Dear Barnsley Eye, I have no idea what all the fuss is about with the Stone Roses (right) reforming. (Barnsley Eye Issue 91) I saw them live a total of 3 times during the 90’s and I’m going to be honest - they were absolute rubbish - Ian Brown couldn’t hold a tune in a bucket. I can’t say the same for The Complete Stone Roses however who I saw at Lucorum not long ago. I am not kidding when I say they were better “live” than the real thing. I emplore your readers to save their money and wait for The Complete Stone Roses to come to town. They’ll save themselves a fortune. Daz, Town End

Eye on The Olympics

The places in Yorkshire the Olympic torch relay will visit this year have been announced and Barnsley is on it!

During two days, in June 2012, it will visit 19 places in the county. The torch will arrive in Lundwood on 25 June and then continue up to Cundy Cross, Town and then onto Darton and Kexbrough before moving onto Sheffield where the torch will remain that night.

Olympic hopeful Adele Lassu from Monk Bretton said she was “really excited” that the Olympic torch was passing through her home town of Barnsley. “It’s a massive community thing. Everybody gets excited about the torch relay. That’s just as exciting to me as what it would be to compete,” said the high jumper.

Thousands of torchbearers are being recruited for the flame’s 70-day journey across the UK before the opening ceremony in London. The Olympic flame will arrive in the UK from Greece on 18 May 2012.

The relay will begin at Land’s End, Cornwall, on Saturday, 19 May and end on Friday, 27 July in the Olympic Stadium. It is estimated it will be carried 8,000 miles.

London 2012: Yorkshire Olympic Torch Route Unveiled

Wenlock and Mandeville (above) are London 2012’s mascots. Designed by top design agency Iris they have already caused much discussion in the design community since they were unveiled. We asked the Eye’s Graphic Designer Gary Milburn what he thought of them as well as the controvercial original logo on the right:

“I think they are both brilliant!! Wenlock and Mandeville are hi-tech Olympic mascots, for a high-tech age. It’s inspiring to see London pushing the boundaries of what an Olympics should look like…I thought the same when I saw the original logo which everyone seemed to hate. You can see the designer’s thoughts – especially with the mascots which are used across so many mediums, and more so in today’s age…. Wenlock and Mandeville – like the controversial logo before them – will be used across television, online video, social media platforms and most vitally – the lucrative merchandise market. If we can’t match China for inspirational architecture, we can certainly match anybody for design innovation – popular or not!”

Richard Harvey, (right) a 19 year old young man with Autism, has put his creative skills to work by penning a fictional adventure story for charity.

Working with staff at the Hesley Group’s Low Laithes Village near Barnsley, Richard is raising money for three environmental charities through the sale of his book.

Other Worldly, a tale of courage, compassion and decency, is Richard’s first book. The short story is about the parallel world of Elgasel and the struggle of King Gusma against his evil son Prince Barnvalle. Richard has always wanted to help others and supports a number of charities which protect the environment and animals. The money raised from his book will go towards his three favourite organisations: Bug’s Life, World Wildlife Fund and The Woodland Trust.

He explains that: “I have chosen these charities as they all raise money to look after the world”.

To help Richard achieve his goal of selling his book for charity, local design company Peppertree kindly provided their services free of charge. Stuart Harris from Peppertree stated that: “Richard is an amazing individual who was determined to use his writing skills to raise money for charity. Peppertree is delighted that we have been able to support him on his mission to help the environment”. Young Novelist Writes For Charity

The British Chambers of Commerce’s new Economic Survey shows concerning results from the final quarter of 2011 and points to a difficult period for the economy in early 2012.

The new survey, comprising some 7,850 responses from businesses across the UK, show declines in both manufacturing and services in the last quarter. While measures for the previous three months indicate minimal growth, expectations for the coming three months have significantly weakened. The results do not indicate a recession and are still better than those seen in the worst phase of the last downturn. However, they are a cause for concern. The worsening international situation and the growing risks facing the Eurozone, present challenges for UK exporters and business confidence as a whole.

