Searching and scoring the woods all in the name of desire. What you seek, you may not find. What you don’t expect, may come to life. Into the Woods is a play that the drama students will be performing this fall. It is a mythical tale that was originally done on Broadway.

“Into the Woods is a story based on four fairy tales. It’s an interweaving of [them] and all the characters are sent into the woods to find something and it’s a fun but somewhat edgy interpretation of these fairy tales and what they wish for comes with unforeseen consequences,” said drama teacher Graham Howard.

The story starts out with the Baker and his wife searching for a list of items.

“The story is kind of like the baker and his wife and they go around trying to find items, Red

Riding hood’s cape, Cinderella’s glass slipper, Jack’s cow, and a lock of Rapunzel’s hair, to make a potion so they can have a baby,” senior Angelyn Coleman said. Coleman plays the role of the Baker’s wife in the play.

The process of getting each part included several rounds such as auditions and callbacks.

“We first auditioned and a ton of people tried out, and then we had callbacks which were terrifying; they try you out with a combination of people to see how they mesh. The cast list took forever, it was five days and we were like dying,” Coleman said, “One of [the drama students] actually made a fake cast list and we freaked out, but it was funny.”

Into the Woods was written by James Lapine. It will be presented on November 15 - 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be $14 for adults and $8 for children.

Not so happily ever after

Kiss goodbye to all those short shorts, tank tops, and sunglasses! We’re back in school and teachers and administrators are cracking down on making sure that all students are following the dress code this year.

By the end of the previous year it’s fair to say that students were getting away with clothing that is not in the Pinellas County rules.

“Now compared to the end of last year there has been a dramatic change in the number of students getting dress code violations,” math teacher Mrs. McDaniel said. “The students are still used to being able to get away with the shorts, but this year we will not tolerate it.”

Some students feel the dress code is not too bad or hard to follow, while others feel that it is ridiculous and as mature high school students they should be able to wear what they want.

- Into the Woods, a play about four fairy tales with a dark twist all interwoven together, takes center stage in November.

No more short shorts: dress code policies-Teachers and administrators are cracking down this year to make sure students follow and abide the dress code policies

“They are being way too strict! I understand they don’t want us wearing shorts that show too much but I feel that if we wear full tank tops under our lace or mesh shirts it shouldn’t be a problem,” freshman Dejah Myers said, who was written up the second week of school for wearing shorts and a lace t-shirt with a tank top underneath.

“My mom told me I’d get in trouble for the shorts, but even my mom said that my shirt should not have been a violation,” Myers said.

This is one of the reasons that PHU wanted to have a modified dress code which consisted of only crew neck, or polo shirts with no design or prints, also only jeans or khakis would be allowed; jackets or cardigans could not be used to cover up any dress code violations. Some students and teachers here at PHU are thankful that the modified dress code did not pass.

“I would rather enforce this dress code than have the modified one,” McDaniel said. “The modified dress code would have been way too hard to follow, even as a teacher.”

“It’s better that I can still wear what I want to an extent compared to the modified dress code they wanted to pass for this year,” Myers said.

Some still wonder how long they will enforce this effort to keep students in dress code, or if they will slack off like they did last year.

“We are slacking off on warning the students about their midriff already; that is against the dress code policy,” McDaniel said, “Also teachers who do not follow the dress code policy are doing us all a disservice!”

The dress code this year is just another rule that student and teachers will have to follow. By simply following the dress code we could eliminate any problems that come along with it.

Word on the street is that the school lunches are popular with almost everyone. Almost.

Whether it’s due to allergies or personal choices, many students at PHUHS have dietary restrictions. The school lunches aren’t very appealing to people with such restrictions, so many of them opt to bring a lunch. However, some students still prefer to buy lunches.

So why don’t they bring their lunches? “I’m just too lazy to make a lunch.” Jordan Navarro said, a student who enjoys our lunches. Nicole Hazlett, a vegan, buys her lunch because “it’s more convenient than hauling a lunch box around,” but if the school offered absolutely zero vegan options, she said “I would just bring lunch, even though it’s annoying.”

“There really aren’t many choices,” said Nicole Hazlett, “It’s annoying because I can only get one thing.”

The lunches may not be very vegan-friendly, but most of the school loves them, like Jordan Navarro. “I buy lunch at school everyday,” Navarro said, “and they usually do a pretty good job at making it tasty.”

Students pay at least $2 for a meal. They are required to take at least one fruit or vegetable, however many students aren’t fans of the fruit and vegetable choices.

