Guest Speaker Robert Fulghum

In the Fall of 1988, Robert Fulghum's first book,All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kinder-garten, rose to the number one spot on the NewYork Times Best Seller List; it remained on that listfor more than ninety weeks. When his secondcollection of essays, It Was On Fire When I LayDown On It, appeared in the bookstores, it, too,rose to the top of the NYT's list. For many weeks,the two books were number one and number two;no other author before has occupied the top twopositions on this list simultaneously. To date, Mr.Fulghum's books have been published in twentylanguages and distributed in ninety-two countries.More than four million copies of Kindergartenhave been distributed in the United States alone.

Robert Fulghum was born in 1937 and grew up inWaco, Texas. For the last twenty-eight years hehas made his home in Washington state. In histime, he has been a newspaper boy, a ditch digger,a singing cowboy, a ranch hand, a rodeo rider, andfor a short period, he was employed as an IBMsalesman. He has spent some time teaching folkmusic -he plays the guitar, bass and mando 'cello.For twenty years, Mr. Fulghum taught drawing,painting and philosophy at the Lakeside School inSeattle. He is a painter and sculptor in his ownright, and has exhibited his work in several galler-ies. His leisure time is frequently occupied withbackpacking, sailing and sea kayaking.

Mr. Fulghum is an ordained parish minister and hasbeen affiliated with the Unitarian Church for manyyears. In the early 1970s, he lived in Japan andstudied in a Zen Buddhist Monastery. He has trav-eled the world and has spent time living in Thailand,Greece and France.Public Television produced a special with RobertFulghum and friends titled, Fulghum's After Din-ner. Throughout 1990, it was shown on publicbroadcasting channels. During that same year, Mr.Fulghum was one of six finalists nominated for aGrammy Award in the category of Best SpokenWord for the audio tape of All I Really Need ToKnow I Learned in Kindergarten. Earlier in 1990,he was awarded the Washington State Governor'sAward for Literature. In February 1990, Mr.Fulghum appeared as a guest conductor with theMinneapolis Chamber Symphony. He conductedthe last movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.Mr. Fulghum and the Minneapolis Chamber Sym-phony are planning to collaborate once again. Anew work has been commissioned for narrator,chorus and orchestra; it will make its World Premierein Minneapolis in September 1991.

Mr. Fulghum has accepted a position as a VisitingFellow and Scholar in Residence with Oberlin Collegein Ohio for the 1991 Fall semester. During the restof the year, he will lecture on college and universitycampuses, and continue to accept speaking invita-tions from a variety of organizations and corpora-tions. Mr. Fulghum will address the NationalGovernor's Conference in August 1991.

Mr. Fulghum has graciously donated his honraiumtowards the 1991 Class Gift.

The Evergreen State CollegeCeremonial Mace

Originally a weapon of offense used in medieval warfare by a king ora great noble, the mace has been refined into a symbolic device usedon ceremonial occasions. As an academic device, the mace goes backto 16th century England when Queen ELizabeth I presented a replicaof her own royal mace to the corporation of the University of Oxfordin 1589. She ordered that it be used in all ceremonies to represent theroyal presence and the authority granted to the university to issuedegrees under the royal insignia. King Charles I made a similar gift toCambridge University in 1625. Since that time, it has becomeincreasingly the custom for European, and now American, collegesand universities to use ceremonial maces during graduation exercises.

The Evergreen State College ceremonial mace was carried at thehead of the commencement procession for the first time during the1982 graduation. The mace is rich in symbolism. Beginning with asquare core of Eastern Maple, narrow strips of laminated maple andwalnut are attached to the core in a cross design. At the open corners,bubinga, a wood red in color and rich in grain, is inserted. Theresulting three-foot column was lathed round and represents the treeof life. Nine grooves inlaid with copper denote the nine levels of lifefrom animal spirit to enlightenment. The copper bands suggest thebonding forces of life.

The cap of the Mace was turned from a single block of locallygrown black walnut. The shape is suggestive of a crown and repre-sents the principal integration of knowledge and experience. Toremind us that such an integration is a carefully balanced blend ofdiverse aspects of human nature, there are inlaid four circles symbol-izing the four major ways of experiencing the world: thinking, feeling,intuiting and sensing, and the four main characteristics of the humanmind: wisdom, innocence, introspection, and illumination.

Incorporated into this crown is a unique feature: the center ishollow and has in it a sealed vial. It is intended that each year thegraduation planning committee will have written one page, to bemicrofilmed and placed in the vial. Each year the committee willexamine the document placed in the mace for the class ten yearsbefore and include in the ceremony some short reflection on thatpiece. The intention is that the mace is part of a living event thatconnects us to our past, demonstrates our belief and faith in our futureand maintains a connection between the two.

The Evergreen State College Mace is the gift of former Aca-demic Vice President and Provost, Byron Youtz, who donated thematerials and faculty member, Earle McNeil, who gave his time andtalent to its creation.