Andrew Denniff, (right) Executive Director at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “The results of the latest survey are a cause for concern and point towards a difficult start to the new year. A recession is not a foregone conclusion. However, action is needed urgently to tackle short-term issues and a lack of business confidence, damaged by the ongoing Eurozone crisis. “A slowdown across Europe is inevitable, but we need not suffer a similar fate. We simply cannot afford to compromise. The UK does have the potential to recover and make its way in the world. We have the talent, the energy, and the enterprise. We need an environment that puts business first. We must recognise that business is good and boosting growth in our businesses will reinvigorate the economy”.

“Real measures to improve the flow of credit to businesses, reforms of our complex planning system, and investment in infrastructure projects are all needed now. On infrastructure, the government must move ahead on high speed rail, airport expansion, toll roads and liberalisation of the planning system. Britain’s economy is at a critical stage - radical decisions are needed to inspire confidence and increased investment for years to come.”

Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce have boosted their team of staff with the appointment of Michael Cullen as Business Development Manager.

Michael (right) has joined the Chamber after spending five years as Business & Magazines Manager at Sheffield Newspapers. He has vast commercial experience in sales and business development having previously served as a Key Account Executive at Yorkshire Post Newspapers, Sales Manager at Abbey Inn and Business Development Executive at British Publishing.

Between the ages of 10 and 19, Michael’s footballing prowess saw him associated with his hometown club Barnsley FC. He also spent three years running a traditional real ale pub in Leeds, growing the establishment from no customers into a thriving business which is still going strong.

Michael said: “My immediate priority is to get to know exactly what businesses in Barnsley and Rotherham want, and how we can help them, while getting them to take advantage of the services we currently deliver.

“I would like to restore some community spirit to the way people do business in our region and get local businesses working together. To start get a towel or flannel run it under the hot tap, till the towel is hot (not burning hot), then apply to your face, pressing around the beard area, this will open your pours in preparation for the next step. You are now ready to apply the crew essential shave oil, just rub the oil in your hands to warm then massage into the beard area. After this your ready to apply the crew herbal shave cream, apply this with a shave brush (badge hair brushes give best results), do this in a circular motion around your beard area.

Now using your razor weather it be a mach 3 or what ever you use, you should shave initially with the grain of your beard. After you’ve shaven with the grain your ready to repeat the process, with hot towels, oil and cream but this time shaving against the grain.

To finish massage some crew post shave cooling lotion into the beard area, this will close your pours. The results will hopefully be the closest and most refreshing shave you’ve ever had.

After Christmas most people want to lose weight. Everyone wants a flat stomach, even if not everyone is out to get a six pack. The trouble is you can’t spot reduce body fat from one area, so endless ab exercises and fad diets are not the answer.

Losing body fat requires a structured exercise programme and a healthy diet. Here are a few ways in which you can help yourself lose inches, and in the process get that flat stomach.

DietMany people try to eliminate fat from their diet, but when it comes to losing body fat, sugar is often the real enemy. Cakes, sweets and biscuits cause spikes in blood sugar levels which leads to weight gain, followed by a dip which leaves us feeling tired, hungry and craving more sugary food. Although often touted as being “healthier”, foods such as bread, orange juice, many cereals and cereal bars can also have this same effect, so check the sugar content of the foods you eat. In contrast, foods such as rice, potatoes, quinoa and porridge keep blood sugar levels more even, keeping you in “fat burning mode”.

Resistance ExerciseIn an attempt to lose weight – or more accurately to lose body fat – many people combine a reduction in their daily calorie intake with long periods of cardiovascular exercise. This does work to a degree, but adding weight training will really speed things up. Although the weight training exercises themselves don’t burn all that many calories, there is a much higher after burn effect than you get with aerobic exercise. The metabolism gets a real kick for a few hours following weight training; even sixteen hours after training the metabolism may still be slightly elevated. Adding a little extra muscle also results in a higher metabolic rate, both during activity and at rest. Weight training also helps you to hang on to lean body tissue while shedding body fat during dieting.

