the Broadview area. After A. Q.’s death in 1936, his wife and daughter left Montana, eventually settling in Minnesota.

James was a single man who lived with A. Q. and his family

during the early years of their marriage. The brothers’ parents

had died before Willis was five, so it was not surprising that

he moved to be near his brothers when he became an adult.

DAVE AND “SAINT” MARY HEATHLOWE

It was a bit difficult to discover the true identities of Dave and

Mary Heathlowe. However, after having done so, I had to ask

myself if I believed Ada would have wanted me to reveal their

names. Since my answer was a reluctant “no,” I will continue

to use the names Ada gave to them.

Besides altering their names, Ada was very accurate in her

description of this family. Although they had several children,

none stayed at home for very long after they came of age.

As Ada recounted, Dave was a farmer during the week and

a preacher at a small Broadview church on Sundays. He was

born in Illinois and traveled to Nebraska where he met and

married “Saint” Mary. The family lived in Nebraska for many

years before moving to Montana around 1910. By 1930,

Dave and Mary had left their homestead to make a home in

Wyoming, where Mary died in 1939, at the age of seventy-

nine. After her death, Dave settled in California where he

passed away in 1952 at the age of ninety-four. He was the last

surviving child in his family.

Ada was less than complimentary about Dave Heathlowe.

She described him as a hard man, and I have no doubt that

she often made comparisons in her own mind between him

and her late husband who was also a preacher. In researching

his life, I gained a new and more compassionate perspective

of this man. Dave was the youngest of eleven children. His

mother was nineteen years old when she married; his father

was twenty-five. Their first child, a son, and their third child,

a daughter, died in infancy years before Dave was born.

When Dave was six years old, his twenty-one-year-old sister

died. Four years later, he lost another sister, age twenty-seven.

When Dave was twelve, his twenty-two-year-old brother

passed away, followed by another brother, age twenty-eight,

a year later. A little over a decade later, his mother and father

died within a year of each other. So by the age of twenty-

five, Dave remembered the deaths of his parents, four adult

siblings, and no doubt, had heard about the deaths of his

baby brother and sister. Perhaps he was never able to conquer

the grief and sadness that God allowed into his life.

THE OPTIMIST, LIZZIE, AND CHILDREN

Ada’s dear friends were a Christian family from southern

Illinois. The Optimist, John Henry Hays, was the same age

as Ada, while his wife Elizabeth was sixteen years younger.

Their first child, Alfred, died in infancy while they were living

in Illinois. The two children that Ada mentions in her account

were Ervin and Anna Marie. According to the 1920 census,

the family still lived on their Montana homestead, but by

1930 they had relocated back to their old home in southern

Illinois. Elizabeth died in 1936, the year before Ada passed

away, and John lived to be ninety years old, dying in 1953.

Ervin, who was a pastor, and his sister Anna Marie both

married, but neither couple had children.

DAVE AND MARY’S SON TED

Very little is known of Ted “Heathlowe.” He was born

in 1902, the youngest of Dave and Mary’s children and

remained in Montana into his late 20s. He later moved to

Oregon, where he lived until his death in 1981. His wife’s

name was Fern but nothing more is known of her.

TOM ELLIOTT THE COWBOY, JED AND JENNIE THOMPKINS

AND THEIR CHILDREN, AND ALHAMBRA THE TEACHER

Unfortunately, I did not have enough information to attempt

to discover the true identities of these people.