“I guess they have the variety [of vegetables], but they aren’t that good.” Jordan said. When asked her veggie choice, Nicole responded “I would get their salads, but they have cheese on them.”

“They should offer veggie meat,” said Nicole, who also eats veggie chicken and many assorted vegetables. “[At home] I take supplements,” She is a fan of at least one food choice in the cafeteria, “they do have soy milk, which is a good thing. I just get french fries and soy milk.”

Think of these huge celebrity icons everyone is so in love with, such as Justin Bieber, the five European boys of the band One Direction, and Lil’ Wayne. These stars influence so many people of all ages opinions across the world. To me, the correct term for the power these stars are holding over today’s youth is brainwashing.

Generally, everyone has their own opinion, right? In the case of teens and their celebrity icon, that’s wrong. Teenagers have been brainwashed in a sense to believe everything their icon does. Throughout the duration of the 2012 presidential elections, many of these celebrity icons have made their opinions about the two candidates. Since these icons have a huge hold over today’s youth, people’s opinions have changed along with their icon. Essentially, much of no one has their own opinion anymore;

Celebrity brainwashing?- Celebrities’ political views change teenagers’ opinions of their icons.

Would you choose to be bullied? I wouldn’t think so but the website Ask.FM proves otherwise.

I was doing homework a few weeks ago when I came across someone’s Ask.FM account. I couldn’t believe what I saw. Comment after comment of mean things that weren’t even questions.

The point of the website is to ask people questions anonymously and get answers. According to SocialBankers.com, 980,000 people visit this website daily. Yet many complain of hateful messages posted on their wall.

This website promotes bullying and is a big homework distraction. The rise of bullying cases, some relating to suicide, have been highlighted in the news in the past two years. Many of these instances were online, and almost anyone can tell you a personal experience of Facebook or Twitter hate that they have received.

A statistic published by the I-Safe foundation states that over half of teens are bullied online and about the same number have been online bullies.

The mean machine: Ask FM- Students around the country have found a new way to negatively affect someone’s life.

Avid “Saturday Night Live” fans such as ourselves are still mourning the loss of three co-medic stars. Some fans might be all smiles to welcome three new cast members. But we’re not.

They’ve got some big shoes to fill and we’ve got high expectations. Right as we were finally getting over losing Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, they take away Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, and Abby Elliott. Really SNL, really? Talk about a low blow.

Alright, to be fair, I guess we should tell ya a little about the newbies. They’ve tak-en three of “Chicago’s best,” but how much can that mean?

There’s bigger expectations in the Big Apple, and we’re not sure they’re up for the challenge.

Aidy Bryant, Cecily Strong, and Tim Robinson- welcome. That’s as sincere as we can mean it.

Last Saturday night: SNL

Stefanie Caros

Reilly Gies and Chloe Hubbard

Pauline Piotrowski

Ask. FM just promotes this and makes it easier for it to keep happening. Some say that it’s just for fun and what people write is funny, but to the people affected by the hate it’s not so funny.

“Yeah, it does kind of hurt to hear something negative about you when you try so hard to be a nice person. It makes you doubtful of yourself and the nice comments don’t compensate.” sophomore Alyssa Kovach said.

Many account holders feel this way. Ask.FM doesn’t require you to post all the questions you are asked so a lot of bullying goes under the radar. Teens need to be warned about the dangers of this website because once they have one they may not want to deactivate it for fear of missing what others might say about them.

Honestly, I don’t know why people make them in the first place. Since many people will still use this website, just remember to think before you post anything personal or post something mean on someone else’s profile.

Remember, one mean word can change a life. Don’t let it be you.

it’s all taken over by the media.A recent conflict over a well-

known name has been a huge deal throughout the Internet; That name is Nicki Minaj and the conflict was her making a public statement about who she supports in this particular presidential election. Minaj stated, “I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney,” which started an uproar on Twitter and Facebook. She was receiving death threats and harsh comments but with that, there were people supporting Minaj and then the people who were bashing on the people supporting her. The outbreak of ruthless attacks on Minaj via Twitter and Facebook were completely unnecessary considering she only shared her opinion.

Everyone should have their own opinion without the influence of these famous people. Have your own mind and make your own opinions based on facts, not a celebrity you’re “in love with.”

We haven’t given them much of a chance with only three shows under their belt, but even we ad-mit the show is just as funny.

The show started with a po-litical parody with Barack Obama, now played by Jay Pharoah. The three new cast members didn’t have much of a chance to show what they’re made of. Perhaps they’re learning the ropes or may-be its’ just a case of stage fright?