Cardiovascular Exercise (CV)For those that enjoy cardiovascular exercise, such as running, this will also help to trim the fat. Low intensity aerobic exercise burns mostly fat, whereas high intensity aerobic exercise burns mostly carbohydrates. On face value, it would appear that it is better to do low intensity aerobic exercise for fat burning. Although not entirely wrong, the problem with this theory is that it doesn’t burn as many calories, so although most of these calories will be from fat, there aren’t many of them. High intensity aerobic exercise burns more calories overall, so although the percentage from fat is lower, it burns more calories from fat than low intensity exercise.

Regular cardiovascular exercise will help to burn calories, and if you stick at it you will notice it start to trim the fat.

Well as the condition is attributed to a seasonal variation in light the answer is to get outside for a walk during the day and preferably around lunchtime as that is when the light is stongest. For some, lack of opportunity through work commitments or lack of mobility can be a problem. It is possible to buy a special light that gives out a bright light that mimics daylight. Some people find this beneficial but you have to use this regularly every day for about an hour or so for it to have an effect.

We have already said that oxygen in the body can help so why not take up singing? Everybody should sing. Ha I hear you say “Not me. I’m tone deaf.” But even the most tone deaf will join the anthems at a football match and who doesn’t sing in the bath? If choir is not your cup of tea then go to a karaoke evening or sing along to the radio when you are alone in the house. You will be amazed what a difference a 20 minute sing can make to your mood.

As always, try to make sure that your diet includes plenty of fruit and vegetables. Salads are just not appetising at this time of year so make tasty soups and stews and balance it with some carbohydrate like pasta, potato, yorkshire pudding and so on. Try to cook with fresh ingredients so that you have control of the amount of fat, salt and sugar that goes into each meal. You may find that this helps you to control your weight.

A complementary health treatment can also be beneficial. Most treatments are designed to stimulate blood flow and deeper breathing and aid relaxation. Reflexology can also help you rebalance and re-energize, helping you to feel more centered. Why not give it a try, make it your aim to help yourself to a healthy, well-balanced new you, ready to take on the spring and summer months with renewed vigour and enthusiasm.

Need a Website? But What Else?

Websites Dont Make Money?......Well they dont if people dont visit them! There are so many choices today about building your own website, free offers, cheap hosting, free blogs, the appeal of going down the DIY route is very tempting. But be wary, unless you tick all the relevant boxes you may waste your time and effort with the end result being reasonably pretty but nowhere to be found when people try searching for your services.

What you will need to succeed!There are 3 main paths to finding your website, use them all.

Direct Traffic – where people actually type your website address into the browser, for this they will need to have heard of you, so it is influenced by how well you market yourself using off line methods.

Via Search Engines – More people will be searching for what you offer rather than your business name. If your website has not been optimised for these search terms then it’s unlikely that your website will appear on that first page. Optimisation takes time and effort to build your credibility up, but there are many ways to achieve quicker results by building a broader internet presence.

Via a Referring Link – Simply put, this is where someone clicks on a hyperlink to arrive at your site. These links act as a little sign posts to your business, you cannot have enough of these, they can be listings in directories, videos on YouTube, articles on a blog, adverts on other websites, tweets, mentions on FaceBook etc. These act like little conveyor belts delivering visitors to your website, particularly if you create the links in places where your potential customers are likely to be looking. Indeed having links from relevant and credible sources, the better search engines will list your business when people are searching for your services. This goes a long way to building your sites credibility!

“I’m an agency worker how will the new Agency Workers Regulations benefit me?”

The new regulations came into force in October and aim to provide agency workers with the same basic working conditions as permanent employees of the business who work in a similar role.

The changes mean that from day one of an assignment, an agency worker will have the same access to facilities such as staff canteens, food and drinks machines, childcare, toilet and shower facilities, transport services and car parking as a comparable permanent employee. Agency workers will also have the right to be informed about any new job vacancies throughout the assignment.

