The gift offered by the 1987 Class is a housepost. The housepost will be part of theLonghouse, which we hope the College will build in the next few years. The abovedrawing by Andrew Wilbur shows the upper portion of a housepost used to supportthe main structure of a traditional Salish Longhouse. Houseposts were carved as ameasure of respect for the culture and the material the carver used for the house.Contributions towards the Longhouse may be sent to The Evergreen State CollegeFoundation.

Hon. Shirley Chisholm former Congresswoman fromNew York, was the senior Democratic woman in theU.S. House of Representatives. She was the onlywoman, and the only Black American, to sit on thepowerful House Rules Committee, and she was aleading member of the Congressional Black Caucus.

In 1972, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm madehistory by seriously campaigning for the Democraticparty nomination for President: the first Black womanto seek the nation's highest office. Although she wasnot successful, her name, her ideas, and her commit-ment, became imbedded in America's consciousness.

Mrs. Chisholm is the author of two books: Un-bought and Unbossed, her autobiography; and TheGood Fight, the story of her 1972 bid for thePresidency.

In February, 1982, Rep. Chisholm announced thatshe would not seek reelection to the Congress. Shecited her longstanding intention never to remain inpolitics throughout her productive and creative life, andshe revealed the frustration and difficulty of servingher constituents while conservatives control govern-ment in Washington. By writing, teaching, lecturingand traveling around the nation, Mrs. Chisholm hopesto create a new national state of mind that demandspeace and equality for all Americans.

Mrs. Chisholm obtained her undergraduate andgraduate degree from Columbia University, New York.In addition, she has been awarded honorary degreesfrom many colleges and universities.

The Evergreen State College Ceremonial MaceOriginally a weapon of offense used in medieval warfare by a king or a great noble, the mace has been refined into a symbolic device used on ceremonial occasiona Asan academic device, the mace goes back to 16th century England when QueenElizabeth I presented a replica of her own royal mace to the corporation of theUniversity of Oxford in 1589. She ordered that it be used in all ceremonies to repre-sent the royal presence and the authority granted to the university to issue degreesunder the royal insignia. King Charles I made a similar gift to Cambridge Universi-ty in 1625. Since that time, it has become increasingly the custom for European, andnow American, colleges and universities to use ceremonial maces during graduationexercises.

The Evergreen State College ceremonial mace was carried at the head of the com-mencement procession for the first time during the 1982 graduation. The mace isrich in symbolism. Beginning with a square core of Eastern Maple, narrow strips oflaminated maple and walnut are attached to the core in a cross design. At the opencorners, bubinga, a wood red in color and rich in grain, is inserted. The resultingthree-foot column was lathed round and represents the tree of life. Nine grooves in-laid with copper denote the nine levels of life from animal spirit to enlightenment. The copper bands suggest the bonding forces of life.

The cap of the Mace was turned from a single block of locally grown black walnut. The shape is suggestive of a crown and represents the principal integration ofknowledge and experience. To remind us that such an integration is a carefullybalanced blend of diverse aspects of human nature, there are inlaid four circles sym-bolizing the four major ways of experiencing the world: thinking, feeling, intuitingand sensing, and the four main characteristics of the human mind: wisdom, in-nocence, introspection, and illumination.

Incorporated into this crown is a unique feature: the center is hollow and has in ita sealed vial. It is intended that each year the graduation planning committee willhave written one page, to be microfilmed and placed in the vial. Each year the com-mittee will examine the document placed in the mace for the class ten years beforeand include in the ceremony some short reflection on that piece. The intention isthat the mace is part of a living event that connects us to our past, demonstratesour belief and faith in our future and maintains a connection between the two.

The Evergreen State College Mace is the gift of former Academic Vice Presidentand Provost, Byron Youtz, who donated the materials and faculty member, EarleMcNeil, who gave his time and talent to its creation.

Academic Procession and RegaliaThe colorful Academic Procession at Evergreen features a faculty column throughwhich candidates pass in symbolic review.

The history of academic dress dates far back into the early days of the oldestuniversities. A statute of 1321 required that all Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelorsof the University of Coimbra (Portugal) wear gowns.

Although the origin of academic dress is still uncertain, most authorities believeits sources are found chiefly in ecclesiastical rather than in civilian dress.' Originally the hood was a Tippet, or shoulder covering, worn by begging Friars inthe Middle Ages. It also served as a head covering. When caps came into fashion inthe fifteenth century, hoods became ornamental and were draped over the shoulderand down the back. The cap was conferred as a symbol of the Master's Degree andvaried greatly. Some were stiff, some soft, some square or round with a tuft in thecenter. The tassel today is an elaboration of the tuft. The "mortar boad" style isfrom Oxford, but round and soft caps are also worn today at some universities.

The practice of wearing academic dress in this country dates from 1754 when KingGeorge II chartered King's College (now Columbia College) and transplanted to theColonies many of the regulations of Oxford and Cambridge. In time, more sombrecolors replaced the scarlet of the English universities. During most of the nineteenthcentury, American colleges and universities had no standard style of academic dress. Many faculty wore gowns from European universities where they received theirdegrees or gowns of local origin. Only a few wore hoods, which often were assumedto be articles of ecclesiastical rather than academic dress.

It wasn't until 1895 that a commission of leading American educators adopted acode standardizing academic dress. That code is still in effect today although it wasmodified slightly in 1935 and again in 1960. The shape and size of the Americanhood marks the college degree of the wearer, and under the system established bythe code, it is possible at an academic convocation to distinguish at a glance theBachelor's, Master's, and Doctor's, and at the same time recognize the university orcollege from which the degree was obtained. Evergreen's colors are forest green andwhite.

The code provides for three types of gowns. Those worn by the Bachelors aremade of black worsted material and have long pointed sleeves with two pleats oneither side. The graduating students at Evergreen, however, have opted for a darkgreen gown. Masters may wear either black silk or woolen gowns made with longcrescent-shaped, full-length sleeves. The gown has a closed front with flutedshoulders. The Doctors' gowns are black silk and they have full flowing sleeves bar-red with black or blue velvet and faced with velvet over their entire length. OurBoard of Trustees Members wear specially designed attire.

It is the hood which is the most important and distinctive feature of the Americancode. The Master's hood is three and one-half feet long with a three-inch wide velvetband. The Doctor's hood is four feet long with a five-inch velvet band. The velvetband of the hood symbolizes the wearer's field of study while the lining of the hoodrecognizes the official colors of the institution from which the degree was granted.