Some words of advice to the cast members take a few hints from some of the funniest like Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, and Kristen Wiig as Gilly. Or watch some of the memo-rable episodes like when Michael Phelps and Eli Manning were hosts.

They’ve got a few weeks to prove to us they’ve got what it takes to make the 38th season of SNL as laughable as it used to be. Or SNL has just lost at least two viewers.

October 2012Entertainment6A foodie's paradise

For the seventeenth straight year, Walt Disney World is celebrating culinary adventures, achievements, and innovations with the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival. Running from Friday September 28 until Monday November 12, this festival attracts thousands of people coming from all over the country to sample food and wine from over 30 international vendors. Each vendor prepares a few appetizer-sized dishes that can be purchased for about $4-$8.

In addition to the food samplings, on select dates there will be celebrity chef appearances, cooking seminars, mixology seminars, and new this year an event called “3D - Disney’s Dessert

Discovery.” This festival boasts more than 300 international wines, 76 kinds of international foods, 160 celebrity and Disney chefs, 100,000 desserts, and over 500 pounds of watermelon to be eaten at 3D, easily making it what some call “Food Heaven.”

Other new features of the festival this year include a Florida local food vendor and market, guided tours around the World Showcase led by Disney chefs, “The Chocolate Experience: From the Bean to the Bar”, a watermelon patch, and Terra - an exclusively vegan marketplace and vendor. The Chocolate Experience is one of the most hyped events at the festival, containing chocolate sculptures, chocolate tastings, and even

drinking chocolate, which tastes like a liquid candy bar.

As far as entertainment goes, don’t worry one bit. The Eat to the Beat concert series takes place right along with the festival. Eat to the Beat is a free concert series showcased nightly in the America Gardens Center, featuring slightly older groups such as Smash Mouth, Boyz II Men, and Hanson.

Not only is there music, but the whole entire EPCOT park is open and fully operational. Take a ride on Mission: Space while eating Canadian Cheese Soup or walk through Japan while eating kielbasa and potato pierogies from Poland. Admission to the Food and Wine festival is included with the standard EPCOT day ticket.

The iPhone. It has become an iconic name for technology and design since the release of the first edition in 2007.

Apple has changed the interior by giving it more power and speed, a better resolution, and more user-friendly interface.

Even with only minor changes, most of them not able to be seen, consumers are always very excited when Apple releases a new product.

Though many people will upgrade to the iPhone 5 this year without really knowing why, Apple has made many improvement to its new iPhone to capture the attention of new and current users.

On Sept. 12, when Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple, introduced the new iPhone 5 at a media event hosted by Apple in San Francisco, one of the major focuses of the presentation was the new design.

The iPhone 5 has a taller 4-inch screen, which is half an inch bigger than the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 is also made with glass and aluminum which enables the 20% lighter and 18% thinner design and a fifth row of apps.

Many app developers are working on updates to take advantage of the new screen size.

Another new quality that has been rumored about for months is a smaller connector. This new 8-pin ‘Lightning’ connector is reversible

and much smaller than the previous 30-pin connector used by all other mobile Apple products.

A major disadvantage of the new Lightning connector is that consumers will not be able to use the 30-pin connector that is so widely used with other accessories. To solve this dilemma, Apple is releasing a $29 adapter that can be

used with all 30-pin connectors and accessories.

On the inside, there is a new iOS6 platform with updated built-in apps including a smarter Siri, Passbook, Newsstand, Find My iPhone and a faster Safari. The email and maps applications are only two built-in apps with more features. Apple’s partership with Google has ended, which has left the iPhone 5 without the previous Maps app run by Google Maps. Now Apple has introduced their own app. It offers 3D maps and voice-activated step-by-step directions.

Apple sent Siri back to school to learn about sports, movies, how to make dinner reservations using OpenTable, launching apps, and more to make the life of the user easier.

The notification center is only one of over 200 apps and features that has been integrated with Facebook or Twitter.

The A6 processing chip allows the phone to have a twice as fast Computer Processing Unit than the A5 chip on the iPhone 4S. A longer battery life is also an advantage of the A6 chip.

Available in a slate black or white color, the iPhone 5 is available for the same price of the iPhone 4S: $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB. The iPhone 5 can be bought with a 2 year contract from Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T.

FIFA 12 was one of the highest selling EA video games in 2012 not named Madden NFL. Its sales even rivaled that of the Madden franchise.

The game is single handedly making soccer more popular in the United States. More and more people continue to dive into the FIFA world and find a fun, exciting, and extremely addicting experience.

FIFA 13 comes out in November, and it is anticipated to be the highest grossing sports game ever. Many changes have been made to the game, but the developmental system is still trying to keep its foundations.