There is a 12-week qualifying period for other rights, which many agency workers will have recently accrued. Once accrued, agency workers will enjoy the same basic conditions of employment as if they had been directly employed by the business. This includes the same pay, overtime and shift allowances, bonuses, commission and holiday pay.

The Regulations do not include redundancy pay, maternity or paternity pay but they do include paid time off for antenatal care. In relation to working hours, agency workers will enjoy the same conditions as permanent employees in relation to the duration of working time, night work, rest periods, rest breaks and annual leave.

In brief, the 12-week qualifying period does not have to be continuous as breaks of less than six weeks in length will simply pause rather than break the accrual of the 12-week qualifying period. Contact Howells for more information. JW

Engaging..... In a word that’s how to describe a spoken word performance by Henry Rollins. This is not “light” entertainment; his words demand your attention and command you to think.

It’s been a long and strange trip for Rollins, the former frontman of hardcore Washington DC punks Black Flag, he cut some of the most intense records ever made. He toured the world with the Rollins Band and gave performances that were like a war zone. Somehow in the middle of all this he found a talent for spoken word which is now his main vehicle.

Rollins hits the stage at 8.00 sharp, not second earlier or later, dressed head to toe in black. With the physique of someone twenty years younger than his 50 years and his hair now grey and cropped he is the picture of Zen simplicity - no baggage, no extra weight, no useless extras. He grabs the mic, wraps the lead round his wrist and it’s straight into the word flow. Standing there stark in front of several hundred people, Rollins covers everything from his work for National Geographic - a series in which he travels the world exploring the different relationships between man and beast - to his days in punk rock (which includes a hilarious anecdote about meeting a young Metallica).

From North Korea to Iraq, Tibet to Haiti - even a trip down to the local hypermarket in LA with his assistant Heidi - who he calls “The Demon” every avenue Rollins takes you down is mesmerising.

He hides nothing and shares everything with the audience - his fears, his beliefs, his need to keep working instead of just retiring on the royalties from his music career... nothing is off limits.

He closes the show with his insight into what has become of us in post 9/11 western civilisation and how he hopes that this is the generation that could maybe change things. As he thanks the audience before he exits the stage, you realise that he has been talking non-stop for over two hours. Flowing between the comedic to the serious, the heartbreaking to the poignant we all exit the building with a lot to think about.

At the start of the show he confided he was fearful of letting the audience down by being ‘lame’ – Mr Rollins, you needn’t have worried. GM

Always a retro performer in thrall to rock’s thrall, it was probably only a matter of time before Chris Isaak recorded an album of covers at the legendary Sun studios in Memphis.

Most of the tunes chosen to be covered were recorded in the late-50s by that veritable Mount Rushmore of rockers – Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. He opens with Johnny Cash’s Ring of Fire, which he renders faithfully but not slavishly, allowing in organ to add fresh texture to the familiar mariachi horns and railroad thrumming. Similarly, Roy Orbison’s Oh, Pretty Woman stomps along with new vigour.

It’s hardly a novel idea to cover these songs, but Isaak’s versions succeed through skilful arrangement, vibrant recording and above all some remarkable vocal performances. He’s a natural match for Orbison, and has Presley down to a tee. Whether he’s crooning (It’s Now or Never), or in boogie mode (I Forgot to Remember to Forget), the resemblance is spooky.

There’s a missionary zeal about Beyond the Sun, as if Isaak has pooled all he has learnt as a singer, and all his passion for the material, to win people back to this music. Thanks to that commitment, it’s very much mission accomplished. 4/5

Meet Wenlock and Mandeville The Official Mascots for the London 2012 Olympics.They only have one pair of eyes between them and look like Sonic the Hedgehog crossed with Mikey from Monsters Inc. but you had better get used to these strange blob-like creatures because Wenlock and Mandeville, as they are known, are the mascots for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics respectively, and will be all over Britain for the next year.
