See you at our first spring
meeting and special Lord
Dunmore traffic
conversation on Monday,
February 4 at 7 p.m. at
Fairfield Elementary.
Spring 2019
THE
FAIRFIELD
OAK
Dear Neighbors,
The Fairfield Civic League is entering it's 22 year this
Spring. We re-established the Civic League in 1997 to
address the issue of unsafe neighborhood traffic. It has
been a long journey together. We still have not achieved
our objectives of reducing the volume and speed of traffic
on the main cut-through streets. But we will not give up.
On February 4th representatives from Traffic Engineering
will present the results of last year's "Origins and
Destination" study. They will also present options to
reduce the levels of traffic and increase safety in Fairfield.
We encourage you to come and listen and share your
thoughts as we work together to find a solution to the
traffic on Lord Dunmore Drive.
In March, we are scheduled to have Mayor Dyer speak
with us. If you have issues you would like the Mayor to
cover, please let me know in advance. Bobby Dyer has
been a friend of our neighborhood for many years. We
plan to continue that positive working relationship.
The final meeting of the Civic League season will be in
May. At this time, we are working on a historical
presentation from one of our local historians. There is so
much history in Kempsville and we want to pass that
along to future generations.

There are also Civic League Board of Director
positions that are up for elections. If you would like
to volunteer, once again, please let us know. I have
found over the years, that I get back so much more
than I give when it comes to volunteering. It is a
great way to meet neighbors throughout Fairfield.
We have several upcoming events, like the Spring
Yard Sale and Garden Club's Plant sale. Please check
our webpage for
details, www.fairfieldcivicleague.org.
Hope to see you at a Civic League meeting. As we
have said for over 20 years "the good we do,
depends on you."
Respectfully,
Doug McLiverty
President

Fairfield Newsletter Supporters- Thank You!

THE FAIRFIELD CIVIC LEAGUE NEEDS YOU!!! Please consider joining the Fairfield Civic League for the 2018-2019 season. Dues are only $20 per household and we would like to see every resident of Fairfield be part of THEIR Civic League. Being part of the Civic League helps develop a greater sense of community among our Fairfield residents as well as provide the following:
• Provide for an organization that can voice concerns to the City with regards to issues that arise. We have all heard the saying “You can’t fight City Hall” but as a collective group, we have a better chance of being heard. There is strength in numbers and a strong Civic League can provide that.
• In the past, there have been multiple neighborhood-wide events such as the Neighborhood Yard Sale and Popsicles in the Park. The events are funded, in part, by the Civic League.
• We print and mail the Fairfield Oak Newsletter, however, this is not a cheap endeavor. The Newsletter is the best way to keep Fairfield residents informed of issues and upcoming events. It is also an excellent vehicle for local businesses and residents who are business owners to promote and advertise their services.
• Who isn’t proud to drive through the neighborhood every Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day and see American flags placed in every yard in Fairfield. The flags are funded by the Fairfield Civic League and put in place by neighborhood volunteers – most of who belong to the Civic League.
So PLEASE consider joining the Fairfield Civic League. It is as simple as filling out the application below and mailing it along with $20 to the address indicated or paying when you attend the next Civic League meeting. You can also pay using PayPal though our website at fairfieldcivicleague.org. Please play a part in making Fairfield the great neighborhood that we all moved here to enjoy. If you are not sure whether you are currently a member, please visit our website at fairfieldcivicleague.org and click on the “Membership List”. The list is updated monthly and lists membership by street address with membership expiration dates. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

As part of our continued efforts to give back in our community,
the civic league has decided to add a second food drive. Our fall
food drive collected goods for the Foodbank of Southeastern
Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Our winter food drive will
collect items for Feed Kempsville. In 2018, this program
exceeded 13,000 pounds of donated groceries, 600 pounds of
fresh produce from our garden, 11,000 pounds of bread, 1,129 Beach Bags and
$2,800 donated to three local schools for lunch money debt relief. All of that adds
up to over 23,000 meal equivalents in 2018. As you can see, there is a need
for this type of support in our community.
Please consider donating some of the items listed below during our collection from
February 5-12. You can drop items off at anytime to 641 Rosaer Lane or 621 Lord
Dunmore Drive. Together, we can make a difference in our community!

the Spring Plant Sale will be
April 13th 8 a.m to 4 p.m. & April 14th 10 a.m to 2 p.m.
The Garden club operates separate from the Civic League,

they look beautiful– THANK YOU, Garden Club
members! The Fall and Spring plant sales allow the club
to continue to improve and maintain the entrance islands.