Senior Ty Foster, a very competitive FIFA player is worried

that the game will make too many changes from the previous game FIFA 12.

“I loved FIFA 12, I honestly don’t think they should make any major changes to the game it was perfect just the way it was,” Foster said.

Rumor is the game is attempting to make the players look more realistic, which is always the goal in many gaming productions, EA is trying to bring to life the realest possible soccer experience to the players.

Senior Jesse Caron said, “For me FIFA gives me the opportunity to play with my favorite players of the world like the Ronaldo’s, or Messi’s of the world and FIFA 12 gave me the best experience possible to do that”.

As well put together as “FIFA 13" is with the licenses, online features,

and gloss, the gameplay is both beautiful and frustrating.

This fall, JV and Varsity swimmers have taken a plunge into an undefeated season. The ‘Canes have been defeating many local teams by nearly 100 points, and the PHU swimmers plan to repeat last year’s season.

The Spirit Meet is a big event where everyone comes together to focus on the team and their spirit.

“[The Spirit Meet is] a whole lot of awesomeness. This meet is eight hours of cheering and competing in relay races,” new JV Coach Ms. Sara Kolhoff said.

This is not the Hurricanes’

A hurricane is forming- With a new coach and an undefeated season, the PHU swim team taking it up by storm.

first time winning this event. The swimmers have won the Spirit Meet for three straight years.

Coach Bitting has added a new member to the swimming staff. Ms. Kolhoff or as many swimmers call her ‘Coach K’ is the new JV coach. As a former swimmer in high school, Ms. Kolhoff has years of experience.

“[I’ve] always loved the team spirit and competitiveness of the sport,” Coach K said.

Many students at Palm Harbor seem to adore Ms. Kolhoff as the new coach, including sophomore Stefi Ticsa who swims for both JV and Varsity.

Another exciting year of Palm Harbor Hurricane Football has begun! The players are heated up and ready to take on this year’s competition which, according to Head Coach LePain, is really good.

“Every game will be tough,” Lepain said, “[The team] practices every day.”

It seems that the Hurricanes have a lot on their plate this season. A practice held every day doesn’t sound that bad but under this Florida heat combined with the pads and other gear players are required to wear things can get rough.

“Whether you’re big or

small, you need determination,” sophomore Ryan Westbay, starting right tackle for the Hurricanes JV team said.

Coach LePain is nearly in full agreement with Westbay’s interpretation.

“You have to love the game and have dedication for something,” LePain said.

Compared to past years, Coach LePain said that the teams this year don’t have those two or three superstars, but the teams do have those kids that work hard.

Working hard is the key to the Hurricanes success this year so let’s all wish both teams another good year and a successful season.

Dylan Assimakopoulos

Let's get down to business

“Coach K is really involved and enthusiastic, which is exactly what we need for a coach,” Ticsa said.

As a student at PHUHS, Ms. Kolhoff won the Spirit Meet as well.

“It’s really cool that I was able to win [the Spirit Meet] as a new coach as well as in high school,” Kolhoff said.

The Swim Team, led by Coach Bitting and Coach Kolhoff, is off to a wonderful start and looks forward to their upcoming season.

Be sure to make it to one of the biggest meets on October 10th at the Y.M.C.A against rival East Lake High School.

The PHUHS girl’s JV volleyball team has started off the season in a great way, with two wins and only one loss to our biggest rival, East Lake High School. They have been battling for several years against these State Champs, and have yet to beat them for quite some time.

The JV team is full of brand new, raw talent. They have been practicing five days a week hoping to whip themselves into shape. All of the coaches have been pushing them harder and harder each season, hoping that they will one day win a match against the Eagles.

“We have lost to East Lake once, and we are going to try and prevent it from happening again!” freshman Kelly Myers said.

This rivalry has been going on for several years now, so as the girls practice, their motivation is to finally win against them.

“The team has been training very hard, and I think it will show in our next game against East lake,” assistant coach, Mr. Sung said.

Megan MyersNot only does the volleyball

team involve the players and coaches, but it also involves the parents and the help they can provide! There is much more that happens behind the scenes of a volleyball team than many may believe.

“I love helping out with the team in any way that I can! Sometimes I bring food in for the girls before games, and other times I just come to the game to support all the players,” mother Kate Myers said.

The whole school needs to come out and support the team to a victory against the Eagles! It is not only important to our players on the team, but it will also be a good way to show school spirit in general. So come out and support the JV Lady Canes not only at the East Lake game, but many more!
